Great video! So true I agree! I’ve been taking photos since 1994, used to work as a wedding photographe back in the day, and have tried many films and cameras (digital and analogue) over the years. I’ve had Leica film cameras too (mp, m2, M6 x3). The closest digital camera I have used to film is The M9. This was fun to watch! Bought one of the first M9 and used it for 10-years with joy. The ONLY reason I sold it (had the sensor replaced) was that I got my ideal monochrom, and couldn’t afford/justify both (did end up with an SL for color and more modern). The monochrom, M9M, or whatever you want to call it, was my digit-film-like camera that is an endless roll of B&W, taking me back 40 years and my early Leica days.
I’m Robert, I’m a big fan of monochrome, but can’t afford it. I was wondering the m9m is ccd sensor as well. Does ccd monochrome sense produce better image quality than cmos monochrome senor? Thank you.
M9 for me is the best looking digital M and the closest to film M even more than M10. The reason is: -the frameline window -the lens release button is the same with film M -the hot shoe design is the same with film M -the frameline preview similar to the film M -the cut corner on the top plate makes the overall camera looks very similar to the film M -the black M9 is black paint instead of chrome so it will brass nicely like the film M
Be sure the sensor that has been replace with the second version of the sensor replacement. The first replacement will eventually corrode. This also applies to the Monochrom.
Nice to see someone point out that ISO isn't the fountain if youth for exposure. I swear I just saw someone ask in the A7c FB group why their ISO 12,000 images looked noisy 🤣
I moved from M8 to M-D Typ262, totally film-like experience. Whole heartedly recommend you to give it a try. The color from the 240 era is actually really good. :-)
I looked at the M9 for a while and ultimately decided to go with the M240 because I was scared of corrosion. I wanted the slower photography experience and didn't want to scan all of my negatives every time. I truly have zero regrets. My poor Fuji kit is collecting dust though.
@@GxAce I definitely agree with the steel grey. It's so beautiful. I get it on price, too. The M9 is much more affordable. The M240 was a huge splurge for me. I definitely don't have it like that. lol
When I get a GxAce notification, I don't watch it on my phone. I just go on my PC, turn off the lights and enjoy the experience on a big monitor. I even click on like before watching. I totally agree with you on the full frame thought: I'm bored of the crop factors just because I can't use my lenses at the intended focal length, it's also extremely hard to find good manual lenses with equivalent focal.
Hahahah thank you! I'm glad people take the time to sit down and watch it in the best way possible! Yes! So hard finding any older 16-17mm fast lenses :(
The M9 is leica's most game changing modern camera - outputting images that still compete in 2045. The only issue I had was carrying around as many batteries as I would rolls of film! Otherwise, I hope to be buried with this iconic beast. As aside-note, the production of the bulk of youtube videos needs to catch up to you my friend. Keep releasing when you need to, we seriously don't mind the wait.
Definitely an awesome camera! I remember watching Digital Rev's videos on it when it came out. I've actually found that the battery life is great! But I really don't shoot a ton when I take a camera with me unless I'm on a trip. Hahah, thanks so much! I really should make these faster but sometimes its hard to find motivation to shoot.
really appreciate your honesty - especially the end with the desire for fuji to have full frame to use the lens focal length to it's design purpose. (intended field of view as you said) quite spot on.
I pick and choose what video to watch on every channel but you Sir I watch every upload. Since first watching your Fuji X100 video. It reminded me of why I fell in love with the X20 years ago. I picked up last year a X100s.
I've had an M9 for years and would never sell it, despite the reds and greens being absolutely awful. Terrible for landscapes. But teamed with a Summilux 50mm f1.4 it does fantastic portraits, like no other camera can.
I found your channel at the beginning of this year, and, woah. I really like the concept you have, all of your videos are great, and original! Thank you and keep up the good work!
