Voila, it’s that easy 😊
Woah this is awesome! 3,750 total! And I’ve been at least 500 of them so far. WILD. This camera doesn’t have a scratch or scuff. Must have been a collectors.
@@davidherring That's brand new! My 8.2 chrome has just under 2,000. I use the M-E for everyday and M8.2 for the unique opportunities.
Bro, the M8 Colors have blown me away! Lovely
Right? I'm still recovering.
But the colors of the Nikon D50 are also great! And the 6 megapixel are more than enough for social even today
@@WorldinFastForward Yes, that's true, too. Absolutely beautiful colors. I had a D60 and I'm worried about I gave it away. It had a scorching 10MP.
Nice video!! Love the m8, use to have one and I missed her. You can check how many shoots it has.
After powering on the camera:
1) press the right button [inside the rear control dial] 4 times.
2) press the left button 3 times.
3) press the right button once more.
4) press info, you will then see a menu in small print.
5) scroll down (hitting bottom button) until you see Body Debug Data.
6) press set and scroll down until you see number of exposures (and the number taken).
All the info you need it’s there, more details in the leica forum.
Cheers front argentina!
3,750! CRAZY how low it is! Explains why this camera looks brand new. Thanks for the tip.
@@davidherring I just did the same with mine 3,573! and I have mine for at least a year now. Mine looked and still looks pristine, too. Wish you a lot of fun with yours I'm still not 100% convinced it's the one for me. The pictures I get are not like I would want them to be.
I love my Leica M8, even though the shutter is stuck and needs repair. I've used it since 2008 and always admired how it renders pictures, especially black and white shots. While considered the underdog of the M line, your video highlighted its punching power. The M8 may get hate, but its image quality won me over. Cant wait to see more of it on your channel
Amazing. Get that shutter fixed!
I also have an M8... and had a stuck shutter. I actually "fixed" mine by clicking the shutter release button while at the same time gently-ish banging the camera on to a semi hard surface like a stack of magazines. No guarantees it will work, but I had a repair quote from Leica that it would cost about $1000 USD to fix. Mine is now unstuck and has been working properly for months! Note: my M8 is not heavily used. I also purchased it very lightly used only about a year ago. Yes, it is a fantastic camera!
1. That M8 SOOC is beautiful!
2. Welcome to the DJI club! I love mine. It’s what I have used on all of my videos except for one.
Thanks bro! I changed a bunch of settings already. I think I have it more dialed in. Got a shoot a this weekend and I'm taking it with me.
I too have the M11 and have recently acquired an M8 which I LOVE! I’m using it far more than the M11 now and I also shoot 28mm with the IR cut filter. Great video to show those who don’t know how good that CCD sensor really is, who needs 60pmix 😆
Thanks for sharing!
I bought an M8, 17 years ago precisely because of the very film like images, especially in Black and White. Later I upgraded to an M9 Monochrom, followed by the Q2M (which I currently own and love). I sold my M9 Monochrom last year and recently picked up a used M8 in very good condition. So happy to have this camera back. It’s a pity that Kodak didn’t continue to develop their amazing CCD sensors. The M8 doesn’t disappoint, even 17 years later!
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Great video!! I totally prefer the M8 color science over the M11.
One mention, the M8 was the second digital M camera. To everyone's surprise, Epson (with help from Cosina) beat Leica to the punch by 2 years with the R-D1!!! Another absolutely amazing camera. 2004-2006 really was a special time for digital cameras.
Thanks for sharing!
Dave welcome to the club brother, I've had my M8 for years and it has always been my go-to camera, that shutter sound I just love and the images are so wonderful. Comparing it to your M11 that's a tough one but...... that CCD sensor can produces amazing images. Great video, enjoy your M8 and thanks for sharing
Thank you! Excited to be in the M8 club.
Thanks you gave me the envy to grab my old M8 again. That camera does stunning b&w. Upsizing the dng to a 6000 x 4000 is surreal and quite surprising.
Awesome. Enjoy!
I kept my M8, M9 and MM for this very reason. Thanks for the reminder! :)
That's awesome!
The M8 is the only digital camera I ever used for years. I am 50 years a photographer. Dabbled with monochrome leica, SL leica, but didn’t keep them…. Used the Hasselblad X1D briefly.
