      Because instead of sending out a message that all cultures are beautiful, The Proud Family is sending out a message of white guilt. Do something with my white privilege? Of course I'll help anyone I can with whatever I can do for them.
      But why should Zoe feel guilty in this situation? An attractive young man gave her attention and she was happy someone noticed her! Her "friends" don't! They automatically assumed Zoe knew she got a boyfriend because she was white!? When did Zoe ever give off a message she thought she was better than anyone else!? Never! She protested along with her friends, stood up for their rights and learned about oppression. She was always kind to them and the first chance they got they decide to use her "whiteness" against her and in the end she is the one to apologize!? Uh, nope!
      And that riot with the white police officer married to a black man with a black daughter and son - of witch he loves very much was supposed to stop a mob scene by himself with his "white privilege!?" Exactly how was one person of any color going to stop that!? Teaching children to think this way is bullshit!
      And yeah, the boyfriends had just as much right to be mad with the girls as Zoe did! They were going to forget people they claimed to love all because they wanted a hot guy!? How was that a lesson not learned! Trust your friends, believe them when they tell you things and don't ditch the love of your life because a hot guy was around! This is shameful trash!

    This thing in particular got on my nerves. It just made Penny and Dijonay look really terrible. • @KatOnline

    The episode would have been better if it went something like this. Noah asks Zoey out. Zoey's friends are initially happy for her. Zoey's friends slowly realized Noah is colorist by how he negatively treats them behind Zoey's back. They try to explain this to Zoey and Zoey feels they are just jealous and bad friends when really, they worry and care about her. Zoey avoids them and hangs out more with Noah. She starts to see Noah's true colors, realizes her friends told the truth and she messed up. She leaves him, goes back to her friends, apologizes for not believing them and they all forgive her and have a sweet group hug. I think this was the kind of message the producers were trying to convey but they executed it poorly. Instead, they made Noah seem like a normal chill dude with a romantic preference. Just because someone may find certain people more physically attractive in their opinion doesn't mean they treat or view people poorly and unfairly that they find less physically attractive. And they made Zoey's friends, appear as gold diggers, cheaters, jealous jerks, horrible fake friends, who should have apologized to Zoey first not vice versa.

      This would have been more realistic! Penny and dijonay have cute boyfriends and I think it's sad that they're willing to throw it away all for a celebrity! Penny even cheated on her boyfriend with that Native American kid. Dijonnaise finally had a guy that liked her mutually (it didn't start that way) sticky didn't even like her in that way but even she is willing to throw it all away for a celebrity. It's sad that they even made La Cienega and Zoey the single ones. But they weren't mad at her when she danced with Myron so that just tells me that if Zoey is dating someone who is better looking in their eyes than their boyfriends, then they will claim racism and dumped her out of their friends group... As a mixed woman, half Spanish and half white, that would have drove me crazy and I didn't last long even talking to a black woman blaming me for all the slavery when it happened a long time ago, how white people have it easier and blamed me for everything wrong with her life. She was a mean and spiteful person and I'm glad I never really talked to her again after that. People can experienced racism no matter what color they are and that was the first time I ever experienced that! Dijonay's bf is so attractive already and so is Penny's bf who is extremely tall and even he is very attractive basketball player which a lot of women would kill for! But yet they simped and act like everything is Forgiven as if nothing ever happened. Zoey doesn't really like Myron but she had to settle with him because no one else wanted to dance with her.... I know how it is to be with someone you are not attracted to at all and it's usually not a good match! I like the original Proud Family better because Penny actually had morals back then but now she's no longer like a bowl or understanding and Zoey somehow became more likeable and relatable. Zoey deserves love as well not just everyone else. La Cienega deserves a boyfriend as well even though I know she is still a very toxic person but maybe she'll have more respect then Penny and dijonay for their boyfriends! Actually, they should have given La Cienega hair as long as sunset's hair! If Penny's boyfriend was in the original proud family then she most likely probably would have treated her boyfriend a lot better!

