If you want a stereo file to line up with your midi (fail safe to check your audio against the midi) use the L&R inputs from that audio interface. Set up a stereo track along with your midi track and arm it to record... I do it all the time (as a reference track) to make sure my midi matches with what the drummer plays. It also helps if there are ghostnotes triggering additional notes that are unwanted
Finally, a video which shows what I was looking for. Have you tried another DAW? I am in a home studio project (and budget), so, would you please recommend a nice but simple MIDI interface? I have seen that the cheapest MIDI cable around there, doesn’t work very well. Thanks a lot.
Unfortunate I have only tried Logic Pro X since it’s the only DAW I actually know anything about! Sorry about that! A simple midi interface can be found in the focusrite Scarlett line up. Really well priced and work really well!

Holy cow this is awesome! Great video! I've got a cheap Alesis Turbo I use to practice while my acoustic is in Seattle. I've just started into midi and it is daunting! So much hardship just to record. I'm having a problem with the hat triggering the right sound with pedal operation. It looks like it isn't an issue in SD? Or should I be able to map any drum VST to make the right sound at the moment of operation (vice getting the right open or closed hi-hat sound in post)?
Hello and thanks for your comment! So midi mapping is normally required for most electronic drum kits (especially with the hi hat). If you search 'midi mapping in VST' or 'Hi Hat Triggering Superior Drummer', chances are you'll be greeted by many great videos explaining how to get the trigger response smoother. This is great detailed information. I have a couple of questions. When you were gigging, did you use edrums or acoustic drums. If and when you used edrums live, did you use software or the module. Was latency an issue... again great info, I appreciate you posting this. I finally broke down and got a new computer this year so it may be time for me to start learning to use software. The first time I used the module sounds, and the second time I brought a laptop out with me and used superior drummer. Latency wasn't an issue that time! Ah that's great - let me know how you get on!

Dude... Many interfaces are made with midi in/out. Using a USB midi cable is a horrible idea. The interface isn't just a fancy place to plugin your headphones. It also facilitates low latency playback while tracking, gives you outputs to connect monitor speakers and it gives you mic pre's and Hi-Z inputs to record vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, whatever. For all those looking for info on a setup, buy an interface with midi in/out. Don't waste money on a mid to USB cable. You can add more to the system later on in the form of: studio monitor speakers (you can buy them 1 at a time), monitoring headphones for tracking (DT770's are a good choice), a microphone, etc.

The most important aspects are the features you need. If you may use midi drums/keys/etc in future, get a midi input. If you plan to reamp, you may need more than 2 outputs - one to send audio. You may record guitars with plugins, which would require Hi-z inputs. You may record vocals and need better quality preamps - although I personally believe this to be myth because most people don't overdrive their pre's to utilise the particular pre's character. I don't have the usb thing in my drums so I can directly plug it into my computer, I am getting sound a signal while going with an tele- cabel ( telecommunication cable) don't know what it's called in english. My problem is that everythings seem fine but it is recording everything instead of just the drums, so when i play the drums the guitar is in the same track for example.

How would I record an electronic kit if I want to record with MIDI but also the kit's own sounds, separated by track, e.g., kick, snare, toms on their own channel. The Alesis Strike Pro SE has separate outputs for all of the various triggers. Thanks!

No latency at all! Bearing in mind latency comes down to the module you’re using as well. Roland modules have the lowest latency on the market I believe 👍🏻
Hoping someone can help me troubleshoot a problem I'm having recording midi drums from my kit - but this video is 2 years old (and Josh has apparently moved on to a different hobby), so it's not likely anyone will read this... First, my setup: I am using an A2E kit (acoustic kit converted to electronic - Gretsch Catalina with Jobeky internal side mount dual triggers and Remo Silentstroke mesh heads) with the Alesis Strike module - midi out to a Focusrite Scarlett 1818 and Superior Drummer 3 in Studio One DAW. When I record midi into the DAW's timeline, I see several extra midi notes of lower velocity following the initial strike on the track These notes only appear on the snare and floor tom (rack tom and kick seem to react just fine) and are likely due to vibrations of the head. I have the mesh heads pitched pretty tight and even used some gaffing tape to subdue overtones, but I still get the (almost inaudible) multiple strikes. I have the retrigger and threshold settings adjusted properly in the Strike module to allow for realistic playing and cannot reduce them much more without sacrificing playability. Is it the single ply mesh heads causing the issue? Has anyone experienced a similar problem and found a solution?
I’m stuck for some reason. I have the USB AB cable to connected to my module and my computer, I’m pretty sure I have my module driver downloaded (Alesis is weird), and I’m using audacity. I can get any audio from my module to playback on my computer
Hey Josh, a big reason I would want to set something up like this is to improve the drum sound quality not only in a recording, but as I play live (in my room using headphones). By using a VST and listening to the input through my computer, is this something I can feasibly use to have great sound on my drums while playing them? Or would latency be too much of an issue and this technology is only used in the recording itself? Thanks for the video!
Hi Lucas and thanks for your comment. The VST will 100% give you a better drum sound with minimal lag. Ever since I was introduced to the world of VST's, I stopped using the internal module sounds all together... even when I was just practicing. It's one of those things that when you're introduced to it, your entire world changes!

