This game will always be my favourite. No matter how many remakes, high-end graphics games will be out there, nothing will come close to the pure nostalgia of completing this game for the first time.
Thats cool. Hope the video invoked that nostalgia for ya. Did you like A Link Between Worlds?
I agree with you. High-end graphics doesn't make a game great. The Link to the Past worked my imagination and left me wanting more. This was my favorite Zelda game and Ocarina of Time. The Twilight Princess was pretty good too and it reminded me of the Link to the Past, only because there is a light and a dark world, and you transform into a wolf when going into this dark world the twilight world.
I love the way the game:
1. allows you to explore without giving you a linear path, and then:
2. gradually gives you more to explore via the item system.
I remember the excitement of getting deeper into the zora domain, i basically felt like i was hacking the game by going so deep into the water - it really felt like you weren't supposed to go in there. In that era you were generally punished for trying obscure paths but amazingly there's a reward right at the end. So many times i wasn't sure where to go, but by wondering around i gathered rupees. bombs and arrows which made me feel like the exploring wasn't a waste of time. Literally every character in kakiriko village was worth talking to.
I fully agree! The exploration was fun, it never felt boring or tedious like it felt with BOTW (in my opinion). My next two video retrospective projects will be Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, so stay tuned for those.
@@Nerdporeal well i liked BOTW exploration, but then i'm a bit unusual in the sense that i skipped all the games after Link to the Past until BOTW. Ocarina of time never clicked with me, in that whole era I felt like a lot of games were better in 2D than 3D (here's looking at you Sonic). So i didn't even realise the Zoras domain was the same place I got those flippers until I was well into the game. My main problem with BOTW was that most the stuff you collected during exploration turned out to be useless. There are only really a few meals worth making and if you upgrade your armour past 2 stars then the game becomes incredibly easy.
There was less incentive in the exploration. Ocarina is a must if you like a link to the Past. Exploring that game is a lot of fun and it pays off at the end.
Part of the magic of the 80's and 90's that will never be regained is NOT having the internet to look up walkthroughs. You either slug it out and find a way to overcome or you didn't there was no "try" back then, and definitely no Google.
That is exactly why i could not beat the first two Zeldas before this...and i was really young. It was more rewarding that way.
@@Nerdporeal Do you remember a 2nd mad batter that gives you a 1/4 magic meter instead of the 1/2 magic meter? I remember it clear as day but when I look it up now everyone says it doesn't exist. I've played this game back in the day no less than 15 times and now I can not remember where the 2nd one is located on the map. I was thinking it was Mt Doom in the dark world but I can't seem to find it. I went so far as to buy the 1st released edition of the SNES cartridge just to be sure. Everyone is saying it is the Mandela Effect but I swear I remember a 2nd mad batter and I even remember what he says when you find him.
@@duhzeez7462 I never encountered a second one. You are not the only apparently, kinda like that rupee room that appears out of nowhere i think.
I really want to play a link to the past but it looks way harder and I played ocarina of time but this one seems way harder anyone has a recommendation should I play it?
@@manzithegamer2563 It's not. I'd say it's about the same difficulty as Ocarina just 2d instead of 3d. It's still my favorite Zelda to this day. They have A Link Between Worlds on the 3ds that is similar to ALLTP if you have a 2ds or 3ds, it's really good too.
As a kid in the 1980's, we really did defeat these games like they were a real life RPG. You heard stories from friends about where items might be, you might know someone who knows how to defeat a certain dungeon or boss, so you bring them into your house as a party member. We conquered these games collectively as a neighborhood, and the real victory was the friends we made along the way...
That sound do awesome, wish i was able to experience that with friends. I was alone in liking these games for several years....sigh
Hope you check out the rest of the channel at your leisure
I’m imagining a neighborhood group of kids walking into a living room and then that Chrono Trigger noise that signals an impending fight goes off and all the kids assume battle poses in front of the TV. Your description is so true lol. I would shelve games for a long time when I was a kid because I couldn’t beat levels/bosses, but then you’d blow the dust off the cartridge to return months/years later, beat the level and it and felt like you had just summited Mt Everest. Part of me misses it but god damn it could be annoying 😂
This game was Amazing, even 30+ years later its one of my top games.
Still love it myself to this day. Very Very Font memories. Thanks for checking this out!
Thought experiment: Aliens invade and say, unless you can beat a link to the past in under 3 hours the whole Earth is toast. Are we boned?
It is definitely the best Zelda game. I may be speaking from nostalgia bias, but that’s okay. It’s certainly top 3 otherwise.
