Despite of all, Bill and Frank had a better life than any one could had. They had a few luxuorious things, like water, a house, protection and above all.. love!
Its funny how each character does offer something to Joel and Ellie relationship. Tess said "save who needs to be save" and Frank said "save who is worthy" and that is helping Joel seeing Ellie not as cargo and yet more as human person.

I agree. While it's incredibly tragic, they still got to go on their own, peaceful terms. Majority of people aren't afforded that kind of luxury during an apocalypse and likely just die of starvation, getting infected or torn apart

This is one of those strange things where everyone is crying by the end of the episode, but when you think about it, it's a story about two people that found love and meaning, and had an actual life together at the end of the world, then went out laughing on their own terms. By any measure, it should be a happy story, but it just hits so hard. And the letter mentioning Tess was a haymaker too. Really beautiful storytelling.

I lost my dog Dex to cancer. He was my best friend. For 11 years I put everything into taking care of him. When he was diagnosed I spent all my time with him and taking him to appointments etc…. When there was nothing left to do for him, I stayed with him 24/7 for the next several weeks. The day I knew he had to go was the hardest day of my life. 7/21/22. I still think about him every day and miss him more than I can describe.

It was 10/15/21 for me. I know that exact feeling, and it’s just so tough. I identify with Bill so much on having to make that decision on a loved one like that. It’s an impossible thing, but one that I felt like had to be made. Seeing my dog go through that was unfair to her and the best I could do, just like Bill and Frank, was give her the best last day I could. I’m sorry you went through the same and I hope you are in a better headspace now since then. It’s never easy.

Bill and Frank's story IS a happy one, with a happy ending (although I understand it's bittersweet). Everyone should have the opportunity to die with dignity, especially in this post-apocalyptic world where most people die a violent death. Bill and Frank had 20 happy and overall SAFE years together. They were old, and if they did not choose this way out, they would have most likely met a violent fate as well. It would have just gotten harder for them as they continued to age, and Frank's neurodegenerative condition worsened. They chose to go out on their terms, peacefully, and in each other's arms. It is probably the best outcome anyone could have had in this world.

As for what's different from the game (because this deviated the most so far):
Bill and Frank are both in the game, though Bill is the only one alive. Joel needs a car, so after Tess dies he goes to Bill because Bill owes him favors. Compared to this episode, Bill's closed off, grumpy, and there's some angry back and forth between him and Ellie (Ellie mocking his appearance mostly, because Bill's somewhat overweight).
In the game you go with Bill through the town, fighting off a lot of infected.
After a bunch of stealth sections you make it to a house, where Joel finds a body hanging. It's Frank, he's hung himself because he got bit a few times and didn't want to turn. Joel asks who he is since Bill clearly is upset, and Bill responds with "Frank... he was my partner"
Bill cuts the rope that holds Frank up and you get control again, and if you search the house you can find a note that Frank left Bill. In the note, Frank says how much he hated Bill because Bill never wanted to leave and see the world while Frank did. You can choose to give the note to Bill.
Basically in the game Bill is a warning to what Joel could become if he keeps his walls up, if he doesn't allow himself to love again.
In the show, Bill is a guidance for what Joel *should* become, to learn to love again and find happiness in the world.
Both stories basically are what will change Joel in a similar way, and both stories end up with Joel and Ellie taking Bill's truck to go to where Tommy's residing.

So far I think all the changes have made sense , especially considering it's a different format now.

    • @ChibiHoshiDragon
      @ChibiHoshiDragon ปีที่แล้ว

In the game, Joel CARES for Tess. She said there was enough between them to warrant his obligation to her memory
Game Bill is the *warning* of what Joel COULD become because, though Joel is heading down that path, he is NOT there yet. Game Joel is inbetween the old curmudgeon and a good likeable person.
Show Joel, however, doesn't feel for Tess. Tess says she never asked for him to feel like she felt.
Joel is ALREADY in a dark place. He already is the old curmudgeon
He doesn't need a *warning,* he needs to be shown what is possible even in this crappy world
(There is another point that proves this at the VERY end.
      SPOILERS:
      .
      .
      .
      .
In the game, Joel says you KEEP finding something to fight for. For him, Tess was one of those things to fight for. In the Show, Joel says you keep going until you find something to fight for. Meaning Tess wasn't something to fight for.

