that's not even the chaotic part. that's just some arpeggios with open strings and a flanger effect. the real chaotic part, imo, is the variation that follows the octave guitar under the "Unknown origin, Is this the comfort of being afraid" (etc) vocals.
First time I heard One Armed Scissor it blew my mind. Hearing you dissect it and take it apart has also blown my mind. And filled my heart with a load of glee. Rick: you absolute diamond geezer.
I bought tickets to the Astoria gig immediately after seeing them on Later with Joolz Holland. Robbie Williams was leaning on a piano asking for his mate's chair back. He was completely dumb-struck. It was hilarious. I saw Rocket From The Crypt & Trail of Dead the night after. Absolutely bananas. TOD threw everything at the crowd, literally. I think there was only the mic stand left. I almost caught a Firebird.
Those out of tune guitars would have driven me mad if it was my own band but it just goes to show that it’s a lesson to us all not to get too delicate with the recording process. Feel will always outwin perfection. It’s pretty brave of them to have done it this way. 👍🏼
Only checked it out quickly, but it seemed like a lot of the ‘detune’ is coming from the quite heavy chorus/vibe fx. So counter intuitive isn’t it... but damn does it work!
What about that producer?! Pretty laid-back, just letting it flow! ‘Capturing the ghost’ as opposed to ‘huh… hey guys, your guitars are not in tune…’ If it’s supposed to sound wild maybe you shouldn’t tame it…
I thought so too but I remember reading years ago Omar especially was very unhappy with the mix. There is a board mix released but I've not heard it myself.
I love rick's videos so much because even though he knows very complex music theory and jazz he appreciates rock and roll, and he wont try to analyze rock music in a classical way because he knows what makes each genre great. Always remember your roots

Hi there, I've been a HUGE fan of your channel, LITERALLY since you started. But I feel compelled to give you a small bit of constructive criticism about your latest videos: ever since you started playing guitar, you seem to often try to work in some time talking about the level of difficulty the song or album your talking about is to play, which, all due respect; I feel detracts from your content. An example: Amputechture. TMV is my favorite rock band of ALL time & I have a special sentimental attachment of sorts to that record. So needless to say I had the biggest music nerd boner going into your video about it, I enjoyed sections of it, but I really felt the 2 or so minutes you spend talking about & attempting to play Vicarious Atonement derailed any momentum the essay had has prevented me from ever wanting to re-watch the vid... & I believe the reason is: for both musicians AND non-musicians alike, You need a Rick Beato level of knowledge & insight into theory &/or years, if not decades of experience in said field to point out something neither type of fan has noticed or thought about before. Something truly new I love what you do, you inspire me, PLEASE keep making content and music!

When you then listen as a whole each track is amazing and you appreciate the craftmanship behind it.
In college jazz class we learned to listen for the instrumentation first; that’s why Tom Morello’s imprint of ‘Guitars’ on their records was when digitech whammy and technology took over.
I loved this video, it also shows how when ATDI splitted, they distilled both parts of the formula on Sparta and The Mars Volta, TMV got all the psychedelic and spatial angst sound while Sparta got the punk intensity and thrust.
Hey, uncle Rick. Im watching this five years after upload, I also watched it when it came out. Great video as always. What struck me is how much this video looks and sounds like it came out last month. I mean, maybe there's a volume thing, but thats just me. Your consistency is actually insane and just goes to show your absolute knowledge of production in, pretty much, any capacity. You're the man, man. Merry Christmas 2024. Much love. And again, great video on a great song and great band.
Before I even watch. This song sticks with me because before a bunch of shows playing it he'd shout "you're beating eachother up?? You didn't learn that from your friend! You learned that from a TV." And I haven't stopped thinking about it, and how impactful that one idea was as the scene sped forward into 00s emo and pop-punk. Ty for this one.
Cedric lambasted the crowd for “moshing” or slam dancing or whatever you’d call it, while hanging upside down from the rafter of the venue. 2000 was a wild time.