Just played through it on switch.
What are the other three?
This game still holds up incredibly well even today. Both graphically and in the playstyle.
Agreed. I did another video on the NES Zeldas, so check those out for some more sweet nostalgia.
It would be nice to redo it with better graphics... and slightly tougher bosses... but change nothing about the gameplay, this is how Zelda should be... and how they should have kept it.
@haywoodjablowme2192 kinda like A link between worlds but get rid Ravios item shop. Agreed. I cannot get into these newer Zeldas. Ocarina is dope though and my favorite game because it takes this template and transcribes it to 3D.
Nah the gameplay sucks,
@@voltron77 no need to reply to every single comment lol
Always been my favorite Zelda game since the early 90s
It was for a long time....until Ocarina came out.
I literally lost track of time getting sucked into this game, it was so good.
Awesome. It never gets old. Hope you check out the rest of the channel and find something that you may like...
I couldn’t complete this game until my late 30s… I’m impressed that you could do it at age 8. I really think this kind of videogames can teach you a lot, I hope I can motivate my daughter into the Zelda franchise.
It taught me puzzle solving and expanded my vocabulary. The magic of these games make it timelesd and i think your daughter will have no problem getting into the franchise. Hope you check out the rest of the channel. Thanks for watching
well, i finnished it as a kid, too. But back then I had just two or three other games. So it was a question of options, and less a question of skill ;)
@sleepnt992 This was my second SNES game, the only other game i owned for a whole month was Super Mario World. I got Mario Kart and Turtles in time that christmas and didnt own anymore games for a whole year. I was a kid and my parents were having financial difficulty at the time....
The exact same situation with the exact same games :) (later on) But even a family with not such a tight budget would rarely had more game. Games in the 90s were really expensive. So one game could be the one game for month or even a year... So more incentive to run with "this one" game.
I am really happy that it was LTTP for me.
I also hope that my kids will love this game (or other retro games) to some degree - not for my ego, but to acknowledge a good (designed) game and not just folllow the question or exclamation mark of modern games... or worst case: playing mobile games!
Yeah. The SNES was 200 us dollars in 1991 and games were 49.99 to 69.99. I remember Mario RPG was the latter. Games ranged from in todays dollars 107 to 134 dollars. The SNES when it first came out would be 450 bucks.
I still love this game to this day. Definitely my favourite
This was a really good retrospective! I totally forgot how much I hated that Turtle Rock dungeon!
Thanks. This took me two weeks to make. I try to put my own personal story to it making it my own...
Love the retrospective...
I've have to be honest... For me personally:- I try to like lots of games during the 16bit era but I can definitely declare that "The Legend of Zelda-A Link to the Past" is my personal all time favourite game!
It absolutely refined the mould for many of the Zelda games straight up until Breath of the Wild.
For me; it does so much right, it has a gorgeous atmosphere without being too intense, easy to get into gameplay, exceptionally rewarding puzzles that don't require too much hard thinking, awesome items that allow for a way to overcome numerous problem solving..
Gorgeous soundtrack that is utterly nostalgic to the ears of those who played this in its hayday (which I did)
& most importantly:- NO pressure to beat the game hastily! There is so much stuff to do & it's clear that Nintendo intended this game to be played how the players want to play this game!
Though I could never find that Chris Houlihan room though!? HMMMM?
Anyways... Fine video sir! Fine video l
Thank you so much. It's in a fight for the top with Ocarina as my all time favorite Zelda. Mario RPG is what I'm currently working on and hope to have it out soon
@@Nerdporeal Perfectly welcome
Go around the castle and from the west side go south through a wooded area go east to castle front gates, continue around to where the bush covers the hole. Go in the hole... something about approaching this hole from the west triggers the C houlihan room.
The room with all the rupees right? I accidentally discovered it one day and was like....is the game screwing with me
I was playing this game when it came out. I was young, and it was hard. I didn't end up beating it until I was a teenager.
I was never born in the 80s or 90s but I have nostalgia for the nes and snes
Its the same for me with listening to oldies, and movies and shows from the years before i was born too. 60s 70s and early 80s. Im with ya bro
Nothing against younger people doing retrospectives on this, but it's nice to hear from someone else who played it when it was new. Also, major props for catching the pendants and crystals after they fall. That's the only way to do it.
