In my opinion, Bill and Frank won the apocalypse... They were able to live 16 years together in a relatively normal way. They both experienced love and simplicity. They both went out together in a very romantic way. I cried the first time I watched this, and I've since watched like 10 reactors watch this episode and I cry every. damn. time. Nick Offerman deserves an Emmy for this performance. Seriously. Hes incredible!!!
I love the blocking in the sofa scene, Frank, the weak and sick man is higher up, better lit, and sitting prouder, wheras Bill the healthier man is lower and looking up, almost cowering, but it never feels like power over another it feels like love flowing down from someone who can give it to someone who needs it.
Right? It's nice that there are empathetic people out there, especially here on the internet where there are also lots of sociopaths and trolls too, and negative Andys. You know this episode is amazing when it's also the most polarising ep that they have so far.
I couldn't stop crying at the strawberry scene and the scene where Frank told Bill about his plan. Both of these scenes were so pure that you could literally feel the love they had for each other and their bond, seeing a gruff guy like Bill crying his eyes out on the couch made me ugly cry so hard. I'm glad they went together because Bill wouldn't have survived in a world which didn't have Frank in it.
it hits more deep when you know Bill don't have a knack in farming, when the first scene of him doing that resulting of a boogus looking carrot, thats why he's so gratefull for Frank intention
I think what i liked the most is the fact that they changed Bill story but kept the “toxicity” aspect in a way. They didn’t have a perfect relationship but in this show they manage to make it work and truly loved each other. 👀 unlike the game that Frank straight up hangs himself and Bill is left alone. Good changes
Know what really got me (in hindsight) when Frank told Bill about his final good day? The marriage. The world collapsed in 2003, the year before same-sex marriage became a thing in the US. They never married because, in the old world, they wouldn't have been able to. Frank essentially "invented" gay marriage in their little world, their home, just so they could do it before he passed.
Agreed. I was already crying at the strawberry scene, sobbing by their final dinner. But they really had a lovely life together. More than lots of people get honestly.
You can't overlook the huge amount of talent needed from the actors, the writers and the director to make you cry for characters you met less than an hour ago.
Every reactor is crying to this episode and so did I last night. Now I'm going through the pain again. Remember when Bill was singing Linda's Long Long Time and he stopped at "I think I'm gonna love you / For a long long time" before crying. These were the same lines the episode ended but Linda singing this time along with me crying.

Bill and Frank's story really touched me. In the real world, same sex marriage wouldn't be legal in Massachusetts until 2004. Here, the world fell apart in 2003, before any of that could happen for these two. Seeing as they met in middle-ish age in the mid-2000s, they were around to witness the AIDS crisis just a couple decades earlier, and likely lost friends during that period. Survival for people like them was never guaranteed in the "normal world", so for them to survive another epidemic, find love, and build a home in the ruins of a devastated community is a perfect example of "winning" the apocalypse.
Seeing reactors get emotional over Bill and Frank makes me so happy, not gonna lie. It's important to show stories like this; not only because we deserve to have our stories told, but because they can make people understand how beautiful true love is, regardless of gender!
MVP of the episode was Nick Offerman. Close runner up was Murray Bartlett. 3rd runner up was the song "On the Nature of Daylight" playing during Frank and Bill's last day together. The song is a must-have to display the beauty and tragedy of life.

Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett are both Emmy nominated and Bartlett won one. Offerman like many actors started in theater and can really do the drama roles. The story change was pushed by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann who also wrote the story for the game was open to it and it really fits into the narrative he wanted to tell in the game that this is a story about love between humans at the end of the world. Mazin even says this is a story about love between people at the most dire time in existence and how that love could save or doom humanity. All wrapped in a zombie type story. In the end the monsters are not the real monster, we are. This story is going to be about how we go out. It will follow the game narrative but make changes where it is important to play to the drama and not the on screen action.
I'm gay and this episode hurt me so much, but in a good way. I'm glad they managed to tell a love story about two men in such a harsh world. Even though I played the game and this deviates quite a lot from it, this escences was always there and they managed to captured it beautyfully.
Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live. In the game Frank ends up leaving to see the world because he's too extroverted, gets infected, and hangs himself before turning. So Bill is a lot more bitter about the one person he trusted leaving him. Either way Bill serves to show Joel the difference between surviving, and living. Bill is a survival expert, but what does he know about living until he opens up? In the game he shows Joel how bad he can become if he doesn't trust people or open up, in the show he shows Joel how good it can become and what he could've had with Tess. So either way Joel starts to open up. That's the major theme in the Last of Us. Surviving vs Living.