Hey Rick, great contrast from your How Computers Ruined Rock Music video. Honestly, this is not my favorite genre, but I love the way you highlight the flow of energy between the musicians... it’s what I love most about music. So refreshing. You’re a one-of-kind, Rick. We are so fortunate to have access to your insights and knowledge... thank you.
I also loved this video, despite not loving the song. Rick compares the track at the end to Nirvana in terms of energy, and I also hear Pixies influences in the guitar parts and meter changes (naturally, given Cobain's influences). The reason Nirvana and the Pixies sell crap tons of records to this day is, of course, those catchy damn vocal melodies.
I’ve listened to this song so many times and somehow never realized how unconventional the structure is. It just flows so well. Thanks for the breakdown, Rick!
I’ve been listening to this song for over 20 years and never noticed before this video all the details, guitar tracks, tuning... AMAZING! Thank you Rick, I love your channel
The intro itself gave me goosebumps, haven't heard this one in a while! Listening every dissected part truly makes you appreciate even more what At the Drive did back then, thank you so much for this
OMG! I'm really surprised to see At the Drive In for this segment of a Beato video. My wife got me into those guys before this album came out. They had a HUGE underground following and she turned me onto them. Mars Volta was great as well but a much different beast. *I forgot to mention that SPARTA was a really cool off shoot from At the Drive In.
Moses Garner true that. i personally don't like mars volta. it makes me feel annoyed. I've listened to plenty of it, i don't think its bad, but it just doesn't jive with me.
@@anthonybernero9720 I understand, man. Mars Volta wasn't a sound for everyone. I dug them but my musical taste included a lot of weird off the wall stuff before their 1st album came out so it appealed to me. You used a good word there..."Annoyed" I can totally see some listeners being very annoyed by their vibe/sound. That makes total sense.
Well that explains Mars volta's prog rock sound... Cedric and Omar wanted to do more with at the drive in, and hence Mars volta.... and I love how you analyze every facet of the band members playing. I instantly fell in love with this channel.
Favorite part of this vid is how you give love to the drums and bass-they make ATDI groove like no other punk band. My hope is that you listened to the next track on the album (Sleepwalk Capsules). Paul plays a phenomenal syncopated bass line during the chorus that’s similar in vibe to what he plays during the bridge of this song.
I remember the first time I heard this song in high school around 2000 and being blown away how different yet brilliant it was. It’s aggressive and attacking but plaintive, and discordant and distorted but melodic all wrapped up in weird proggy time changes and all of it feels like it shouldn’t work and yet it all come together in a brilliant package
What a video! What a song!! This made me feel the same way I felt back then when the song was released. I had no idea that the song was recorded live, but it makes total sense, given its brutal and visceral drive. Amaaazing band!!!
My son, a musician himself, was on to ATDI in his teens. Later he introduced me to TMV and I as blown away. He didn’t tell me about ATDI until years later. I saw the re-union tour vid and as before I was blown away. Both bands have musical genius that is so unique, with controlled kaos and incredible song writing. It’s time to dissect a Mars Volta tune!
One of my favorite bands of all time - loved their music since they started making it. I'm a gigantic Mars Volta fan since they formed as well. Such visceral music!
The thing you keep mentioning about how raw and imperfect this song is, is why I like so many underground punk and indie bands that are basically bedroom recording everything. Just straight passion and love for the music. It's messy and the production sounds like it's from 10 years ago, but it gives it so much charm that nothing on any major label gives. The Brave Little Abacus captures this feeling so well.
There's a reason I keep coming back to this album and Cedric & Omar as a group. There's just so much RAW emotion and I love Cedrics take on singing he's just another instrument on stage, sometimes the words make sense, sometimes they are just there for the melody.
At the Drive-in along with The Mars Volta (Cedric and Omar are geniuses) are two of my favorite bands. Didn't know you had this one in your locker, Rick. Excellent choice!