In case anyone is new to this game and did not know, you do not have to do the seven crystals in order except for the first one provided you have the items needed to complete them. In some cases you do need to complete one dungeon in order to get the items for another or at least enough to get the big key and open the big chest, but another case is the items that you need are located outside of the dungeon in which case you can obtain them and do that dungeon in whichever order you like. For example you could go and get the Titans mitt without conquering that boss and then use it to access a lot of the things that are blocked by the black rocks
Or try to get the hookshot, titans mitt, and Cane of Somaria without beating their respective dungeons, and heading straight for Turtle Rock. I would never do that but it is an option if you are sick of doing them in the "proper order"
This was my first Zelda game, over 30 years later and I’m still playing it. It’s also fun playing the game completely out of order. There’s a glitch on death mountain where you teleport to the dark world and light world on the bridge. You can beat 5 of the dark world dungeons using the level 1 sword.
I did not ever know that! I will have to find out how to do this
@@Nerdporeal Yeah there’s an old video uploaded years ago that explains it in detail. It’s surprisingly quite easy to do. You can collect most of the heart containers, and also you can go to each dungeon and get all the sub weapons. Including the titan’s gloves so you can get the level 3 sword way early.
You’ll be OP for the desert palace and tower of Hera.
The variety of the boss battles in this game were ahead of their time to this day. Think about how well written this game is, a special item's function is woven into gameplay, boss battles, level design and the story. It's a nesting doll of great game design.
Yes exactly. I think some things were losr from original Zelda but this game and Ocarina really set the standard. The newer games i dont like nearly as much because much of the magic based on what you said was lost. Those games wastes too much of the players time...imo
What an unimaginably incredible game. Thanks for doing it justice with this amazing storytelling style recap!!
Thanks. My type of retrospective...
Nice video! This is still the best Zelda game ever created. OoT is good, but it’s just this game, in 3D, with less dungeons. 🤷🏻♂️
This game deserves a high budget remake. Full blown 3D, scale the game to make the world a bit bigger overall. The only thing I’d like to see them do in a remake, is maybe tweak the visuals inside some dungeons, to further separate them from each other, as well as new music so each dungeon can have its own track. The cartridge size, limited tile sets and music, which is why the dungeons don’t have wild diversity, or separate music. Think something along the line of Link between Worlds changes.
I love getting 100% in this game. I even tried out the randomizer, where it forces you to know the location of every chest in the game to get 100% or even just to beat it. It was a blast!
I think the story in oot is better and the dungeons take more time to explore but the similarities are there. Hope you check out the oot video and the rest of the channel. Thanks for checkin this out!
I like how this game doesn't have an actual time limit so you can spend some time missing around with the mini games and stuff, some of which can be quite useful. One of my favorite is the one in the village where you can pay some rupees to open up two chests, and there's a piece of heart in one of them and lots of other goodies. That actually helps me a lot with getting the rupees to get the flippers Since those cost like 500 if I'm not mistaken.
I used to collect rupees in the castle dungeon and get treasures in kakariko before getting the bottle for 100. So much treasure and things to discover. Did you like the shovel digging game in the dark world.....piece of heart if lucky
Freeze the enemies and break them with the hammer for magic refills. That's why Ether is the best thing in the game. The second best is the Magic Powder to change antiferies into real fairies. You can sprinkle the powder on the Rabbit beams and change them into a ferie as well. You have to find the Ice Rod in the over world not a dungeon to beat the last maiden boss. I got all the way there and did not have it one time.
Yeah ice rod was the item Sahasrahla tells you to get after you beat the Eastern Palace. I love the fact that you could also obtain tools or items outside the dungeons as well, something i wish later games did more of. Check out my other Zelda videos. My ocarina one is my largest video yet!
A true masterpiece in videogaming history. The first great Zelda.
Did you enjoy the vid?
@@Nerdporeal I enjoy everything related to this game, my favorite ever
Still the best Zelda game IMO, an absolute masterpiece!
It is number two for me after Ocarina. Thanks for checking this out and Hope you check out the latter retrospective and my other Nintendo content and stay Nerdporeal
Fantastic review, man. You are very talented! I especially liked how descriptive and articulate you were in your script. Your closing line also got it just right, I think. Thank you for this excellent treatment of the subject.
I appreciate it sir. I hope you check out some of my other retrospectives. A 5 hour ocarina of time one may or may not be present....
I loved this video. My first time seeing you. Instant subscriber!!!❤❤❤❤
“A link to the Past” in my all-time favorite Zelda game. Other games have surpassed it, technologically, but none are as beautiful, nor as charming. It just feels complete. It captures everything a Zelda game should be. The music, design, story, exploration, and look fully encapsulates “The Legend of Zelda” as it was always intended; past, present, and future.
