      Ford tech i was the one that called and bothered you last week regarding my camshaft caps they i was worried about regarding there wear and I would like to say thank you for putting my mind at ease with the wear I have. I have done quite a few of these engines but haven't in the past 10 years and your videos definitely make the process less of a headache and show the more thorough way of repairing these engines which i am about to go out and install my new camshaft and 24 lash adjusters and followers and chains with .y mellimg m360 pump and hopefully im praying this 189,000 mile motor fires to life without a hitch since i have spent 2400 on parts and tools which is the same amount I spent on the truck. Thank you

    This is exactly what happened to my 2005 project F-150. I did the timing kit, oem phasers, M340HV, 5w-30, etc, but I left the original VCT solenoids knowing I could replace them later if needed. Sure enough, 500 miles later and I was getting P0021 and a rough idle when randomly pulling into parking lots and the driveway. Thanks again, your videos and hard work is much appreciated.

      i have a 05 150 too. several years ago the motor acted like it was going to jump out of the truck. took it to the ford store and a few thousand dollars later it was fixed. just 2 or 3 years ago it did the same thing. took it to a friend and he replaced a vct solenoid. just last week it happened again. it had 13 codes. i changed the oil and put 2 new duralast vct valves in and all is well. thanks, to all the youtube, ford mechanics.

    Great video Brian. For me (a DIYer) the biggest tip you give is the oil flow from bank 2 to bank 1. That and the instructive display on your scan tool as to what abnormal and normal operation looks like. I have a 2008 Explorer Sport Trac 4.6L 3V, now at 165k miles. I've had no timing problems at all but your descriptive work is really helpful. Thanks.

    this was a valuable advisory for those of us doing a timing job. I have worried some about what may not go right and if any parts would not be up to snuff, on the job I have ahead of me. There have been a lot of you tube comments from channels featuring 3 valve timing issues that reveal not every job goes well and there are complexities of the parts and repair to be regarded with due caution. This video lays out everything was done right, just amounts to a premature component failure, even though it was the best part available. A guy has to keep in mind these possibilities and for sure use the highest level of parts quality available, which for this application is genuine ford factory replacement parts. Stuff happens!

    I have a quick question. I have a 2007 f150 the 5.4 l 3 valve. I just replaced the cam position sensors and she starts to chug at idle a little bit here and there. The question I have is that well-known tick that these engines have is on the right hand bank and upon startup it doesn't do it right away, it starts after it's ran for about 30 seconds. Could that be a lash adjuster?

  • @oby-1607
    @oby-1607 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My question is why did this happen? I believe you said the customer only got 10,000 miles out of a timing rebuild and then the VCT solenoid error codes. Was there defects in the windings or something in the oil contributing to this, or what? He should have gotten quite a bit further down the road before having to go into the engine again.

    • @austinhamann704
      @austinhamann704 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it has a broken exhaust stud, it has an exhaust leak. Once the engine warms up, it gets quieter as the metal expands
      Sometimes the manifolds will crack and warp which can cause the studs to snap. It's a pain, but upgrade to stainless steel nuts and bolts to avoid this in the future
      I only know this after replacing both manifolds on mine- it had 5 broken studs between both sides but didn't really leak bad enough to tick loudly because of rust

    Could you put air to the port in the cam to see the phaser operate like air checking a transmission? The first one I did I made the mistake of getting a kit from Napa which must have had aftermarket junk in it and it didn't last very long. I learned my lesson. If a customer doesn't want genuine Ford parts they have to provide them and I take no responsibility. What do you think about the phaser lockout deal? Thanks for the video.

    Question here. I know this might make me sound stupid. Just want to start off i have learned a significant amount about these engines (especially the phaser stuff) from you videos, they are very on point. My buddys truck I'm trying to help him with is throwing the p0011 and p0021 code (factory oem phaser, after market cheapo vct's, but brand new vct's). When I data log the truck the only time the phasers appear to be off is at partial throttle mainly only when you are just maitaining speed. They stay around 40 advanced when maintaining on adverror, and when it is doing that the duty cycle is at 100%. Short of him just buying new oem phasers and vct's I'm having a hard time decifering if this would more than likely be a phaser or vct issue. Thanks for any advice or which one you would lean more to being this issue.

    So i have a 05 5.4l 3v. It runs at idle horrible, almost dies at red lights. Had the codes ran and...p0174 p0012 p0021. Installed a new maf sensor also reset the codes. Then as i was driving it it acted like it was running out of gas. Put it in neutral and it would rev up just fine, put it back in gear and back to barely running. Had the codes ran with new maf sensor and p0172 p0012 and p2196.
    Needless to say i put the old maf sensor back in just so i can drive. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated as this is my only means of transportation. Thank you and God bless.

