In the reboot, she outed the new kids by telling everyone they had 2 dads, easily got over Sticky and was immediately smitten with one of those new kids, and most recently hacked Penny’s phone and got a homeless teacher fired

If they don’t redeem her character (which I actually don’t want them to) they need Penny to get her out of the friend group. It could be a good lesson to kids or at least just teach her a lesson and make her character improve… SOMETHING

You would think the writers would have some common sense about her character. Why would the guy even like her when she outed his fathers? Seriously, you would think he would hate her for doing that and telling her what a piece of garbage she really is.

She had to take two toddlers to a museum of all places, and the parents were going to continue to leave her in charge of them when it became very obvious she cannot handle it anymore. It is not safe for her to babysit both children at the same time, especially in a public place. I’m hoping that part of realizing Bebe is autistic is them realizing he is not their daughter’s responsibility.
She also had to risk being late to school to change diapers.

As you get older you realize who your true friends are, and as far as Penny's circle is concerned the only real friends she had was Sticky and Michael who would rag on her like everyone else does, but they were never mean spirited, it was always in jest, and yeah friends do rag on eachother for fun. But her female peers are all trash.
Dijonay is disloyal and self serving, and a total stalker that we're supposed to laugh at, even though if it was the other way around, viewers would take offense to her lovesick antics.
Lacienega is stuckup, and antagonistic towards penny at every given opportunity. She has layers for sure, but it's clear she's that one financially well off friend that everyone gravitates towards for the wealth and nothing else.
Zoey is a sheep who flocks with the majority. She's a nice girl, but she's only as loyal as long as you're the winning side.
It paints a bleak picture of Penny's social life where she surrounds herself with people she has to call her friends because she doesn't have any better options, and IRL sometimes it really is like that for folks growing up, and eventually they mature and outgrow those people in their lives and find new ones.

She's equally bad in the reboot, if not worse. Currently up to the episode "raging bully" she's done things such as out a gay couple after being told not to by penny, sold out her teacher's bad living situation, and didn't even stick up for penny when she was kicked from the dance/singing group they formed in the original show. She's been nothing but a hinderance to the group, even saying its completely okay her siblings just stole bobby's car.

@@lifeboy3253 I’ll give Dijonay some credit though. At least in Louder and Prouder, she makes an honest effort to be a better friend, and on her own initiative. She didn’t hesitate to tell LaCienega to quit stealing Kareem from Penny. In another episode, she didnt like LaCienega giving Penny crap for her new voice, and she didn’t approve of Bobby kicking Penny (his own niece) out of the band. And in the episode with Al Roker, Dijonay refused to allow Penny to stay behind in her wish-induced college reality, and she sent Oscar the contract when Penny failed to leave before the trial period ended.

While I agree that Dijonay is the worst of the lot, she is by no means the only bad character. Penny's entire friend group is toxic. Also, I vastly disagree about the Proud Family being a show with consistently good characters. Just about every major character, except Oscar and Trudy, change based on what the episode needs at the time. Penny herself is a prime example, being an honor roll student whom her parents trust completely one episode, to being a party throwing delinquent the next.

"Adventures in Bebesitting" had probably the most toxic reasoning from Penny to validate their friendship. It's basically along the lines of "we're best friends because even though I can't trust you, I can trust the fact that you will always be untrustworthy." "It's so not right that I don't even know if I wrote it down properly. I love the show very much, but that's not a good message for anyone to take cues from.

Even as a kid watching the episode, the ending never felt right to me. I mean, there’s accepting that your friend isn’t perfect, but accepting that your friend is not someone you can trust and rely on, not only is that totally different, but it’s definitely NOT OK!
A better ending would have involved Dijonay missing the concert because Penny doesn’t go back for her. A week passes by before Penny talks to Dijonay again, and she tells her that’s she’s sick of her taking advantage of their friendship and lying to her. Penny warns Dijonay that if she pulls another stunt, then their friendship is over for real. This way, Dijonay not only would get consequences (missing the concert while everyone else had fun!), but she knows that her staying friends with Penny all depends on whether or not she works at being a better friend to her.