I bought an M9 back in 2009... It convinced me to never buy a Leica ever again. I had to send it in TWICE for problems/failures and after the second time (and before I might get the dreaded sensor rot) I decided to sell it and cut my losses. I LOVED some/most of the lenses and the way they rendered (but not the most modern ASPH lenses, they are way too nervous). I searched out good copies of the older Mandler-designed lenses for the most part. I really liked the way the sensor rendered, but it was a bit limited in its' abilities since it had such low DR. But what it did do, it did well. The camera had a shutter failure and it scratched the sensor cover glass. Then, the photosensors that read the lens codes failed... This all happened in the first 1,5 years of owning it. Through it all, the VF was crooked and they never fixed that, so I found myslef having to "correct" for the crooked VF on every shot. When I got it back the second time, I started hearing about people getting the sensor rot problem and I decided I couldn't deal with it anymore. What a complete failure of a camera. Life's too short to deal with absolute crap cameras, even if the lenses were really great.
The Leica M11 doesn't have the light meter poking out the way previous digital Ms do, so your Dual Range Summicron will work fine on it. And you can use an M11 above ISO 1600.
Big fan of your style, I love the fact that you're not shooting bricks or models, you made me realise how important it is to find beauty in ordinary things, besides the outstanding production quality of your videos I'm always eager to see your shoots!
As an avid film shooter (who also hates scanning and now starting to hate developing), I've learned to accept the crop sensor focal lengths and just go with Fuji as it's easily the best SOOC scenario we currently have ...but yes, if the XPro line were full frame, that would be amazing. Excellent content as usual.
For sure! I'm still wanting to pick up an X-Pro 3 again despite the crop factor, its such a fun camera. I prefer AF for street style shooting anyway as its a bit faster and I can shoot without looking at the viewfinder or screen to be sneaky a little more easily with AF.
As a former M9 owner, I think you covered it well. It can be quite buggy if you're using a memory card that isn't fully supported (yes, I've lost pictures because of it). Also it can be frustrating having to wake up the camera, as a street photographer, a film Leica is much more responsive (the M9 never was a fast camera, even when launched). And, make sure you carry at least 2 extra batteries on a day of shooting. Treat it like a digital film camera, try not to chimp between shots. Finally, the CCD raws can be massaged, but not to the extend of modern CMOS sensors. It's kind of like shooting slide film, blown highlights can be a problem.
Hallo GX Ace, greetings from Germany, Wetzlar Land. And welcome to the M9 Club. People rave about the colors of the Kodak sensor because it has a unique pale palette from what I see biasing a bit to magenta. In 2009 this was unique and nice, today I totally agree that FUJI color science is more punchy. But besides that, I sold all my FUJI stuff for a Leica M9 with several 7Artisans and TTartisan lens. Don't ask me why, I feel more relaxed with this combo, and the DNGs hold up to modern standards more than very well. A different approach though. Did you use DNG or JPG? Last comment to the sensor issue: Colari does not change the sensor unit, they change the filter glass in front of it that is prone to corrosion if not changed. So this surgery does not mean a change to color output, what is very nice, in my opinion. Stay true to your inspiring channel!
Wow. You new video is awesome from the narrative to the music. I love how you transport the feelings behind the gear and your calm voice is bliss in times of shouting out something with SQUARESP### :-) After putting the GlimmerGlas on my GFX 50R it feels like film. I also had some trouble with that whole scanning process and fully agree with you.
@@GxAce I enjoy the style and the analogue sound that adds some Bladerunner to the game making the whole thing more futuristic what emphasizes the hidden beauty of photography and the tools behind it. You show the community how to make a video that is a little piece of art itself.
I have an M8 and love it for all the same reasons of it being like a film camera. I also bought a leather case from Luigi Cases on eBay. A guy in Italy that hand makes a ton of cases and his cases for the M8 and M9 have a removable flap to cover the rear screen. I like the flap because it makes the camera feel like a film camera even more. I never check the screen and just know weather or not I got the shot. Plus it help protect the screen from getting scratched.
@@GxAce I recommend his stuff the one I have is really nice. His eBay seems the easiest way to get one, but you can email him through his website to get one and pick the options for a grip, strap, and leather yourself.