      Curious, if you were a customer and brought your 5.4 3v into a the dealership to have all of the timing serviced what are the things you take into consideration upon showing up? Who does the service adviser choose to complete the service? New guy who needs experience or someone more senior who pays close attention to detail? This is all assuming the dealership doesn’t talk you out of having the timing service performed and or tells you to just drive it and invest in a new engine when the time comes (which may not be bad advice given the gentlemen’s truck in this video). Genuinely curious as this is a situation where experience seems to be very key and there is little room for error. Genuinely curious, not taking shots at anyone in the profession but it seems the business model is designed to exploit rather than provide genuine service. All that training and experience you earned over the years...hopefully if you ever get back into that line of work it’s for someone whom manages a shop like Bryan. Transparency and integrity will make dealership far more money and i’m sure their techs would enjoy doing what they once loved. Again not trying to press buttons just curious given my personal experiences. Thank you

      We got a new service manager. Ripped people off. Because of her lack of understanding warranty work always got rejected so she retailed a lot of stuff. Charges 20$ for installing wipers....made the dealership a whack of money the first year, got her bonus but the next year suffered because of lack of returned customers. The techs got dragged into a meeting saying we need to find more things wrong because our numbers are hurting. If a customer wanted a timing job done on a 5.4 and they were keeping the vehicle. Assuming the chain didn’t eat the front cover and oil pump and if cam caps were not damaged I treated it like the 6.0 diesel.... a package deal...chain, phasers,sprockets, updated solenoids tensioners and offer the melling oil pump.

    I have a 2010 F250 super duty with a 5.4 3 valve with 50,000 miles. Yes 50,000 miles ! When I first take off the truck has great power. But if I am up to 45 and want to get on it to build up speed it seems like I don’t have the same power like when I first start off. What could be the possibility for that?

    I did a full timing job on a 2005 5.4 following all your steps and recommendations. Before start up zero oil pressure with the crank sensor unplugged. Decided to try to crank it and see if the oil pressure would read running and it did. Runs good at idle. Give it a slight load and it misses like crazy. Cheap obd2 gives p0012 p0021 p0201 p0174 p0351,3,6,7,&8. Does this sound like oil issues? I'm 99% sure I'm not a tooth off.

    My 5.4 f150 sputter on quick acceleration on the get up . If I slowly accelerate then it’ll pick up speed . While I’m driving if I flood the gas it’ll fall flat . If I want to accelerate I would have to slowly step on gas .

  • @tonyfoxxbuilds1920

    After I had the oil changed it started sputtering when it's warm and stopped. Rev it and it goes back to normal. Oil level is where it should be, Did a obd2 scan at autozone he just said it was the cam position sensor. I didn't know there was 2 and he didn't expand on anything. I'll have it back together tomorrow. I'm afraid I "fixed" the wrong side, or wrong thing in general.

    I have an 08 Ford F-150 that had a brand new transmission installed by Ford by the previous owner and my current engine has some of the regular 3V issues like the broken manifold studs, leaking valve cover but so far no valve issues. I am looking to buy a crate engine with the upgraded oil pump and some of the common issues fixed. Where would you source a 5.4 crate from or even a “refurbished” 5.4 with the oil pump replaced.

    Ive watched a lot of very helpfuI ford 5.4l videos you've posted. Thanks for all the work you put into them! I have a question regarding an issue with the timing chain. Mine is on a 2006 lincoln mark lt. The chain has no dark links and was hoping to not have to pull the front of the motor apart. I have the driver's side valve cover off and the links are stamped morse USA. There's nothing I see that can visible show me if the chain jumped a tooth. Thers no slack in the chain and the guides look good.

    Im an ASE master mechanic, Got a question, just bought a 2005 f150 w 5.4, no chk engine light however , i pulled the codes and have p0021 and p0011, checked with my scanner and both cams are not advancing just setting at 0, cleared the codes and the duty cycle goes to 100% both banks trying to move when accelerating, then ecu goes to open loop and stops trying, i changed both solenoids with oem ford ones no change.. all this and still no engine check light?! I would say someone installed vct delete but i hear the phaser noise when engine is warm, checked vct wiring
    Electrically good, jumpered vct's with 12v and phasers gets quieter but no other change in engine.. this has me stumped! Any help would be greatly appreciated before i have to tear into this thing.. thx
