Lyrics
(And I hope.. and I hope..)
I've practiced this for hours, gone round and round
And now I think that I've got it all down
And as I say it louder, I love how it sounds
'Cause I'm not taking the easy way out
Not wrappin' this in ribbons
Shouldn't have to give a reason why
It's no surprise. I won't be here tomorrow
I can't believe that I stayed 'til today
Yeah you and I will be a tough act to follow
But I know in time we'll find this was no surprise
It came out like a river, once I let it out
When I thought that I wouldn't know how
Held onto it forever, just pushing it down
It felt so good to let go of it now
Not wrapping this in ribbons
Shouldn't have to give a reason why
Daughtry's songs are simple.
But damn memorable.
Definitely simple, but damn memorable !
I think that they are actually quite complex. If you actually sit down and think about them. They have deeper meanings than you actually think.
It's weird because the reason Westlife covered 'What About Now' is because Simon made them listen to it and said something like "This is what you need to be doing".
Sim irmão...
that's life as a Christian - truth & honesty are God's ways; notice Daughtry doesn't cuss; What about now is my fav of his
“Our favourite place we used to go, the warm embrace that no one knows, the loving look that’s left your eyes..”
So much memories.
just saw a guy blasting this in his pickup at a stop light, windows down, singing at the top of his lungs.
the little things, man☺️🤍
I do the same😊
I play really Loud in my convertible to look rich and Famous
That was me lol