    To anyone that says Penny and Dijonney were only interested in Noah because he's a celebrity, not because he's an attractive guy they want to date-by obsessing over Noah and spending the episode being angry that Noah was interested in Zoey (the unattractive white friend), the end result is the same. Their actions imply that their darker-skinned boyfriends are not important because this genetic jackpot guy is in the picture, and it's only when they know for certain that Noah isn't choosing them that Penny and Dijonney show interest in their boyfriends again. And as Tony points out, the boyfriends don't call the girls out on their behaviour or hold them accountable; they just loyally show up and the topic is dropped.
    If it really was just about him being a celebrity, the show had plenty of opportunity to specfiy this. It didn't.

    • @yanrokbowl28
      @yanrokbowl28 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      A lot of us know the end result is the same. Some of us just want people to stop misusing "love" or "like" as "wanting to date and/or copulate," and to not interpret conflicts between two people of the same gender as "romance rivalry" or "homophobia," or between two people of the opposite gender as "lovers' quarrel" or "sexism".
      The end result garnering the same negative reaction does not change the fact that the motivations and methods are not.
      People who only choose to pay attention to end results often either misunderstand (only when they are unaware) or mischaracterize (when they are aware and do not care) the situations or characters to the point of misleading fandoms.
      Criticizing someone requires getting closure. Insulting someone does not.

      @@yanrokbowl28 - Except the show left the intentions of Penny and Dijonney vague, which means people can interpret those intentions in different ways. When I say the end result is the same, I’m referring to the implication that the boyfriends are dropped so that the girls can focus on Noah, which has no negative consequences on their relationships because the boyfriends are barely allowed to be in the episode. The writers chose to make them background details when they should be important. Whether the girls are after him because he’s hot or because he’s a celebrity, they still want him to invite them to the dance.
      No one is mischaracterizing the characters by looking at the end result of them dropping their boyfriends in order to obsess over Noah and his choice to focus on Zoey.

    This episode really painted black women in a bad light. You would think the show would portray Black people, especially girls, in a good light, but it has really done the opposite (ex. colorism, queer men being "one of the girls").
    I don't like the stereotype that black women are obsessed/upset when black men date outside their race, especially white women. We all know that this episode wasn't about colorism, but rather jealously and black women acting like they are always the victim. But this episode *could* have been about colorism if the focus was on their boyfriends and how they compare to Noah. I would've dumped my girlfriend if she acted this way, especially in front of me.

    • @kaimobley5324

      I say it painted Black Women in a Bad Light in the Right Way. Hear Me Out.
      We always hear about how Black Men are the worst, the root of all problems in Society etc etc by Black Women. It's been going on like this since the 50's, almost 100 years worth and Black Men just had to take it bcus "how dare you speak on what Women say claiming it as Wrong". No matter what a Black Woman says/does it's always for good reasons and should be excused.
      Does that sound familiar? It's the exact same thing that happened in this episode. This episode highlights that same very Toxic thinking. Bcus let's be real if the roles were reversed we know for a fact the Episode would've been a lot different. In this episode putting bad light it actually sheds it on Black Womens behaviors. Showing Black Women are just as problematic and Toxic as Black Men and get a pass for things they themselves shouldn't get and also wouldn't give to the opposite party.
      I still think they heavily dropped the ball with this episode (amongst many others of the reboot) but it also subliminally exposes things as well.

      See, it wouldn't have been hard to fix this dumpster fire of an episode. Have Noah go out of his way to make derogatory statements about women of color or even compare them to WW by claiming them to be *insert negative stereotype*. That way Zoey could kind of be seen as the bad guy for not standing up for her friends, and the friends would have a reason to grow frustrated with her.
      In the beginning Zoey could be defensive towards the other girls because A.) She would believe them to be jealous, or could accuse her friends of either taking Noah's words out of context or trying to sabotage her relationship. or B.) She briefly overlooks what Noah has said, finding his words to be jokes, because she wants to continue living in a world in which someone popular or attractive has taken a genuine interest in her.
      That would be a much better conflict. After that the girls begin to drift apart. Zoey is happy in her relationship and at one point confesses to Noah just how much she misses her friends. He uses this as an opportunity to fire off a few more insults to which Zoey finally comes to understand that Noah just wants her because of her skin color and not because of who she is as a person to which she dumps him (maybe the confrontation could be in public so the other girls would witness the breakup). The friends chime in, blah blah blah they're friends again and thus the rest of the episode is carried out at the school dance.

