Well done Emily. Great running. My hot weather running game changer is a "cool towel" . You soak it in coldwater, slightly wring it out and wrap it around your neck/shoulders. I even freeze mine over night. It doesnt take long to thaw out enough to be bendy. It keeps you really cool. As it warms up you simply shake it out and it cools down again. Its magic. Mine is from Dock & Bay, but amazon do them in multi packs alot more cheaply.
Running in the heat is no joke. It feels ten degrees hotter than it is. I ran my first ultra marathon in this heat..33 miles…it took me ages…it was trail, 21 hills and hot hot hot. Never drank so much in my life! It was HARD so feel your pain! I am still in disbelief that I did it. Well done you. I am not a summer runner!!!
I love you instagram and youtube. I love showing that its okay to walk during a run. Like, so many people say that is not okay and that you then arent a runner. Wel.. Fck them! I love your insta, been following for a while now. I'll be training soon for my first marathon in Barcelona in March! Keep going at it girl! Your amazing!
@@Runswithemily Thank you so much! Honestly I was feeling pretty down that I struggled so much, so it's been really reassuring hearing that others found it tough too!
I did the Bristol Half Sunday - well done for doing it as your first one!I’ve ran it a few times now as an average pace runner and it was the hardest one by far, so hot!!
Well done Emily ❤ I did HH for the 2nd time this year and wasn’t certain during I’d finish. So hot and much hillier than I’d remembered. So many people passed out 😢 glad you stayed safe. My time went out the window in the first 4k 😂
You two queens totally slaaaaayed that half! 👏🏻🙌🏻 Oooh and I feel ya with the heat! When I ran Prague Half, it was 25 degrees and it makes running sooo much harder. 😭 The same situation with ambulances and people passing out, it really messes with your head seeing them, not wanting to end up like them, but feeling like you might, lol. I was so grateful that I had my silly little vest with my own water that had electrolytes in! Saved my 🍑.
Hello girl❤I ran last Sunday my half marathon and it was horribly hot😢 people with water hoses were keeping us cool on the go. Quite some people fainted also...I am so glad I made it to the end even if I was way slower than my normal running time. Good job!!!!@🎉🎉🎉
excellent work, well done you!! That heat was no joke this weekend. I did Goring half marathon (trail) on Sunday and my plan also went out the window about 1 mile in. I just did what I could by feel and got around unscathed in 3 hours 17. Not the time I was quite hoping for but i'll take it. One tip for running in the heat is to have a bandana soaked in cold water wrapped around your wrist or neck, it does help cool you down (and if you live close or have friends coming to support, if they can bring some ice cubes to put in the bandana and roll up that *really* helps!) :) x
I did the Leeds half in the same crazy heat, it's hard but you just need to soak your head. I did a sub-2 HR but enjoyed the crowd with lots of high-fives and jokingly about. You're right,if you're not enjoying it take it easy.... you're there to have some fun on the way to the finish line.
Well done! I did a hm like that where it was so hot and people were taken ill, it was a bit scary so I really slowed down. I also find that the effort is much harder in heat especially when it has got hotter suddenly. You did great!
You did a great job! Running in the heat is no joke, I can't imagine doing a 10k even in heat like that! Would love to see a video on fuelling runs longer than 10k if you're up to it, I'm thinking of signing up for my first half marathon once I've got through my 10k this week!
Great job! Just curious, have you ever used Jeff Galloways run/walk calculator to come up with a good ratio? He also mentions that the earliest walk breaks are the most important as they erase fatigue. I generally run most of my half marathons with a 60 second run, 30 second walk ratio and have run most of my half marathons between 2 hours and 20 to to hours and 40 minutes. If it gets too hot Galloway says to slow down about 30 seconds every 3 degrees above 15.5. Based on that rule of thumb, you would have gotten a PB if it wasn't for the heat.
@Runswithemily Jeff Galloway says that after 30 seconds, the walk benefit is less effective. Ironically, I think less about the walk break with the shorter intervals. I recommend experimenting with it. Do a search for podcasts with Galloway as he gives really good explanations.
Walking is not only an option. It is a very clever strategy. I'm doing Run/Walk from the very beginning of every run. Jeff recommends a 60sec/30sec ratio for a 7min/km. Have you tried this?
I just did a hot hilly half, in total I walked 35 mins and came out at 2.29.48.. I don't technically Jeff but because I sometimes do ultras ( no more than 35 miles) I have a walk the hills agenda... At 8 miles I decided that small bumps were hills 😂funny thing was, last year when I was fitter and ran much more of it I was only 9 mins faster... Nobody needs to run up a hill x
This is like the millionth British influencer I’ve been recommended running a race. Stop TH-cam! I literally don’t care about these randoms who are trying out running a race based on running like 20 miles a week

I ran my first half in Bristol on Sunday and it was H A R D! Definitely trying to time the next one for a cooler month!
Congrats on your first half!!! You KILLEDDDD it to get through it on such a hot day!

It was just TOO hot to stick to a certain pace haha. Well done for finishing!

Hehe thanks girl!!! So scary isn’t it, it’s crazy how much the temperature has an impact!

Emily, your man is so supportive x
He’s the best!

Thank you :) Well done on your trail half, that sounds tough! Ahhh that's a great tip. I had people pouring water on me all the way round haha

Running in the heat is soooo incredibly hard 😞 thank you so much!
Did a 10K in the heat yesterday and that was enough for me to agree with you - no more races between May and August!
It’s just not comfortable 😅
No races may til November if you live in Florida ! Still in the 90’s in late October here ;(
Well done Emily! Great job as always - keep smashing it 💪 I find running much harder when it’s hot 🥵
Thank you so much !!
Amazing!!! My goal is to run a half marathon after summer. I'm a slow runner and your videos really inspire me!
Great goal ☺️☺️ so glad you like the videos, thank you so much!!

Thank you so much! I talk about fuelling for longer runs in my ‘I ran my first marathon as a slow runner’ video ☺️ x
And good luck with your 10k!!
I ran this too was crazy how hot it felt for just 23 degrees, saw four different people getting treated for heat stroke unfortunately!
There was so many people ill from the heat 😞

Ahhh interesting!! I usually do 3 or 4 mins of running and 1 min walking :)

The heat is a killer for sure x
Im doing my first half in two weeks. Last year was a scorcher so I'm hoping we've had our heatwave this weekend. 😂
Haha, good luck and stay hydrated 🫶🏻🫶🏻

So true I run/walk in all my races! I prefer to do slightly longer runs (usually 3-5 mins running depending on the run) x
I felt the same for my first half marathon. Too hot and humid and not enough training. Made it under 3 hours just and was done. Walked the last 5km.
You still finished though 🫶🏻 well done!
I also did Hackney yesterday for th first time - people who say its flat are such liars 😂 it felt super hilly compared to other races I've done
I agree!!!!
I just did a hot hilly half, in total I walked 35 mins and came out at 2.29.48.. I don't technically Jeff but because I sometimes do ultras ( no more than 35 miles) I have a walk the hills agenda... Hills are for walking only in my opinion hahaha. Well done with your half, sounds like a tough one x
I did a 10k last sun. It was 26 it was so hard because of that
Well done!!! Ouch yeh, 26 is way too hot for me!
I'm doing my first half marathon in less than 2 weeks, my only goal is to not die.
Do your splits include walking?
The screenshot at the end does yeh ☺️
@@Runswithemily thanks , still great times!! I am trying to learn how to run but I'm rubbish at any sort of distance without a walk
Walking is a really good thing to do whilst running :) helps you run for longer whilst still building your fitness / endurance up x
