The only major draw back of it is it's lack of multichannel outputs. Thankfully there is a workaround that can get all your drums on separate channels in your DAW! Thanks for sharing. I would add 1) On the VENDOR setting, you can use both MIDI and USB Audio Interface on the TD-17 simultaneously, you do not need a separate audio interface to do this, and you'll run less risk of distorting the TD-17's sound by taking the audio straight through the USB. 2) As at least one other commenter mentioned, you can handle the separating of the drum sounds in the DAW instead of the TD-17, which may be much easier in terms of interface. Say you have all the drums together in one MIDI track as you created at the start of your process here. Method A) In Logic and many other DAWs, you can right click on the MIDI region and select "separate by note pitch," this will automatically put each drum on its own track. From there just playback each MIDI track individually while recording the Roland audio to a corresponding audio track. If your DAW doesn't have a "separate by note pitch" feature, then Method B) Duplicate that track once for each drum, retaining the original MIDI track with all the drums for reference and in case of an error. Now let's say your first dupe is going to be the snare. Open the piano roll editor for the MIDI for that track and locate the snare notes. Now select all the snare notes, which will be in a straight line across. Then in most DAWs you can right-click and select "invert selection" to select everything but the snare. Now hit delete to delete all those non-snare notes - this track is now just the snare. Solo that MIDI snare track and play the project back, the Roland will play just the snare while you record that playback to its own corresponding audio track. Wash/rinse/repeat for the other MIDI tracks. With either method, the DAW interface is easier for working through the tedious process, and you won't clutter the module with patches for single-note kits. Good video thanks again.

Great tutorial. I followed it word for word and it made total sense and it works a treat. Have used it on two songs in the last day and then sharing to band members around the country. You can copy the MIDI track for how many channels you want and delete all notes except the one you will record.
In this way, you will create a copyof your mid track called "Snare" and delete all notes, except the 37, 38 and 40 (the head snares note).
Instead you create so many kits in your module, you will create one track for each note you want to split.
You just play "solo" in DAW for each track, but using the same kit on TD17 module.

@@demonicsweaters If you put the USB Mode when you record in VENDOR, you can record the MIDI e the RL track using only the USB port. Then you put in GENERIC to record the sounds of module. Don't need the RL output and digital interface! =)

quick tip. Hold the enter button while using the dial, and you go up or down by whole numbers, instead of by hundredths. Saves SSSOOOOO much time!
i think it would be a little bit simpler if you just mute the midi notes of every drum you dont want to record on that channel (in ableton), instead of creating a preset for every single drum. I think you would have the same results. Cheers!

I have a question for everyone please. I followed this example to the letter and it works great (I'm using Ntrack9); however, when I send the MIDI back to the TD17 for each individual track, I'm getting a weird phasing effect on the snare and cymbal tracks but the toms and kick are fine. I'm using a Focusrite Scarlett I/O and there are no effects turned on in my DAW or in the I/O settings, so I'm not sure where the phasing effect is coming from. Has anyone else encountered this and if so, could you please let me know how you fixed the issue?

Sorry if I missed this, but have you had any issues mapping the 17 to GarageBand (iPad/iPhone)? I notice that some of the pads don’t respond at all when hit(what’s being picked up on GarageBand).

It’s a little silly to sell electronic drum kits with only two audio outputs. I get why they wouldn’t have this feature on very inexpensive entry level kits but anything over $1,000 really should come ready for easy multitrack recording.
This is a decent workaround though. I wouldn’t have thought to record a session to midi and send it back through the module for each new track. Having to create new patches with each drum soloed is a little clunky, especially if you want to record several songs, all using different drum sounds. But if you pick a set of samples and tend to stick with those, you can basically do this once and have a quick and easy way to get everything on separate tracks.