Y’know, Penny is Tiana, Dijonay is Brandy’s Cinderella, Lacienega is Elena, and Zoe is Merida because she has red hair. On one hand I wonder why they didn’t have Zoe or Maya dress as one of the other Disney princesses. On the other hand, I could totally see Maya trash-talking the Disney princesses for being “bad role models.” Which is why it’s surprising that she never called out her brother for dressing as Pocahontas given how controversial that movie is.

    No one in the show has loyalty, it's always been a thing in the series. Even the adults, Trudy and Oscar would constantly openly express desire for other people. So would Felix and Sunset. All the kids just clout chase and treat each other like they're disposable if something better comes along. It's something I disliked about the series for the longest time and people have noticed this before the reboot. Having Penny and Dijonay completely disregard their own boyfriends also makes them mad at Zoey feel even more petty and hurts the message of the episode. Them being in a serious relationship wasn’t good enough for them. They had to be asked out by someone they didn’t even plan on going out with just to satisfy their bottomless egos. And it’s not like they actually liked Noah before, since he had only just arrived at the school.
    It kind of trivializes the whole colorism issue by making the girls also act extremely superficial without properly addressing their hypocrisy. They’re upset because a famous person they didn’t know asked someone else out instead of them, even though they would’ve had to say no to him anyway because they already had boyfriends. And since this episode did such a bad job of addressing the issue of colorism by not having any real proof of Noah only dating white girls until the end, they could’ve had a twist where Noah reveals that the reason he didn’t ask Penny and Dijonay out was because he saw they already had dates.

  • @CalliopePony

    Penny and Dijonay talk about how much they want to go out with the guy right in front of their boyfriends. And Kareem and Darius are visibly upset by it! Those boys deserve better girlfriends!
    Different topic, but the other thing that I never see people mention in the criticism of the episode is Michael's costume at the party. He says that he's dressing as (the Disney version of) Pocahontas in order to celebrate his Powhatan heritage. The Disney Pocahontas movies are notoriously inaccurate and considered by many to be disrespectful of the real person. If a real descendant of the Powhatan tribe wanted to celebrate her they would probably dress in authentic clothing and use her real name, but Disney needed to shill its own products and pretend that real Native people would see it as good representation. It's a minor thing compared to all the other problems present, but it struck me as a problem when I saw the episode.

It was like it was ok for them to dis their boyfriends like that and in the end they would still be with them without fuss. Makes me wonder if the tables were turn and the boyfriends were pinning after another girl, Penny and Dijonney would be furious and admonishing them. What makes it worse is apparently they got an apology from Zoey, like they were the ones wronged. In the end they didn't really learn anything.
    Also this episode makes me realize something about Zoey. When it comes to her supposed "friends". Apparently she isn't allowed to have a boyfriend or guy interest above her "level". This episode really does read like one of the writer's fantasies or something. Like 'Oh, I'm going try to get with this 'more attractive lightskinned celeb' while I'm *right in front of my boyfriend*, and then I'm going to get peeved when this celeb ends up going for someone else, and I'm going to especially get peeved when they go for my white friend. And everything will just go fine for me!' The whole time it was really reading like the other girls were the 'villains' of this episode, getting really catty with Zoey because of Noah liking her more, and trying to downplay Noah's interest because 'he's only interested in white girls.' And then at the end, where Zoey is the one that has to apologize first and Kareem and Darrius just brush off their girlfriends going crazy over a different guy...Bruh, I'm just shaking my head.
    I was waiting for some pushback to happen, some consequences for the girls acting this way, such as Zoey and Noah's relationship actually being pretty okay all things considered or the two boyfriends getting rightfully annoyed with their girlfriends actions. But no. It all gets treated as the girls were doing the right thing, that this was what they were *supposed* to be doing.

