Now you need to recreate your recreation from memory and then recreate that. See how distorted the game becomes after several iterations.

I notice that the goombas you drew and the Mario colors actually resemble Super Mario World. So if you've played the SNES game, those memories could be interfering.
Or, if you mostly played the version of 'Super Mario Bros' included in 'Super Mario All-Stars' for the SNES with the revamped sprites.

9:04 At least your Mario has better colors. But that's only the fault of their limited technology, which was cutting edge at the time.
Their technology wasn't really "cutting edge." Super Mario Bros. came out in 1985, 2 years after the Famicom/NES released. The Master System came out around the same time and is much more impressive in my opinion.
@@nulcow You're right. What's true is that they tried to get the most out of limited consoles instead of limiting themselves. Just like AAA games now. Compared to 2D indie games, which could be played 20 years ago except maybe games with tens of thousands of blocks like Terraria.
@@NaudVanDalen The original gameboy could have had more colors - they explictly avoided that to stimulate designers.
Also games like Hollow Knight or Hades couldn't be made 20 years ago - You're thinking of *pixel art* indie games (and even then, hi-res pixel art can look *beautiful*

that's a fun challenge, also a great way to learn Unity for those who haven't yet. you were probably thinking of some of the characters/NPCs looks in later games, especially Mario himself.
Don't bother with Unity, go with Godot

Actually they made them in a text editor of sorts, drawing them out on paper and then coding them in.
Then we got ms paint, which has been used ever since, as recent as Mario Oddesy where you can clearly see the personality the pencil tool adds.

Yeah only ASCENDED LEGENDARY PLAYERS can do all levels
I feel like I could recreate all levels up to 1-4.
The first level of mario is like the perfect tutorial. First trying stuff out, having one little thread coming towards you so you HAVE TO act. Then you are introduced to powerups. Next you learn you can jump higher by pressing longer. Every jump is getting more difficult
That's how a lot of games were designed back day and how so many of us boomers rage about unskippable tutorial hand holding missions in modern games.

lol The koopa troopa was the funniest part. I figured everyone knew the shells face upwards at least. Overall a much better job than I could have done though. My memory is awful.
Yeah they need to face up so you can bounce on them.
They got redesigned to be bipedal and have little hands starting with Super Mario World and have been that way ever since, so I can't really blame him for forgetting that SMB and SMB3 had them look more like actual turtles.

I've remade SMB 1-1 so many times in Super Mario Maker 1 & 2 that I know it like the back of my hand.
Whenever I play an inacurrate version of this level in SMM, I always get triggered but seeing you creating the level in this video has to be the most triggering thing I've had to endure in my life!

nah man. nah. as someone who started programming in 2021 i don't think recreating sonic physics is easy. there's slopes and spinny things. mario bros has simple physics of walking in flat surface. physics are super simple with easy collision checks. to code in "slopes" you have to make like a million lines of code to make it work.
