I feel silly about getting so psyched about new top end gear bc I can’t possibly justify buying more but I always end up deciding I have a legitimate “need” to do so. Yep, Gotta problem there…😮😢😅😊😊😊😊😊 I don’t care tho.
Thank you, Matt and Tim. Great job with the Guides this year under what I can imagine were challenging circumstances. A suggestion for the 2024 editions if I may: Consider compiling a Guide that speaks to the unique needs of the bank angler. Many of us are limited by the gear we are able to carry, and we often ask our combos and baits to fulfill a wide range of functions as a result. TH-cam is loaded with angling content, but it seems like very little of it is directed at fishing from the bank; I think a few words dedicated to this pursuit would be greatly appreciated by the viewers. Thank you again for everything you share with us; your channel is a reliable source of education and entertainment, and I very much appreciate your efforts. Good luck to those heading out to have a go at the bass today and have a great Tuesday!
the main issue for matt and tim would be the fact that they probably don't do enough bank fishing to justify doing a tackle guide for that. another issue would be there isn't much gear specifically designed for bank fishing. The closest would probably be BFS, but where it shines on a boat it also shines on shore. But bank fishing would make an interesting seminar/clinic style of episode, but i'm not sure if there's anything "advanced" or technique specific theyve honestly experienced enough themselves that nost people have not already to make a full episode on it. From my experience, the main differences between boat fishing and bank fishing exists in the limitation of water you have access to, and that usually means your techniques and presentations are also going to be limited. Specifically, speaking vertical presentations and deep cranking are generally off the table because the water along the shoreline is almost always too shallow for them. That means: -Casting distance becomes a higher priority from the bank than it is from a boat -Weedless baits should be given more priority because getting your bait out of a snag is hundreds of times more difficult than from a boat. -Extensive knowledge and skill regarding everything about top water fishging should also be a priority for bank anglers. -Gear must be limited to what you can carry while fishing, because traveling the shoreline is crucial. Especially on highly pressured bodies of water. Having to put down and pick something up consumes too much time every time you want make a cast, and having to walk back to get the gear you have to put down also can be tiring. -The presence of hard or sandy bottoms, rocks, boulders, steep slopes, and rip rap become more important than just fishing any point, beach, reed line, tree line. or grass line. -Downsizing isn't always a necessity, and lighter is better than too heavy. Casting Distance: -Longer rods help, as well as med, to med-fast actions only. -Use lighter than heavier line -Conventional should be a priority for distance and drag heavy baits, like spinnerbaits, chatter, a rigs, frogs, and spooks, heavier jerkbaits, shallow cranks -Straight braid is often better than straight mono or fluorocarbon, or using a leader, because of snags and less stretch on long casts; the increased sensitivity helps you feel the type of bottom, identify submerged structure; and increased strength with much lower line diameter helps with distance -when using spinning reels, always try to have your line wound on by machine or rig your own system where you can take your spool off to be wound vertically along with a vertically aligned spool. -portable rod rack that can be strapped to your back is better than a strap with loops holding two or more rods. -a holster for a seconds rod and reel is more convenient than a rod rack with two ore more rod and reels.
Man I get so excited everytime you guys do ultra high end combos as a younger fisherman you guys have taught me a lot thanks and keep uploading videos!
When I started watching you guys a many years ago , after a bad motorcycle accident, my life completely changed and you too remind me of love for bass fishing . I have watched your buyers guide for years and when I hit the 300 combos I was so excited and year after year my dollars go up . I will never have all the high end you do but I love every year moving up in dollar amount . I went from not having any expride to falling in love and having 6 . You guys are awesome and I truly thanking you for me falling in love in bass fishing again . I had ten years of depression after my wreck and realize I can’t golf or ride motorcycles again . I really needed something to find something to want to live for and thanks to you too falling in love with bass fishing gives me something to love when my life sucks and I love how much of family men you too are . Thank you for doing what yall do some of use need it to live . Some of us to do for hobby and some of us do for reason live . Thanks guys and merry Christmas love you guys
Why would I spend an hour watching two guys talking about $1000 plus combos that I would never even think about buying? Why: Because you make it fun, interesting, and educational. Always a joy. Thanks.