When Dijonay abandoned Penny with not only the twins, but all of her siblings, to go to a concert, that was the tipping point for me. The fact that Penny still took her back as her friend really surprised me. Nowadays that would’ve warranted Dijonay’s character to either be written off or pushed back to secondary bc people now know we don’t have to keep our friend circles big just for the sake of saying we have friends. As a generation, we cut off family, friends, partners, even jobs that don’t work out for us to make room for bigger and better things. Maybe Penny should consider that.

She's gonna do what she's gonna do no matter who she hurts, or how she makes Penny feel! I wanna at least see how they became friends in the first place! Like if once dijonay did something really cool or sincere or solid for Penny when they were younger, something that would justify the amount of patience penny gives her. But I can't remember a single episode that redeems her character. She's basically Ponyhead from Star vs the forces of evil! I remember that the dijonay centric episodes were the ones that made me so frustrated I had to change the channel, cause who wants to watch penny keep getting walked all over by a "friend" that treats her like a used napkin!?

It’s interesting/off putting that some shows in the 2000’s had the friends that make you wonder why the main characters hang out with them. Dijonay, Jake Spidermonkey from My Gym Partner’s a Monkey, Craig from Out of Jimmy’s Head, Gus from Robotboy, Patrick during SpongeBob’s seasonal rot. Maybe they saw Cartman from South Park be the same thing and thought they could do that too. As cool and as supportive a grandma she is to Penny, Suga Mama is a terrible mother to Oscar and Bobby (coddling him did not help much)! My guess as to why the rest of the family doesn’t call out Suga Mama for her mistreatment of Oscar is because they don’t want to deal with her when she’s mad.
Suga Mama reminds me of a character from King of the Hill. Cotton Hill was also a loving grandparent but an abusive parent to his son, Hank. Even as adults, Oscar and Hank both tried to gain their respective parent’s love and affection, but their parents constantly rejected them and refused to try and be better parents.

@@StarViewer68its a similar situation to Eustace from Courage the Cowardly Dog. Main reason he’s such a cranky guy in nearly episode is because of how he was treated by his entire family, especially the mom. I was very young in the early 2000s (when a lot of tween shows were already wrapping up production), but even when I was too young to actually get it, the very few times I saw it on tv, something felt VERY off - like a lot of the shows had the mean 'best friends' that the main protag hang out with for SOME reason and always getting screwed over by said 'besties', like I didn't get great vibes from it so I didn't grow up with it. Thank god too because I was easily impressionable and would had thought "guess that's how (girl) friendships worked, take all the trash they hurl at you and just deal with it!" Doesn't help that if you see today's shows and how they write their characters and the consequences they gotta face (e.g Amphibia, Gravity Falls, etc.), you kinda realise how the morals and character writing did NOT age well for shows like this 😅
Like yeah, lots of people will defend the show and say "yeah they're not meant to be flawless, it's a realistic outlook on friendship!", like in that case, I'd rather be friendless than deal with Penny's friends. Like I like flawed characters as much as the next guy, but they had all crossed the line of being unlikeable and "why should I care if they get hit by a truck?" Plus, if they want realism so badly, Penny would had eventually snapped and dumped them for good, people in real life have limits too.

One of which being "While humans ARE capable of compassion and kindness, it's generally localized to those they're close to or relate to." Meaning Myron is outside of any circle Penny, or the general main cast, really care about.
To be honest, this isn't uncommon. Much of the media is very conservative (not in a political way). Meaning it keeps to certain tropes and cliches so long as they bring in ratings. One of which is making fun of nerds. Nerd characters are either walking punching bags, unwilling lackies, or people who are just naturally the subject of abuse.
Like with anyone, Penny plays favorites with who's problems she cares about. This isn't a bad thing, but the show loves to make her out to be the righteous do-gooder. However, some of the issues of the show are her fault. Hell, if it weren't for Penny, Miss Hill would've not been fired and homeless. She promised two separate times to not tell a secret and both times told it and acted like she didn't. Spoiler when she got a homeless teacher fired she flat out acted like it was okay because it paid off her lunch bill and she has siblings. I do not think she will ever get better. We see over and over again she will happily leave Penny alone never having her back for even the most minor stuff, but then when things work for Penny she acts like she was there with her all along. I am not sure if the writers think they are showing 'the power of friendship bets everything' or if they are too lazy and having her be Penny's BFF makes the stories easier to work with. Really a lot of her friends are awful and I sometimes feel like Penny might be friends with them because she doesn't think she could make any that really like her. I am so glad Michael is in the main cast allowing Penny to have a real friend. He has been with her way more than the others.