This whole episode was incredible. So heartbreaking, but also beautiful at the same time. They found love in a destroyed world and society. Bill knew how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live and enjoy life. I was a WRECK crying my a$$ off. ❤👏🏼
This was the episode that that broke me. Two middle aged men growing old, finding purpose again in a world so divided and ill-advised on tearing itself apart and actually being able to die in peace as everything crumbles around them. A tsunami of tears left me by then. Is it wrong that I cried at this and not at Sarah and Tess’ death despite how emotional both were?
The 80's song on the radio that came on at the end of the first episode is when they drank the wine and killed themselves. They died the same time that Joel,Tess and Ellie left the QZ. Joel said he left it running over the radio, he turned it off when they went into the bunker.
And now look up the lyrics to that episode I 80ies song on the radio (" *Never Let Me Down Again* " by Depeche Mode) and see if you can draw a connection between the lyrics and Bill & Frank's story... 😏
This episode of The Last Of Us for me was one of the best episodes of TV I have ever seen beautifully told much much better than the way it was told in the game. I consider it a Masterpiece
I binged all of Arcane this weekend for the first time and then immediately followed it up with one of the best episodes of a show I have ever seen. Only disappointment is I don’t know if I’ll ever have another weekend of TV this good again.
@@abysskek haven’t played a single second of LoL but absolutely loved arcane. Amazing story and animation. Almost every character is nuanced and well written. Fantastic portrayal of mental illness and trauma. All around 10/10.
We all knew Maddison would be bawling her eyes out, just too cute! Love you guys as always, the episode was amazing, hate I have to wait a week for the next one!!!!
This is exactly how game adaptations should be. take the character, and soul of the game, but change what you need to change due to the medium change. what works in an interactive game does not always translate to screen. Also, i dont want a 1 to 1 retelling of the game, the show should bring something new. This was beautiful, amazing TV. Awards should be won for everyone here, actors, sound, writers, sets....it was all 100% amazing.
Damn guys. I've been watching alot of reactions. My initial watch of ep 3 brought tears to my eyes of course. But when I saw your reaction drop I started crying before I'd even watched it coz I knew Maddisons ( sorry if I spelt that wrong) reaction was gonna set me off big time. In a good way I guess though. What a heavy episode hey. Love you guys. Much love from Perth West Oz.
One absolutely gut wrench that takes a time to realize... While Bill makes sure they both die, he only has the wine from the bottle. Frank has the bottle and the extra. Bill made sure Frank died first so he could take care of his last moments.
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to watch this show after watching the first episode but decided to continue. I was blown away by this episode. I am now hooked!
I love how the episode begins with Ellie asking if Bill and Frank are nice and Joel says "Well Frank is." But Joel is the most like Bill. Really emphasizes that Joel knows he isn't a good person.
But Bill was a good person. He was paranoid, sure, and given his letter he probably did take a sadistic joy whenever his traps worked against infected or non-infected. But he was a protector, he was sweet, and he loved with all of his heart. Joel says Bill isn't a good person because he never saw that side of Bill, and only saw the things he saw in himself. What that says is, Joel is indeed like Bill, he just has to learn to find the good in himself like Bill did.
I feel you guys so hard, I cried the entire time I was watching this thing. Like as soon as they ate those strawberries and he said "I was never afraid until you showed up" the tears didn't stop Haha
If there are no Emmy nominations for the acting and writing in this episode, something is clearly wrong. Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett were sensational. Kudos to the director, as well. Great reactions, guys. I knew this was going to tear you up. LOL.
As many times as I've rewatched this episode, it still amazes me to see how small Nick Offerman manages to make himself look when he kisses him. Just a split second, and he's so small and soft and OPEN TO LOVE. *Chef's Kiss
Aside from Bill and Frank's relationship, another favorite aspect of this episode is watching Joel slip back into "dad" mode without even realizing it or admitting it, whether it's trying to keep Ellie from seeing the mass grave or helping her with the seatbelt. Even his rules, while the first one is his emotionally wounded self trying to keep from being hurt, the latter two are meant to keep her safe. And then we get the end, a classic "Dad, you have such lame tastes in music", followed by, "Okay, I guess this is fine." And Joel even smiles.
how they make you fall in love with these people so soon is an amazing accomplishment i don't know how that's possible it tears your heart apart when something happens too them such amazing work they have done here .
To be fair, I only watch reaction videos of this episode from reactors that I do know will like and UNDERSTAND this one. I enjoyed both of your reactions. Madison really had me sobbing. Each time I watch a reactor's vid, I end up crying with them.