What's saddest is, the world ended in 2003 in this show
Gay marriage wasn't legal until 2004 in our world in some American states (and even later in other states) so they both never knew the world would've grown more acceptant of being gay over time
Another thing that made me tear up a second time was that when Frank's disease caused him to not be able to do things anymore to clean up around the house, Bill took over, despite not caring for it, because he cares for Frank (we see him watering the plants as Frank is painting)

About the fungus kissing from last ep, I suggest to listen to the director talking about it.
In short mc it is to show, the fungus treat their members with something almost like love. They didn't attack her but just trying to connect to her because they already think she is on of them. It is to show the fungus are not evil but only doing what they do to spread and survive.

I really appreciated this reaction from you guys. I'm LGBT myself (bi), but I think anyone, straight or not, can appreciate this story. These two people managed to find something together in the middle of the worst possible situation. They were there for each other, they loved and protected each other, they proved that love really can conquer even the hardest times and that people can live a good life no matter their situation as long as they have each other. I thought it was a really beautiful message, that you should always keep going no matter how hard life gets, because there are people who care about you. Next to none of this story was in the game - Bill and Frank's relationship was hinted at, but not really explored - and I think the show taking the time to develop it resulted in something really beautiful.

As I remember from the game, Tess had been bitten, but it was FEDRA that killed her?
In Pudgey's defense about when we met Tess. Episode 1 was almost 2 episodes in 1 time slot in a lot of ways. (duration, story arcs, timeline)
What Ellie found in the cellar, well... It's something of value to her, but not to him. Specifically a feminine product, of a hygienic nature.
Of course Joel remembers the date. The outbreak hit his birthday, and then within hours of first seeing infected, his daughter is killed by a soldier.
The truck didn't have a battery. That's why Joel dropped the hood. Then he found all the information and materials stored in the old refrigerator to make build a battery.

  • @Saphthings
    @Saphthings ปีที่แล้ว +3

The episode is about the main theme of The Last of Us. Surviving vs Living.
Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live.s
That argument in the street is where the game Bill and the show Bill's timeline diverge. In the game Bill says absolutely not, Frank starts resenting him because he’s an extrovert. Eventually Frank leaves, gets bitten, hangs himself to not turn. And leaves an angry letter to Bill, to which Bill swallows his tears and feelings and goes, “Well then fuck you too”. Bill will die bitter and angry having never lived at all.
In the show Bill compromised a bit, and let Frank love him how he wanted to love him. Let him make a friend, Tess and Joel. Spruce up the neighborhood. Frank in turn compromised and settled for just that. It’s still an apocalypse, he can’t invite too many people or do too much. So they both died satisfied, in each other’s arms, after a full life.
In either case their plot purpose is to teach Joel that surviving isn’t enough. In the game Bill shows Joel how bad and purposeless his life can be if he doesn’t open up. In the show Bill shows Joel how good it can be if he opens up.
Bill lets the "danger" song play so that Joel and Tess would come, and get all the weapons and things they needed to have a happy ending like he did. If you read the rest of the letter Bill tells Joel which wine to use in order for Joel to woo Tess and start doing more than just surviving. But it's too late for Tess. Joel reads the letter and realizes that Frank died happy. And Tess died never having that chance. He looks at the key in his hand, and he could part ways with Ellie, but now Tess told him to save who he could save. Bill told him to protect others are what they're for. And he decides to open up a bit, the first time since the time stuck on his broken watch.
Both Bill and Franks from the game and show are sides of the same coin. The bad ending. And the good ending.
Was rewatching the episode through reactions, in an endless sadistic ritual of breaking my heart yet again with the amazing episode, and there was one part that I always wondered a bit but was crying too hard to think it through.
    Bills suicide.
If Bill had told Frank what he planned on doing, Frank might've changed his mind only to keep Bill alive. He might've gone on with the pain and hopelessness because he wouldn't want Bill to kill himself too while he was healthy.
Bill went the whole day knowing what he was going to do. And his final gift to Frank was knowing he could probably stop the whole thing by even saying he wouldn't stay either. But he didn't want Frank to live when he didn't want to. Bill was so selfless that he let Frank take that final drink with no concern. And even after Bill didn't say anything. He probably would've gone to bed and Frank would never know. But when he saw the concern in Frank's eyes even then he tried letting him know he was satisfied.
The survivalist gave him his life. But I guess, in the end, his life _was_ Frank. And either way that night his life was ending.
    ----------
Bill, in his paranoid ways, would never sleep with a window open before.
That moment he left the window open would've been his final acceptance. For the first time in a long time all his fears, worries. All lifted off. He no longer had anything to be afraid of anymore.
Those final steps, from the window, to the bed where Frank was waiting for him, must've been the lightest steps Bill ever took his whole life.
And that moment his eyes closed for the last time, knowing his love was in his arms, and that nothing could ever hurt either of them again. It must've been the most peaceful rest he ever fell into.