I appreciate it, thank you! I agree that it is a quintessential game that made Zelda what it is... i hope you check out the rest of the channel and find something that interests you. Other game retrospectives like this one are there too!
I definitely plan on it. You look like you have great stuff.
I've always loved this game. Entering the final area of the Lost Woods and claiming the Master Sword was the most epic experience of my life when I played it for the first time as a young teenager. I also felt a strange sense of accomplishment when I discovered I could beat the Dark World dungeons out of order. I had trouble with the third one, so I left and tried the Thieves' Hideout instead. Getting the Titan's Mitt and tempered sword made dungeon 3 a lot easier! I also ended up beating Misery Mire before the ice dungeon. I felt like I'd somehow outsmarted the people who made the game. And that was even before I realized just how much having the orange cane in the ice dungeon trivialized what is otherwise one of the most frustrating puzzles in the game. 😆
I had the same issue, it took me a while to figure out how to get to the Dark Forest until I finally found the portal because that and the Dark Kakariko village were cut off from the rest of the Dark World.
I've never gone into the ice dungeon without that staff! No thank you, you can keep that puzzle.
The backtracking wasnt that bad haha but i dont think i ever played it that way. I may be overdue for another replay
Great retrospective! On to your Ocarina of Time retrospective!
Thanks Ahmad! Ocarina is an epic I had to split into three parts. Intermissions too!
Played this one as a kid. This really took me back!
Im glad you enjoyed.
Man got this game when I was like 7, hated it at first because I couldn’t get out of the raining section in the beginning and it looked nothing like the box art on the back 😂 was to young to fully understand what was going on and it took me nearly 1 and something years of on off play and better reading skills to finally understand what was going on enough to finally complete it. 😅
Ended up being one of my favourite games and franchises of all time.
I was stuck in the rain section too for a few days i think. I was 8 when i got this. I learned quite a bit from this game
great narration bro. love the game!
Thanks. Hope you check out my other vids too. Ocarina one especially
During the "Gameplay Intro" section I felt like "what's this? why are you telling me this boring stuff, reading out loud a list of actions and inputs"? I have to admit: it's truly not interesting at all today, but I remember back then this was a huge deal - having that many input options to move around and to interact with the world in so many different ways. Realizing this, I had to smile - thanks for including that section! :)
Im saying this from the pov of a young kid in 1992 playing this for the first time
GREAT JOB Nerdporeal Lifeform. Thanks for this !
Thanks for watching. Expect more like this in the coming months
I love your use of OoT music for climbing death mountain, etc. Great video.
I thought that was from Twilight Princess. I abuse the hell out of the ALBW soundtrack.
This is the best link to the past retrospective I saw on TH-cam.
Thank you very much. Trying to learn from the best. Expect more down the line...
@user-duynvldqli take this guy to the party takashi tezika recomends miyamoto will want to return for sorcery you guys would want to see the Gq's 04:33 on the new playstation's selection& Sagiens assasination report,😀👰♀🧙♀👼🐝✨
Ah yes, the Bug Catcher's Net: the most OP item in Zelda history this side of the Empty Bottles. XD
After that the bottle stole the role of the net. Such an iconic tool.....
Best game of all time for me, partly because you play it on literally anything. I can AI upscale it to 4K with a gaming PC, or play it on my phone. Best way though, is on SNES with a CRT TV.. the way I played it when I was 3 years old
Thanks for sharing. It's my second favorite Zelda after Ocarina. Both games just blew me away.
I finally Had time to check this out! Well done, Major Gaming Historian feel. By far my Fav Zelda Game. Great job!
Gaming Historian is great. One of many models...thanks its an honor
This was my favorite zelda game ever I loved seasons and oracles to. All the birds eye view games. Zelda 1 classic to.
Only made me enjoy mm and oot even more having grown up on the story. A link to the past is one of my first literal memories as a person that exists.
Thanks for sharing. It was mine until ocarina came out. I did a similar on the first two zeldas too for your viewing pleasure.
@Nerdporeal I kinda went backwards playing them snes,64,gb games & then the regular old nes. I'd played ALTTP Zelda 1 was the last zelda game I'd ever finished.
This game tho has all the story in it about the triforce and overall a good amount of story and the 64 blew it up even more it was an absolute Goliath of a story.
I think I just like the simplicity of the overhead and the puzzle solving. Seems with oot there wasn't much fighting out of the dungeons. Nice retrospective/summary thanks for the video
Check out my ocarina video. It's a five hour epic!
