Beta64 - A Link to the Past / Zelda 3

  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past helped form the Zelda series into what we know and love today. The addition of breakable walls and new attacks have been kept in the series for over 20 years thanks to this game. But A Link to the Past wasn't meant to be for the SNES at first. Instead, the game was actually planned to be the third Zelda title for the NES.
    Enjoy!

    It's interesting that almost every single zelda mechanic started with Link to The Past. That's a solid pedigree.

      The game could be considered a prototype to Ocarina of Time in a way. Many of the aspects from this game were carried over to Ocarina. You could even say the jumping between present and future could be comparable between going from the Light and Dark Worlds in this game. Also Kakariko still carried over to Ocarina of Time as the largest town area in the game though Link To The Past had a happier version of the town I think. Ocarina of Time's Kakariko does appear to be happy but then you go to places in the village like the Graveyard, the Royal Family's Tomb, The Bottom of The Well/Kakariko Well, and of course the Shadow Temple itself. There is also 3 other graves. One has a heart piece, the other has the Hylian Shield, and the third one has you racing the ghost of Dampe because in the second half of the game he becomes a ghost for some reason. The abundance of horror themed enemies in the Kakariko region as a whole was probably enough to scare kids away from the game for weeks.

      Aside from the breakable walls. While they weren't obvious, there were still breakable walls in the original Legend of Zelda game on the NES.

      @@Densiozo I think Ocarina did towns better, and gave Link a far more personal quest. Though I found Link to the Past to be far more mature and cutthroat. Events like Blind the Bandit taking the body of a maiden, until made to stand in the light of day, the Flute Kid cursed to never know his homeland as he rots in the underworld as a hollow tree, the sacrifice of the maidens one by one by a sociopathic sorceror, handed the blade and shield by your only known guardian as he dies in a cold wet ditch during a storm, escorting the princess through the catacombs with her own temple guards after your blood, the execution of a priest who guarded a princess in your stead, his final breath a desperate plea for you to save her life, and being the first being to traverse a world of darkness as a being of light really carried a lot of weight with me.

      Nes Zelda : Prototype
      Nes Zelda 2 : Cool platformer, continues Nes Zelda storyline/feel
      SNES Zelda : Elaborates heavily on Zelda 1, adding many rpg and new game mechanics to the Nes Zelda overhead pokesword battler original
      Gameboy Links Awakening : Heavily uses SNES Zelda Mechanics, whole new story
      N64 Zelda1 : Takes almost exact same story from SNES Zelda and turns it into a 3d adventure game, but with whole new gameplay
      N64 ZeldaMajora : Same gameplay mechanics as N64Zelda1 but with a whole new story (using characters from N64 Zelda)
      Gamecube Windwaker : Uses N64 Zelda1 Mechanics, whole new story, +weirdDragonBoatGuy +pirates ++humour
      I think we know the rest...

    That's so cool that we got one of the most iconic Zelda moves, the spin attack, just because of development limitations. Frankly, I'm glad; the spin attack is way cooler than a diagonal slice.

      I also wonder if ti's why Link's attack improved. In the original Zelda, he stabbed it forward like a dagger, and could only hit what was directly in front of him. The SNES slash goes through the diagonal.

    • @NordicAndNerdy
      @NordicAndNerdy 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ZipplyZane I would imagine it was also the limitations of the NES that caused them to give Link a stab, animating a full slash would have taken much more.

      The Triforce Saga is might be referring to the earlier Game Boy Zelda games; "Oracle of Ages" which focuses on Nayru, and "Oracle of Seasons" which focuses on Din. Both these games came out in 2001. The Zelda III hoax came out in 2005, so it probably tried to cash in on the idea of faking a "beta" of the Oracle game series.
      There was suppose to be a third Oracle game that more focused on Farore, but was cut.

    Again great video.
    But I was watching it again and I do feel compelled to point out a few mistakes I overlooked during my initial viewing.
    2:07 Breakable walls can still be tapped by Link's sword in the released version of the game. By charging the a Spin Attack and holding it, then walking up to a wall Link is facing, he will begin to tap it with his sword, and Breakable Walls do indeed make different sounds. You made it sound as though the feature wasn't implemented. Though granted the visible cracks did make it near useless, there are a few parts were it helps out.
    10:09 Silicon Knight did not create Metal Gear. They created *a Metal Gear*, more specifically the Gamecube remake of Metal Gear Solid called The Twin Snakes.

    In my honest point of view, I say both A link to the past and Ocarina of time prove to the entire world of gaming a great success they became. At least Zelda 3 didn't suffer the same fate like Ocarina of time when the URA was taken off instead of being used to expand more the Ocarina of time adventure.
    If there was A link between worlds, it's because Nintendo knows what's the best Nintendo games should be used for not only remakes, but for also new stories to make, as long as the originality and the true magic behind these timeless titles does not vanish.