Hi there, thank you for your comment! I'm not actually too sure how you do that one. It would depend on the number of outputs you have on the back of the module I believe!
This can be tricky without individual outputs, but not impossible!... What you can do is record the MIDI into your DAW and then playback each drum track in solo and simultaneously record the drum module audio output - for example, record a performance so that you have it in MIDI then create a stereo audio input... Solo your first drum track in your DAW, i.e the kick. When you play this kick, you can route it to play back on your drum module, like you would a synthesizer sound module - then just record the module output in real time and repeat for each drum/cymbal!
I too would like to record the midi info but hear my module's sounds. So far demonic sweater's example of recording both midi and audio at the same time is as close as I've seen. But I wonder if importing samples from module to laptop is going to be the ultimate answer.
Does this method use the sounds that are with the Roland kit? Or does it use Logics kit sounds? I really want to just use the actual sounds from my Roland device as they’re much better.
Can i use HP ElitePad 1000 G2 Tablet for VST ezdrummer and record? This tablet needs usb Adapter, is there possible to be any lag because of HP usb adapter? Nice video!

Hi Jay, thanks for the comment and sincerest apologies for the delay in responding to your question. I’ve messed with usb cables and midi cables before.... your best bet is a USB/printer cable if possible. It just seems to work straight away without no messing around and gives more consistent results (from my experiences at least!)
Midi cables give you better chance at synchronization considering you can accept MTC directly into the DAW and use a vst plugin I'm the software for the drums.
The #1 thing I hate about triggering sounds with electronic drums ? IS the moment you do it, you loose the multi trigger sounds and it takes you back to single zone sounding and feeling drums. Very annoying. Somehow this needs to be fixed or it will never be as useful as acoustics.
I get what you mean, and I agree with you there. Sometimes you lose that layer of realism when using the kit in this way, but for the most part i'm able to do what I want with it!

I want to be able to record from my TD11 into GarageBand on an iPad; I’ve seen videos of people connecting straight in with the camera connector but when I try that I don’t get the drums triggering any sounds. Can you tell me how to do this? I like the mobility of recording on the iPad and mixing on my Mac afterwards.

Hey! Is there a way to monitor a Logic drum set VST by using an Alesis drum amp instead of monitoring what I'm playing through headphones? That would be cool if that's possible! When I record threw cords. I play with headphones on. Which helps to dock and drown out the outside distraction. But when I listen to the recording I hear the sound of the sticks hitting the pads.
Just picked up my first electric kit today. I'm going to use this process for recording but how am I able to listen to the song I want to play along to and record at the same time? Looking to do this for drum covers.
Is it better to record directly from the brain td27 via usb on the pc or to record with the sound card (M audio) by connecting the brain td27 with two jack cables (left, right) from the main out to the sound card line1, line 2 and from the sound card via usb to the pc? What do you suggest;

