  • Members of progressive rock band The Mars Volta, Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala sit down with Zane Lowe to discuss the inspiration behind their seventh studio album, ‘The Mars Volta'.
The Mars Volta discuss what progressive rock means to them and how they conveyed it on this album. Omar and Cedric discuss what it took to get back together after falling out in 2012 and how their emotional reunion shaped the new album. “Blacklight Shine” is the first song on the album and is accompanied by a short-film, the goal of this song and others is to make you dance and cry at the same time. The two also discuss their experience in 'At The Drive-In' and mental health.

all it is seriously, is being skinny. when you are overweight, which most older people are with their dad bods, that puts a serious toll on your organs and over time you start to look older. skinnier people just look younger. You can't be that skinny and also drink alcohol or eat bad food - so Omar just lives a very healthy life and it shows.

@@ErnestoMike It's not that he looks horrible, in my opinion, but that he is sitting next to Omar who looks like he stopped aging after 2005 or so. Cedric is a 48 year old man, and I find that's what he looks like. His beard has grayed and he has some sun damage on his cheeks and around his eyes. That's it, really.
Things also haven't been easy for Cedric and his family over the last 5 or so years. Stress has an immense toll on your body. If he does look horrible, which I don't think he does... it would be understandable.

Zane can lay it on a bit thick with the praise sometimes but I get it now. He nailed this interview, deepest I’ve heard these guys get. I maybe understand the approach, he has a short window on the deep dive, he just goes for it. Sink or swim. Should only be reserved for the best acts though. 🤩

For quoting purposes: "anything that takes the air out of a room and makes you feel like you're in the trailer of your own movie...that's proper pop music" -Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Apple Music Interview, 2022. A necessary citation to keep in our pockets.

Zane Lowe is a great interviewer. Everyone else is so surface level. Had a great time watching this. I have been a fan of Cedric and Omar since the ATDI days, through De Facto into TMV, Antemasque, Bosnian Rainbows, etc. Loving this new record, can't wait for the Philly show.

Lot of Jungian concepts being alluded to about their process. Fair play to Lowe for indexing the interview so well. Slowly realised if we were going to get consistent, crazy time signature awesome TMV releases then it'd kill more of those guys. Relieved to hear they've been able to settle down and start repairing. Hope to hear what's up if they want to relax more into Sunday morning vibes, still got those first albums to get back into anytime the wife goes out :D

That’s it right. We forget that they aren’t there to simply provide us with music to jam to. They are creating in different levels through their lives because they have something to express and they established an outlet for that. Therefore, if they are done with a certain phase or phrase, and to keep using it is going to damage them, who are we to demand more? This was a beautifully human conversation. Zane is so good at bringing it to the essence. Great guys, all.

This is so beautiful, i remember waking up, going to the washroom, entering TH-cam and reading "Mars Volta 11 min ago" and thinking " i died and went to heaven." I dreamed about that day for about ten years. Omar is beautiful and Cédric is too, they are artists and I'm very happy that Cédric remembered that and it's no surprise that Omar is so grounded and has grown so much and is so mindful and i just want to add that Bosnian rainbows is one of the best albums ever made, thank you so much! ♥️ Thank you both for being a part of my growth. You actually are an important part of my life, and the love of my life ♥️🐈 my two year old cat, is actually named after Cédric, so yeah, i love you guys i love all of your projects together, you might not even read this but, still, i love you, thank you!

I discovered them back in the Frances the Mute era, and since then they turned to be one of my fav bands. Well, all of their projects tbh.
Through all this journey I realized Mars Volta can take the form of any genre. I think that is the big picture Omar and Cedric had in mind when they created the band.
People is just attached to genres, but it's 2022 and that issue is over. Music is music, you enjoy it or you don't.
And this album is actually gold 🔥🔥🔥