Might be off topic, but I just stumbled upon this neat piece of software: "V-Drums Explorer" by Jon Skeet. One of the next versions will probably allow copy/paste of individual instruments to other kits.
how do you specifically pick a patch on the TD17? right now when i go channel 10 it plays the entire set not just the kick for example
are you using a hi speed printer cable? wondering if a non-hi-speed cable results in any extra bit of detectable latency. tried to click on your reverb shop link above but it only takes you to reverb's general page.
It’s just an Amazon basics usb 2.0 cable. Any modern DAW should have latency compensation anyway, so it really shouldn’t make much of a difference, though I’m not even sure you can even buy usb 1 cables anymore, haha. The link’s working for me, I just tested it. Not sure why it’s not for you.
You probably figured it out already, but if you hold the enter button while spinning the dial, the td17 changes the parameter faster
So I'm a sound engineer with over a decade programming Roland modules and here's my take away from this :
inside the module, there's a function that allow you to make a perfect clone-copy of both audio and MIDI datas, and to replay that copy and scroll through your patches to change the sound of the kit. This is the same as using your DAW to send the MIDI data back. Anyway... So, if you create a copy of the kit for each individual track you want and mute everything else but kick, snare, etc, and then replay the recording of the take that's in the memory of your module (or the DAW in this case), it will record the *audio of only the snare on the snare patch with everything else muted. So then you just have to create a new track for the snare, and replay the take from the module. And... boom!! The snare is now on a separate track. Wants a new snare??? Create a bunch of snare only presets, and switch sound seamlessly in the baffled face of your client. Do the same for the kick, and if they ask for anything else, do it as well. Add in all separate tracks for the mixing engineer. Now, you have both audio AND midi datas, for the "reference track" (overheads) AND for all individual tracks.... GENIUS.
Jas, I don't see any way to make a copy of a recorded Drum track (recorded in the TD-17) in the TD-17, let alone be able to assign a different drum kit to that audio.

Thanks so much for this great tutorial. I ran into something in Ableton that prevented my MIDI output from driving the TD-17, and it took a long time to find. It's in the Ableton config, MIDI tab. Where you see Out: TD-17, click the down-caret. MIDI Clock Type should be set to Pattern, not Song. Hope this helps, thanks again.

hey mate, ive got the VH10 hi hat, but for some reason, i CANT get it to map accurately to MIdi...any advice?
Try setting it to VH11 or 12 in the module. I have run into weirdness on my TD-27 where I have to set it to VH10 when doing midi, even though I have a VH11.
Buddy, I've not even gotten into the video yet, so I'll reply here with my results. I was struck by your comment about superior drummer, and EZdrummer. I prefer the sounds in SD, I've got 2.0, not 3 :(, but I can't seem to get my kit emulated perfectly in sd2. I use lots of layering to maximize sample options. For instance, my tom rims are the tom rim sound, but when you hit them hard, they're a splash, a trash crash, china, and a stack. Also, the bow on my crashes is layered with additional crashes. This allows me to have a massive kit with 4 toms, 2 splashes, 2 chinas, trash crash, and a stack. Oh, you just burst my bubble lol, I had a Presonus Firepod 8 channel interface, but it recently died, and now I'm just straight into the PC with USB, and 1/4 to 1/8 cables direct.

You could do it much simpler than this if all you want are stereo drum tracks. Just use the TD-17 driver as your audio device in Garageband and you're good to go!
HEY! JUSTIN: The Mixcraft DAW says it can record Multi Timbral instruments and place each sound on different tracks. That's what it says in the Mixcraft 9 user guide. Theoretically, this would allow each drum on the TD17, which is a Multi Timbral Instrument, to be recorded with each drum on separate tracks. It's late and I haven't tried it yet.
Unfortunately, no, that's not what this means. You would still need multiple outputs for each timbre.
Think I'll try that, but I think it would work if you just recorded the midi with generic then routed and recorded the other channels with vendor. Also a good tip is to hold down the enter key to fast scroll, less wear and tear on your module.
Hey Dominic, I was not able to get the MIDI signal to send back to TD-17 using Studio One. Your Ableton seems to be more user friendly when assigning inputs and outputs per track. I believe in Studio One, once you assign, all tracks are assigned.
I don't know anything about Studio One honestly. I've never used it.

you can copy the midi tracks and erase the extra notes and repeat the same process. works for all sound banks of the drum set. what do you think? sorry for my English, I speak Spanish.

Hey Justin, thanks for another super helpful video! I just recently purchased a TD-17 KVX and started experimenting with the module. I’m wondering if you know whether this same set up would work using MIDI over Bluetooth vs using a USB cable? I currently use an iPad for most of my recording and have my audio interface plugged into that through the camera adapter. The Bluetooth MIDI worked for recording the MIDI but it doesn’t seem to work for triggering the sounds in the module with the MIDI I’ve already recorded. Any ideas?
hmm, that I'm not super sure about. It may be that bluetooth midi only goes one way. I am going to be hooking my TD-17 back up in the next couple days, so I'll play with it and see what I can figure out.