I loved my m8. Wonderful camera .
It's so good. Going to have to justify the M11 in my hands haha.
Purchased a very nice M8.2 as my first rangefinder coming from Fuji X100T last year. Love the engaging process even with the challenge of limited ISO and missing shots with two active kids. When it hits… it HITS. My request of a video on how to maximize night time/low light photography with the M8!!! Not everyone has fast lens and I like using my Konica Hexanon M 21-35 f/3.5 to much lol.
That would be a tough video given the ISO limitations of this camera but I'm down to try it!
been thinking of getting a Leica to add to the collection for a minute and never really EVEN thought of the M8!!! instant sub . got stuff, sir .
Thanks man! You won’t regret getting into Leica. Best part is, they hold their value if you buy used cameras and lenses.
Really great video. I think the colours of the M8 are awesome. It really does well considering the age. That said I feel (in my opinion) it doesn't render people are well as the M11 which is more natural and less contrast. Really does have a look and it's about the process and experience. There's a view I have that I feel older cameras with limitations or less valuable cameras allow us to have more fun and enjoy it more because it's different from what's currently out and therefore we see it in a different light. I'm like this with lenses, used to always want the sharpest and best but now exploring Leica's older lenses and having loads of fun.
I'm finding people to have that classic red-tone found in Kodak Kodachrome and Vision.
Great video about the M8 Dave! I have my M9 for about a year now and recently shoot even more with it. I specifically love the b/w conversion out of these old sensors. Mine has also the corrosion issue, but shooting wide open around F4 you can’t anything and it was under 1000$ 😊
Thanks! The M8 and M9 are really incredible cameras and were revolutionary.
The sepia conversion straight out of the M9 is to die for ;’)
Most usefull CCD/CMOS sensor comparison
I´ve seen. Thank you very much for that. I´ll keep my M9!
Happy I could help!
Bro TH-cam recommendations are insane, came across your channel less than 10 hours ago and finalizing a deal on m8! You hold power over is viewers. Love your work!
Haha amazing. You’re going to love it!
I have M8 and Q and let me tell that I find Q files more film like with fine grain at high iso and excellent standart BW jpegs sooc. I really wanted to see more film like appearance in M8 but I simply can’t. One thing though, in right conditions colors are so accurate and lovely that you just convert raw without any slider touched. RF is not for me, but I find Q to be the most amazing camera I ever had, love it to bits.
Nice! The Q is a fantastic camera.
I know nothing about Leica, but I know a lot about all DJI Pockets. Im using them since day one and they are so great. 4k60p perfectly stable in your pocket with almost natural colors. No phone can do that. Its an awesome device. Since the Pocket 3 I rarely take my DSLM with me.
Thank you for this beautiful video.
Thanks for sharing! I've got settings dialed in better now than I did when I filmed this.
the shutter sound is so good!!
Right? Seriously my favorite part.
The color science on the M8 is so AMAZING & BEAUTIFUL. I've tried to match a profile for my M11 to that of M8; it's hard to get a perfect match.
Yeah for sure!
I love the colors and hope you will release a CCD color/b&w preset in the near future 😊
Stay tuned!
God I miss my Leica M9! Just missed out on a bargain M8 recently, and it’s defo on my radar as a replacement. Got the M9 with corrosion issues, only because I wasn’t sure if I just wanted or needed a Leica rangefinder. When I got it, I instantly fell in love with the whole system. Now it’s gone. I miss it so much. I don’t need masses on megapixels so the M8 will make a good compromise. Looking forward to your future videos.
Thanks for sharing!
I’ve had the M8.2 for years, as soon as the .2 came out. The M8s have no IR filter across the Kodak sensor by design for higher Rez.
So uvir cut filter for the lens.
One extremely cool thing is it does extremely great B&W native images and the other is get a real true deep red IR filter and in the spring time in particular it give incredibly lushish native IR photography.
Works all year long but max chlorophyll in plants in the spring.
Hurry up and get a true IR filter above 720 and you will be thanking me in your IR M8 video
Lee
Thanks for sharing!