Just finished beating it again. Definitely a gem
Noice. Hope you check out the rest of the channel and find something that interests you.
This is a great game to play with perma-death rules. In such a run whenever you go game over in some save file you delete that save file. This adds extra tension to the game, makes resource management more important (especially red potions and fairies), and adds extra challenging by forcing you to become consistent at surviving in order to beat the whole game in one run.
Also great is that the first part of the game does not contain a lengthy boring tutorial section and can be done faster once you learn where everything you want is. It is also helps that a lot of the power-ups can be acquired whenever you want, so you can plan to get those at opportune times.
Interesting. I did beat this once without ever dying out of many times so I can see the tension. This will be a future stream of me and a buddy playing this. Hope you can come by!
Really love the Zelda animated battle theme remix in the background at the beginning.
It wanted to portray this video as a sequel to the retrospective of the first two games where I mention the series in passing. Check it out if you haven't. Excuse me princess....lol
Forever Best Zelda
Thanks for checking this out. Its second after Ocarina for me but one of the best experiences ive ever had. I hope you check out the channel and find something that interests you. Stay Nerdporeal!
I played it on the gameboy advance and fell in love with it. It's to this day my favourite 2D zelda
Mine too. Coming up soon will be an Ocarina of Time retrospective.

@@Nerdporeal yes! Going to check them out as this was a great one. Loved this game so glad found it. Videos with re-reviewing old games is really cool. Brings back nostalgia of the games
You may like my ocarina of time video. 5 epic hours. And many others
I cant believe that after all these years I never knew Link's uncle was mortally wounded or even wounded in the first place. This entire time I thought he was there waiting for Link because he knew that Zelda was going to summon him and he wanted to ensure he had the right tools to help her. 😂😂
I was 8 when i played this and didnt realize how high the stakes ACTUALLY were. Thanks for checkin this one out. Hope you check out the channel at your leisure
I remember cutting my rpg teeth on this game and has always been in my top 5. Loved it and played it numerous times in my life and still it remains fresh and replayable. I remember there was a rumor circulating back then that if you typed in a a certain name on the enter name screen you would start with 20 hearts and 4 bottles or something of this nature! 😂 haha had no way to look up the truth then.
I never heard about this rumor. Interesting
If you think about it the party system idea kinda came back in Tears of the Kingdom. Since in that game you can have all 4 avatar/spirits of the characters you help out in that game follow you around and you can use their abilities anytime you want plus even when your in combat they'll fight alongside you.
Sounds about right. Haven't really gotten into TOTK. Too much time wasted imo. I hoped you enjoyed the video. I've done one for original Zeldas and Ocarina

a….. LINK …. To the past, I see what you did there. And I support it
Thats all Nintendo. When i was little i thought Link went to the past. Like Marty in Back to the Future. I was dumb....
Obvio
Thanks for the warning about the spoilers. I need to get off my rear and start playing these.
Still my favorite Zelda game. The subsequent Game Boy and 3D entries just really don't do it for me in comparison (I did like Link between Worlds on the 3DS though for obvious reasons).
I think I was more invested in Ocarina but i was much older than when i first played ALTTP. I also think Minish Cap is a worthy top down 2D successor to this game
Beautiful perspective man. We’ll done. it deserved this

@@Nerdporeal Pretty Cool, thanks.
I remember this game fairly well, but not perfectly as I haven't played it in years. Unfortunately my vision has deteriorated enough that I can't really see it anymore but I have beaten it when I was a kid
Im sorry to hear. I hope this vid allowed you to reexperience it in a profound way. Hope you check out some of my other vids and see what interests you.
The best 2D Zelda for sure and one of the greatest, though Ocarina of Time still rivals it.

Would it have been possible to expand the number of button inputs by using combos like A + B = combo1 = world map??
Fighting games could register dual inputs i think?? idk
Best Zelda hands down...
Close second to Ocarina for me
My all time favourite game ❤
Did you enjoy the video? I covered Ocarina of TIme in a five hour retrospective
This game is a keeper
Favorite Dungeon?
Wanted something to relax to and had to stop watching due to spoilers - yes spoilers, haha. I'm in my 30's but never has a SNES .. that's what my cousins owned. I never got to play this in my youth. Got it on an emulator to see how it feels and I'm hooked.. blind feels the best way to play though I am grateful for some tips that probably would've saved me a lot of running around from the little bit I did watch. Looking forward to coming back to this once I beat the game.