If this episode wasn’t for you that’s fine but know that you’re the outlier. People who are watching the TV show for the TV shows sake are extremely satisfied with the episode. It seems from what’s been buzzing on the internet that a lot of gamers are the ones that have a problem with it. That may not be you but I find it sad people can’t compartmentalize movies, books, games or TV. I think people would enjoy these things more by going in with what, let’s face it, is a more realistic and open minded attitude. Art created in all it’s DIFFERENT FORMS is the norm, always has been. The expectation that everything be just as it was in the source material to the letter without changes is not only boring, it’s unrealistic and NEVER going to happen.😘

Good reaction as ever! Although I was a bit disappointed not to get to meet Bill with Ellie and Joel (which you do in the game), I think this was a great alternative and more interesting for developing Joel. Would definitely recommend the official Last of Us podcast which comes out after each TV episode, where Neil Drukmann and Craig Mazin the creators talk about their decision making, its short and insightful and doesn't have spoilers for what's ahead (and is hosted by the voice actor for Joel in the game!). Funnily enough it was his role in Game of Thrones that got Pedro Pascal into the big time, so it's timely for you to be watching that now too! Lastly if you guys do play the game for Pudgey afterwards, it would be cool to either stream it or do a clip of highlights and get both of your final thoughts comparing them.

    FUN FACTS:
Joel & Tess were together 13 years
    2010 - 2023
The role of Bill was initially to be played by Con O'Neill ( Viktor Bryukhanov - "Chernobyl / Izzy Hands - "Our Flag Means Death" ) but he had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict so Nick Offerman of "Parks and Recreation" won the role.

This episode had more to do with Joel's character than many realize. Even if you haven't seen him. Bill and Joel are both bitter and alone. However, the development of Bill clearly showed the differences, as one of them was willing to let a person into his life. As a result, despite the almost similar mindsets at the beginning, Bill got a long full and happy life. Joel, on the other hand, is stuck. So yes, the episode was important and not just because of the farewell letter at the end. It showed that there is hope, even if Joel doesn't have one yet.
This episode showed that people are important to be happy. We are usually herd animals.
The parallel to the infected is Frank here in this episode. The head is clear, but his multiple sclerosis or ALS (probably) has control over his body. The infected are at least partly aware of their actions, at least in the first stage. In the game, they even cry. They also cry while eating their friends.
And through this episode we also know that Tess and Joel have known each other for more than 13 years and that they were still "decent" people 7 years after the outbreak. Tess told Ellie that they weren't good people and just before her death she told Joel to do all the shit they did right.
Ellie has Frank's gun. During the attack, he pulled them out of the same drawer.
Joel is now wearing Frank's shirt. Both are now wearing the clothes from the game.

This is ESPECIALLY true because you hear Tess say "I never asked for anything, not for you to feel how I felt". So even Tess knew that while Joel was kind to her, he never allowed himself to love her the way she loved him

I LOVED this episode. Heartwarming and shows there's more to the event than infected and destruction. People were able to find love and live happily with someone and actually live instead of just "surviving" on your own. BTW, Ellie found tampons at Cumberland Farms. You'll see another familiar face from The Last of Us pop on Game of Thrones soon. Maybe not until season 6, but it's coming.