Well it was some bad design eh? I had the M8 and it is a fine camera but it was sent out for review wirthout IR filters as it appreared no one at leica had noticed the massive flaw and reviewers were shocked at the strange hue and strange effect on black. Many laughed at the fact that Leica hadn't seemed to notice until it was pointed out in the reviews. Then of course they retrosectively gave two IR filters with a new purchase of the camera. The Leica 'club' tend not to talk about it
Thanks for the comparison! Internet is really wild, I’ve been eyeing M8 for a few weeks and all of the sudden your work appears. Really love how the M8 boost on the warmer tone which I like a lot, it makes the characteristic really pops! I think the M8 will be a good pairing with my M10-D, and agreed on the point using 28mm on the M8 ones.
Gosh, you really drag me onto a deeper rabbit hole 😂
Ha thanks. The M8 is really a beautiful camera. I don’t even edit the photos out of it!
Love the colors, reminds me of my Leica CL and 23mm TL lens with vivid profile.
Nice! I have zero experience with the Leica CL.
Seems like the M8 is more like a Fuji where the colors punch SOOC in a filmic way, where the M11 is your typical modern camera that requires some post to get a vivid file. I don’t necessarily buy into the CCD hype 100% but the difference is obvious here!
And the M8 shutter sound is bliss 🤤
That shutter sound is enough for me to love this camera! And I agree with your observations.
Amazing how vivid and accurate the colour science is on that M8! Amazing
I agree!
Man, been using the M8 for two years now, it's such a very visceral and analogically experience using it!
I’m loving it!
Yeah, I got myself an M8 last year, Dave, taken some nice images with it also, its great!. I'm looking to pick up a nice condithion M 240, but I'll definetly hang on to the M8
Nice. I can’t wait to take more photos with it!
HI Dave, a suggestion for a future video - I own an M9 with a CCD sensor my go-to lens is the Carl Zeiss 50mm F2 Planar. I have also used the M10R with this lens. Wide open with the subject around 4m away the out of focus rendering behind the subject is extremely different between the two cameras. The CCD sensor is, well, breathtaking compared to the CMOS. Try it out, it will blow you away! My feeling is that the CCD, being less clinical, produces a creamy and voluptuous rendering.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I,m 69 years old. Love your, Love for the Old Equipt. Honestly, the M8,out rite blows the m11 away. I’ve been a Pro shooter for 40+ years. YES, please post more M8 work, so i can excited to Buy one. My m10r and M10M are wonderful. B an W. The BEST.
Thank you for sharing!
woah the reds and oranges really take on the Kodachrome aesthetic from the Leica M8. Great shots out of the box!!
I think so too!
I bought one it broke, then I bought another two! The M8 was one of the best introduction into the Leica system and I fell in love! This camera is incredible and I recommend it if you accept it's limitations. It's absolutely spectacular
Wow you're set then! Agreed, it's spectacular!
Idea for an M8 video: take it into a great place in the California nature and do an Ansel Adams Style photography video
Sold! I'l do it.
Great video and love the comparison. Personally I would have more fun with the M8 because I love shooting film for the charachter it has. The M8 realy delivers a closer look to the film look and the way it handles color, shadows, and highlights. I would love to see how it handles skin tones in some portrait shots in your futue videos.
Agreed! And I'll definitely be sharing more!
Isn't it funny that the M8 was lambasted by all those who knew a thing or two about cameras back then, but now it has found favour with all the Leica converts. It had a very noisy H facor CCD sensor with limited dynanmic range. You could hear the shutter a mile away, very unLeica like, We know the fiasco over the IR block filter, the rear LCD had no protection and could easily be cracked, and the list goes on. I had friend who was a Leica ' premium ' dealer and he told me that he was in no hurry to stock the M8 back then. But, like one of Russ Meyer's movies, the M8 was so bad that it became fun to have one years later. Enjoy your new talking point, the M8.
The M8 colors are amazing. I’m considering shooting a wedding on the M8 in New Zealand, if I can get hold of one. I’m just not sure about the practicality of it or how they handle low light what to expect with battery life. The ceremony bleeds into golden hour. I’m also a little concerned at how it’s 10 megapixels will affect me in post, considering it’s a wedding and not street photography. I’m not a very experienced photographer, but I tent to lean towards film cameras, so I’m looking for something that gives a similar look. If you have any videos addressing these in the M8, I’d love to see them. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. I love your videos!
I'll work on something about the resolution for sure!