Im jealous you are experiencing this for the first time. You are in for a treat!
Still my personal favourite of all the Zelda games (I'm currentky playing, and massively enjoying, Tiers of thr Kingdom) and probably my favourite game of all time, purely for the nostalgia factor. I was 12 when this released, and I had never before been so entirely hook(shot)ed on a game, where I wanted to play it nonstop, to the exclusion of everything else.
I've since invested omin a SNES Mini, which is almost the perfect console. So many absolute classics, that some were just bound to end up missing from the Mini. Games like Cybernator and Uni Rally were relative obscenities, sadly. I still have the original boxed versions luckily, and I even have my OG, 100% authentic working SNES from the 1990s, bought with my own hard-saved cash! 😅
Thanks for checking this out. I've done other retrospectives like this including the early Mario games and others of that era.
Ganons Theme ... So ominous!
The Priest theme has been attached to Ganon since this game. Love the final battle theme.
Nice video I really enjoyed it
Thanks for the kind words. There's other retrospectives like this one that I've done. Hope you enjoy them at your leisure
This is the last Zelda game I enjoyed. Wonderful game.
What about Ocarina? That was even better imo.
Lovely video. Any plans to do The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening next?
Eventually. You should check out my 5 hour Ocarina of Time one. There are other game retrospectives on my channel if you are interested. Thanks for checking this out. Stay Nerdporeal
Great video !
Thanks for the kind words. There's more retrospectives like it for other classics if you're interested.
This game is so god damn good. Lol. I finally just started playing a randomizer for this game. Its awesome. Forgot about where the cape was originally. So thats a place i havent been checking. So that puts me at like 198 out of apparently 216 possible places to find a random item. Lol. Its like a race to 100% the game. Unless you get every mandatory item to beat it sooner than that.
I will have to check out a randomizer at some point. Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope you find something else on the channel that interests you, covered the NES Zeldas and a 5 hour Ocarina Retrospective. Stay Nerdporeal!
Was my favorite Zelda game of all time
It was mine.....until Ocarina.....it's a very close second for me. Only SNES game I like more is Super Metroid....
On the seventh dungeon there is one other Mario thing that you didn't mention, the blocks that have the fire things going around in circles forget what they are but they are very reminiscent of Mario
The Fire Bars. Did you know they were made for Zelda first but looked better in Super Mario Bros? Wild
Great retrospective and easily your best video, grew up watching my brother play this game. It is perhaps Nintendo's greatest game of all times in my view.
I wonder if maybe Nintendo should have turned it into a novel or something (were there any Zelda novels I'd be keen to read them regardless of which game they depict).
Anyways, any chance of a retrospective of Twilight Princess or Earthbound?
Appreciated. I dont agree on this being nintendos best game but it was mine until ocarina came out. Those comic/manga i mention are the only other story adaptations. No Zelda novels sorry. Im curious your thoughts on the ocarina video which was the one i really wanted to do. Im not sure if you commented on that one....
To answer your question...eventually. Next Zelda project will either be Majoras Mask or Links Awakening but even that is further in the pipeline. Edutaining Mario games and possibly Chrono Trigger are next on the video game docket
@@Nerdporeal MM is cool, can't wait to see it!
@TheBrothersHyrule i gotta replay it
im late, but this is a great retrospective! i never beat this game as a kid, but recently picked it back up and destroyed ganon! i think it might be my favorite zelda, its between this or links awakening.
Thank you so much for the kind words. Thats cool that you finally got the chance to complete this one. If you are interested i did other retrospectives on other games. My Ocarina of Time one is my magnum opus
@@Nerdporeal no problem! i'll definitely give ur OoT retrospective a view!
Hopefuuly you enjoyed it
I'm in search of a SNES classic mini...I've heard they have both this game and earthbound!!
They do. Also Mario RPG, Final Fantasy 3, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World. It's by far the best of the mini consoles
The best LOZ game to date.
Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you check out my other Nintendo content if it interests you and Stay Nerdporeal
it was in 2003 also released for the game boy advance and that version makes more sence.
the snes says seven wise men, but the game boy advance version, and he says it to, says "so the king commanded 7 sages" so yes, that is more in line with ocarina of time and i will check that now
Yeah they updated the text, I believe and that was it. I did recently do a five hour epic Ocarina of Time Retrospective split into three (like the Triforce.....) and I hope you enjoy it as well. Thank you so much for watching!
"Sage" just means "wise man/person". Simply different ways of translating the same phrase.
