    This is awesome! Great video, informative, and drumming skills. I would like to see how you are able to record all the different drums on each separate track because that is what I am trying to do. Also, is there a difference in sound by changing your drums to making it look like an actually drumset vs having the stock drums? Or is it just because of preference and having it feel like an actual drumset? Overall, great video!

    Nice video. What's cool about the USB recording is that its all digital. I assume there is no encoding/decoding and that you are getting the exact wave forms directly from the td-27 engine.
    There is also a third way to record now, directly to the SD card.

    Just one thing, I could not find the installer after downloading, just a read me which tells you, plug the TD27 and wait. After 10 minutes you just open the device manager and go to the sounds, video and game controllers and it should be there. Great vid btw! Testing Reaper too!

    I recorded a whole song with the mono master and mono direct 1-2 inputs selected by accident...it sounds pretty good still and isn't obviously mono sounding. Would it sound beefier as stereo tracks? Or is it just that the spacial elements are better represented (toms/cymbols)?

    Thanks for this video - really good. One thing I have noticed is that the TD27 driver seems only to output over USB at 44.1Khz. This initially caused me an issue using the inbuilt Audio Interface, as the original track was recorded at 96Khz (it played half speed). Apparently the TD-27 can output at 96Khz but I have never worked out how to do it. Do you know?

    This video was so wildly helpful, you have no idea. MIDI to me is basically rocket science. I don't understand it in the slightest. Knowing i can record the sound direct from the e-drums makes a world of difference.
    Question: Do you know if I am able to hook the TD27 to the audio interface, as well as plug headphones into the interface and hear what i am playing/recording. Or would I only be able to hear what i am playing through headphones directly plugged into the TD27 Module?
    The reason I ask: I want to be able to hook the TD27 up to interface, and have my friends hook up (Bass and Guitar), and be able to all play & record and hear ourselves though headphones. This way we don't have to play through amps and we can record through reaper what ever we play. I hope this multi level question isn't too confusing. Thank You!

    • @demonicsweaters
      @demonicsweaters  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would need to have the headphones plugged into the audio interface. Unless it was just you, then you can use the TD-27 as an interface itself

    Can this be used in a live situation? I have the td-27 but i really hate that they only have 3 bands of eq. then i have to eq the whole kit as one. Would be nice to bring the tracks in separate to Reaper, add plugins and eq to each channel and send back to my digital mixer. Been messing around with live professor with being able to use plugins live but would definitely be nice to have full control over each channel separately on the td-27 for live use.

    *Edit - I've just answered my own question regarding why I was hearing the module sounds instead of the VST sounds... I had to turn off "Local Control" under the MIDI settings on the module. I still have an issue however, that the volume of the triggered sounds from the module (when hitting the pads) is much lower in the headphones than when I click on the drums in SSD5.5.
    Thanks very much for this video Justin, it's helped me tremendously! There is however something I'm struggling with, which I'm hoping you can provide some advice on... I'm really struggling with the VST approach, for use in a live situation. Currently, I'm just trying to do some testing at home with my headphones, but ultimately I'd like to use VST's live, to improve the sound of the drum kit (TD-17KV) which is provided by a local venue.
    I've connected a Roland TD-27 module via USB to a laptop with Reaper v6.71 and SSD5.5 installed. I've setup the TD-27 module as a audio device in Reaper, and under "Midi hardware settings" I've enabled the TD-27 as an input and an output. My headphones are connected to the TD-27 module.
    In SSD5.5, I can see that the kit is being triggered when I hit the pads... however, the issue is that the sound I'm hearing through the headphones is still the sound from the drum kit on the module, and not the VST.
    Should I have the headphones plugged into the laptop instead? Or, are there settings I need to adjust on the module so that I can hear the VST sounds? Looking forward, how would I get the sounds from the module to the speakers in the venue?
    Hope you can help!
    P.S. I have spent hours looking for advice on setup for using VST's in a live situation, and can't find anything! Perhaps a good video for you to do(?)

      @demonicsweaters  ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a way to make the TD27 work as both audio and MIDI. Turn off local control, then select the TD27 as both your audio interface and MIDI interface in your DAW, now the TD27 output will play the sounds from your computer. Live you can just use the L/R outputs of the module to go direct to the PA.

    I'm interested in recording audio from my module to the DAW- no MIDI sound substitution. I know that I need an audio interface but do I need something that has an input labelled as "line" or is the more common "instrument, mic, guitar" sufficient? I've seen a few older interfaces that allow for "pad" input options which I assume is the same as "line".

    • @demonicsweaters
      @demonicsweaters  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pad is a db cut, usually used for hot mics. Line or instrument inputs should work fine.