Cool to see, I have the M8 and the M11 as well. I don't even use the IR filter on the M8, lol. It definitely has that CCD look. It's interesting to see the CMOS wider dynamic range files from the M11 as LR default. It would be interesting to see edited side by side with the M8, too. I see the M8 as my film camera for sunny days, lol. The shutter sound did get me a lot of comments over the years whether it was a film camera. It's also solidly built.
I was asked recently if it was a film camera from the shutter. It sounds like my Canon point and shoot, which auto advances the film. Very similar sound!
Dave, I had an M8 and an M8.2 when they came out… it was like wow, a digital M to complement my old m6….BUT for me, it was the M9 that won my heart.
Thanks for sharing. I know everyone loves the M9 too.
Great video! My M8 is the only camera I won't part with. Try IR photography with it (perhaps a subject for one video).
Great idea! I shot yesterday without the filter. Very wild results.
You might want to clarify that you need an IR-Cut filter, not an IR filter, totally different things. Without it black tend to go a bit purple/burgundy and some greens get a rather yellowish tint to them. The M8 was my introduction to the digital M world, quickly followed by an M9 and an original Monochrom, both with replaced sensor glass.
Thanks for the feedback.
The M8 is amazing. It is closed to film. It has the Leica look. Good video!
Thanks!
I've got an M8 Black Paint with beautiful brassing (look up the Mattias Burling video on the M8 here on YT - I own his camera now). It's the only camera I'll never, ever sell. And it's amazing how big you can blow up those 10mp files and still have great quality prints. I've done double page spreads in books of travel photos and they're as sharp as a tack. Enjoy the experience!
I’m planning a video with my local print shop to see how far we can push the M8 prints!
The colors are amazing. Would love to see how the render in a portrait session.
I’ll be doing that soon!
There's something special in some sensors that can not be replicate; like this Leica M8 CCD and the first version of Blackmagic Pocket camera OG .....
It's been so fun seeing what comes out of this camera.
The M8 did blow my mind, my first Leica and fave of all.. I didn't love another Leica in quite the same way again until I met the M11.
Love my M11 too. Nice it now has a grandpa.
well, I was an early M8 adopter, first batch in NYC. It bricked after a day. Very inauspicious start. It was love hate all the way like that. No issues with BW, but the color- you can see the IR contamination in several of the shots, the 11 has a neutral black, the 8 is magenta, even with the filter. That would be fine, but wait till you get to skin tone indoors under tungsten- everyone looks like they have rosacea. It was so long ago but everything that people seem to be waxing lovely on were definite negatives when it launched, in fact Leica really took it on the chin with that camera, the UVIR filters they had to pay for, many bricked cameras, sensor faults like stuck pixels leaving vertical lines, anything wider than 25 and you start to see cyan corners which had to be profiled out and that never worked great, it goes on and on. You have to remember where they were coming from - the M6/7- that shutter was like a canon compared to the film M's- so much so they offered an "upgrade"- $1500 for the .2 shutter. Only the red dot has the nerve to call a fix an upgrade. I loved that camera, and I hated that camera. It ruined so many pictures, and it made so many pictures. Vowed never again. Did I mention I just got a Q2. Sigh.
Man what a journey. But that’s how it goes!
@@davidherring Well you kind of hope that isn't how it goes when spending £3000 on a camera in 2006!!
Thank you! The M8 looks so much more brilliant in color. I am on the fence about getting the M8 but this def helps! Where is the best place to find one? Also, what kind of lense would you recommend?
I got mine at MPB! geni.us/leicam8
For lenses, I'd go 28mm so it's a 35mm on the M8 sensor. Check out lenses by Voigtlander if you want to save some cash, or a 28mm Leica Elmarit or Summicron if you want to retain value.
@@davidherring thank you so much! I appreciate the quick reply!
Interesting to see the color/saturation/contrast difference between the two cameras. One of these days I'd like to rent the M11 to compare it to my M9.
I was blown away at the difference in the DNG files.
...and the shutter lag on the m8 is far less than the M11! Love the colors!
The shutter is so pleasing.
Palo Alto farmer’s market? Wonderful colors…. Love the tomatoes! Have fun with the M8, I have a D700 I will never part with!
