Never actually played Lost World but it seems like most criticisms aren’t about the gameplay. People actually like the gameplay but most people talk about the bad writing and how it feels too much like Mario with things like the level design and run button.

2:36 _"I mean, why would the developers stop right there if the boost trilogy had worked so well, right?"_
Just want to make a quick note on this question as I've seen it frequently in regards to Lost World, usually with confusion or needless anger. But the reason they moved away from the boost is due to the fact they weren't sure how to push it anywhere or innovate on it. This was stated in an interview back in 2013 before Lost World's release and it goes as follows.
    Quote:
_"In Colours and Generations, both games blended the forward-view gameplay with the side-view gameplay, often in the same stage. It was solidified as a play style and really worked quite well. But if we carried on like this for the next 20 years we wouldn’t be providing a new experience to the users, and we wanted to carry on innovating and providing new experiences for players, so we wanted to really challenge ourselves to do something new and be innovative."_
_"With the forward-view in Generations, the only thing that we could really do was go forwards at a really fast pace and sidestep obstacles, and that was pretty much what that entailed. So we wanted to do something new with forward-view, to make sure we were innovating with that and to try to make it a much more interesting platform action game. That was our big challenge this time, so one of the solutions we came up with was the new kind of level design you’ve seen, which allows Sonic not just to sidestep but to do a lot more. There’s lots of different routes to take, and players can be quite creative with how they approach the levels."_
I think the big thing to note from this quote is this excerpt here:
*"With the forward-view in Generations, the only thing that we could really do was go forwards at a really fast pace and sidestep obstacles, and that was pretty much what that entailed."*
This implies they felt limited by the boost and what that kind of gameplay entailed. And considering the games that released after Lost World, I can see the sentiment. Forces doesn't really take the boost gameplay style anywhere. Frontiers feels like it should've been more focused on rolling as the boost there doesn't even feel like a traditional boost and more like a run/sprint button with a stamina wheel. And Shadow Generations while has a different flow from Sonic Generations, it still carries the usual boost hallmarks with a gimmick on top (Doom Powers).
I'm sincerely hoping that Frontiers' follow up has more of an emphasis on player expression while utilizing the environment and physics. Because that seems like it'd be a natural evolution for Sonic.

    • @snakey888
      @snakey888 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Ironic, they wanted to make something new, with one of the most derivative Sonic games there is.
Also, if a Frontiers follow up follows the design principles of Frontiers, it will be another very automated game with awkward physics and plenty of dash pads.

    • @tyguy6290
      @tyguy6290 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@snakey888 I disagree with the _"most derivative"_ sentiment since generally the game doesn't even play similarly to the one it's usually compared with.
But on the topic of a Frontiers follow up, I'd like to believe that based on Kishimoto's interactions on Twitter that they're evaluating what they've worked on recently. For years it seems as though Sonic Team generally refuses to drop the same principles that have plagued the series for 20 years, though something that surprised me recently is Dream Team. While Dream Team isn't developed by Sonic Team, it seems to show a willingness to move away from the usual design principles, at least from what I've heard from those that have played it since I'm unable to play it.

IIRC there was a comment on your community post that summarizes Lost World best, "Sonic Lost World is a good game, it's just not a good SONIC game." And I agree, to be honest, it isn't a bad game at all, far from it, but it definitely misses the attitude and the characters and the feel of a Sonic game. The slower pacing, the more elaborate moveset, the Mario Galaxy-inspired stages, the Mario-inspired zones, it all felt like it would fit right at home being Super Mario Galaxy 3, but as a Sonic game it just misses the mark completely.

I have tried multiple times to get into this game, but I just can't. One thing that this video doesn't mention is how Sonic feels to play. He feels extremely heavy, not just in how he runs, but especially jumps. He only seems to jump half the high as other games, like he's on lead weights. Then there is the camera, which is just too damn far away, making judging a lot of platforms significantly harder.
Also not mentioned, is that several levels in this game are ridiculously long! Some feel almost never-ending!
In spite of this, I do jump back into this game on occasion on the hope that, one day, it will finally click with me. But that day hasn't happened yet. I really would love a re-release on Switch. Or the sequel console.

Tropical Coast Zone 3 is still one of my all time favorite levels in the series - though 3-2 in Frontiers is now pretty high on my list, too. I wish more people gave it some credit. It may not be A-Tier, but it's most certainly worth a play.
Also, that stage with Tails in the hidden world is pretty neat, too. I remember finding it really interesting and a nice change-up.
This said, while I will gladly defend this game, anyone who dislikes Frozen Factory outside of zone 4 is totally entitled to that stance. I was not a fan of Zones 2 & 3 of that area.

Sonic gave up more than just the Werehog after Unleashed, for awhile he also lost that shoen style, focus on characterization and continuity in order to chase after the Mario fanbase and those who actively hated the franchise. (cough Egoraptor cough) Which is why both Tails and Sonic (yes I said Sonic) characters are off here. (Sonic is far more observant than what people give him credit for) This maybe be weird to say but you're wrong, I don't primarily come for just the gameplay. Its why I could never really get into Mario despite growing up with Nintendo but love Sonic and Kirby. Its not all bad, like you said Eggman is written pretty well here (I think most people forget is he's supposed to be like the Joker, threatening and goofy in equal measure, heck he tried carpet bombing Sonic once in Sonic 3) and I do like how Lost World brings back a lot of the badniks but it gets a D rank from me.

The bright and cheery but slightly dark tone and levels being unlocked by hidden collectibles are things that Kirby games do all the time, and the reason they execute it so well is because Kirby is a slow-paced, easy for (almost) everyone platformer, which Sonic games are kind of the opposite of.

