The Common Cold: How We Catch It and Treat The Symptoms

- MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: The upper respiratory tract consists of the nose, mouth, pharynx, and larynx. As air passes through them, these structures provide physical and immunologic barriers to infectious pathogens and other debris. In the nose, viruses, bacteria, and other debris stick to the mucus in the nasal passageway, while the nasal mucosa, warms and humidifies the air. The shape of the pharynx forces air to take a 90-degree turn downward. Larger airborne particles can't make the turn, so they get caught in the mucosa of the posterior wall instead. The palatine and pharyngeal tonsil contain immune cells that engulf and destroy pathogens that land on them. Air then passes through the larynx on its way to the lower respiratory tract. The common cold, also known as nasopharyngitis or acute rhinitis is the most common viral upper respiratory tract infection. Cold viruses, most commonly the rhinovirus, enter the body when contaminated hands touch the nose or mouth, or when virus-filled droplets in the air are inhaled. Then the virus invades the mucus membrane of the upper airway, resulting in an inflammation of the invaded areas. Inflammation of the nasal membranes can result in excessive mucus secretion, nasal congestion, inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, itching, and sneezing. Inflammation of the pharyngeal lining can result in a sore or scratchy throat, and painful or difficult swallowing. Laryngeal involvement can result in a cough. There is no cure for the common cold, so treatments focus on alleviating symptoms. Common lifestyle modifications include rest, and increased fluid intake. Medical options include Ibuprofen for inflammation, pain, and fever. Acetaminophen, for pain and fever. And oral decongestants, or nasal sprays to relieve nasal symptoms. Antibiotics are not used as they're only effective against bacteria, not viruses. ♪ [music] ♪

Years ago, I used to watch this channels video's over and over again and be fascinated everytime by the animations and the physiology of the human body, I'm now a 5th year med student and this channel is still great in how simply it explains different topics ❤
So imagine throughout the human history, we've advanced for cancer drugs...but simplest cold is incurable.
Seriously...
All viral infections are incurable through medication. Your immune system fights the foreign virus invasion. Hence, vaccines are given for such infections.
In case of rhinovirus, the virus itself mutates quite fast. There are over 150 variants of rhinovirus if my memory doesn't fail me therefore you need to get vaccinated everytime a new variant is discovered (almost every year).
P.S. Another virus with great mutation potential that you might have heard of is HIV.
Cold is a virus just like corona. You can't cure a virus you can only treat it.
Very important to us
Thanks
Fantastic video, thanks a lot.
Excellent video Thank You ❤
Thanks
Nice Information

Really useful 👏🏼
Very educative, thank you very much @Nucleus Medical Media 😊.
I have cold rn and TH-cam recommended this at right time
cold is bad. nice and informative content😇
I am suffering from cold 😷 at the same time.
During the flu increase your intake of vitamin C to boost your immunity
Can a sore throat start in the morning quickly
❤❤❤❤❤
I caught a bad cold twice within six weeks of each other over the winter, but fully recovered within a week.
Nasal fever sore throat cold antibiotic teacher ji
The amount of common colds I’ve had is unreal
❤❤❤
Made a video on stammering
If its not curable by antibiotics, why do i always get back to health after taking antibiotics?
Every time,I’ve got common cold in this video
Hurry up and find the cure already medical industry
It's both extremely difficult as multiple viruses cause this type of illness and they mutate incredibly quickly, and it's not a priority because it's one of the lightest sicknesses around.
There are literally millions of mutations of the Flu virus
@@danielszekeres8003Plus there’s too much money to be made from all of the cold medicines that are on the shelves. Think about it, if all of those medications were no longer needed that would eliminate a LOT of profits for a lot of companies. Just saying
❤❤❤😮
Damn I don’t have tonsils anymore lol
You may still have. I heard that modern surgery on tonsils is only done to trim the tonsils, not remove completely.
There’s a saying:
If you catch cold, you should take medications for a week and it’ll go away, if not you’ll have to wait for a week to go away by itself😅
How water or fluids intake help to recover from common flu??? Anyone else ans pls
So it doesn't happen because of intake of cold food products or taking a cold water bath?
Of course not. You get sick from bacteria or a virus. Cold doesn't directly make you ill but it does help... but not us unfortunately but the pathogen. 😅
this lady sounds congested
In my country, 99.9% of the population believe that the major cause of the 'cold' is...cold. Everyone thinks that they get sick because of the airconditioner, fan, wind from the open windows and freezing temperature outside. That's why all people always shut down the windows if there's a slight wind, always avoid having aircon ON when someone is in the room etc. Every time they get sick, they say 'fk, it's because I used aircon/didn't have enough clothes on when walked outside'.
Is this myth common for the rest of the world, too? Every time I try to tell my friends or family this, they get so defensive and absolutely refuse to believe that the only reason for catching a 'cold' is not cold itself, but the viruses or bacteria. Oh and also the majority of the people use kinda expensive antiviral drugs, which are not proven to have any effect. These drugs are in top-10, even top-5 of all the medicine people buy in drug stores here. It's impossible to convince most people that it's a waste of money
Sadly in my country most people think like this.
Yeap, I get you, most people in my country think like that but those are old wives' tales that are passed down from generation to generation. People call me either stupid or crazy when I tell them that colds are NOT caused by the cold itself. Hopefully, future generations won't deal with these stupid stories. 😅
Actually the people have a very good point: A little drop in temperature in the mucos already reduces immune power, so the rhinoviruses have a very good chance to infect you when you don't keep warm. And: That's why sports (raising your body temperature by musclework) and sauna (gymnnastics for your vessels by hot/cold training to better perfuse the mucosas) boost your immune power.
It's not a myth, just another risk factor for infection with the viruses which are around you all the time :-) Keep fit ;-)
@@2Nickel2Welli actually, you just contradicted yourself... People believe that the actual cold (weather) makes you sick but as you said it's just a risk factor - it makes your body more susceptible to pathogens (virus/bacteria), so in reality the cold itself does nothing to you directly. Just an example, if that were the case thousands of people - including myself - would be sick all the time because we do cold showers each day and nothing ever happened or another example I went out of a shower with my hair almost completely wet and went straight outside, with a wind blowing outside, guess what happened? Nothing. My hair just got dried.

Most common infection all over the world, i guess.
ive had a wretched cold for the last week, the 2 nd one i received in 6 weeks and it is absolutely horrible sensation! my throat was/is so sore it hurts to swallow, along with a hacking cough. sadly i dont think they will ever find a cure for the so called common cold. it is a nasty unwanted invasion into your body thats for sure, forget about taking remedies a cold will take its course whether or not you take anything for it. the sore throat is the worst part of it along with losing your sense of taste and smell.
Me if i have this symptoms i just use nasal spray with agua oxinada with a salt and water on it
Comment for algorithm
I just take vitamin C, eat and take a nap😊😊😊 and I'm good.
😽
If you treat your common cold, you will be fine in 7 days.
If you won’t, it’ll take a week.