Awesome! I'm planning on doing a video soon about replicating the look of the XPan on the M9/M6 and other mirrorless cameras! The X-Pan is so cool (also I plan on making a review of that too, just need to be able to travel again and get some more cool shots)
I would love for you to talk more about your technique, color, lighting etc. Of course, maybe you don't want to reveal all your tricks. But that would be some really interesting content for sure! You have a really interesting style and I don't think it is all down to Lightroom skills!?
I'm definitely planning on it! I've been focusing on gear reviews as they usually get more views. My plan is to grow the channel first before I start making more interesting videos :) I'd rather put the effort into those kinds of videos once I have a larger audience!
Hopefully your original CCD sensor will last since Leica no longer replaces it. That said, I am actually considering getting one with a new sensor to enjoy that rich Kodachrome color. Thanks for the nice video.
I stopped shooting 35mm film once I picked up my X100v and just shoot medium format now. Same reasoning around scanning. Also shoutout to the minidisc player 😎
Good thinking. Like this! I'm 65 and started a lifelong love affair with photography 1969. I feel that I've developed enough film in my life, and scanning film is not fun. I have a lot. The point is, for me at least: I just cannot see any meaning with analog photography without an enlarger! To make inkjet prints from a scanned negative is like I don't know what... If there is a magic process somewhere in photography it is copying and developing. If we scan analog prints, then we are talking. (I don't have a darkroom so I have no choice). I've owned an M9 and sold it to buy an M (typ 240 I think it's called in Wetzlar) because live view is necessary for things like macro photography. The difference is neglible, as long as you don't make videos, which is of historical resolution.
Your videos are freaking dangerous for me man. 😂 bought the X-Pro3 on your recommendation, LOVE IT, now you have me feelin these M9 vibes like crazy. Actually though, very good to hear about the DR Summicron Rigid. I’ve been looking at getting that as my 50mm option for my M3.
Hahaha sorry sorry. Well if it makes you feel any better I'm really wanting an X-Pro 3 again hahah. I had a loaner from fuji for like 6 months and then bought one when I had to send it back and the one I got from Amazon had a broken screen, but since I barely use the screen I kept it until the 30 day return was over and returned it haha. Now I wish I still had it because its so much fun. Why can't we all just have infinite money and cameras?
completely agree. i think Leica needs to stop chasing performance, that's the market for Sony and Canon. Stop releasing another "limited edition" M10, and Just give us what we want, a CCD sensor camera. For all i care they can re-release an M9 (with sensor corrition fixed, better LCD), And I'll be all over it.
My M9 is almost 11 years old and still producing beautiful images. With the Zeiss C Sonnar for portraits with character, and the Distagon for environmental portraits and reportage, it's a kit that will produce a unique high quality look for many years. Hint: Lightroom will produce gorgeous raw conversions, don't bother with the jpegs.
I completely understand. I stopped shooting 35mm after I bought my Ricoh GRiii, now I have the GRiiiX as well. Scanning 35mm is so very inconvenient especially if the film curls or not enough time in the fixer giving you that cloudy look. I still shoot film only in medium format but Fuji gfx cameras are becoming more affordable so eventually I’ll stop shooting 120 film but I’ll never sell my Pentax 67ii or hassleblad .
You share some of my very recent views. I am using my FX Nikon to shoot color, instead of shooting 35mm color film. The time spent scanning 35mm color is in my opinion, boring, time consuming, it wears out the scanner, color 35mm film is getting expensive, developing color is tedious and time consuming, printing from color is also very tedious, and a full frame color digital image is on par with 35mm color film. As for film, I am using that for my medium format and 4x5 as there is an advantage with the larger negative. Very good points in your video.
Without the Sensor replaced is an expensive ticking time bomb, furthermore those 3rd parties offering replacement CCD cover glass fix may or may not reproduce the colour characteristics as intended
People usually say the M240 has the least pleasing output (between M9, M240 and M10)...I think the M240 has the best output. I compared it also side by side to x100v and fuji is nowhere near. Only in high iso (2500 +) the fuji gains some advantage. But in daylight, M240 delivers strong as hell.