So refreshing to hear bleeds and timing, tuning "issues", this is how music is!!! its not perfect or meant to be perfect. I get it that some music needs total perfection but this is awesome
Please do The Smiths - How soon is now. How exactly Marr's did the guitar effects and the production in general would be very interesting. BTW - awesome channel and content! Thanks.
I loved you take on On Armed Scissor. That song got me into this band and have listened to them regularly since. Had the pleasure to see them live as well. Great job breaking it down. Love your work.
Yes! The anthem to my college freshman year! Thanks, Rick. I always love the raw-yet-polished feel of "One Armed Scissor" (and also other At the Drive-In's songs) and you dissect it very beautifully here.
I bought this album when it came out. I've always loved it. Barely controlled chaos and energy. After all these years you come along and show me some little nuances that I didn't know about. Thanks Rick. That was amazing.
this is my favorite beato video, just because its one of my favorite songs ever (since 8th grade in 2002ish). thank you for doing this one!! seriously a masterpiece.
One of my all time favourite albums, thank you for doing this one.. So great to hear the individual tracks as the playing is so not normal on lots of Omars parts.
Our sense of “in-tune” is largely shaped by western equal temperament, which is a compromise system. Exploring the in between space between semi-tones is really the last unexplored space in harmony and melody. I am enjoying the blending of non-western tuning concepts into so called popular styles. Thanks for your fun breakdowns of these songs.
Things i noticed: The tracks themselves have bleed, but if you stack and mix them accordingly, they legit cancel out. Those detuned guitars I legit have never noticed (and i play this on full blast so gotdamn often) Cedric and Omar are mad geniuses. Thank you rick. I knew this song is good, but I never knew it was that good.
sitting here on my chair, it's almost 2 pm, went down into the rabbit hole that is this series. man what a ride. the sheer joy. so many memories of concerts and doing music with my pals. wew. thank you rick. this is bliss
Rick, every time your new video comes up I feel you chose a song from my collection of favorites. Thanks Rick. Your videos are educational and fun. More Pearl Jam please. Thanks.
Always such a shame. Looking at the full collections, I preferred Sparta's over Mars Volta. That being said though, Deloused is one of my favorite albums of all time, Volta had the higher high I guess but Sparta never put out anything bad.
I remember when this came out i just started playing bass in 2000 and between this song and helmet, weezer, i was learning them just trying to learn how to play the bass and figure out stuff... It's funny how certain songs will bring back forgotten memories
For intensity I don't think you can get more than Cosmonaut off the album. Just an absolute banger, fearsome and inspiring. If only they'd been able to keep the wheels on their bandwagon
George W Kush bro can’t remember well where the song was but i’m pretty sure was from the original playlist that comes by default. Notice that i’m talking about the Wii version😂
Wow, I was looking for a fastball and Rick throws a nasty curve. Totally didnt see At the Drive In coming, but great choice! Some Tragically Hip would be kick ass for a future vid.
When I hear music like this, I wonder if I'll ever be able to achieve such a thing. Truly amazing. Seriously though, check out Relationship of Command; one of my most favourite albums!
I love the fact that Rick is fascinated by different musical genres (as the true music lover that he is). Experiencing the joy that shines through his videos is truly beautiful, especially when he's air drumming to the tune! :) Wonderful episode, Rick. Thank you so much for the immense work, man!
What an album. My old band ot to open for these guy twice in Phoenix. Once right before this album came out for about 70 people. 9 months later for about 800 people. Both incredible shows.
@@DeanThomson if anything id think he would do ape Dos mil, definitely one of their most accessible and well known songs, their most experimental stuff is definitely on OCG and Coloring Book
Thanks for taking a look at this track! The whole album is amazing, an absolute masterpiece of early 00s post-hardcore. I'm not sure theres a single bad track on there, but this and Pattern Against User are definite highlights.
I swear half of what makes these videos so addictive is just how much Rick appreciates the art. His joy is palpable.

I remember when I was a teenager, this album appeared. It was so refreshing and bizarre ! Still good now.