@@demonicsweaters I’m not exactly sure why, but the Bluetooth MIDI is working properly now! So you can use this same method using MIDI over Bluetooth instead of using the USB cable. Could be useful if someone (like me) wants to record on an iPad/iPhone without multiple USB ports available.

@@demonicsweaters So after some further attempts it looks like while the MIDI over bluetooth technically works, it has some serious delay issues and not everything gets recorded properly, especially when doing more intricate grooves. So the plan now is to use a USB hub with the iPad, we’ll see if that works...
I was very disappointed the first few times I played the kit but I was at a music store. I do remember it triggering incredibly well but that's nothing new with the Roland. I'm guessing if you still use it you're not going to run with the stock sounds but I could be wrong, have you played with editing the sounds and have you found sounds you really like?
You can get full packs and epic sounding kits that can be transferred and imported to the td17 via usb it’s actually quite useful , I can also record my own sounds in wav and then export them to kit also

Tell me if someone had to install their own (third-party) custom sounds for Hi-Hat in the Roland TD-17 module. I recently purchased a Roland TD-17 KVX, and I can't install third-party custom Hi-Hat sounds in the TD-17 module. The sounds are loaded well, but it is impossible to install them so that the Hi-Hat sounds correctly, with the right sound in each extraction phase! For the rest of the instruments: Snare, Kick, Toms, Cymbals, everything loads and sounds, but for Hi-Hat it does not work! Third-party custom sounds are all in the right format (.wav) at 44.1 kHz/16 bits. With all types of strikes on VH-10 (Bow shot (Head-side), Edge shot (Rim-side), Open, Closed), one custom sound sounds, the one that you set first to any phase of sound extraction from Hi-Hat (Bow shot (Head-side), Edge shot (Rim-side), Open, Closed). That is, if, for example, you set the sound for the Edge shot mode, then it also sounds on other sound extraction modes with Hi-Hat.
Is it possible in principle to install custom sounds for Hi-Hat in the Roland TD-17 module or not?

You would most likely need to automate after you record the audio back into your DAW
Oh yes, you're right. automation is a post recording action. I don't have a whole lot of experience using automation but I imagine after the midi info was entered you could change the whole drumset patch with an entirely differenct set if the set was midi as well
This tutorial has helped me out tremendously! I just purchased a TD-17kvx and I won’t be getting superior drummer any time soon.
This method works perfectly on Pro Tools.
But am having trouble recording MIDI on FL Studio. It only seems to be recording an Audio Track and a midi pattern with no sound.

Would you need to do the recording of audio + playback of midi for each drum piece you want in separate tracks for each new project? Would creating a template make it possible to avoid having to do the multi recording + playback for every new project? If not, I see someone here was gracious enough to list the midi values for a drum map for the td-17. Seems that would be the easier solution.
Yeah, I think a better solution now is to just copy and paste the tracks then filter out the notes you don't want.
@demonicsweaters Did this today. I created a drum map for the td-17. Recorded the drums on a midi track. Went to the piano roll view in my DAW (Cakewalk), and solo'd the kick, created an audio track named "kick", played the midi back while recording the audio track. Repeated this for each drum piece. This is fine but want I want to do is, record multitrack in real time, which it appears can't be done unless 1. You use a drum vst or 2. Have a td-27 or td-50. Those two modules have an option for multitrack recording. I have EZ Drummer 3 and Kontakt 7 with Komplete 14 so I do have a wide variety of kits to choose from but it still would be nice to be able to record the td-17 in real time to seperate tracks for each drum piece. One thing I couldn't find for the drum map was a value for choking the cymbals. Although I am kind of proud of myself for even getting a drum map to work.
It always seemed like something that was beyond my capabilities. But I watched one of Creative Sauce's videos, and he provided a link to download a drum map for the SI drums which comes with Cakewalk. I had a midi note value list that Roland put out, so I loaded the SI kit's drum map and edited it with the td-17's values. Boom, it worked! But as much as I tried, I could not find a way to do the real time multitrack recording. I guess for the price of the td-17, and I have the td-17kvx, they didn't include that feature. Maybe Roland will release an update with that feature included. That would be sweet.
Anyone stumbled across this in Cubase? I'm having a hard time sending the MIDI back into the kit. Thanks in advance you guys!
I'm using "Vendor" on the TD17. In Cubase, record your drums as explained. On the midi track I choose for Routing-in my Audio Interface and for Routing-out the "TD 17"