Unless something has changed, I think the Legend Elite rods are the lowest price of entry to rods with Fuji Torzite guides on the whole market. It's a nice objective selling point if someone is particularly interested in that. I love my 7 foot MH Legend Elite for fishing finesse football jigs, compact jigs, and some true finesse jigs. I have it paired with the Japanese made version of the Zillion SV TW which is a tad lighter than the US version (made in Malaysia) due to having an aluminum main gear rather than brass (and is usually about 100 dollars cheaper in other markets). That combo just does that job exactly right.
What an epic journey that was gentleman! Thank you so much for taking so much of your time(not to mention resources) to fully explain why these choices in gear matter. It's this depth and earnestness that has kept me coming back going on 10 years. You have helped and influenced so many gear choices over the years, that when I gauge gear now,it's based on many fundamentals I took from the both of you. I hope you and yours have happy holidays and enjoy some time on the water already!
Thank you so much! Your continued support through the years is appreciated by all of us! And yes, we're ready for some desperately needed fishing. The next few videos are slated to be exactly that; it's time to get back on the water!!
9:07 Only catching up on this video now. The blue Steez 761MML (“the Unicorn Rod”) was my entry into that line of rods. It’s such a versatile rod, can throw heavier long-distance & deep-water dropshots, tubes, spybaits, small finesse jigs… I now I have 8 of the red Steez rods, including The One (which IMO is the perfect “can only bring one” smallmouth rod). Maybe it kicks off some additional explorations into that rod line. “The Ned” is a standout for me, best Ned rig rod I’ve owned - and I own the 821 NRR, as well. That solid tip makes it insanely fun and affords effortless bottom contact even on light Ned heads.
Appreciate you guys, in a world where 90% of fishing TH-camrs are focused on “budget” gear, it’s refreshing to see some high end gear reviews One comment - if you haven’t done so already, try that Steez CT SV TW 70 on the Megabass Destroyer P5 OneTen stick. I can bomb even 110Jrs with that 6’5” rod. The weight balances perfectly on that ultra lightweight, short rod. It really is the ultimate jerkbait combo - also does well with stuff like Z Cranks, OSP Blitz etc AND it’s a great rod for walking topwater baits and PopMax. More power to all the budget anglers out there, but I’m glad you guys also give some love to those of us who don’t like fishjng with cheap gear 🤘🏻
Gee I wonder which category you guys are in. $500 and under combo videos - 20 min or less. Enthusiast tackle - An hour and 10 ;) Loved every minute of them all guys. Thanks!
From a fisherman who owns a dozen conquest & nrx, I personally love my kastking pared with my Antares DC killer combo. Now the steez 70 & steez A were my best reel’s I own , but honestly I got on the new Antares DC and the none DC it’s night & day, I also have the Antares DC Md for my swimbait reel you guys have to try that beast.
@@donkukawski8609 same here bro, 12 pound the reels just for cranking, although I use the Antares 70 for jerkbait I paced the distance (because I’m a tackle junky) It cast further then the steez ct 70, I just bought that steez HLC too but if you ain’t throwing heavy plugs that thing is uncontrollable my opinion ain’t worth the $$
@@kayakfishingforpredators9107 right on bro, can cast a Roman made a mile away, believe it or not against the Antares DC 2021, the MD cast further with a 3/8 DC by a 8 feet, don’t seem like a lot but that’s 8 feet closer to a possible PB or state record.
@@20block.Pologroundz good to know. Definitely want to get more high end gear. It does make a difference. I was lucky and got that 2021 Anteres off a buddy for 450..not bad.
That 901 is amazing! Like Mat says. I have 2 of them . Hair jigs for smallest, live bait for walleye, small rapalas , spinners for trout and also makes an excellent panfish rod ! It's soft till middle of the blank and so much fun!!!
Ultra High End buyers guide is my favorite videos you guys do!! I know you guys do stuff that's easier to find that's sold on Tackle Warehouse and I understand. But there are soooo many High End JDM rods that are super nice.... I'd really like to own those Poison Ultima Combos you guys have...