It's so nice to see someone react exactly like me when I first watched it. I was a blubbering mess. Also enjoyed your reaction because you weren't caught up in the game's narrative and expecting to see Ellie and Bill to interact, you just let it happen.
5:29 I gotta say as an American... September. Not our month Edit: 32:00 Best comedy movie ever. Stephen Spielberg turned to Jason Rietman the director of the 2021 film, they were all in a meeting for Sony and the group had started talking about some of the best scares in film history then Stephen turned to Jason and said "The library ghost... Top 3 scares of all time". I don't think I'll ever forget that story. It just goes to show that aside from Sfx History between the two directors there was massive respect for each. Also Ivan Rietman made Meatballs, Stripes, and more recently was a producer for Spiderman into the Spider-verse. There's a amazing quote from the brothers who directed it saying how much they loved the flow of dialogue and comedy it felt natural, like in an Ivan film. Along with a great story about Ivan sitting in the pre screenings of the movie
At the beginning of the episode when Joel is by the river he is stacking the rocks in whats known as a "cairn". These have been around since prehistoric times and are often built as memorials. In this case, he is doing it as a memorial to Tess
Thanks, Madison! Thanks, Christian! Episode 3 deserves *all* the awards. Love amidst chaos, there's no better tale to tell. 💎 #MACReact #TheLastOfUs #TLOU #TheLastOfUsHBO
Hi, you two! 0:57 - Joel is making what is called a cairn. It's a mound of rough stones built as a memorial or landmark, but it's often made to pay tribute to someone who is dead. In this case, you already know who he is doing it for.
your guys' reactions to every little thing are so pure and very relatable. i've seen so many other people react to this episode and you guys r my personal favorite lol. i can't wait to see you guys react to the rest of the show.
The first scene and the pyramid of stones. In the past, stone mounds, such as the one Joel made, were made to commemorate a deceased loved one. They were erected to honor their memory. Of course, such mounds were primarily placed on mountainous, dangerous trails, but in this case, Joel probably did it to commemorate Tess. The scene with the buried in the basement is also quite interesting. Those who know the game know that the issue of whether after being infected "inside" one is still a human was raised. From the reaction of the buried, who followed the blade of the knife with his eye, one can conclude that he knew what a knife was and how it could end for him. The scene with Bill and Frank kissing reminds me of the American military: "First the gunfire, then the questions"... in this case, first the kiss, then the question about the name :) Of course, it was a joke, but such stereotypes circulate. :) But I can personally say that I once had a similar adventure with a girl when I was young... I learned her name after :) So the situation is definitely possible :) And I still wonder, since Joel and Tess met Bill and Frank, why didn't they live with them in this fenced community? There is no logical explanation for this. After all, they could have everything together. Defend each other. Why didn't it happen? For those who are wondering, Frank probably suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which slowly progresses and is a fatal disease. Bill and Frank showed us something that doesn't even happen very often in a world that doesn't end. I'm leaving out male-male relationships, but I can understand it in such circumstances. We are a stand-up species that feels best in a herd, regardless of what that herd looks like. It was their herd, their time and their love. I understand it all the more because now, despite the fact that there is no such pandemic, I am as lonely as Bill was before he met Frank. To be happy, the proximity of another person is enough for us. When I watched this episode for the first time, I was disgusted. But as you can see, you have to mature to certain things/events. Now I think it is one of the best episodes of the entire show.... This episode shows us that even during the end of the world, you can have goals that are worth sticking to in order to survive. Great, great show...
the stones are for water level, peoples who live near rivers do this to measure the rising waters, and know if you can camp nearby or not. when the river rises, the water gradually covers the stones and we can see them disappear below the water level, it is a kind of measurer over time to know id the river level is stable and safe or not.
I love that it was there own choice to go out the way they did. In this series, a lot of people's lives get taken from them. It is so powerful in this dangerous world that they had a different choice. That people got to have a life and have love. It makes it more powerful to me. That the human side to all of us is never really gone. ❤️ Also go and watch/hear the podcast for this episode. It is amazing! I was hooked on what they were saying and the choices that were made. Amazing work❤️
I just want to comment and say I LOVE how extra and dramatic her reactions are specially. That’s the whole point of a good reaction. Love yall and will continue to watch 🥰
You think you can get yourself together after how they delivered every line at the end but the music and those edited silence hits you right in the deeper feelings...
Very good and emotional episode, the change from the game so far are very good and make sense because there cannot be as much action in the show as there was in the game. Somehow I feel like i'm the only one who manage to not tears up until the letter.