@QuasarEE The Sage in this one was the guy in the Sanctuary
Best retrospective on TH-cam! Keep the Zelda coming! You should also make a video about how breath of the wild broke Zelda-and not always for good.
Thanks Marty... I have an essay about BOTW
Yeah botw sucks
@@rickthomasvendor disappointed I was, underwhelming.
@@Nerdporeal true. Great vid by the way. Its kinda almost a lets play fast forwarded with highlights and voice over. U should do more of that!
@@rickthomasvendor Absolutely, I did something similar with Super Mario RPG recently. Expect Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time soon....
Great video for a great game
Thank you. I've done similar videos for other Nintendo games including ocarina of time.
@@Nerdporeal Oh yes yes. I fell asleep to it last night. It's like 5 hours long lol.
Have you played Tears of the Kingdom?
It's incredible.
@@McGomezAddamsi did. I have the same issues with it as BOTW. Feels like the player wastes too much time
Interesting video. Thanks for putting this up.
Thanks for checking this out. This is such a great game
My all time favorite Zelda and I played Breath of the Wild I know i have yet to play Tears yet but that Light and Dark world the graphics and the music were so good it is my 2nd fav game of all time 2nd only to the original FFVII
Another great game. ALTTP was my favorite Zelda....til Ocarina. Super Metroid surpassed ALTTP as my favorite SNES game as an adult. Didnt care for BOTW and TOTK feels too much of the same.
This was a wonderful retrospective. Thank you. Not sure why you got so many downvotes...
Thank you for the kind words. All of it is engagement. I hope you check out my first Zelda and Zelda 2 video and my 5 hour ocarina of time one.
My Dad called me from his work when i was a kid. A guy he worked with was struggling with Zelda 3 and was stuck. He put the guy on the phone and I asked him where he was. I told him he needed to shoot the statue in the eye and that the wall would open up to a new area. Funny to think Zelda 3 came up in their conversation and my Dad thought to call me to help him out. I miss my Dad.
That is such an awesome story! Thank you so much for sharing that. Its so cool that your dad helped a guy through you beat this game. I lost my dad too several years ago too. To our fathers, Memory Eternal!
It’s embarrassing how long it took me to figure out how to get the book of madora off the top of that damn shelf. I guess I was like 8 but still. One of my all time favs and all time best memories of early childhood gaming.
Took me several days to figure out where to go. As a kid i did not immediately pick up on what i was supposed to do but when i finally did, it was a marathon. The book of mudora i solved by accident with the pegasus shoes lol
Lol 19:11 the sound effect for Eeeeee wasn't needed but a nice touch.
Lol that was me. Expressing how i read it as a kid lol.
My only gripe with the game is the dungeon music. It's very short and relative and it's the same for every dungeon. Thankfully they realized this and made some varied dungeon music for links awakening.
Yeah thats why i used ALBW tracks for the dungeons. Hope you check out the channel and see any other vids that interest you. I did a 5 hr OOT one.
I don't know I sort of like it. It is similar to how Mario World's castles all had the same music. They did change that with Links Awakening and then Ocarina of Time.
My all time favorite Zelda game! Do u think it’s possible they may do a remake of a link to the past one day? Duhzeez? Like they did links awakening and mario rpg coming out ? I’m excited for that also. I know they did a link between worlds but I hope they do remake of link to the past
A Link Between Worlds started as a remake of ALTTP. Its the closest thing you are gonna get. I hope you check out the rest of the channel. Stay Nerdporeal
the only part that got me tripped up because i did not read the hints like i should have at the beginning of playing the first time was the witch brew part to get the triforce 3 parts in 3 dungeons exposed to combine to later get the master sword
You mean the pendants? Eastern Palace, Desert Palace, and Tower of Hera? That took me a while to figure out....but once I did.....it got better. What about the Witch Brew? You give her a Mushroom from the Lost Woods while she quotes MacBeth and the Magic Powder eventually turns up at the Potion Shop.
8:30 Link being a good nephew, follows him to the castle after destroying all the clay pots in the house for no reason
Hahaha.
such a great game.
Yes, my second favorite on the SNES after Super Metroid
@@Nerdporeal yep, now I gotta go get one, I've got the NES plugged in, but ya Super Metroid, these are the best games.
The golden land.. sounds like the garden of Eden and the flaming swords going back and forth to guard from anyone entering in ever again
No cherubim guarding the place. You go in, but you dont come out without the magic mirror
Still my favorite video game soundtrack of all time.