U can afford anything U want bruh, just a matter of how bad U want it. Bout 10 yrs ago I was using bps rods & reels, now Nrx & Metaniums sit on my rod rack
I love my Daiwa zillion 21 or jdm. Whatever you want to call it. It’s a beautiful lightweight reel that you can throw anything on. Zero backlash ever with very minor adjustments. $200 off amazon japan shipped to your door in like a week.
I added up the price of all 4 combos I want right now after watching the rest of the buyers guides and its less than a lot of these combos lol $1200. I love it
Really enjoyed all these videos. Even though I probably won’t buy any of the super expensive rods/reels, all of those bait videos were very helpful. Always wanted to try some hard jerk bait, and I got some along with some shallow cranks during the hard bait sale. Thanks for the info.
guys i have substituted everything you say too trout fishing around the hi country in australia. You guys really do rock you tell as it is so thank you :)
I can't afford any of this stuff, but man I love watching this video. I have a bucket list of gear and I'm always adjusting it due to this video every year. The oneten stick is my dream rod.
Well done boys merry Christmas from Northern California thank you for all you do,it's much appreciated it's amazing been with TB for a long time ,when Matt started this who would have known, it would turn into the standard, well done boys
Glad to see the Shimano Ultima on there. I have the 6'10"" as well. I topped it with a Metanium 100. The sensitivity is more than amazing. It feels lighter than air. I have actually been using it for my BFS set up. It is perfect for my area in central Alabama. Fish on. Great video guys.
Funny you mentioned that steez I bought a 7'6" ML tatula to throw hair jigs and I've been doing nothing but throwing the core tackle hover rig on it. It works perfectly
Happy Happy Holidays Matt & Tim along with your families 🥳💜🥳 I’ve loved this years buyers guides even though TW made a change up, I enjoyed every one of the guides and I was able to get what I wanted, although I’ll wait before I get the Poison Ultima, I love my Adrenas…… I have read about and stoked to have an Ultima 💯❤️
awesome video guys i know this is buyers guide series...i would love to see your everyday combos you guys use specifically for every technique no matter price.....
Thanks for the videos! Would love to see a sit down live Q&A with both of you guys. Maybe to answer live questions we may have on certain topics. Merry Christmas!
Wow. With all the BFS videos I didn't think you had any spinning outfits left. 😂🤣 Thanks for sharing your great information on these high quality products. 👍
Lol Matt's like I ALMOST reached out to feel that Exist but knew better than that 😂. He knew he would end up buying an Exist if he put his hands on it!
From the 1st 100$ episode to this I’ve learned what rod Does what an why like could not have done a better job boyz I always wondered why the big ones spit it ? How ? … now I know .. possible best gear upload of all time can’t wait to see you gies tearin em up out there I know your ready
I have a pile of Megabass Destroyers but, My My, the 110 Stick is sooo nice! I pair the 110 stick the 110 special and the Jerkbait special all with Aldebarens. Needless to say after owning all 3, Im a jerkbait nut and fish them all year in the Ozarks. The water is clear from vegitation, so its a year round deal for me. Something about that 110 stick with the smaller JB's like an X-Nanahan or an X-80 Trickdarter, 110jr etc. It can fish a 110, and I use it for walleye on cold cold days when I dont want alot of movement from a Vision 110, but it shines with the 100 size and smaller. And with uts length its pinpoint accurate!
Baby plugging for the win! Thats my jerkbait rod and light swimbait smally rod! Big plus is i dont bend out the stock hooks on 110s. Thanks for your vids boys!!
Its like a candy shop! If Matt doesn’t want to touch it. It’s got to be awesome. Now I want that Exist and that Steez Sv tw Ct. For rods when in doubt just get an NRX+ lol well unless you got an Ultima.
I've got that St. Croix 7'4" heavy in the legend x with the Metanium mgl on it. Its probably my favorite rod i own. I use it for jigs, frogs, some swimbaits, and even an a-rig. Also very impressed with the feel of my 1st stella i just got. For now i put it on a 7'3" medium xfast st croix legend tournament bass and it really feels good on there, but i'm trying to fight the urge to get the 872 nrx + for it. Both the same length, action, and power so probably not worth having both, but thats never stopped me before! Sooner or later i'll just have to get an nrx of some sort to see what they're all about! Great buyers guides, thanks for covering everything from cheap to expensive. I use it all, and it's all fun. Hell, i even still get my old zebco 33 classic out and have fun with that. Thanks again, and Merry Christmas!
