Real Time Soldering - The Collar
The collar is the joint where the boiler connects to the helmet or column, ensuring a tight seal and smooth vapor flow. It’s critical for #distillation #efficiency , #safety and modularity. Serving as a transition point for vapor to move from the boiler to the next stage of the still.
Key Points FYI:
•Connection Type: CopperStillCo uses 6-inch Tri-Clamps for “Distiller Sets,” offering easy assembly, cleaning, and compatibility with upgrades.
•Seal Quality: Look for vapor-tight, durable designs.
•Ease of Maintenance: Ensure it allows for proper cleaning and long-term reliability.
•Compatibility: Verify it supports additional components like columns or dephlegmators.
CopperStillCo’s high-quality craftsmanship ensures precision, durability, and optimal distillation performance.
We craft top-quality copper stills using the finest materials and true artisan skill. Just like a fine spirit, it’s all about the craftsmanship and attention to detail that go into every step of the process. From the way each joint is soldered to the perfect curve of the cooling worm, the quality speaks for itself. You can see it, feel it, and when you fire it up, you’ll know it works as good as it looks. Around here, we don’t say our stills are the best-the proof is in the still.

Here’s another step in our build process: soldering the 4-inch fruit port onto the top of the thumper. At CopperStillCo, every still with a thumper includes a 4-inch fruit port as a standard feature. A fruit port on a thumper is a dedicated opening that allows you to easily add ingredients, such as fruits, herbs, or spices, without dismantling the setup during a run. Here’s what it’s for: 1. Why do you use solder instead of copper?
@@oops8985 it’s simply how I learned, time efficient and the strength of solder is quite ridiculous. Haven’t found a reason to not use solder.

Actually your doing it wrong. You were sticking your solder under the flame. This melts the solder before the fittings are at proper temp. Heat the fittings first. Remove the flame. Add solder to the metal without the flame. Solder will flow when the metal is at the right temperature. You want to sweat the solder into the fitting to make it watertight. Putting a bead of solder around the joint is mildly interesting however doesn’t make it watertight. Worked in the stainless steel industry making commercial kitchen equipment for over 45 years & never had any of my solder joints leak.
@@motorpapa3446 I’ll play with that technique. Thus far, 11 years and haven’t had any leak issues doing it this way. But commercial industry is going to be a lot different than hobbyist still units. And I’m self taught so I have no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ simply what works and has been tried and true. You ought to make a video demonstrating the right way. I’d love to see it!
@@motorpapa3446 also, I’m not quite sure what you mean by my flame being under the solder. I pre heat it all, focusing on the pipe mostly, first. Apply the solder to the pipe, flux it again then focus my heat more so I’m the stainless. Drawing that solder onto the lip and into the fitting. That was to simplify it for someone trying to do this at home. Many times it’ll take to it all right away.
Been doing this since the 70’s when I went thru sheet metal apprentice program. Learning to solder was one of the first things you learned. Soldered 100’s of brass drains in stainless steel sinks. Soldered all kinds of different metals together. All the pipes & fittings we made by hand had to be soldered at the end. Nothing new here.
@@motorpapa3446 nice! Sounds fun to me! This video is aimed towards the moonshiner community and / or people who don’t necessarily have the ‘knowledge’ is this kind of work. Shit… I don’t even have broad ‘knowledge’ only what I’ve self taught. It’s clear in this community that for whatever reason people read or heard you can’t do this or at the very least you cannot do it without special solder/flux. But yeah, for anyone who in this trade or have gone through an apprentice program. I’m sure it’s nothing new. Thanks for watching and commenting. Merry Christmas. 🎁🎄
Absolute work of art. Bravo 🇺🇲💯💪
Hi! What flux is used to join copper and stainless steel?
Just a standard white paste flux. Harris Water Soluble to be exact. No special solder or flux needed for this particular application.
Hell yeah, Brother 💯 💪 🇺🇲
🤘🤘🤘
Nice
Thanks 👍
Not if you are soldering stainless expansion valves or solenoid valves to copper in HVAC/R systems. The flux needs to be removed from inside the tubing / fittings and the soldering job has to be done very fast. Use an eutectic rod instead. For larger joints, use the eutectic rod for a root pass and finish with 15% silver solder.
Butiful work

@copperstillco yes they just offered to sell me another still so I kind of gave up lol... I just struggle through it. Bought it before last winter so like a year ago.
why are they called thumpers and what is their job ?
@@brenohighland3259 The name “thumper” comes from the sound it makes during distillation. As the vapor enters the liquid inside, it creates a rhythmic “thumping” noise caused by bubbling and pressure changes. It has several purposes -Double Distillation: It allows the alcohol vapor from the boiler to re-condense and re-vaporize, effectively distilling it a second time for higher proof. -Infusion of Flavors: You can add fruits, herbs, or other ingredients to the thumper to infuse additional flavors into the final product. -Temperature Stabilization: The thumper helps maintain consistent temperatures and pressure during distillation. -Efficiency: It captures and reuses heat from the alcohol vapors, reducing the need for additional energy.
@@brenohighland3259 it’ll also catch any ‘puking’ accidents from the boiler. There’s actually something called a slobber box that looks just like a thumper but it’s plumbed differently.
Very cool!
So awesome!
Wow..
Beautiful work and craftsmanship!
Why is it called a thumper?
@@paulkurilecz4209 because it makes a knocking or thump noise while it’s operating.

Damn Y'all. That's a a hell of a still!
I am from Iran. You make art. Besides copper, I use a combination alloy of copper and zinc (70% copper - 30% zinc), which is called brass. Because it has more resistance. Of course, I also use copper, especially in the condenser. Good Luck
Copper may not be the most practical but it is definitely the most pretty. The stainless fittings makes it all work out just fine! Well done. Please please stop pushing mason jars in the vapor line. It only takes one alcohol vapor fire to kill someone.
@@robertfontaine3650 thank you, cleaning and overall upkeep is definitely more challenging overall. But much nicer to look at. One looks like art where the stainless rigs are more factory manufactured. As far as the jars are concerned. Every system has a pressure relief valve that pops off at 5psi. A still rarely reaches that. But if the system happens to get clogged the safety valve is in place. I have yet to hear of any issues with jar rigs outside of people dropping them. But if I find that it’s creating a consistent safety problem. I’ll certainly stop offering them. As of now, all seems fine :)
@@copperstillco When you make preserves occasionally a jar will crack when you boil it. These are not safety glass. When a jar cracks with alcohol steam and you are working on the still the best case is first degree steam burns the worst case is an alcohol vapor fire. There are plenty of safe ways of making gin baskets and bubblers. This is absolutely not one of them.
@@robertfontaine3650 if you’re able, send me some info. I’m interested in looking at some other options. Are you connected to my Facebook or TikTok ? How could we connect ?
@@copperstillco I'm not much of a welder so I use sanitary spool; 3" short tee with a sight glass. I'm sure you can braze or tig up a nice copper piece using an 3" sight glass that would sell very well with your other sexy pieces. Sight glass polycarbonate is very thick.