Still Rockin in 2024✌🤘
It's 2023, and I still love this song . At 70, I'm still ready to rock the night away! Doesn't get better than this. I miss my f a mile and friends that have past as well. Wish we could bring them back to spend time with. Love and light to all that are here and love to all those we have lost. ❤
Same Here
just saw ur comment all the way from the Philippines. Sending you happiness and the best of luck every day!
@Joshua Kim (JoshY) Yoshida thanks Joshua. I used to have a friend that I worked with from the Philippines. I hope that you are doing well and enjoying the great music. He used to call me Mahal. I think it was nice.
Sending peace from Spain... I love this song.
Oh, I feel exactly the same. What I wouldn't give to just spend 5 minutes with my Dad Basil Herbst. Miss him every day. It doesn't get any easier and time doesn't heal❤ deep wounds. We just have to learn to live with deep wounds and cover them up, for nobody to see...
I am 27, Back then I was just 13 years old. I still remember how I used to check VH1 again & again just to hear this song once in a day.
damn VH1… my most viewed channel
I'm 26 and same, the childhood memories 🥺 vh1 and natgeomusic 😍
Lol same, I’m now 28
This albums so criminally underrated 😢
Honestly, this song sounds perfect for people going through hard times.
Out of EVERYONE from American Idol, winner or not, Daughtry is my favorite. Everyone has their tastes and I'm more into his style and genre, but he displayed more soul and raw talent than most.
And through all this time, he hasn't lost his skill.
One of the main reasons Chris Daughtry has been so successful is because for years prior a lot of people had been starving for some no-nonsense, straightforward rock music.
The almost thirty million views of this video/song alone are a testament to the appeal and staying power for this genre of music ... wish the record companies would put more focus and energy into supporting it.
@@jamescox922 Rock and roll can never die, it's true you know
He's just great
Raw emotion always shines through when it comes to music
It’s no surprise that Daughtry is still making music today! No matter how underrated they are, I give this band a 10/10!
Daughtry isn't a band, it's one guy
@@jellybean64x2xx It is a band. Chris Daughtry started it, he’s the frontman.
I just get the feeling Chris is singing the song from the gut level. Very strong emotion.
Always takes me back to the early 2000s when things were simple.
This song is from 2009
your a pup
Always
@@amparocruz951 its still 2000s btw
@@mordy03 it’s not from the early 2000s tho, it’s from the late 2000s
[Verse 1]
I've practiced this for hours, gon' 'round and 'round
And now I think that I've got it all down
And as I say it louder, I love how it sounds
'Cause I'm not taking the easy way out
Not wrappin' this in ribbons
Shouldn't have to give a reason why
[Chorus]
It's no surprise I won't be here tomorrow
I can't believe that I stayed 'til today
Yeah, you and I will be a tough act to follow
But I know in time, we'll find this was no surprise
[Verse 2]
It came out like a river, once I let it out
When I thought that I wouldn't know how
Held onto it forever, just pushing it down
It felt so good to let go of it now
Not wrapping this in ribbons
Shouldn't have to give a reason why
[Chorus]
It's no surprise I won't be here tomorrow
I can't believe that I stayed 'til today
There's nothing here in this heart left to borrow
There's nothing here in this soul left to save
Don't be surprised when we hate this tomorrow
God knows we tried to find an easier way
Yeah, you and I will be a tough act to follow
But I know in time, we'll find this was no surprise
[Bridge]
Our favorite place we used to go
The warm embrace that no one knows
The lovin' look that's left your eyes
That's why this comes as no, as no surprise
[Verse 3]
If I could see the future and how this plays out
I bet it's better than where we are now
But after going through this
It's easier to see the reason why
[Chorus]
It's no surprise I won't be here tomorrow
I can't believe that I stayed 'til today
Yeah, you and I will be a tough act to follow
But I know in time, we'll find this was no surprise
[Outro]
Our favorite place we used to go
The warm embrace that no one knows
The loving look that's left your eyes
But I know in time, we'll find this was no surprise
Thanks, this beats the partial lyrics in the description! 👍
Love that ive had the music taste of a middle aged white man since i was 13 years old. still a bang up song.
Tbh....
I shouldn't have to give a reason why
It's no surprise that I'm still listening in 2024 🤟🖤
So many childhood memories listening to Daughtry especially waking up for school and seeing them on MTV early mornings 😭 take me back!!!
And Simon gave him a no at the audition, said he didn't seem like a leading solo artist.
Showed him, didn't ya?
Most people who judge others are 🍆s....
Guess who looks like an idiot now!?! He made it and he and can say kiss my ass to Simon
escaped a contract if you win
Because they were looking for pop-ish star materiial. But Chris has exceeded that.
Oh I know can't stand simon
I’m 27 now and it never fails to bring me back to the high school days where i’ll just have Daughtry looped on my ipod.
And damn, back then even music videos were filled were like meaningful life lessons unlike what we have these days with ass, guns cash and neon lights.
25 now. 2000s music gives me so much nostalgia and joy back from the days
I'm 28 and I'm still in love with this song.... what a classic 🔥🔥❤️
I very specifically remember seeing this on VH1's Top 20 series every Sunday. This was on there for a good while, and I always happy to hear this when I got ready for the day!
Back when vh1 was good 😭
I remember waking up every Sunday to watch that
IMC for me
I remember those days too, I really miss 2009 :(

Best country rock band.
So happy he didn't win America idol he was too good for them, but they did give him exposure which has been incredible. Chris Daughtry has a voice of an angel and his songs are beautiful
Yet alone he got no from simon
Musicismysoul94 i agree he really does
Because American Idol is a fixed bunch of bullshit... remember Bo Brice.... All of the record companies own AIAPI as well...
Jake LaGuna yeah they are that is why I dont watch
Trrrrruee!
2019 still bumping this 🤘🏽🖤
Me, this is an awesome song love it :)

We are in the middle of 2022 and I still love me some Daughtry!! His voice is right up there with Steve Perry in my all time favorite voices 💕
Ive been listening to daughtry for 17 years
It may sound silly but this song was playing on the radio the day I took my dog to the vet to be put to sleep. To this day it reminds me of him & the relationship I had with my best mate, a dog named Spud. I still shed a tear for him when I hear this. Thank you Daughtry, I'll never forget him or this song.
So sad......
☹️🥺
Reminds me of one of my best trips to Alaska. Came home by little buddy not seen right. Took to vet. And hour later phone call came full of cancer and died in my arms couple days later. Miss you Dawson.
That’s not silly at all. Last month I had to take my beloved cat Luke and have him put down too, and I cried for days. And played this a bunch of times. It reminds me of him now.