I love this one too. My favorite of all time may be Chrono Trigger
@@Nerdporeal can’t go wrong with that one either. They don’t make ‘em like this and Chrono Trigger anymore unfortunately.
No they dont. Music now is mostly generic and immemorable. Thanks for checking this out. Hope you check out the rest of the channel and find something that interests you. Stay Nerdporeal
38:58 Exactly why I loved older Zelda games and really dislike the latest 2 😔
I couldnt get myself to keep playing totk. I forced myself to finish botw and they dont feel satisfying or even as interesting as the earlier games. Feels like too much of the players time is wasted
I always thought the pink was supposed to be interpreted as kinda redish hair for those crt tvs (i never really grew up with one so i couldnt see if that mightve been the case) but now after watching this that sounds dumb
Its weird because his hair in the concept art is a blonde.....but pink haired Link is canon i guess lol
How did we get the blacksmith before the titans mitt?
We can't. We need the Titans Mitt to lift the black rocks
You are right. Error on my part.
Zelda came box with my Super Nintendo when Best Buy first open
I did not know that. Thanks for sharing!
I read the same Zelda comic in Swedish Nintendo Power at the time! And all of us who played this on release say Zelda 3, not “a link to the past”. Because we had been reading about it for years as Zelda 3 and even after release everyone just kept calling it that.
I loved Zelda 3 so much. In terms of magical childhood gaming memory, it possibly ranks as number 1. Unlike everyone else I wasn’t super impressed by Zelda 64, sure I loved it, but it didn’t have the magic of Zelda 3. I think I didn’t like the more realistic N64 graphics. For me Zelda always had some kind of Miyazaki anime magic to it, and that was represented much better in A Link to the Past. It’s also the reason the first 3D Zelda I really loved was Wind Waker.
These days Breath of the Wild is the best Zelda by far. Now in my 40s, I much prefer the freedom of Zelda 1, and BoTW is the first Zelda to fully return to that (should be said the great sea in WW had some of this too). I also love that Nintendo in the end went with the anime inspired graphics. I think BoTW and TotK are absolutely gorgeous, still the most beautiful games I’ve seen on any system.
I would LOVE a remake of The Legend of Zelda. But rather than the claymation of Links Awakening remake I hope for contemporary pixel art style. Still using clearly visible pixels but infinitely more detailed and with advanced lighting and sound like a lot or contemporary indie games. I would also hope Nintendo would include advanced physics like in the BotW mock up Nintendo made in Zelda 1 style.
Thank you for sharing that. I disagree on BOTW being the best Zelda, it's my least favorite to be honest. It's more like a typical open world game than a Zelda game. Even the original Zelda had more structure, it wasn't totally free, and was streamlined in size and had more incentive to explore. The rewards and incentives in BOTW are not that rewarding....broken swords, no dungeons (shrines and guardian beasts don't make the cut), lack of variety of enemies in a MASSIVE Open World and lack of meaningful side quests. I prefer the earlier games and those games have not been replaced with a better system imo. BOTW is not a bad game and its the most beautiful but it leaves much to be desired. I have no interest in replaying the game and I've played it almost as long as you did.
Playing Tears of the Kingdom cant help but remind me of this game and its opening story, imagine this game remade with Breath of the Wilds engine
Although for some reason I think Nintendo has it in their head that walking back the IP back to it's roots is somehow a bad thing
I started playing TOTK and don't see the correlation. I did just land after the initial sky play so I may not be far enough. The world is way too big for ALTTP. I'd prefer to see something more in line with OOT or WW.
Original Zelda still had better structure and a world streamlined. You gather tools and use them to help with more difficult levels later on. I loved the idea of burning every tree and bombing everywhere....an art lost after the OG. I didn't get that same charm in BOTW and TOTK so far.
@@Nerdporeal true
@@Nerdporeal I understand that, there's a reason the classics are so highly regarded
What a....Legendary game.
Agreed. Hope you check out the rest of the channel
@@Nerdporeal I will! If the rest is like this I am sure there's plenty of content for me to consume.
What is the game at 4:50-4:52?
A Link Between Worlds on 3DS, a spiritual successor to ALTTP.
This game is a masterpiece. My dream is one day they'll retell the story of this game in a fully fleshed out 3D game like Tears of the Kingdom
Agreed, however Perhaps more like Twilight Princess for me if done in 3D. Did you enjoy the video?
FWIW, Zelda a Link Between Worlds on the 3DS is very close to being this. It is pretty great in my opinion.
This game was originally a remake of ALTTP but became its own game. Some say Ocarina is a 3d version of ALTTP