    My favourite thing about this module is being able to use the digital snare + ride. But .... I don't know if that justifies the cost of all all 3. I am not sure if Roland has a patent on that stuff or if we will see other brands coming out with digital pads as well. I also wonder what prevents Roland from making their next flagship all digital?

    • @demonicsweaters
      @demonicsweaters  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah, I've still never used any of the digital pads. I actually wish they made a smaller digital ride like a 15" or 16". I think 18" is cool, but really I don't need one that big and am fine with the smaller cymbals due to space. I think an all digital kit will be something we see eventually. I bet they hold the patents, or I think we'd see others selling them by now.

    • @jamessullenriot
      @jamessullenriot 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@demonicsweaters I could only imagine the cost of the all digital Roland kit especially if they do have a lock on the patents for a while. And since I wouldn't want a second mortgage for that kit, I would probably just wait for the patents to expire and get the of the Alesis all Digital SE kit (SE meaning they will likely mess up the first pass then due to rushing then make it respectable with the second pass like they did with the strike 🤣 )

      I'm not really sure I understand your question. VSTs are a software plugin. EZdrummer does not convert MIDI to audio, but uses the MIDI data to play samples that are part of the EZDrummer plugin. You could record the midi DATA then play it back through the TD-27 module if that is what you mean.

  • @Spagz

    Hey man! I just got my TD27KV. My first real electronic drum set. I have surgery in a little over a week for a hand that has been in an accident. I have been trying to learn drums for over a year now but my hand just won't let me. So massive surgery. I won't even be able to use my thumb for a minimum of 8-10 weeks and probably 6 months it will be mostly useless. So, i am setting up for being a single handed drummer!
    First, thanks for this. Exactly what i was looking for. I can't wait to get good recorded sounds!
    Couple questions. Is EZ Drummer enough, or do you think it is worth it to get Superior?
    This one is tricker probably.
    I setup a kick pedal on a Roland KD65 i think it is, using it as a snare. I will still be using the snare, but there are times you need to be faster than one hand obviously.
    Have a double pedal on main kick.
    I want to use a set of hi hats at 12:00 on my snare. I started setting it up today, using just a 10" Alesus cymbal and Alesis HHC pedal (forget model but its the variable one).
    I have the VH10 hats that came with it, but wanted the smaller size for my placement. Also didn't qant to use a remote hat for it, thus the Alesis stuff.
    I may use the VH10 to the left if I have space left over for more finesse playing, but its crowded!
    So all that for this question. How can i use that cymbal (or any pad) as a hi hat CLOSED sound all the time? I know you can make anything controlled by the HHC pedal, which is cool. But I cant figure out how i can do that so i can use those middle hats closed, while using my foot on the snare pedal.
    Ideally I could also use a drum rim as an open or sizzle setting too. Yes, i want everything lol.
    Sorry for the long drawn out comment. Hopefully the answer is something simple and not having to take a course on MIDI programming to accomplish this.
    Keep up the great content. I know this is older but I went to your channel first for answers.

      Sorry to hear about your hand, hope you make a speedy recovery! I think as far as using pedals for drums, it's probably best to use kick triggers rather than hi hats. EZ Drummer 3 is by far the best sounding plugin I've used, even much better sounding than SD3. SD3 allows a ton of tweaking though, so you can get it there too, but EZ3 right out of the box is killer!

      The best way is to record the drums in a DAW then a video camera or iPhone for the video. Then sync them together in a video editor like Kdenlive.

    Thanks for the great video and explanation. I have a question that I hope someone can help a noob to e-drums. If I make the td27 my main audio device, how do I record anything else simultaneously? For example, recording guitars, bass etc live at the same time as the drums? Thanks.

      You can actually do all of that with just the usb cable on the td-27. It will allow you to run midi and audio at the same time. Then you can turn off local control in the module and the SD3 sounds can come right out of the module.

      @@romonaor Actually, you can use the TD-27 as an audio device and midi device at the same time. If you select it as both in whatever DAW you're using, the audio will come though the TD-27. It even has a mixer setting in the module that allows you to mix the levels to your liking. You can turn off local midi control so you don't hear the internal sounds of the TD-27!

    One question no one is asking is why Roland still refuses to write the drivers for the ever increasing number of pro digital mixers that are able to do onboard multiple individual channel playback and processing from various DAWS via usb. The answer is simple. It would destroy Roland's ability to keep charging the earth for its flagship TD50X module's long outdated individual, physical jack audio outputs. And we wouldn't want them to feel embarrassed in any way about this, would we?
