This was very very interesting, including the fact that you essentially made this from scratch, and showed all the steps. It really does give a new appreciation to all the things game devs have to do. This being done in 85 hours on Unreal Engine 5, I can't even begin to wonder how much time someone would have to spend in order to do this in a custom engine.
I love you actually made the game not cursed lol, I also got convinced when you made the power ups, I liked you added everything so it's nice to see a work well done
People really need to stop overusing or misusing the word "cursed". I'm so sick of seeing it used in terrible and unfitting contexts like this. Stupid kids today and their stupid brainrot terms.
I can think of two ways to incorporate the invisible block. either wither a glassy shimmer effect as you get close to it, or you could define a larger region that if you jump within that region the block would snap it's position to your head, that way you don't have to exhaust too much time searching for the block
Yooooo this is a legit master class 🙌 I'm impressed at your versatile skills in Blender, Substance Painter, Zbrush while still being able to code the game in C++ / UE. You're a one person 3D game dev team. I've seen some other Mario to 3D remakes in Unity and this looks so much nicer in Unreal. Not sure if it's thanks to your skill with UE or if it's the typical thing we hear about Unreal just looking better out of the box than Unity projects. Great job! 🎮🔥 Makes me want to do a project for my channel with Unreal -my current and last one are using Unity.
@@KitsuneFuzzy If you don’t mind me saying this, but if you were to redo the Mario remake thing, I say using JCThornton’s Mario model (and giving it brown hair separate from his black moustache and eyebrows), I would enjoy this. I have other things to mention, but I’m not sure you would agree on something.
lil' tip for future games or a update for this: you can slightly change shape and size of a part in harsh movement, like mario's hand would slightly get longer and bigger when he jumps and points his hand at the air. in fast movement, just make things wide toward the place it's moving.
There are two types of Mario recreation games: 1. aims for pixel perfect looks, using Voxels to approximate the look in 3D. 2. Is very artistic. There's very little in between these two
I wanted fixed states I could easily jump between however i like and not have a flowchart with tons of conditions that have to be met so that the animations would switch correctly.
I would assume the "shooter" part may have played a role in that case. I think there are more videos similar to this one still online than taken down. But only time will tell, and thanks for the good luck, I may need it. 😅
It was my original plan to do more like this. But with the legal risk, especially with action happy nintendo lawyers, and (currently) only 23k views on this video it is just not worth the effort. I started another long-time project on this channel. It is not a big franchise remake, but maybe you still like it.
Your end result is better than in most other devlogs, but it's boring and painful (to eyes) to watch so much timelapse. It feels like you recorded the whole thing and then was selecting/timelapsing through the whole footage start-to-finish (I did this a few times myself 😅). I'd recommend writing down a short list of things which seemed interesting (from memory, if you didn't remember something yourself, it's probably not that interesting after all), take corresponding footage and discard the rest (most of it).
No offense, great effort and I'm sure you'll only get better, but the results are very underwhelming, considering everything UE5 can do... Nevertheless, I congratulate you for your hard work and hope you will continue on this path. Much success!
I'm obviously no AAA Dev, and I don't think i even want to ever go there, those jobs seem to be pure mental torture. It's just a thing for fun and entertainment. I think it's fine how it came out for a 2 week project and I feel like if I added all sorts of random special bells and whistles it would stray too far from the source material - It is still based on a 36 year old 8 bit platformer after all and should be recognizable as that. If I spent more time it would've also been a higher risk if I were to receive a c&d letter from big N and not just weeks, but months would potentially go down the drain.
@@KitsuneFuzzy Thanks for clarifying all of that, it all makes a lot more sense now. Wish I had the time and creativity to do half of what you do, for real. Can't wait to see your future projects. Subscribed!

There are generally a lot of *game* remade in unreal engine videos out there that served as inspiration to try this myself. It was also a challenge for me personally to see how fast I could remake this game/level without resorting to stock or downloaded assets. That is what got me to do this project.
There is already an amazing Sonic in Unreal Engine project called: Sonic Infinity Engine The physics system is really complex for Sonic games, so I don't think I'll be making a Sonic game from scratch anytime soon.
I would really like a full 2.5D remake of the classic Mario games using the original art styles. This looks great!
Make it a 500 episode series

I wish you would have explained the targeting part where you set up the base animating for waking, running and jumping
10:22 based on screenshots from an early build of all stars (and the Giga leak) which also tried to maintain the art style of the old artwork yes

I would definitely buy this if nintendo made this kind of Mario game. The art style has a really cool charm about it.
This has gotta be the best looking classic game remake I've seen. Shame you can't release it.
