Level Crossing, Lilydale VIC, Australia.
The first activation is shown at 7:15
Located in eastern Melbourne, this was the Cave Hill Road/Melba Avenue level crossing at Lilydale. The crossing was removed on July 5, 2024 and replaced by a pedestrian underpass.
Both gated signals had Westinghouse Brake & Signal bases, Westinghouse HB gate mechanisms, Artcraft gate lights and General Signals type 3 electronic bells. The bell on the western signal rang only until the gates lowered.
All four gate-less signals had unmarked bases and Westinghouse incandescent lights, while the pedestrian crossing had Magnetic swing gates.

This crossing is dead
Why did they even close this crossing? There was no reason to do so! God, I hate the Victorian Labor Party’s level crossing massacre so freaking much, that I’m never gonna vote for them in my lifetime! Still, why did they remove the crossbucks on the signals located on the gated sides of the crossing? It looks so weird. Also, boy the new Lilydale station looks like a tumour compared to the previous station. At least they didn’t demolish the old station.
@@TrickyMario7654 I have no idea why they chose to remove the crossing. I’m guessing the lack of signage was due to vandalism/theft.
@@McKHAust Frankly, I don’t even know why they’re removing the crossings at Ringwood, Ringwood East, or Croydon either. They’re not even that busy! The Victorian government have gone too overboard with this program, removing crossings that weren’t even problematic at all! Even the original 50 was kind of overkill, now it’s more than double that, and some lines they’re planning on removing every crossing! The money invested in these pointless removals could have been better spent elsewhere on other projects more worth it IMO.

Man, the mountings they used for these signals look ridiculous. Kinda unfortunate the crossing got upgraded with gates, but we all know how trigger happy the Victorian Government has been with upgrades to regional crossings ever since Kerang in 2007. Nice catch with the N-class hauled trains, which are sadly no longer a thing on the Shepparton line now. Also, how come the first paragraph describes the crossing in the past tense rather than current tense? The crossing itself still exists.
It is a real pity that the old bridge over the railway tracks was demolished.
I knew a man that use to test them to see the signals OK, twice a week. Unfortunately though this crossing, lost one of our residents at this crossing about 20+ years ago :(

Hey Michael. I had a look on Google Maps. The old signals are no more. :( They've been replaced with Gateless signals all WC Hayes equipment now.
Great video and nice crossing! I wouldn't be too surprised if the Clear LEDs on the front lights is to reduce sun phantoming that can be an issue with tinted LEDs. Shame those old (though modernized) signals are gone now.
Nice vid. This replacement was quite unfortunate as I believe it was the last one with white poles on the SA part of this line. When I filmed this crossing, they replaced a chevron next to the big "crossing" sign because it was a chevron actually meant for the other side of the road, so it was incorrect.

Agreed, if they wanted to replace the signals here they should have installed gates, have to wonder if it was for some ridiculous reason like using up the budget before the end of the financial year. Considering the fatal accident near Broken Hill on New Year's Eve, upgrades like this are just wasteful and do nothing to improve safety.
@@McKHAust 100% right there, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! The equipment used on the new signals could have easily been used elsewhere where it’s needed, not replacing gateless signals which pretty much had the same equipment. Also, could you fill me in on what happened in Broken Hill? This is the first time I’m hearing of this fatality.
@@TrickyMario7654 it's the accident where a truck collided with the train which caused it to derail, sadly killing both of the train crew. The crossing has gate-less signals despite being on a major highway.
@@McKHAust I just read about it online. Damn, the accident looks really bad. I bet they’re almost certainly going to install gates there now, with good reason too, seeing as it’s on a major highway and a main line too. BTW, I’d love to see you film some crossings on the Broken Hill line in the future.
@@TrickyMario7654 yes sadly that's the case with many crossings, they don't get upgraded with gates until a fatality occurs, yet they can find the money to waste on other ridiculous things. Doubt I will be filming any crossings in that area, I simply don't have the time and it's getting very expensive to go on road trips, would rather use my time and money for other things.

Been to this crossing more times than I can count - it's reasonably local for me and offers some pretty good views of oncoming trains. The view looking towards Bathurst through the avenue of trees looks very Scottish, especially in Autumn, whilst the fact that e-bells haven't taken hold here (as they have at Perthville) is a bonus. Keen to see what you have to say about nearby Lloyds Road when you get to it seeing as that's my regular haunt (even moreso than Orton Park). It's still got mechanical bells as of July 2024.

@@TrickyMario7654 they did a lot of signalling work in the area so guess they installed a whole new setup to integrate with the new interlocking equipment.
@@McKHAust I see. I assume they replaced the signals at Perthville at the same time, right? Begs the question, why did this get m-bells, while Perthville got an e-bell?
@@TrickyMario7654 Perthville was a later replacement I believe, it used different equipment. The old relay hut for this crossing was much smaller than the new one and the colour light signal near the crossing is new, I’m presuming they needed a bigger hut to accommodate the additional equipment for that signal. My guess is that it was much easier to do a completely new installation rather than trying to tie in the old equipment with the new and presumably have more cabling to complicate matters!