It truly is one of the greatest.
Came out when I was in high school. Anyone who knew anything about music knew about this band. They had been making good music years prior to this.
The second I hear "We must've read a thousand faces!" I can't stop til the album is done. It's a bummer its so hard to find on vinyl.
This is the definition of playing raw, recording raw, but producing with a cool head. This is music in its pure state but well captured. I love it
Millennials were maybe the last to experience raw, but still very well produced music.

Really enjoying the range of material broken down here. I appreciate you, Rick.
OMG! I'm really surprised to see At the Drive In for this segment of a Beato video. My wife got me into those guys before this album came out. They had a HUGE underground following and she turned me onto them. Mars Volta was great as well but a much different beast. *I forgot to mention that SPARTA was a really cool off shoot from At the Drive In.
big fan of your wife
I'm just so happy that both ATD and TMV exist, and bless your wife!
@@increase9896 I am too lol I'll tell her she has a fan.
Didn’t even watch yet.m, but I’m so excited to see At the drive in. Please do a Mars Volta song Please!
Whenever I hear that song, I just can't help but yell "CUT AWAAAAAY, CUT AWAAAAAAAY"! I'm sure my neighbours are thrilled.
Can we please get some Dillinger next?!
Hahaha, I would love to hear 43% Burnt. It'd just be a lot of shrugging and saying I have no idea what the fuck is going on here.
@@gregmoore3345 I'd love love any DEP broken down. You could pick from any album and I'd be stoked.
Do some d4 and some naked raygun and I would be a very happy person
MONA LISA, or ONE OF US IS THE KILLER
@@babylonastronaut This comment was about Dillinger Escape Plan, but I would also be down with Dillinger Four.
What makes Rick Beato great :) Somebody should make a video about you Rick The Man
The thing you keep mentioning about how raw and imperfect this song is, is why I like so many underground punk and indie bands that are basically bedroom recording everything.
AWESOME! I love ATDI. This album came out my first year at university and it changed me how I think about music. It's raw and real.
"Relationship of Command" slays me to this day. Undeniable rock masterpiece.
So refreshing to hear bleeds and timing, tuning "issues", this is how music is!!! its not perfect or meant to be perfect. I get it that some music needs total perfection but this is awesome
One of my favorite albums. Enfilade is my favorite track. So much drive.
Buddy Rick, on air drums, gotta love it !! Great post my man .
I would also love to see an episode of WMTSG about Change (In The House of Flies) by Deftones.
big fan
Yes! That would be awesome!
IMHO Digital Bath, Knife Party or Passenger would be better picks off that album
Passenger even
Anything from White Pony would be great
Please do The Smiths - How soon is now. How exactly Marr's did the guitar effects and the production in general would be very interesting. BTW - awesome channel and content! Thanks.
Seconded.
Fourthed lol
I loved you take on On Armed Scissor. That song got me into this band and have listened to them regularly since. Had the pleasure to see them live as well. Great job breaking it down. Love your work.
Yes! The anthem to my college freshman year! Thanks, Rick. I always love the raw-yet-polished feel of "One Armed Scissor" (and also other At the Drive-In's songs) and you dissect it very beautifully here.
I loved this episode. One of my favorites. I now want you to do one on Fugazi.
Rick, you're an inspiration. We need more Rick's in this world, keep on doing this, my faith in music is coming back. We need you!
One of my all time favourite albums, thank you for doing this one.. So great to hear the individual tracks as the playing is so not normal on lots of Omars parts.
More than excellent. One of my favourite songs.
Key words: visceral and progressive-Nirvana.
Thanks, Rick. Best regards from Spain.
Creo que fueron los últimos Nirvana. Desde ahí el rock de guitarras crudas murió
Things i noticed:
The tracks themselves have bleed, but if you stack and mix them accordingly, they legit cancel out.
Those detuned guitars I legit have never noticed (and i play this on full blast so gotdamn often)
Cedric and Omar are mad geniuses.