Hey guys I really enjoy the videos. So much knowledge for free. I often wonder as much as you guys record there has to be some pretty funny stuff that happens. Any chance you guys have a blooper video in the works?
Hey guys great content as always. Two things for ya. 1st: How sensitive is sensitive enough and how light is light enough? Also I can’t justify high end gear because I’d be to afraid of possibly breaking it. Thanks
For these larger lines what connection knot are you guys using to go from braid to fluoro/mono? How long of a leader do you tie on? Sometimes i will tie on a 20-30ft leader but it feels like overkill😂
Man I have to say that the conquest line of rods along with the megabass destroyers are the absolute best rods I have in my box. I want to try the legend x series but they are so often sold out. Must be a fantastic rod.
Being a tackle junkie, I really enjoy your yearly buyers guide videos. Question..... the blanks on the St Croix Legend Elite and Legend Xtreme are the same though the handles and guides are different. Looking at specs, the Elite is significantly lighter in weight. As far as functionality, is an extra $250+ going to buy you any better sensitivity or casting distance with the Xtreme? Thanks!
May have simply missed it listening about all these rods, but I’m wanting a good mid priced glide bait rod. I bought a Tranx reel and want to pair it with a rod to throw hard swim baits, glides, wakes, or heavier soft swim baits. And hopefully I’m not wanting too many type baits for one rod.
Of the casting rods you listed, or ones that you didn't, which would you suggest for 2.8 and 3.3 Keitechs? Fishing deep on underspins or jig heads slowly on the bottom for big spots?
Tim chose the Mega Bass Dark Sleeper for Finesse swim bait combo #5 casting. Can you recommend an ultra high GLoomis option. Also a NRX + casting drop shot option
Thank you Matt and Tim, I look forward to this series more than any other series on the internet! Question: my wife gave me a new Steez CT SV TW 70, which rod for the ultimate pairing?
In several of the buyer guides you have mentioned the different powers (power/finesse) for the Shimano spinning reels. I wanted to see if you have a list (or could direct me to a list) where the Shimano spinning reel powers are so I can try and pair the rods I purchase with the proper spinning reels. Thank you for the on going education ! Wishing you and your families a healthy and positive Holiday Season !!
For Power, your looking at the metal frame reels like the Stella, Twinpower, Exsence and Stradic. For the finesse side, the best I've used is the Vanquish (JDM) and the Vanford. For power, I prefer my 17' Exsence c3000MHG and for finesse the 19' or 23' Vanquish in the C2000S, C2000SHG, C2500SHG, or the 2500S are my favorites followed by the Vanford 2000 or 2500.
Hey guys love the channel and have a question. I bought 2 Team Diawa light and tough 6’6” 3/16 to 1oz . 10-17 pound bait cast rods. Probably 28 years ago when I use to bass fish a lot they are like new and am getting back into bass fishing. What would you suggest for a couple good reals to pair with them and what do you think there best application would be ? Thank you
Hey Matt and Tim. I have a question. I do a lot of my fishing in rivers. I don’t have a lot of good lakes near me. I fish for a little bit of everything. I’m asking in general, not just to target bass, but I invested in a metanium after a lot of should I or shouldn’t I spend this kind of money, but what would be a good choice for a rod mid to high end for throwing smaller type bfs baits? A rod that can do bfs plus a little more if I need it to? Any suggestions?
What do you guys think of the Chronarch MGL 151? I’ve been eyeing a Curado MGL 150 but haven’t been able to find a left handed version so I went with the Chronarch. Is it worth staying with it or should I keep on the hunt for the Curado?
You have more people fishing from a bank than you do from a boat. Your bank fishing followers would love a gear break down for the pond and lake hoppers of the world.
I'd like to see you compare the gloomis 844mbr to the P5 Xbites for finesse jigs. The tip on Xbites helps work finesse jigs little easier and has a ton of power when you need it.