Kinda weird for a reboot to just throw you into the nick of things without giving you time to learn who most of the 9 playable characters are. And again, no developer, producer, nor anyone else has ever stated it was a reboot. The only statement that comes close doesn’t actually say it was a reboot. While the fans call it Sonic 06, the game is just called "Sonic the Hedgehog". No subtitles, no numbers, just "Sonic the Hedgehog". Both Sonic and Eggman's designs were changed (Sonic's was less drastic, but still), and the game's art style as a whole was quite different from past games. You say the game is designed with you having prior knowledge of the previous games, but I'd honestly argue that Sonic 06 is one of the more standalone entries in the franchise. There's no Space Colony ARK, no Gerald Robotnik, no Master Emerald, no Angel Island, no Black Doom, etc. It's a pretty self contained story about Soleanna, which is perfect for a reboot meant to attract a wider audience of new fans and old fans who may not have kept up with the series.
Maybe we can agree that it'd be more appropriate to call Sonic 06 a "soft reboot" or a "requel". Personally, even if none of the developers outright said Sonic 06 was a reboot, I think if it looks like a reboot and sounds like it reboot, it's probably a reboot.

@@kirotalksyt Eh. Soft reboot? Maybe that’s more accurate but I still wouldn’t consider 06 as a reboot. Was it intended to define a new generation for Sonic? Yes. I agree with it being that and a gateway for new fans with a different direction without alienating old fans but it being self contained in Soleanna and having less direct past references shouldn’t make it be considered as a reboot. Sonic making a small nod to Windy Valley during Kingdom Valley, Rouge teasing Knuckles, the characters generally acting mostly the same as before and Shadow and Rouge being GUN agents as well as Shadow not falling for Mephiles’ lust is already enough for me to know that it’s not a reboot and is still following up from past games without heavily referring to them. I don’t think the designs being changed makes it a reboot either. I always felt like that was a more of a way of making the characters blend into the realism they were going for in 06. The same could be said for Unleashed too with its more cartoony approach but I wouldn’t consider that as a reboot either. I think it’s more to do with having a different direction which is a bit different to a full on reboot.

The idea of sonic being able to parkour around the levels sounds like a natural progression. Sonic has always been athletic and in the opening to Sonic CD the way Sonic takes the time to perch himself on top of a rock pillar to scope the view feels natural. Like his speed isn’t solely just his power but apart of his natural athleticism
If frontiers 2 exist then I feel like parkouring the natural environment can be a way to supplement floating platforms and floating grind rails.
    If knuckles can climb
    Tails can fly
    Amy can float up
    Shadow can teleport
Then sonic and stick can parkour
(Let’s get sticks into frontiers 2)

So upon release I wrote the game off as just a Mario Galaxy clone, and then used the bad-to-mid reviews to justify that negative perception of Sonic. But this year I played the game for the first time, and... I honestly really liked the game overall. It's THE definition of a mixed bag and the devs did such a bad job at explaining its mechanics. It IS different. It does feel like Mario in places. Difficulty is all over the place. There were many parts I hated and a few admittedly brilliant parts. Probably more good than bad. But you know what? I can't stop thinking about it lol. I included it in my honorable mentions for my favorite games played in 2024 video, because overall, I liked it so much more than expected. And the run button is also in Sonic Frontiers ... guess it wasn't THAT bad of an idea! And parkour is actually a very natural thing for Sonic imo. The Zelda level gives you an early glimpse into a semi-open world Sonic, too. It has great ideas, just not always with the best execution.
I liked it, though. I'm glad that you did overall too. It's just good in my head, but it's one of my favorites in my heart.

@@snakey888 Sure, but I think that on its own it's a smart idea. It allows for different gameplay possibilities & level designs. Again as I said in the initial comment, I think Lost World overall has great ideas, just not the best execution. I don't think the run button was actually the problem. The stop and start nature of his movement and immediate momentum cancellation in conjunction with turning was what made it feel jarring. Far less complain about the run button in Frontiers, and that's because the momentum is better in that game. An idea with potential, just not the best execution.

It's almost as bad in Frontiers as in Lost world, as the main issues carry over. Such as the speed being divided into tiers, as opposed to a more natural flow. Honestly, if anything, it limits the possibilities as it makes the design a binary element, you are either running or not, with little in between.

Actually trying to 100% the game and get all achievements. I 100% it on Wii U as a kid tho. I actually really like this game. While people can play a game however they want, I think the best experience you're gonna get is by playing it the way the developers wanted you to. Like going for points and S ranks for example in many Sonic games. I actually think this game should've had a ranking system because it actually has a pretty in depth points system, and it's a lot of fun to do it that way, by going for a lot of points. I genuinely think a ranking system would've encouraged so many more players to actually go and learn the intricacies of this game and it's mechanics. And in turn, they'd have a lot more fun with the game. While I don't think a game should need to tell the player "hey do this stuff for the fun to start", the reality is a majority of players won't do something unless the game tells you in some way "hey, this is a thing, you should go for it, we made it for a reason cause we think it's fun. And Lost World doesn't do this

I already did my time with Lost World and left a pretty harsh comment about this game in the community post, which I still agree with, I think this game REALLY sucks, but I want to focus on one more aspect of the gameplay. Just because Sonic has one of the widest move-sets across the series in Lost World, that doesn’t necessarily make this his most versatile appearance. You have a lot of options on paper, yes, but none of it flows, and a lot of it can feel pretty uncomfortable and sluggish. I think Johnny put it best in the recent SGB play-through of this game where he described Sonic as feeling very stop-and-start. Even though there’s comparatively far less options, I’d still say Adventure Sonic is by far the best feeling Sonic because, despite having a more limited move-set, those few moves that do exist all flow into each other far more naturally, not to mention that the level design facilitates fuller use of Sonic’s move-set there than it does in Lost World.
