I learnt never let the flame touch the flux or solder and always draw the solder to the heat, not away. Once I learnt these points, my soldering has improved triple fold.

I think I’d agree, mostly. Even when you see me soldering a circle (bottom or top) my flame generally sits next / slightly ahead of where I’m soldering. It’s the same concept in that the flame isn’t touching the rod or directly touching the area I’m soldering.
I’ve gotten many comments on this how “I’m suppose to do it” cause it doesn’t appear I’m drawing to solder towards the heat. But I’d argue I am, just not in a traditional way.
If you’re talking about heating an area no greater that a half a dollar bill size in any given moment (in the heating / soldering process) you’re still bringing that area to melting point temps. Specifically on flat surface areas.
Plumbing and solder pipe and fittings. Different story. However, I’m not professionally trained so it’s just an opinion based on my experience. I’ve formed my own ways of doing things and all I can say is they’re efficient. I’ve not had any leak issues.
The basis of what you mentioned though, I agree.

Where are you located? I've cobbled some beer keg boilers and pipe bubblers, but would love to learn that copper fab!