You recommend a 853 MBR rod for finesse jigs. What about a little longer rod like a 903MBR? Would that still be just as good as it’s just five inches longer?
Beautiful stuff, guys, and well explained! I just dont understand the high prices when you can order the same stuff for almost half the price difference overseas. I realize you dont have the warranties that you get from ordering here, but on reels, that's really not that big of a fear. Especially when comparing the price of reels like the Steez CT SV TW. $700 vs. $400 overseas.
I use mine for BFS personally. It is an amazing bottom contact rod. Super sensitive. You can feel the lightest of action on it. Truly different than any other rod I own or have used.
Question, if you are looking to pair a mid and high end, you you go with a high end rod paired with a mid reel or a high end reel with a mid range rod?
I love that out of all the buyers guides, this always ends up being the longest one 😂. And that’s a good thing because we’ve been waiting on this vid all year!
Ha! It's hard to hide the passion for high end gear!
Like 3x longer lol!
Im a kayak guy down here in So Cal and fish the San Diego reservoirs
I picked up two spinning rods
G. Loomis NRX+ 822S DSR
And
G. Loomis IMX-Pro 853S JWR
If price was no factor would you pair them up with a exsence 3000 and a Stella 3000 or just get the 2 Stella’s and call it a day?

Ultra High End buyers guide is my favorite videos you guys do!! I know you guys do stuff that's easier to find that's sold on Tackle Warehouse and I understand. But there are soooo many High End JDM rods that are super nice.... I'd really like to own those Poison Ultima Combos you guys have...
Cant afford but love watching every year. Got to have dreams.
100%! Dreams create motivation and that's how we get things done 👍🏼
Merry Christmas guys! Thanks for another buyer's guide gauntlet. Hopefully you can go fishing now 👍
It's time to fish!!! Thanks for coming along on the journey!
Love the energy in this video look forward to theses gear reviews every year. Merry Christmas and thank you guys
Thank you! Merry Christmas!!
Thank you for coming along! That rod is a perfect dream to strive for!
Well done boys merry Christmas from Northern California thank you for all you do,it's much appreciated it's amazing been with TB for a long time ,when Matt started this who would have known, it would turn into the standard, well done boys
I always enjoy watching you guys talk about high end gear even though they are way out of my budget. Another great video guys 👍 Merry Christmas
Thank you for the support!!
I thought y'all were tougher down in Alabama. You can't handle a rod that weighs a few ounces?
Funny you mentioned that steez I bought a 7'6" ML tatula to throw hair jigs and I've been doing nothing but throwing the core tackle hover rig on it. It works perfectly
Ha! That's awesome!!
Tired of the hard road but first payday in awhile I haven't bought tackle thru you tube love you style keep on brotha
Years ago I switched to NRX rods & Metanium reels, no more upgrading. Fishing as a Co angler, need every advantage I can get!
awesome video guys i know this is buyers guide series...i would love to see your everyday combos you guys use specifically for every technique no matter price.....
I’ve got the 7M Ultima paired with a 2500 Exist and it’s actually insane how amazing the rod is
Threw a daiwa on the ultima?
Great series! Definitely have a few new rods, reels, and lures I'm going to try.
Awesome! We're glad we got to help in a small way!
Thanks for the videos! Would love to see a sit down live Q&A with both of you guys. Maybe to answer live questions we may have on certain topics. Merry Christmas!
Got my first GOOD spinning rod from these vids
Awesome!!! 🙌
Wow. With all the BFS videos I didn't think you had any spinning outfits left. 😂🤣 Thanks for sharing your great information on these high quality products. 👍
Ha! There is a time and place for ALL of it 🙂
Yes! It is here!!!!!!!!
Love the content, super curious as to what you throw on the 610 ultima, seems wildly fast in the store.
Lol Matt's like I ALMOST reached out to feel that Exist but knew better than that 😂. He knew he would end up buying an Exist if he put his hands on it!
😂😂😂 it pays to know your limits!
I would love to see you guys do videos on catching other fish than just bass using your high end setups.
Love how you guys use multiple brands. 👊💪🏼we’ll done
The ultimate is unbelievable.
