Fledgling Grackle talking

  • This is Drogon. He is an orphaned grackle that we have raised since about he was about 3 days old. He was found with his 3 siblings in a nest that was knocked down from a bad thunderstorm. He was the only survivor that made it to sub adult hood. He is quite the clown. He gets into trouble all the time and is way too smart for his own good. This is a video of him practicing his talking. He appears to be a male, his colors are coming in more everyday. I can't wait until his eyes turn yellow. Pretty cool little bird.

Do you let your grackle go outside sometime or you always keep it inside?

Hello, I know this is an older post, but I had to comment. I have a male grackle who was either pushed or fallen out of his nest. He was three days old and I took him in. At the time we didn't know if it were girl or boy, so my daughter and I call him pretty bird, which now has changed to Babe bird. He is now 4 mos old and the love of my life. I spent everyday teaching him how to hunt an be as normal as possible. I am proud to say he is wild as can be outside and when he comes to visit me every afternoon, is tame as can be inside!! He is so smart, and so full of personality! Everyone told me he would die, he would be human imprinted, and so on. Well they can all kiss my a** because he gets the best of both worlds! He just recently got his blueish/teal and purplish shiny new feathers which confirmed his gender. I had to share this comment, because he is so special, grackles are smart and full of personality! It will be October soon, I live in Maine, so grackles migrate in that month, If mine leaves, I will be so sad, yet so proud that I successfully did my job,and hope to see him in the spring! If not, I don't mind having him around, waiting at the door to come in singing to me, eating his favorite food cashews and green peppers, and taking bathes in my sink, sleeping on my shoulder! I hope anyone who hates these birds, to give them a second thought!

Drogon is still alive. We believe him to be male because of his wedge shaped tail and other body characteristics. but his eye color has never changed into that bright yellow. we think it must have something to do with him maturing in an indoor environment.
He still gets into the same old mischief and is still too smart for his own good

Yes, the iridescent black ones are the males while the females are dark brown. Very clever birds, they are. Feisty! The males' eyes remain yellow, by the way. I am a grackle watcher and lover as we have loads of great-tailed grackles in Phoenix.

mues187 I have a female grackle and she turned 1 last month, and her eyes have not changed either. They're still a dark brown color. Though she's a greater antillian grackle, she's still really similar to your little Drogon.
She's a mischievous little thing as well, I love her to bits.

I love that you are watching voyager in the background.. I watch it all the time..
Just found what looks to be a 3 week old grackle in the middle of a busy road. Normally I’d just stick it in a bush as the mother will continue to take care of it but it looks like he may have been hit by a car while practicing to fly. His femur was broken in two according to the vet who splinted and wrapped it. I’ve been feeding it wet dog food and scrambled egg with some egg shell mixed in. So far it’s a very veracious eater. The vet will be taking over it’s care once she’s off work and after it’s leg is healed she will find it a new family on her property. They will adopt orphans apparently.

While I'm generally against domestic raised birds (unless taken in by a licensed wild life rehabber), I must say, I'm glad you found these fellows and didn't let them die. Regarding the gender (I've seen you mention in some comments) this is definitely a male. Females will generally have a rusty breast or brownish hue. :) This little guy is absolutely gorgeous. I hope his life is/was a great one (not sure of the lifespans yet, so I'm not sure if he's still around, but looking at the age of other comments, he seemed to stick around for quite some time)!

He's a hybrid boat tail/ great tail, I have one with one yellow and one brown eye and one with two brown eyes still at 2 and a half years old, he didn't molt into his all black feathers until his second winter and has the big long tail just like a great tail.

Hi I figured that I had a grackle but this is confirmed it because he looks exactly like it and the only one I have seen without the yellow eyes that they always Show online. I've rescued him since he was a baby and he's been so quiet but sweet and now all the sudden he's really talkative and I thought he was in pain or something but is this how they just Express themselves. I've had him for a while now I'm surprised that it's just started

Any day now, we ought to be seeing the next generation of great tail youngsters leaving the nest. Watching and listening to them work out their adult vocabulary is one of the most fun parts about seeing them grow up. the next ones will be the 4th generation I've seen since I became interested in them around a year ago.

I rescued a grackle about2 months ago. I think it’s a female, but it still hasn’t got a full head of feathers yet. I’m not sure why. I’ve tried to show it to eat on its own, which it almost refuses to do. It will eat out of my hand, but still acts like a baby. I tried to not get too involved, but it almost died. I had to give it antibiotics at first. But It survived. It had been found in a dogs mouth as a hatchling. Had issues with its leg getting stuck over its own wing. It’s flying a bit now. I feed it, softened dog food, peanuts, sunflower seeds, raw shrimp, raw fish, raspberries and. Bits of various other things. Have tried wax worms, meal worms.....I think it’s getting good nutrition. But I have never raised a grackle before. Flying by the seat of my pants. She is hungry constantly it seems. I hope Im Doing right. I don’t see how I can ever let it go tho. It’s too dependent on me

I have a grackle fledgling now with wounded leg. About a month and a half I've had him/her. Such a loving buddy. Anyway, almost exact same scenario to yours as to how I found him. I'm hoping to find where his fracture is and make a splint. I've been reassessing all day.