Amazing as always. I am definetly planing on getting a digital M myself. I just never was sure which one is fot me. Somehow the M9 pictures have something organic to them though. So I might go for that one after all.

@@GxAce how do like the M9 compared to the Fuji x100v?
The reason is:
-the frameline window
-the lens release button is the same with film M
-the hot shoe design is the same with film M
-the frameline preview similar to the film M
-the cut corner on the top plate makes the overall camera looks very similar to the film M
-the black M9 is black paint instead of chrome so it will brass nicely like the film M
you have the most visually impressive videos on TH-cam! great camera, even better video!
The black and whites come out so nice on this CCD sensor, even as jpegs straight out of the camera.
Need to play around with that! I've mostly only shot RAW on this camera.
@@GxAce shoot jpeg in BW with high contrast ♥️ will love it
as soon as i heard those synths in intro i've smashed that like button!
Casey you went to a new level on this! You can tell there is so much thought going into these videos.
Thanks so much!! I'm glad the extra effort isn't going to waste haha
I moved from M8 to M-D Typ262, totally film-like experience. Whole heartedly recommend you to give it a try. The color from the 240 era is actually really good. :-)
This video was wonderful. I love the cinematic review. First class. Excellent work!
I looked at the M9 for a while and ultimately decided to go with the M240 because I was scared of corrosion. I wanted the slower photography experience and didn't want to scan all of my negatives every time. I truly have zero regrets. My poor Fuji kit is collecting dust though.
I was being cheap and went for the one that cost less haha. Plus I like the steel grey color.
Wow this is the highest production camera review I have ever seen. Incredible work!
really appreciate your honesty - especially the end with the desire for fuji to have full frame to use the lens focal length to it's design purpose. (intended field of view as you said) quite spot on.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
I pick and choose what video to watch on every channel but you Sir I watch every upload.
Since first watching your Fuji X100 video. It reminded me of why I fell in love with the X20 years ago. I picked up last year a X100s.
Wow, thanks! I'm glad you keep coming back!
21k subs? That can’t be right. I’ll make it 21,001 then. You deserve much more with your production quality and skill. Glad I watched this. Thanks!
I've had an M9 for years and would never sell it, despite the reds and greens being absolutely awful. Terrible for landscapes. But teamed with a Summilux 50mm f1.4 it does fantastic portraits, like no other camera can.
Definitely an awesome older digital that's for sure.
The screen is absolutely horrendous but the files were pretty fun.
For sure!
I found your channel at the beginning of this year, and, woah. I really like the concept you have, all of your videos are great, and original! Thank you and keep up the good work!
I honestly watch your videos because how beautiful you make them
Thanks so much!
Life's too short to deal with absolute crap cameras, even if the lenses were really great.
that ambience, the feels.. as always great video man!
Appreciate it!
my guy, your work is too good to ONLY have 21k subs. phenomenal video man
Dude your production quality is insane!
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching!
Wow! Thanks so much! Yeah a lot of photo channels have really boring sample photos.
I always pick some popcorn to see these videos 🙌🏻.
Hope you enjoy!!
@@GxAce Same, I will pick up another some day as I traded mine away for the X-T4 some time ago. Such a gorgeous cam.
Dude, you are by far my favorite photography TH-camr. Regards from the Phoblographer!
The production value of this channel is totally insane ✨🚀🔥
Given these amazing intros, you should be doing the actual official promos for these products!
Hahah. I'd be down.
it's the best camera I've ever owned. the lenses are the perfect fit to me. absolute perfection.
Wow. You new video is awesome from the narrative to the music. I love how you transport the feelings behind the gear and your calm voice is bliss in times of shouting out something with SQUARESP### :-)
After putting the GlimmerGlas on my GFX 50R it feels like film. I also had some trouble with that whole scanning process and fully agree with you.
Yeah, I can't stand most youtubers hahah. I'm not overly energetic. The Glimmer Glass is great! Thanks for watching!
