I've painted one 3D printed figure, while I printed the "texture" on ordinary paper for three other 3D-printed figures. I didn't know about Waterslide Decal Paper, but that seems incredibly useful! I'll keep those in mind, if I ever plan another print like this! Nice work!
Fun fact: In SM64 most of Mario's colour is applied directly to the tries on the model. The only textures are the buttons, moustache, eyes, eyebrows, sideburns and the emblem. Everything else is vertex colouring.
Personally I would use the Mario Party DS’s models, as to me it fits just at the right spot of low poly models but still design accurate, not to mention me growing up with DS models. If I ever get around to making something like this, that’s what I’m going to do. Thanks!

if you print it with PLA, you could make an metal casting mold from it and make an aluminium Mario. After cleaning and polishing the statue, it's a real "Metal Mario"...
I'm wondering if there's a way to soften the harder edges of this miniature to make him look a bit more gouraud shaded in actual light without entirely getting rid of the low poly look
