Level Crossing, Unanderra (Princes Hwy) NSW, Australia.

  • The first activation is shown at 3:20
    This is the Princes Highway level crossing at Unanderra, New South Wales. It is located on the South Coast line between Wollongong and Kiama.
    All of the signals for the road crossing have Western Cullen Hayes bases and United Group (UGL) lights. The gates are operated by Western Cullen Hayes mechanisms and there were two Western Cullen Hayes mechanical bells. The bell on the northern side rang from start up until the gates had lowered, and the bell on the southern side rang from start up until the gates rose. As of April 2017 the mechanical bells have been replaced by Western Cullen Hayes electronic bells.
    The pedestrian crossing is for a cycle path and has United Group (UGL) lights and Magnetic Autocontrol swing gates. There are 2 Western Cullen Hayes electronic bells and they are mounted inside short posts on either side of the crossing.
    There is an advance warning signal for northbound traffic due to a bend in the road. It is unusual in the fact it has railway equipment, it has two Western Cullen Hayes bases and Aldridge Electrical lights (they also make traffic lights). Usually these signals use normal traffic light posts and equipment. The signal activates in conjunction with the level crossing signals.
    Filmed on September 4, 2016.

    In the first video, the train appears at 4:00 minutes into the video. From the start of the video, to that point, our videoagrapher showed off his zoom lens by zooming in and out, at the various parts of the of the crossing. We now know that the zoom works very nicely. Plus, we know who makes the different parts of the crossing unit. Please train your eyes on the rest of this video.

    • @redhen334
      @redhen334 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      While Redhen was looking for comments complaining about the zoom, he found a comment matching exactly what he was looking for. Redhen observed the style of narration by the commenter and of course, the sarcastic nature of Walter Fink’s comment.

    Great Video! I like how at the railroad crossing the stop here on red signs are on the signal masts instead of being on a seperate pole. Here in the US with most of those signs are on a seperate pole and they end up blocking the lights looking from the sidewalk at crossings. I also like those WCH Mechanical Bells at the railroad crossing and the Automatic lock gates at the pedestrian crossing.

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, I also like the WCH mechanical bells, but same as the US they are slowly being replaced by e-bells. They started using those new pedestrian gates in the late 1990's as many of the old GRS ones were being vandalised, the new ones are just about bullet-proof!

    9:40 Nice WRX there!

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are not many pedestrian crossings around here with e-bells, the WCH ones are well suited because the volume is easy to adjust. It is rather odd that the advance warning sign had to be 131m from the crossing, there is probably some detailed and technical reason. I must admit I wasn't paying much attention to the cars driving past, but I got honked at a few times and a few strange looks but that's normal lol.

    Is there a possibility you could release edited versions of these videos that focus less on the equipment and spend more time just on the active operation of the system? Or maybe provide a time index to start from for people like me who'd prefer to jump into the action? :-)
    The video camera you use must be expensive, because the quality is spot on, and the multiple angles are an interesting touch.
    I do like the photos afterwards showing the pedestrian crossing section using the gated design and electric release (using the same button as a pedestrian crossing button, which was an interesting thing to see). Do you have any videos of the pedestrian gate being operated to exit? I'd like to see that.
    03:20 is when the noises and sparkly lights start, for those interested.

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your feedback. I find it easier (and quicker) to edit and upload one big file rather than splitting it, but in future I can certainly provide a time in the description where people can jump to see the action.
      My camera is just a mid-range HD, they are getting cheaper now that 4K is newer.
      I have thought about showing the operation of the emergency gate release, but to gain access to the emergency gate the main gates have to be closed (when a train is coming) which makes it a bit tricky. Plus I am on my own which would make filming harder.

    I passed through this level crossing recently while heading southbound out of Wollongong. One thing that I noticed in your video was that the bell tones appeared to sound different on each side of the level crossing. The tone on the side where the first train passed through sounded a lot like the E-bells do, even though both bell boxes were of the same circular shape. Also, do you know how many level crossings that there are along the Princes Highway? I know of two in Victoria at both Stratford and Bairnsdale. There is also the Royal National Park Tramway Level Crossing at Loftus in New South Wales. There used to be one between Geelong and Colac on the Warrnambool line in Victoria too.

    • @AH137productions
      @AH137productions 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Darren Miles-Morland there’s a crossing at heathmere on the prices highway in Victoria. It’s on the currently disused Portland line and the crossing had a teardrop but got gates last year . Pointless upgrade . There are some crossings on abandoned lines around mt gambier area in SA but all have had the signals removed

    • @darrenmiles-morland8038
      @darrenmiles-morland8038 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AH137productions There was also once a level crossing on the opposite side of Bairnsdale before the railway line to Orbost closed during the 1980s. There is a rail trail running through that spot now. It seems as though the Princes Highway once had a lot more active level crossings than what it does now.

      Alstom sold the Australian part of their business to United Group about 10 years ago (I think it was just the part that made signals). All of the crossing lights, brackets and junction boxes are exactly the same, just re-branded.

    • @freebrickproductions