@@GxAce I enjoy the style and the analogue sound that adds some Bladerunner to the game making the whole thing more futuristic what emphasizes the hidden beauty of photography and the tools behind it. You show the community how to make a video that is a little piece of art itself.
Your videos are always a treat to watch.
I'm so glad :)
Wow! I'll have to look up those cases! Seems like something I would love.
@@GxAce I recommend his stuff the one I have is really nice. His eBay seems the easiest way to get one, but you can email him through his website to get one and pick the options for a grip, strap, and leather yourself.
Another fantastic video, GxAce. I always look forward to seeing your work.
Thank you! Cheers!
amazing review as always! I recently bought x-pro1 + 7artisans 35mm f0.95 lens, really enjoy shooting like film camera, but it's crop sensor camera, and I glad u mentioned that M9 replaced you M6 film for that matter. Will check it out.
I keep coming to this channel for that sweet sweet cyberpunk feel to your channel ugh amazing
This guys 24 years ahead of us sheeesh
I love my Leica M typ 240. It brings me back to my film days growing up. I still shoot fuji and will never switch. But when I want the filmic experience I always reach for my Leica.
dude your stuff is freeking dope ! so cinematic ! if you get a chance to try a leica lens on this m9 try the summilux and you may be blown away by the leica colors
Thanks so much! I'm primarily using the 40mm Summicron on it now!
Another Masterpiece! The Ace ❤Love from South Africa 🇿🇦
i just got an M9 and im loving the experience so far sold my m6 as well to get this instead
I owned ME(M9 equiv.) for 6 years now, and also a XPAN user, I completely agree with your opioins on 35mm film. I sold my other 35mm film camers, however, the only exception is xpan
@@GxAce I am definitely in the same camp. I can throw money at gear but I am clueless when it comes to framing and technique.
@@GxAce Wow, that sounds super interesting! Really looking forward to that.
Scanning should be easier these days than it is... Mini disc is like the perfect sci-fi data medium hahah
man i really love this channel , great sfx , vfx , really like the vibe here !!, subbed
Thanks for sharing! I've unfortunately never had the pleasure of getting to optically print anything before but I would love to try at some point.
always the best and most unique reviews, great stuff
Much appreciated!
Very informative video, thanks. I read that the quality of the black and white pictures is particularly good, even better than the newer models.
completely agree. i think Leica needs to stop chasing performance, that's the market for Sony and Canon.
We need a tour of your studio/room!!!!
One day! haha. It's too embarrassingly low budget.
MAN THIS CHANNEL IS.... MINDBLOWING
It’s more like a mini movie, rather than review) great work as usual!!!
Thanks! I'm glad you like it! So you don't find the intro's too long and boring?
Probably won't buy a leica m9 but you're videos are always awesome and entertaining
Thank you so much!
i love your video style! anything that gives me space vibes i got time for
You share some of my very recent views.
Yeah, there really should be a better solution to the film process these days.
I always get so much inspiration watching your videos.
I'm so glad! It means a lot my friend!
I'm not even much of a camera guy but I love all your videos.
Wow! hahah. I'm glad you can find some enjoyment in them!
didn't know Dany Villeneuve made camera reviews !
I love this comment.
Hahahaha
Get a 50mm 1:1 macro lens and the Nikon ES-2 for scanning 35mm film. So quick and easy. Better results than a film scanner unless drum.
I love my M9. My sensor was replaced with the upgraded version that no longer corrodes. It will last me another 10 years!
Awesome!
Lucky guy
Without the Sensor replaced is an expensive ticking time bomb, furthermore those 3rd parties offering replacement CCD cover glass fix may or may not reproduce the colour characteristics as intended
Potentially. I've heard some people never have the issue, but I'm ok rolling the dice.
I bought the newest digital leica I could afford haha. I'd love to play with an M240 as well!
Amazing as always. I am definetly planing on getting a digital M myself. I just never was sure which one is fot me. Somehow the M9 pictures have something organic to them though. So I might go for that one after all.
Go for it! They are so much fun!
Love the lighting in your vids. So good man!
Appreciate it!