But the NRX+ line is very amazing as well. Love them both.
Enjoyed the series. Wondering if you ever have a custom rod built? Who builds them? What do you have built that you can’t buy off the shelf?
Great video as always you guys rock!!!
👏👏👏 thank Tim and Matt ❤
Merry Christmas 🎄🎁⛄🎅🧑🎄🦌👼
I read your video on TH-cam about baitcasters you are teaching me a lot of to do with big and I am making that
HERE WE GOOOOOO!!!
Yes!!!
Hey guys I really enjoy the videos. So much knowledge for free. I often wonder as much as you guys record there has to be some pretty funny stuff that happens. Any chance you guys have a blooper video in the works?
The dark sleeper rod has become my favorite 1/2 oz jackhammer rod
Hey guys great content as always. Two things for ya. 1st: How sensitive is sensitive enough and how light is light enough? Also I can’t justify high end gear because I’d be to afraid of possibly breaking it. Thanks
16:11 they are doing what in the boat ?!?! 😳😳 jk good video guys
For these larger lines what connection knot are you guys using to go from braid to fluoro/mono? How long of a leader do you tie on? Sometimes i will tie on a 20-30ft leader but it feels like overkill😂
One ten stick came in the mail today, now I have to stare at it till may 😂
Matt, I was just curious about what you have been throwing on the Poison Ultima.
Thanks!
Matt you wore a Christmas tree two years ago on Christmas Day I think it’s Tim’s turn to wear it out fishing
😂😂😂
You need to add the megabass p5 destroyer madbull. That's the best junk fishing rod out there IMHO
What is that little yellow thing that Tim has clipped on the Megabass Z Crank Elseil? Just above where the reel is. @52:30
Z cranc elseil, Xbites, Legend X 7ft1 but maybe Tim recommends a Poison Ultima 😂😂
I’m dying to pull the trigger on the poison ultima but not having a lifetime warranty on a 900$ rod scares the hell out of me lol
We haven't had a single issue, or heard of any issues... but we certainly can't discount that concern. It's a big leap for sure!
Ya highly confused how shimano can buy loomis and not absorb their warranties
Hey guys love the channel and have a question. I bought 2 Team Diawa light and tough 6’6” 3/16 to 1oz . 10-17 pound bait cast rods. Probably 28 years ago when I use to bass fish a lot they are like new and am getting back into bass fishing. What would you suggest for a couple good reals to pair with them and what do you think there best application would be ? Thank you
Own a Steez 7'6 with an exist and an NRX+ 852s with an Excense. My river staples!
Thanks for these videos guys! Can the 844c MBR throw swim jigs well also?
Finesse and compact swim jigs, absolutely.
💯 confidence is key and my expride with a chronarch mgl is confident!!!
Hey happy holidays TB, thanks for all of the breakdowns I routinely refer back to these videos throughout the year. ALOT! haha... preciate ya🐟💪✌️
Hi Matt/Tim, another gem of a buyers guide collection - nice work! I'm curious to learn what size line(s) you use on the 844c for finesse jigs?
What do you guys think about the new Fenwick world class (spinning) rod compared to those?
You have more people fishing from a bank than you do from a boat. Your bank fishing followers would love a gear break down for the pond and lake hoppers of the world.
Yessssssir
So what would be the choice for small football jigs?
Legends Extreme or Poison Ultima? I own 11 St Croix rods and 0 Shimano (No bias on this purchase). Antares or Mag? Which combo?
Great video, I throw squarebills with my Aldebaran. I love that reel.
It's so good!!
I LOVE my OneTen Stick!
What techniques do you use the 6’10” med ultima for?
I use mine for BFS personally.
It is an amazing bottom contact rod. Super sensitive. You can feel the lightest of action on it.
Truly different than any other rod I own or have used.
Question, if you are looking to pair a mid and high end, you you go with a high end rod paired with a mid reel or a high end reel with a mid range rod?
I know this is a little late. Have you ever tried the destroyer oneten for Jerkbaits? If so what were your thoughts?
I wonder if you guys can do a video showcasing the performance of your ultra high end gear