These notes only appear on the snare and floor tom (rack tom and kick seem to react just fine) and are likely due to vibrations of the head. I have the mesh heads pitched pretty tight and even used some gaffing tape to subdue overtones, but I still get the (almost inaudible) multiple strikes.
I have the retrigger and threshold settings adjusted properly in the Strike module to allow for realistic playing and cannot reduce them much more without sacrificing playability.
Is it the single ply mesh heads causing the issue?
Has anyone experienced a similar problem and found a solution?
In my Roland kit module the drums sound different from the drumkit i hit on pc. What gives? I followed your instructions
I’m stuck for some reason. I have the USB AB cable to connected to my module and my computer, I’m pretty sure I have my module driver downloaded (Alesis is weird), and I’m using audacity. I can get any audio from my module to playback on my computer
And how does the recording works if I don´t want to use any VST?
Hey Josh, a big reason I would want to set something up like this is to improve the drum sound quality not only in a recording, but as I play live (in my room using headphones). By using a VST and listening to the input through my computer, is this something I can feasibly use to have great sound on my drums while playing them? Or would latency be too much of an issue and this technology is only used in the recording itself? Thanks for the video!
Hi Lucas and thanks for your comment. The VST will 100% give you a better drum sound with minimal lag. Ever since I was introduced to the world of VST's, I stopped using the internal module sounds all together... even when I was just practicing.
It's one of those things that when you're introduced to it, your entire world changes!
Great video! Are you able to individually export each microphone as a separate audio file if sending for an online session? Like you would if recording an acoustic kit with mics through an interface. Thanks!
I'm pretty sure you could do that if you assigned each mic to it's own separate track inside of the recording software you choose to use!

Thank you for the video. What i understand is that we can get various drum sounds from Superior Drums. How can we get the sounds of the inbuilt drum kits of the actual module of E Drums in our DAW as multi tracks?
Hi there, thank you for your comment! I'm not actually too sure how you do that one. It would depend on the number of outputs you have on the back of the module I believe!
This can be tricky without individual outputs, but not impossible!... What you can do is record the MIDI into your DAW and then playback each drum track in solo and simultaneously record the drum module audio output - for example, record a performance so that you have it in MIDI then create a stereo audio input... Solo your first drum track in your DAW, i.e the kick. When you play this kick, you can route it to play back on your drum module, like you would a synthesizer sound module - then just record the module output in real time and repeat for each drum/cymbal!
I too would like to record the midi info but hear my module's sounds. So far demonic sweater's example of recording both midi and audio at the same time is as close as I've seen. But I wonder if importing samples from module to laptop is going to be the ultimate answer.

You can run an SPD as a separate audio or midi instrument in your DAW :D

Josh, thanks for doing a video like this. Quick one: does a MIDI cable work the same as a USB cable? My interface has both options, so I'm just curious if there are any advantages to using either cable.
Hi Jay, thanks for the comment and sincerest apologies for the delay in responding to your question. I’ve messed with usb cables and midi cables before.... your best bet is a USB/printer cable if possible. It just seems to work straight away without no messing around and gives more consistent results (from my experiences at least!)
Midi cables give you better chance at synchronization considering you can accept MTC directly into the DAW and use a vst plugin I'm the software for the drums.

The #1 thing I hate about triggering sounds with electronic drums ? IS the moment you do it, you loose the multi trigger sounds and it takes you back to single zone sounding and feeling drums. Very annoying. Somehow this needs to be fixed or it will never be as useful as acoustics.
I get what you mean, and I agree with you there. Sometimes you lose that layer of realism when using the kit in this way, but for the most part i'm able to do what I want with it!

I want to be able to record from my TD11 into GarageBand on an iPad; I’ve seen videos of people connecting straight in with the camera connector but when I try that I don’t get the drums triggering any sounds. Can you tell me how to do this? I like the mobility of recording on the iPad and mixing on my Mac afterwards.

Hey! Is there a way to monitor a Logic drum set VST by using an Alesis drum amp instead of monitoring what I'm playing through headphones? That would be cool if that's possible! When I record threw cords. I play with headphones on. Which helps to dock and drown out the outside distraction. But when I listen to the recording I hear the sound of the sticks hitting the pads.
Are you layering video over it? Maybe it’s the audio from the video recording?

Is it better to record directly from the brain td27 via usb on the pc or to record with the sound card (M audio) by connecting the brain td27 with two jack cables (left, right) from the main out to the sound card line1, line 2 and from the sound card via usb to the pc? What do you suggest;

Hi Josh. I just had the thought. Would the midi notes have different volumes if I was to record directly from the module? I just found the cymbals on the mt powerdrumkit program i used were a bit quiet. I started to think I was better off recording straight from the td50 module
You can always change the volume of each sound you’re triggering inside the VST software!
I tried it but using garage band instead becuz I’m broke, but it did not work. Not sure if I did something or garage band doesn’t support it.