@@demonicsweaters so i seem to be having an issue with a slight delay when recording the played back post performance individual drum tracks.
during the initial performance, my direct audio out captures the full drum set (the scratch track) easily and in time with the metronome, and the usb midi captures the midi data on time as well.
when i want to record the individual drums, i have the track configured so it sends midi data from the DAW midi track to the TD 17 module and then i capture the audio of that drum on a separate track using the 1/4 outs back into my interface. what i've noticed is the retriggered drums are dragging a little when they are recorded. i havent had any issues with latency with any other gear. any recommendation on how to remedy the issue? could it be latency? id rather not have manually drag my audio drum tracks over and guess exactly where they should line up. send help please.....
@@babymonkeymind If you're using ableton, make sure you're not using software monitoring, because that will add latency. Also, could be the issue on other DAWs
@@demonicsweaters so are you monitoring directly out of the module? i cant find any info on software monitoring and how not to do this. is there something i could be missing with a setting in the td 17 that allows me to hear the backing track coming from ableton and the drum sounds that are coming from the td 17, both at the same time? i have my audio in turned up to a decent level so that's not the problem. the only way i can hear the live drums and backing track is through my interface headphone output.
also, for some reason my initial scratch audio is being recorded just a touch earlier than the midi notes are recording. i've tested it just playing quarter notes to a click track to make sure everything is on time. i would assume that the audio scratch track would have some latency if anything, but it seems to be a hair ahead of the midi.

You may just be able to run the USB from the TD17 directly to the phone.

@@giannispan8129 The camera might not support USB input. I really don't know anything about Huawei phones. You could try using Open Camera and select external mic input in the settings.

There are a few different ways, one is just to plug the 1/4" audio outputs from the device to an audio interface, or if you are using a TD-17, you can use the USB connection to transmit audio.

Not this, but you could use a multichannel output audio interface and with EZDrummer can assign each output to separate drums.
Hey Justin, have you ever used (or tried to use) any of the multi-track recording apps for tablets/phones? Just curious.
I have. Audio Evolution for Android is about the best there is on that platform. But to me, the performance was never spectacular. Honestly none of the android options can even come close to how good Garageband works on iOS. If you really want to make music on mobile, Apple is the best option. You could legitimately create an album with Garageband if you wanted to. If you want to make purely electronic music, G-Stomper on Android works great, but it's not really for recording instruments.
@@demonicsweaters While I'm not really much of a cheerleader for Apple anything, Garageband is one of the best apps I've used. I'm mostly looking for experimentation purposes. I've tried getting JACK working with linux with mixed results (heartbreaking). If you don't mind my asking, what was/is the biggest problem with the Android apps? I've frequently heard latency is a huge bottleneck, particularly with the lower-end hardware. I appreciate your insight. Thank you!
@@aafjeyakubu5124 Yeah, latency is generally very bad, also distorted audio input if you use the built-in device. Also, instability seems to be an issue.
@Jason Hackney just chiming in a little. Demonic sweaters is right performance wise it will be very tough to get android to play right with latency issues......unless you use an audio interface with it. The 2 best apps i have used is bandlab and fl studio mobile.

Sorry to bother you man, but I am trying to make this work in Cubase. I did everything you said. Td-17 is set to Generic. I have created different kits on the Td-17 and lowered everything but 1 sound on each. It worked fine to record the whole kit to a stereo track in Cubase as well as to a midi track. But now when I change the midi track to output Td-17 and set it to Chanel 10, then record enable the kick audio track that I have created in Cubase (set to input1/2 as I have the Td-17 conected to input 1 and 2 on my UAD Apollo Solo interface), and change to the kick kit on the TD-17. But when I hit record no audio is being recorded to the kick audio track. Do I have to change the Td-17 Usb setting from generic when I am about to record onto the kick audio track in Cubase, or any idea what I might be doing wrong? Would really apreciate it.
did you confirm the midi output is working? Also, Generic is MIDI only, Vendor is audio and MIDI
And when using vendor you need to install the driver from Roland
@@demonicsweatersIt worked now when I changed the TD-17 back to Vendor before the last step of recording the separate kick and other sound from the midi track in the DAW to the td-17 and back to the DAW as audio. You never specify in the video that you have to change back to vendor before the last steps so I presumed I should just leave it on Generic through the whole process. Maybe you could just add that detail to the video or write it in the description?:) Anyway, thanks man!
@@thorvelizelos I didn't do it that way, I was using Generic the whole time. I think though you can actually use Vendor the whole time. At the time of making this video I didn't realize vendor did audio and MIDI simultaneously.