Their music is STILL a bop. Especially compared to music today.
Their music is like one of those old songs that never gets out of style.
Facts. Today's music PALES in comparison.

I listened to this song repeat for hours and hours every day. ‘There’s nothing here in this heart left to borrow….there’s nothing here in this soul left to say…’ my fave line. Brings back so many memories. Chris Daughtry has an incredible voice. So lucky to have seen him live. Now gonna have this on repeat for HOURS

Such a memorable song. Haven't heard this in ages and yet I remember how the chorus went.
Same for me. Heard it on a country top songs years ago and loved when it came on. Still one of my favorite songs.
2000's nostalgia!
love this song! Daughtry, i'll always love you guys!! God bless
“The warm embrace that no one knows, the loving look that’s left your eyes, but I know in time we’ll find this was no surprise”
I love that lyric so much. The pain of leaving someone behind because that loving look isn’t there anymore, but you’ll still miss them, their embrace. All of the good times you had together. And you’ll never let those memories go because you still care about them, even if it’s for the best that the relationship is over. Really love the whole last chorus, but those lines specifically. Chris could word love like not many others, and he was incredible at it. Still makes my eyes a little wet if I listen to it on the right day.
This song hits especially hard for me now. I recently had to break off a relationship, since the feelings just weren't there anymore.
@@traviscummings9178 I need to but idk how. after almost 3 years i cant

Not sure why but this video still makes me teary eyed 12 years later lol. Love Daughtry 💜
Songs like this one, will Stay in Our 90s kids Playlist Permamentaly.
It was the summer of my Junior year in High School when this song came out. I had a job at the mall and I closed all the time that summer. I worked at a Great American cookies and it was my job to roll the little kiosk across the mall to the main store, I passed the food court every time. They always played VH1 music videos in the food court and this song always came on around closing time, like clockwork. I would stop and watch this video and it made me think about how the future was going to be.
Thanks Daughtry, wish you were still putting out the hits in 2019!
I wish he would make more songs. I loved them a lot ever since I was a kid. My mom listens to them a lot when I was young and it kinda grew on me.
@@constantinevanderhall1882 how do you guys feel about their new song? Alive i think it's called
Same. I first listened to this song on Vh1 as well. It wasn't this same videoclip though, but an edited one with different info that would pop up every once in a while during the clip. The show was called "Pop Up Video". Ah, memories
I worked at forever 21..same...
Great memories, music is a powerful thing.
Back when music had a story to tell ❤ I miss this

A timeless great Song👏👏👏
his music makes me happy.
For some reason, this song sounds a whole lot better now than when I first listened to it back in the day. Either I'm getting older or they do get better over time.
i think its coz that we finally understand what the song means when we are older. ;)
LOL I agree. I'd always skip Daughtry when all his songs were on the radio in 07-09 but I gotta admit when this comes on the radio it sounds 100,000,000x better because it's not Drake or Demi Lovato.
Kevin Contreras hahaha you know what I felt the same! When this came out I never finished listening to it. I always compared it to his previous songs like Home, Over You & have thought those songs to be better & it's a shame that it took me eight years to realize how amazing this song was!
they just get better. they are even better in concert

"But I know in time we'll find this was no surprise" :)

Your band played in Omaha nebraska 14 years ago The civic auditorium. Your band stayed at the double tree. And if I'm not wrong Mr. Daughtry was sick. So I didn't get to meet him or the band. But I did meet their sound guy John He was carrying a boom, Mic and I gave him my number he called and that night was the best night of my life he changed my life that night and your music saved my life thank you fellas and I'm glad I went to the show at the Baxter Arena just a few months ago and yes I still listen to your music 14 years later Love always and forever teresa