Just found your channel and so far I'm enjoying the reaction. LoU (part 1 & 2) are part of my top 5 games of all times. I know Spartan said he doesn't remember details but it's so bizarre how you don't even remember Bill 😂😂.
But if no one else has said it, the fungi being transferred from one person to the other via the mouth was actually a pretty big, but necessary, deviation from the game. In the game there was spores in the air, so I damp dark spaces they had to wear masks. The writers thought it would be difficult to translate that to live action so they changed it to fungi. But I don't think loyalists to the game were bothered by the change.

It's a sign of great writing and storytelling that they can develop and flesh out a character that you only get to know for 15-30 minutes (Sarah, Bill, Frank) and make you care about them so much that their death hits you that hard. If they can maintain that level of quality, this show is going to be absolutely epic!

Tess wasn't kissed by a clicker. Clickers are the third stage of infection, as seen on the roof in episode 1 and the museum in episode 2. The second stage are called "stalker". The box Ellie found were tampons I believe, but I don't know US brands at all. Frank had a neurodegenerative disease, likely ALS. He basically loses control over his muscles to the point where he can't even swallow food anymore or breath on his own. It's an agonizing way to go and he himself could not even open his pill bag on his own, so he obviously needs Bill's help. The pills aren't expired, they traded them from Joel and Tess. Remember episode 1 and Joel trading pills to the guard & gulping down some himself? And no, that's the gun from Frank that he got out of the same place during the raid.

If Sara had survived to now, she would be in her 30s and might be with a partner or still with Tess and Joel (with or without a partner). It's interesting to think about. If Frank and Bill had asked Tess and Joel to stay in the empty town with them. All the different paths.

A lot of people seem to share the opinion that Frank was being somehow selfish for wanting to end his life. But we don't really know HOW LONG Frank had been suffering. I would guess he TRIED to live with his neurological condition. But it was almost certainly painful -- and he could no longer enjoy painting or anything else that required fine motor-control. On the contrary -- I think Frank was probably holding off as long as he could FOR Bill's benefit. Because everyone talks a lot about what Bill brought to the table -- but no one talks about what Frank did for Bill. Bill didn't just save Frank. Frank also saved Bill -- from a life of loneliness and regret. I've seen it said like this: Bill taught Frank how to survive, but Frank taught Bill how to LIVE.

For me I enjoyed this episode and thought it was really well done.
I can’t wrap my head around how some people are trying to use the “what about the children?” argument against this episode. Like really a beautiful yet tragically happy romance between two people is just too far? Meanwhile there are naked corpses, skulls being punched in, children dying and burned, drugs, alcohol, smoking, violence, horror, monsters, etc…all of that perfectly fine viewing material for children but gay romance is a no no for these people.
I do understand the criticism that it did feel a bit awards baity …but for me it wasn’t the typical box checking gay representation forced story. It was really well written, directed, and acted.
Also I can understand this being strange to take a detour in the story to watch these two characters we know nothing about for those who aren’t familiar with the game. However I do still feel it is important and connected to the main characters in a really compelling way.
For one Joel just loss Tess his lover who has been with him through it all…so there is a connection with the aspect of how people deal with grief in this world. Then there is a the aspect of Bill being a crusty ol grump of a man but after he let his guard down and allowed himself to love again he found purpose in this world that feels like it is all doom and gloom…connects to Joel and Ellie or at least I’m guessing that is the growth we will see between them eventually and the Bill & Frank note will push that relationship growing forward.

That being said, this episode was very well written and didn’t feed into any stereotypes about gay people HBO kept it pretty classy and I appreciate that. The only gripe I have about it was they killed Bill off before he and Ellie got the chance to meet and talk shyt to eachother lol. The Tess scene was symbolism on so many levels. It was trying to convey to you the feeling of her getting infected by the fungus and they picked the best way of showing it. The infection literally walks up to her. She's trying to escape from it by death. Her desperately trying to light the fire which = death. She's even pushed against a wall and at the end it consumes her, entering her body through another infected's mouth. Look at everyone's reaction to that. That scene served it's purpose perfectly.