    I can't believe you missed the biggest thing. Compare the betas again, the perspectives are different. They were either using a bigger tile set or had it zoomed in. If you look close and count the tiles you will see the tile number counts are the same, and the tiles look bigger.
    I don't even think they were capable of having a zoom feature. That tileset might of been 18x18 pixels instead of the 16x16 in the final version

    • @clayzulah
      @clayzulah 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +PersistentPixels The beta images are taken from magazine scans and have likely been cropped/enlarged. It'd be highly, highly irregular for a game from this era not to divide its graphics data by sets of 8/16/32/etc. pixels.

    The skull statues were technically used. Using the free movement glitch that lets you walk outside the map in a dungeon, allowing you to get to pretty much any room in the game, there's at least one room that has the skull statues. The room itself just isn't used anywhere, but it is technically in the game still, and you can get to it with the glitch.
    Not a big difference to what you said, but it's not technically unused. They just didn't put any doors that lead to that room anywhere in the game.

I do enjoy the old school map referencing sometimes, but I think more people would be able to get into the game if it had some modernized facets to optimize it. :o

    The first time I played the game was the Japanese Super Famicom version on my Super Famicom I had bought with a voltage converter. The game was really difficult because it was hard to figure out what to do next because the text was in Japanese but I struggled through it. When it came out here in English I had finished the Japanese version many times so I knew everything to do. I remember they had a demo cart at a Captron Nintendo video game store before the game was officially released and I played the game there and the employees and gamers watching me couldn't believe how good I was at the game. They thought I was playing it for the first time and marveled at me being able to figure out where to go and what to do next so fast. They didn't know I had already completed the Japanese Super Famicom version dozens of times. I had a lot of fun impressing everyone at how good at the game I was. I did the same thing with Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger. Completed the Japanese Super Famicom version before the game was released here. There was a Japanese toy store in downtown Los Angeles and I went there and bought all the Super Famicom RPG's before they came out here.

    I just realised why people are hyping it up so much. It had a story, a huge map, two huge maps in fact, loads of items, good music and more. What I didn't get is that although plenty of other Zelda games live up to this standard it was the first to do it all, it revolutionized the series. It is the game that left Zelda II in the dust.

    Silicon Knights only made the Gamecube remake of Metal Gear Solid, not the entire series.

    I would agree that "freedom" of exploration sets it apart from other games. However, I never count sandbox-like freedom for exploration as an inherent positive thing. Whether it actually adds to the experience has to do with execution as well as preference and taste.
    So if we can all stop treating open worlds as an inherent positive, that'd be great.

    ***** Worth mentioning is that the different sound when striking a wall was used in the Fire Temple in Ocarina of Time. That wall didnt have any visible cracks afaik, but had different sound (though also given away by the map to the observant players)

    Nice job on this Beta64! (despite the fact I've known most of this stuff since I've done my research and I really love this game!)
    Btw, what do you plan on covering in the future?

    The Chris Houlihan room can be accessed without a glitch. You need to get from the Sanctuary to the secret hole entrance from the beginning of the game on the side of the castle grounds in a set amount of time.

    Silicon Knights did not create Metal Gear. Konami allowed them to develop a remake of MGS1.

    The rock in the beta screenshot was removed because it was in the way of an entrance. If Link swam up from the screen below, which showed a clear path, he'd likely get stuck in the rock on the next screen.

    In the description, breakable walls have been in the Zelda series, since the original.
    I’ll give it to ALTTP for adding elements, themes, and locations (ie: Kakariko Village, etc).
    But the 2 most groundbreaking games in the series were the original, and OoT.

    Actually, Alttp and ALBW are named Triforce of the gods 1 and 2 in JP ver, so the first fake catridge might actually be a placeholder for the unreleased Zelda 3

    Quite interesting how if the beta stood, Link would have 16 hearts instead of the 20. Idk why but that’s always stood out for me

    to be fair, the NTSC cart was likely for translation purposes and NoA may have assumed the plot was the same, so until they had a decent build of the SNES version to work on, they easily could have continued their work on the soon outdated NES development version.

    ALTTP actually got three direct sequels soon after it came out, the oracles games and linnk's awakening have the same link as the protagonist, despite having little to do with ALTTP.

    A Link Between Worlds is indeed _A_ sequel, not _the_ sequel, by the way.
    Link's Awakening was the first sequel.
    But of course, A Link Between Worlds was a sequel more than in just one way or two.

    Reason for removing objects close to the end of the frames is because Link need 2 tiles each frame-transition. So when he enters a new frame he wont get stuck in the object too far out.

    There is one little error with this beta facts for the game. But there was actually one destroyable wall in the game that was left unmarked. That was was the small square building on the lower left corner surrounded by bushes in the town in the light world.

    • @KittStargazer
      @KittStargazer 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also wanted to add this. But, I remember seeing those screenshots with more enemies on the screen. Always made me wonder if there was a more difficult mode in the game. Something to make it more of a challenge perhaps. But I guess not...
      At least not without restricting yourself on skipping items that make the game harder at least.

    6:55 - to me the character shown here very closely resembles the Wizzrobes from the dungeons; his eyes match them, his hat, even his animations are very much the same - just his feet and clothes were changed to be more robe-like and his shoes are covered by a longer robe