Dijonay was one of the two reasons I could never get into "The Proud Family". The other reason was Suga Mama. I know, it is an established, popular character trope; but I always hated the "Mother that is hip and loved by all, except for her child (almost exclusively son) who she is almost exclusively mean to" character. It was the same with Mel's mother on the sitcom "Alice", Quark's mother on "Star Trek: Deepspace Nine", and so many other series. The mother is loved by all for being this quirky, rebel who inspires all those around her; except for her son (I'm sure there are daughter examples) who she treats like crap, except for maybe a few "You know, I love you" comments thrown in there. Even on "The Golden Girls", the relationship with Sophia and Dorothy constantly reminded us how much they love each other and will stand up for each other, no matter how much they may seem otherwise. This trope is especially bad in these cases where there is more than one child (usually another son), where they are not both treated the same, like this one. It always soured the pot for me.

    • @Polomance862
      @Polomance862 ปีที่แล้ว +8

At least in the Golden Girls, Sophia would stand up for Dorothy when she's unfairly treated, and shows they both do get along. Sophia also isn't known for being loved by everyone, as she's pretty crass to everybody she knows, and yet pulls through for them in unexpected ways. She redeems herself without detracting that she's this fierce old woman with a fist of iron and a heart of rusted gold.

Like Oscar has 3 kids, a wife, and lives in the suburbs; hell most people in the world would be proud of their child if they got to that point nowadays and Suga Mama acts like he’s in a $600 apartment with a singular air mattress. There's something to be said about all of Penny's friends being bad friends to some degree (even Penny herself) but Dijonay is hands down the worse of them. Lacienega was at least honest in her dislike of Penny and was never her friend, plus her family was one of the best parts of the show, but Dijonay is a bonafide backstabber.
Admittedly it does lead to funny moments and I wouldn't mind that type of character being in the main cast if the show didn't bend over backwards to justify her being in the clique throughout the series with the "friends stick together" spiel. Like give her development, get her to experience some form of consequence, or have an episode where she gets dropped by Penny permanently, something to Dijonay rather than "loud-mouthed two face".

Lacienega felt authentic that way too. I mean, the bully/queen bee dynamic isn't as cliquey as it is in most other cartoons. Teenagers in real life will hang out and do everything together, even if they really hate each other. Yeah, Penny's squad might be ready to turn on her at a moment's notice, but as harsh and unpleasant as it comes across to us viewers, it's not totally off-base.

@@emerald4866 People really don't take in her home life. Dijonay has multiple siblings that I assume she has to take care of. Hence why she chills and thinks about herself when she's around Penny. There's only so much empathy a person can give. People think black women are supposed to just take it. Dijonay prioritizing herself during friendships is good. Only ride and die for your blood family.

    Griffith: Hear that idiot..

Peter Pettigrew: What cute they are..

Considering how Penny is still friends with these people, even after such a time lapse in the series, it makes you wonder if Penny’s part of the problem. She knows how toxic these friends are yet *still* hangs with them. Does she just like being used and abused?

don't lie, if you are a black person or grew up around black people
you know at least one Dijonay Jones
I had friends who if you gave them £5 to pick up a pack of skittles
you wouldn't get your skittles or your change
you'll just see them the next week and they will and they will act like nothing ever happened
I remember this kid called Josh who was my "friend" I turned my back and he stole my Pokemon sapphire and Pokemon fire red
I snapped, it wasn't one of my proudest moments but I literally hunted down his friends and made them tell me where he lives
then showed up outside of his house with a few people, I don't know how we got in
but he was sitting there begging for us to leave him alone
he offered me all his game
but my rampage ended, I said "just give me my stuff back" I took my games and went home without hurting him or damaging anything
after that he became super fake nice

La Cienega and Zoie are better friends to Penny. Not by much... but don't ACTIVELY screw Penny/use her.