    Penny's and Dijonnaise boyfriends were definitely victims as well but because they were guys it was brushed to the side as if they should get over it and then they are so quick to take their girlfriends back when they come knocking back at their door! If I was them, I would have left Penny and dijonay because it is clear that even though they didn't physically cheat, they wouldn't have hesitated to cheat if the opportunity was given to them based on how they flirty and heavy that they came on Noah.... Yeah not girlfriend material and the fact that they Overlook the fact that they had a boyfriend to get a chance with celebrity just says volumes and I wouldn't even be surprised if they become gold diggers themselves.... Zoey deserves to be with someone who really loves her and cares about her and not just settle for Myron because he is the only boy that will pay attention to her..... Penny never acted like this in the original Proud Family and I think I'm starting to like the original proud family a lot better! Penny actually was nicer and had morals in the original Proud Family! Now she is not so likable. This new Proud family is trash except for the episode where they found out that BeBe has autism. This modernized version of The Proud Family is too woke and not every show needs to have a reboot and I wish this was one of them that they would have left alone! Instead, they could have made them grown up and also without Maya in it. Zoey probably didn't want Myron but had no other choice to be with him because nobody else wanted to be with her and so she settled with Myron.

    Honestly this is one of the few episodes I've seen where no matter who talks about it, the message doesn't land well.
    Colorism is largely an inter-community issue. Someone who is attracted to light skinned people won't automatically date someone who is white because *white* may not be their preference, *light skinned* (insert race) is because they are more than likely attracted to the racial features, but not certain skin tones.
    And Noah is such a background character we only get *told* by Maya who heard it from her friend whose a cousin or whatever so who knows if she's even being honest. The episode would have gone a lot better if we were able to actually *see* Noah treating Penny and her friends badly in favor of Zoey when Zoey isn't around instead of them pulling the whole "You're too unattractive for him" because they basically just called her ugly to her face. They weren't concerned for her well being, they were jealous the celeb didn't choose them.

    Even within the shows own logic it doesn't work. So Noah only asked Zoey out because she's white, but there are other white girls in the school. There's even a close up to one drooling over Noah who he walks past to get to Zoey.
    If Prouder and Louder wanted to tackle Colorism, there are better ways than basing it off o a single person's dating preference. Like maybe Penny and Dijonay accidently get caught up in some sort of trouble at school but Dijonay's the only one who gets punished due to being darker skin or something (admittedly in practice this wouldn't quite work since character-wise Dijonay's fake-friend-ass would have been the one at fault anyway).

  • @jenniferhanses
    @jenniferhanses หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    What I feel about it is that that friend group around Penny has almost always bee toxic. They hang together and they form their little friend group, but none of those people are ride or die for each other. The minute something more interesting pops up that they want more, they backstab each other and climb over each other to get to the prize.
    And it's really weird, actually.
    Look, there's this book called Odd Girl Out. It's about female bullying. And one of the things the author discovered when she was studying to write the book was that things play out differently in majority black schools versus majority white schools. If you go to a majority black school, the girls tend to be more open and honest and direct with each other. White girls stab you in the back and undermine you at every turn. Black girls say it to your face.
    So the way the friend group behaves seems more like a bunch of white popular girls than regular black friends in a majority black school.
    But maybe my view is skewed because I didn't go to a majority Black/Hispanic school, and have only read about it. So maybe I'm not understanding correctly.

    If anything, the episode is interesting because you have to remember: this is all created and written by a group of mature adults. It's the message they want to show youths that are growing up and likely reflects their views on society and relationships. If we look at the writer of the episode, Kylee Evans, she's a young black creative so the story is from her perspective. It's a flawed perspective but it's interesting seeing what she portrays, blindspots and all. It's more a testament to how little females empathize with the people they label as 'other', to include people of the out-group or males.

    This brings up a question I had after the episode was over. What was the point of even having Kareem and Darrius in the show to begin with? They barely appear as is, but on top of that, the show also had Penny fawn over that Native boy in the Season 1 Finale not long after she was mad Lacienega was Flirting with Kareem. After his debut, Darrius' only other appearance was this episode, where Dijonay was fawning over another man anyway. He and Kareem weren't even much of a factor in this episode, so why even have them date Penny/Dijonay at all when the show is just gonna have them hit on other men anyway?

    Why does no one bring up the fact that Penny pretty much flirted with a Indian boy in the first episode of season two when she clearly had a boyfriend? And why is Penny openly flirting with Noah when she clearly has a boyfriend and so does Dijonay? These two are not going to make good wives in the future if they keep lasting over different males. It’s already bad enough that they are so freaking shallow. OK it’s one thing for teenage girls to fall have over heels for celebrities, but it’s another to work with them.
    Penny and Dijonay does not deserve boyfriends if you ask me.