I didn’t cry like most people did only because l realized that Bill and Frank accomplished something so many people fail to: And that’s live their lives the way they dictated them. Granted this still happens during an apocalypse, but despite that they made the most of it and lived a very fulfilling life. I both admire and respect that - and it was a beautiful ending to an equally beautiful love story. Tragic, perhaps, but they went out together. 👏🏽
3:35 and that's exactly why you don't use just one stereo earbud. He literally did not hear it, because the audio came only on the right and he was wearing the left one. Game spoilers for this episode ahead: Frank in the game gets bit when he got the battery from the military truck that the three were looking for. He was stealing resources and preparing to get away from Bill and Joel and Ellie basically take the truck he prepared for himself. Frank left Bill a nasty farewell letter, basically saying how much he hated him. You could decide to give the letter to Bill or not. I think they show not just how to make a good video game adaptation, but also how you can deviate from the source material, and actually make it better. Bill had only a small role in the game. The only unfortunate thing we missed out on was the banter between Ellie and Bill and the magazine scene at the end, but I think this episodes writing, story telling, cinematography and acting was an absolute masterpiece.
Why do I watch the reactions? It make me cry all over again!!! But if you think about it, dying old on your own terms with the love of your life is pretty much the only happy ending we will get 😞
Spoilers: In the game Frank left because he couldn't stand Bill and his "rules" anymore, and he got bite while leaving, so he hung himself. The letter they found later was for Bill and it was basically Frank cussing him out an entire page...the game ended Bill and Frank with hate, but the show had them end with love, which I think was much better...since there's way more hate in other chapters of TLOU.
Most emotional episode to date. Hands down. Yes, the change to Bill and Frank in live-action isn't like the game. But, the change is a necessary one. I LOVED the performances of Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett in this episode. Truly heartbreaking and beautiful. Also liked the runtime here. Nearly 80 minutes of such sweet hopefulness. Also also, rest in peace to the original actress who played Tess in the original game. God rest her soul. I'm really digging this show. Such great stuff.
One of the most beautiful and tragic things is that Gay Marriage wasn't legal in their world. Massachusetts had just passed the right to marry act in late 2003, but it wouldn't be on the books until the following year. So as a follow up, yeah Bill was extremely in the closet, (one of the reasons he probably hated the world) so finding Frank was like a beautiful gift for him. This episode was just amazing
Can someone tell me why this show is so freaking good, and why it must make us cry with every episode? We should probably expect more tears with episode four, also your reaction was great. I love how emotional she gets.
When I finished this episode I thought to myself: If I cried, Madison is gonna BAWL. I haven't watched the reaction yet but I think from the thumbnail that I was right. 😂😭 This episode was so good.
The way Frank says he's going to stay for a few more days, if it's alright with Bill. The way, 16 years later, Frank says it's his last day. Man........
Nick Offerman was great but Murray Bartlett was incredible. In the scene where he explains what the day will be is so touching. This episode is a stand-alone gem.

Even on the apocalypse, Bill and Frank showed everybody that LOVE WINS.
Ron Swanson didn't have that inside him, but Duke Silver did.
One absolutely gut wrench that takes a time to realize... While Bill makes sure they both die, he only has the wine from the bottle. Frank has the bottle and the extra. Bill made sure Frank died first so he could take care of his last moments.
you can really feel the sheer joy they are experiencing biting into that strawberry
Hearing that letter from Bill and knowing what happens in the game really hits hard.
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to watch this show after watching the first episode but decided to continue. I was blown away by this episode. I am now hooked!
Get you hooked just to break our hearts in next few weeks haha. Can't wait
I love how the episode begins with Ellie asking if Bill and Frank are nice and Joel says "Well Frank is."
But Joel is the most like Bill.
Show Joel doesn't seem that bad. Game Joel was MUCH more closed off and fucked up
I feel you guys so hard, I cried the entire time I was watching this thing.
This episode was the best hour of TV I've ever seen.
You guys are a joy to watch. Definitely a nice find. I am subscribed now.
This was one of the most beautiful episodes of TV in a long while
Aside from Bill and Frank's relationship, another favorite aspect of this episode is watching Joel slip back into "dad" mode without even realizing it or admitting it, whether it's trying to keep Ellie from seeing the mass grave or helping her with the seatbelt. Even his rules, while the first one is his emotionally wounded self trying to keep from being hurt, the latter two are meant to keep her safe. And then we get the end, a classic "Dad, you have such lame tastes in music", followed by, "Okay, I guess this is fine." And Joel even smiles.