Hey buddy, great video. Very useful. Do you know if this would work on garage band on iOS? (Mac book). I can’t see how to send audio back via midi. Any help will be grateful.
Unfortunately GarageBand can’t do midi out, only midi in. I haven’t tried it, but the new Logic Pro for iOS may do it.

Any Reaper users know how to play the MIDI back to the module to record each individual track in Reaper? Can’t figure out how to do it.
I’m going to suss this out soon. I’m thinking right click track panel the click add new instrument /midi instrument , then route it to the td17 or input 10 or some shiz , I’m still wrapping my head around this though , if I’d know it was gonna be this difficult I wouldn’t have wasted 3 k on the td17 and just shelled out and gotten the 27 or 50 because the only reason I wanted a Roland was to record out to my daw then mix from there 🤦♂️

Hi mate. I’m a bit late to respond! You might have figured it out by now. All you have to do is go into the routes in the faders and under midi hardware output select td17. Just below it select send to channel 10.

You’re essentially re-amping your midi. Seems time consuming, but effective
Instead of making copies for each drum part in the td-17 (i.e. kick, snare, etc.), it's WAY faster to just make copies of the midi track, and then for each drum part just delete the midi notes of the drums you don't want. That way there's no midi triggering the drums you don't want to hear

Why not copy MIDI track as many times as you need and copy the midi notes corresponding??
Because those MIDI notes have to be linked to the sounds generated by the module : inside the module, there's a function that allow you to make a perfect clone-copy of both audio and MIDI datas, and to replay that copy and scroll through your patches to change the sound of the kit. So, if you create a copy of the kit for each individual track you want and mute everything else but kick, snare, etc, and then *replay the recording of the take that's in the memory of your module*, it will record the *audio* of only the snare on the snare patch with everything else muted. So then you just have to create a new track for the snare, and replay the take from the module. And... boom!! The snare is now on a separate track. Wants a new snare??? Create a bunch of snare only presets, and switch sound seamlessly in the baffled face of your client. Do the same for the kick, and if they ask for anything else, do it as well. Add in all separate tracks for the mixing engineer. Now, you have both audio AND midi datas, for the "reference track" (overheads) AND for all individual tracks.... GENIUS.

That would totally work. Just make sure you’re only sending one midi track at a time over usb.
If I would follow your approach ... I just would mute all MIDI data and solo only the drum instrument I am interested in (e.g. only snare, only kick drum, only Hi-Hat, etc.) But, and anyway, I hope I find something smarter soon ... cause, there must be something better out there ... to accomplish the same result ...

In summary what is the goal?
I already use the td17 kv with usb output and use the sounds of LOGIC (SOCAL ECC) but I must say that compared to the TD17 with the sounds of your library introduces a bit of latency.

Why not edit the midi file in your DAW? You could just delete everything but the snare for example. Seems like an easier way to do it.

You could do this on a TD-5 too using the MIDI Din connections.

@@demonicsweaters Can you do this on a TD-9? Cuz of the pandemic I can't access my acoustic drums no more, too many problems with renting a space. I spent over a decade programming my TD-9 back when it was the #1 - still is for a lot of drummers touring for pads - and I really need to be able to output multiple tracks for clients.
Great workaround but way to time consuming and cumbersome. Any other way to do it via s/w perhaps? I hope Roland gives us the feature via a new s/w rev in the future...
No.. if you want separate outputs, you need to spend another $1500 on a TD27. Roland did it on purpose so pros would have to save up and buy the 27. The 17 is aimed at people practicing at home. It’s Roland’s greed; they could have included that functionality but they left it out on purpose.