    One thing I can give with the Proud Family continuation is that it allowed Penny and Dijonay to have boyfriends although with the Light Skin Boy, I don't understand why Penny and Dijonay be swooning over him when they have boyfriends.
    I still think the idea of bringing colorism is a good thing in theory although the execution is just a bit one-sided since, in real life, Black-Americans tend to treat each other with some hostility when it comes to racial coupling as one side will get mad at the other being with men/women of different racial background yet some of these people would do the same thing.
    I think that's the thing with some of my grips with this show, it presents stuff that could be good to explore, especially within the Black community and its problems bc I know the community tends to be hypocritical at times yet it kind of lands itself flat.

    • @Lunella08
      @Lunella08 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      The problem is that they didn't really show Noah being colorist. They broke the "Show don't tell" rule in writing. We have the characters telling us he's a colorist but we're never shown it. We're just supposed to be against Noah because Maya's cousin's friend's neighbor heard from someone else he only likes white girls. That's not a reliable source. If the episode showed Noah saying some colorist things like "I don't like dark skins" or "Black women are ugly" it would make more sense. Especially if he said some of it to Zoe. Then we would know for SURE that Noah is a colorist and so the girls have good reason to be mad. And it would give the girls a valid reason to be mad at Zoe. If Zoe heard Noah talking down on black women/poc women and continued to date him it would convey that she is complicit. So then she would have something to apologize for. But with the way the episode was written, it just has the girls are be upset their ego's got bruised, use s Noah's alleged colorism to attack Zoe and make themselves feel better over being rejected for their "Ugly white friend", and Zoe is being made to apologize to her so called "friends" who mistreated her.

    • @vianjelos
      @vianjelos หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @Lunella08 The girls shouldn't have been interested in him either. Because that's a whole separate issue of women throwing themselves at or pining after men who don't want them or don't find them attractive. So they shouldn't have wanted him, they should have just been victims to his colorist speech/treatment(well probably Dijonay and Maya cause Penny is lightskinned and realistically would fall into most colorist preferences visually) then Zoe should have ignored them telling her how he treated them claiming they were jealous of her and trying to break them apart(not understanding that someone black can even be prejudice towards people of their own race) only for him to say some colorist shit in front of her thinking she'd be cool with it only for her to reject him and his ideology and for her to apologize to her friends for not believing them and not understanding that was a thing. That would preserve Zoes character in not making her complicent to colorism while also making a teachable momment about how it exist and affects people. Zoe as a white character can still learn something and be "wrong" without meaning to hurt anyone and without the narrative trying to convince the audience into thinking she was wrong when she didn't do anything wrong.

    Fun fact in the america's colorism was initially introduced as a move like blood quantum in the states. Instead of losing rights because of how much blood is in your system. Raza Cósmica is a philosophy where the native people of mexico and the americas and the spaniards could form a powerful celestial hybrid race.(Catholic priests always wildin) Of course they made the distinction that the lighter of skin the better the cosmic mix like people are tarnished and untarnished metals.
    Closer to the capitals the lighter mixes became more evident and as you go further out it gets way more complexionally diverse. Since it wasnt so systemic instead of zoos and reserves it developed into "im not black" or "im not mixed" in other countries in the central/southern americas where the ratio is clearly way more afro than spaniard because of the trafficking of African people during colonization blanket state wants in these regions are never welcomed when it comes to background but where people come off as embarrassing is when they reject a whole time period and people of their countries because a mental perception of illegitimacy

Thus no one else is attracted to him in any way, so it was fine. The so called message of this episode was just awful they were trying to make. Legit all the girls in this episode including Penny is just awful. Honestly Penny been getting on my nerves in the series being almost self entitled brat at times. She's no different than the awful friends she so willingly keep company.
    Not looking at this series anymore much less the next season as it's just awful. There's really a political message throughout this series as well as putting down dark skinned brothers along with showing how horrible these POC girls are. Makes me wonder if they did it on purpose, but doubtful. It's not like the satire and exaggeration the Boondocks does showing what's actually wrong in black culture as well as making fun of it.