This is one of the best episodes of tv this year
Bill knew how to survive, Frank knew how to live
Madison already crying at the piano scene - I'm afraid to keep watching because surely she dies in this video lol Awesome episode.
how they make you fall in love with these people so soon is an amazing accomplishment i don't know how that's possible it tears your heart apart when something happens too them such amazing work they have done here .
September. Not our month
Edit: 32:00 Best comedy movie ever.
When I saw this was available I said to myself "omg poor Madison" 😭😭😭
The actor that played Frank was in season 1 of White Lotus, he was the hotel manager and such a great actor!
I learned her name after :) So the situation is definitely possible :)
And I still wonder, since Joel and Tess met Bill and Frank, why didn't they live with them in this fenced community?
For Bill & Frank 😭🥺❤️
Beautiful episode, been watching with my wife and her brother and we were all fucking wrecked. Don’t think I’ve actually cried that much since Up.
the stones are for water level, peoples who live near rivers do this to measure the rising waters, and know if you can camp nearby or not. when the river rises, the water gradually covers the stones and we can see them disappear below the water level, it is a kind of measurer over time to know id the river level is stable and safe or not.
Just realized that he dodged the cake on his birthday, the biscuits from the neighbors, the birthday pancakes. He dodged death four times
I love that it was there own choice to go out the way they did. In this series, a lot of people's lives get taken from them. It is so powerful in this dangerous world that they had a different choice. That people got to have a life and have love. It makes it more powerful to me. That the human side to all of us is never really gone. ❤️
Also go and watch/hear the podcast for this episode.
I swear, I've watched almost all of the reactions to this episode and hands down, this is my favorite. I love both of your energy so much ❤
I didn’t cry like most people did only because l realized that Bill and Frank accomplished something so many people fail to: And that’s live their lives the way they dictated them.
Granted this still happens during an apocalypse, but despite that they made the most of it and lived a very fulfilling life. I both admire and respect that - and it was a beautiful ending to an equally beautiful love story. Tragic, perhaps, but they went out together. 👏🏽
*Give you both hugs* I cried too 😢
Holy crap!!! Was that Christian getting teary😢 I think it’s the first time me seeing that!!!!
3:35 and that's exactly why you don't use just one stereo earbud. He literally did not hear it, because the audio came only on the right and he was wearing the left one.
Game spoilers for this episode ahead:
Frank in the game gets bit when he got the battery from the military truck that the three were looking for.
But if you think about it, dying old on your own terms with the love of your life is pretty much the only happy ending we will get 😞
OMG you guys had me in tears!!! Loved this reaction vid! This episode was a 10/10!
Spoilers:
In the game Frank left because he couldn't stand Bill and his "rules" anymore, and he got bite while leaving, so he hung himself. The letter they found later was for Bill and it was basically Frank cussing him out an entire page...the game ended Bill and Frank with hate, but the show had them end with love, which I think was much better...since there's way more hate in other chapters of TLOU.
I almost never cry watching stuff, but this shit got me dude.
Oh I didn't know she died, damn :(
Cause you guys watched the sandman, both of them went out with a kind word & a friendly face
Ellie saw a piano before, in the hotel where the frog was on the piano.
I was crying with you guys 😢😢😿 😭. This episode will be history!
Can someone tell me why this show is so freaking good, and why it must make us cry with every episode? We should probably expect more tears with episode four, also your reaction was great. I love how emotional she gets.
y’all are so genuine for this
Loved your reactions! The way I was SOBBING this entire episode 😭
New subscriber! You guys are amazing, thanks for the content!! 🥰 I loved this.
When I finished this episode I thought to myself: If I cried, Madison is gonna BAWL. I haven't watched the reaction yet but I think from the thumbnail that I was right. 😂😭 This episode was so good.
I sounded like a dying animal the way I was sobbing to this episode.
Seeing both of you crying was new to me. I had tears falls too. No worries. 😆
The way Frank says he's going to stay for a few more days, if it's alright with Bill. The way, 16 years later, Frank says it's his last day. Man........
Ive missed your reactions so much. Youre always so genuine. Thank you!
Nick Offerman was great but Murray Bartlett was incredible. In the scene where he explains what the day will be is so touching. This episode is a stand-alone gem.
one of the best ep of all time for me
i don't know I never cried that much
What a great episode! Definitely agree: all the changes from the game so far have been for the better!
Rewatching all my favorite reactions in the wake of Nick's Emmy win. You're still at the top and so is this episode.
Seeing nick Offerman cry like a baby just fuckin ruins me lol
That man is a national treasure and if he doesn't win an Emmy for that performance, we riot.