Thank you rick. I knew this song is good, but I never knew it was that good.
One of the best rock albums of all time easily. Thank you so much for making this video
sitting here on my chair, it's almost 2 pm, went down into the rabbit hole that is this series. man what a ride. the sheer joy. so many memories of concerts and doing music with my pals. wew. thank you rick. this is bliss
"this is just all vibe" the best
Rick, every time your new video comes up I feel you chose a song from my collection of favorites.
Thanks Rick. Your videos are educational and fun. More Pearl Jam please. Thanks.
You never know what you're going to get with this series but you know it's going to be good!
I'm class of 2001 and this album was massive for my friends in The Bay Area California. Mars volta as well, but RELATIONSHIP OF COMMAND WAS SO GOOD
What makes that song so amazing is it sounds like a live performance
I ordered this cd. Can't wait to hear more of these guys.
Relationship of command is such an amazing record
as always, jim ward goes underappreciated
Always such a shame. Looking at the full collections, I preferred Sparta's over Mars Volta. That being said though, Deloused is one of my favorite albums of all time, Volta had the higher high I guess but Sparta never put out anything bad.
@@timvotta1111Deloused is their only good record, to me. Wiretap Scars trumps their entire catalog. Just saying.
He was definitely an important part of atdi.
Gotta say ATDI is way better than everything they did separately combined
I agree. Always liked Sparta more than Mars Volta when they split. These guys all make great music though.
I remember when this came out i just started playing bass in 2000 and between this song and helmet, weezer, i was learning them just trying to learn how to play the bass and figure out stuff...
It's funny how certain songs will bring back forgotten memories
I actually really love how you break these things down and analyze and explain quite a lot when it comes to songs.
For intensity I don't think you can get more than Cosmonaut off the album. Just an absolute banger, fearsome and inspiring. If only they'd been able to keep the wheels on their bandwagon
Badass track for sure
Rick, I'd really love to see one of these in depth analysis of Mars Volta mixes! They're such weird mixes!!!
I see a respected musician/engineer talk about At the drive in/the Mars volta, I immediately subscribe
The drums and bass isolated sounds so cool. Just rolling along
All these years. And, it still one of my favorite songs and albums ever
Haha yeah!!!
Remember playing this on Guitar Hero World tour🤘🏻
Rick please make a video about deftones or Interpol!!
Both great bands!!
Fuck yeah!
Deftones - Be Quiet And Drive or Change
Interpol - Obstacle 1 or Narc
Was this a bonus track/DLC or the main set list? I can't believe I don't remember this from the game
Wonderful episode, Rick. Thank you so much for the immense work, man!
What an album. My old band ot to open for these guy twice in Phoenix. Once right before this album came out for about 70 people. 9 months later for about 800 people. Both incredible shows.
Glassjaw .. you MUST do Glassjaw ^^
1 2 Siberian Kiss seems obvious.
@1 2 I'd say do a more prominent song in their catalogue and quite the unique one. Tip Your Bartender.
@1 2 Haha. Yeah
1000000000% agree!!!
@@DeanThomson if anything id think he would do ape Dos mil, definitely one of their most accessible and well known songs, their most experimental stuff is definitely on OCG and Coloring Book
A whole lot of Cedric's songs end up in triple meters. I always assumed that was down to the huge Latin jazz influence
“Get away” is Ward, not Cedric, great vid!
Isn't the line "Cut away"? They are singing about scissors.
jspanos500 lol, great correction. I’ve heard “get away” for 19 years and you had to change my ear’s whole game.
Slenderchunk It took me many many years before I realised it was “cut” (and get) and I still always have to correct myself if I’m singing along
@@Jim_Thomas_Draper Same.
it's "cut away"
Thanks for taking a look at this track! The whole album is amazing, an absolute masterpiece of early 00s post-hardcore. I'm not sure theres a single bad track on there, but this and Pattern Against User are definite highlights.
