    Great video! I notice nearly everyone using spinning rods now vs conventional. Times have changed on fluking gear it seems. Also, you seem to set the hook right away vs the “give em some line” technique while they chew on it. Hook up ratio seemed just as good though.

      Thank you! There’s def some technique when hook setting Fluke. I usually lift the rod slightly to see if i feel some weight then set verse just setting on any little tap. I def feed them line if im feeling little taps. I cut down these videos alot so your really just seeing the end of the bites. Gear has definitely changed over the years. If im using 2 to 3 ounces i love using spinning gear.

      I was using a 2oz bucktail in the morning 3oz at the end of the day when the drift picked up a little. 30lb leader

      @@The_Bearded_Fisherman ive gone fluking on party boats but im a complete newbie to it. Im not really sure what is going on in the water. Why do I have to keep feeding more line? Is my sinker drifting, or is the boat moving?

    • @alejandro3485
      @alejandro3485 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kylebengthe boat is moving/drifting. If the sinker or bucktail you’re using isn’t heavy enough you’re doing what is called scoping out which requires you to let out more line to stay on the bottom. This tells you you need to use a heavier sinker or bucktail. The way to combat this with a light bucktail is to cast out if your on the side of the boat drifting into the current (line going under the boat) and working it back(jigging)with the rod and reel. Or if you’re using a sinker and bait rig straight down you have to use a heavier weight. The key is to stay in contact with the bottom and jig whatever you’re using. Either gulp or bait you need to jig it. Fluke bite more aggressive when you’re jigging the bait. Sometimes the drift is so fast it’s almost impossible to use bucktails effectively. A 6-10 oz sinker is sometimes required. I used to bring two rods. One spinning rod with a bucktail setup. One conventional with a heavy sinker setup. The captain usually switches up sides of the boat for each drift so one side isn’t going into or with the drift the entire trip. The most important thing to remember is to always be on the bottom. You need to feel the bottom or you’re not going to effectively catch fluke

      @@alejandro3485 good to know. Didnt realized it was different w bait. Always jigged on the beach, and just assumed using bait was like bottom fishing but it's not exactly. Makes sense. Thank you for the quick and detailed reply

    • @The_Bearded_Fisherman
      @The_Bearded_Fisherman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly what Alejandro said. Wind is dictating your boat drift speed. Typically the harder the wind the faster the drift. The faster the drift the heavier the weight needed. You always want to be in contact with the ocean floor while fluking. Thats the most important aspect of fluking. Im always checking wind speed before i even make the trip down the shore. 5 to 10 mph winds are the sweet spot in my opinion. These conditions allow for lighter gear and an overall more enjoyable experience

      Ill say this much Payton is the new captain this year so give it another try if you haven’t yet this year. This man works extremely hard to find the fish. Will not spend long amounts of time fishing areas that aren’t producing. He bounced us around all day long and kept us on fish. Hes a great captain. That’s the God honest truth

      @@The_Bearded_Fishermanars ago I’d say mid 2010s they were busted for keeping a ridiculous amount of short fish people keeping well over their limits and they were fined heavily was honestly surprised they allowed them to keep fishing that season, Big Mohawk is ok not the best. I have my own personal boat so I don’t need to go on party boats I went out for tog on Mohawk this winter and it was shitty, only one catching fish was Peyton, he anchored the boat where the front was only over the wreck and stayed there all day, spot produced a few blackfish and 2 cod. Overall absolutely terrible I’ve been on incredible tog trips I’ve been on shitty tog trips that was the worst. He’s ok, fluking is easy. The coast from sandy hook to cape may has progressively gotten better over the last couple years, for me at least. I wouldn’t rant and rave like it’s the greatest boat in Nj it’s very very far from that. Peyton is a cool dude tho I’ll give him that, still a lot to learn fishing and buisness wise and I’ll leave it at that.

    • @The_Bearded_Fisherman
      @The_Bearded_Fisherman  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To be honest im usually always using these two setups. I have been switching the reels up on the spinning combo just because i need to get a new line roller bearing in the Vanford. Still functional but the noise is getting to me. My last posted video i used a Daiwa Procyon, and the next video ill be posting i actually use a Shimano Nasci which is the most affordable for the performance. Despite the line roller bearing i need replaced in the Vanford id use that reel everytime. Its extremely light and has great drag.
