Common Grackle - Feeding in The Wild

  • Common Grackles are blackbirds that look like they've been slightly stretched or even like a shrunken crow. They have a more tapered bill and glossy bodies that resemble an "oil spill" in the sunlight. Grackles walk around lawns on their long legs. They gather in high in trees, mainly evergreens, and make a lot of noise. They do not have the most pleasant sound, so they get a bad rap. They do eat crops (corn) and of course they eat bird seed. I have even heard they eat garbage. In fact, Grackles are the number one threat to corn crop. Farmers sometimes spray the corn with a foul tasting chemical (yum!). Check out their yellow eyes. They are quite a bird.
    Grackles are underrated.
(you may notice some sparrows, pigeons and red wing blackbirds in the vid)

Live with them. When Crows are present, much better. Watch Jays or Peckers. Grackles. Have some outside for years.

I was at a gas pump and one was on it, singing away, so I got to stare close up at that yellow eye. It was beautiful. See my video of them chasing a mouse away from their seed in my backyard. They are entertaining to watch.

I'm surprised it didn't eat the mouse with the seed. They may be pretty little seed eaters, but just like similar behaving crows, they fancy fresh meat in their diet from time to time. I guess they weren't in the mood for protein.

In Mexico Grackles are called "Cuervos" which you might recognize on a bottle of Jose Cuervo tequila. We have a very persistent Grackle that demands we feed him by screeching each morning. He especially likes broken tortilla chips which come from corn, but then he is a Mexican grackle!

I'm sure I've seen them around, but I don't really notice the differences amongst the black-feathered birds in my area. I should take a closer look next time.

I don't know what's the big deal about Grackles in the US, here in mexico we have the Great-tailed Grackles but i've never been bothered by them, at about 6 to 8 pm they start flying back to their trees and they make noise, and in rainy days they gather on the roof of my neighbor because a big puddle is formed there and i can see them from my window, but just at that time of the day, and it's not annoying at all, actually it's pretty cool to listen to them and watch them closely, they seem to be always alert though, when they see me they fly away.
And in the mornings i've never had a problem with them, you'll also see 1 or 2 cars full of shit once in a while lol but there are a lot of pigeons that do that too, so, not the big deal considering....Maybe the US grackle behave different? idk.
But i really love the Grackles of my area, they look so cool and elegant, specially when they land slowly.

Modern cars have massive layers of super high-tech space age polyurethane paint. It's nearly indestructible. A couple of little bird poops are not going to destroy the paint or the resale value of the car. shit wipes off. The true basis to most of the hate is unenlightened, low mentality resentment against a creature with a brain the size of a raisin. What kind of a narcissistic idiot gets butt hurt and angry over that? Go get a rag and some dish soap and wash it off. Most haters are stupid and selfish beyond belief.

I live in northern mexico and can confirm grackles are not a problem at all nor are as despised by people as in the USA.
I've seen some weird parking lot videos with thousands of grackles in texas, quantities I've never seen here.
Here I only see grackles in parks, empty lots, avenue trees, old buildings. I really like grackles too. They have a fun array of sounds and they are very social birds. Very elegant blue-black colors, tail and legs.

I usually only see Grackles in parking lots where I live, but I find them very fascinating because they mimic car alarms and other human sounds. I hear almost nothing about them, but they’re quite common and very interesting to listen to

The ones on Florida are sweet in my opinion. I don't find them bothersome at all. The ones near me are pretty chill for the most part. 🤷🤷🤷

vounching for florida too. in my area its great tailed and common grackles. i feed a group of maybe 15 tops of a mix of them plus two or three crows.
the male juvenile boattails look at you so inquisitively when they first meet you and are quick to give approving chirps and songs if you treat them nice. now if they see me at the spot, theyll perch above and start screamin or they just come straight down and wait patiently.
the common grackles are more skittish but they learn pretty quickly from the boattails and warm up faster than they otherwise would have, probably.

They sure look up in the sky often. Perhaps looking for a falcon or other bird that might end them.

When a Gracie points its beak to the sky its a threat display to other grackles and may have other uses also. When watching for hawks birds always turn head sideways so one eye can watch sky. Hey that rymed

A very smart killer of songbirds and other good critters. You may have one or two in the spring then the next time you look around there may be 50. Hard if not impossible to get rid of.