Thanks! No, not Palo Alto. I’m in the South Bay. But we have farmers markets everywhere here and they all kind of look the same haha.
Try the M8 Black and White without the IR filter.. Its amazing.....
Yes!
Can you send the links to the IR filter that you got. Thx my friend in advance 😊
amzn.to/4dcmWWJ
very good video, my m8 in the days never froze..but the sensor cracked twice 🤣
Oh man a cracked sensor?! Wild!
I got the M8 a few years ago because it was the only one I could afford! I wouldn’t swap it for a newer M as it has so much character
I love the M8. It's a great camera!
I sold my M8 (shot with a 35mm 2.5 Voigtländer color scopar) one year ago and regreted it ever since. The pictures from the M8 have such a organic look and feel, unmatched...
Agreed they are unmatched by any camera I've ever used!
The M8 has been on my radar for the past few months. I shot with a x100s and D200 majority of the time and love them. Wanted to go with a rangefinder camera and know Leica is the best for them. I don’t mind the M8 being 10mp since the D200 is the same. The colors that come out of the m8 remind in ways of the D200 which I like a lot.
Yeah you can’t beat the colors.
That M8 DNG color is quite nice straight out of camera 💯 makes the M11 look wayyy flat when you compare them. But the magic is in the dynamic range on that m11 sensor 🎯
True. The M11 is insane with dynamic range!
I think an interesting video would be street shooting comparison. From a handling perspective, I suspect the M11 gains some serious advantages when the scenes start to get dynamic and fast paced. But what about image quality? That's the thing about Leica.. you can generally dip back a few generations and get similar results and shooting style since their core goal is to maintain the heritage. I think a lot of shooters are after the street experience, so that might be a good video to show it's a Leica quality inherently and M bodies are just a spectrum of convenience and flexibility.
Personally, I think this video really shows how well Leica has done with staying the course. The M11 is a BEAST.. but ultimately it's a stones throw from the M8 without losing the feel of Leica's experience. Super commendable this day and age.
Agreed! I don’t know if I will ever be comfortable taking both out in San Francisco, but I’m planning to take the M8 out today if it will stop raining! Watch for the video on Monday.
@@davidherring Awesome. SF colors are great with those old sensors. I had the D70 and D200 during my time there and SF just came alive on them. I'm headed to Gilroy (unfortunately!) In a few months and I'm definitely aiming to get some outer sunset down on my M240 sensor.
Love these old cameras. Things weren't so "raw or bust" and they really played with getting lovely results in camera. It worked!
I can't afford the M8, but I got my hands on an Olympus E-500 - with the 4/3 version of that Kodak sensor.
The colors just pop.
Three years ago I picked up an aging Kodak point and shoot digital camera (featured in the movie Mission Impossible 2) for next to nothing, that rarely works for more than 1 or 2 shots at a time before I have to reset it by removing the batteries. I have only used it a couple of times - always in the middle of summer because it seizes up in cold weather, but the way it renders yellows in particular is wonderful.
The old sensors might not be as accurate as modern sensors, but Kodak got it right back then.
I wish we’d see a comeback of Kodak color science and modern camera systems. Would be the best of both worlds.
Gorgeous colors on the M8. I also wonder how b&w would look without the IR filter. B&W Infared photography. If it turns out interesting I'd love to see a vid about that.
I have an M8 and the rendering, micro contrast & overall tonality in B&W jpeg, without the UV/IR cut filter, is quite amazing. Really cool look with a vintage lens. Would make a good video.
Id add that the downside is how slow it writes the files when set in jpeg.
I'll definitely make this video!
B&W with the M8 is amazing. True it takes a while for the jpegs but it's a slow camera anyway just like shooting film- makes the whole process more deliberate.
Fortunately, I have developed impulse control. Otherwise, MPB would have one less used M8 available. LOVE, LOVE those colors!
Haha if it wasn’t for planning and strategizing it would be hard to justify anything I do 😂
I have the M8 ….. the only other digital M I’m interested in is an M8.2 ….. it satisfies my needs as a film photographer at heart. The crappy ISO performance just means that I only shoot it up to 640 …. which is fine for me. I don’t fool too much with jpegs because of how awesome the unedited .dng files are. I would love to see you test high contrast black and white jpegs vs Tri X pushed one stop.
Same, I may crank to 800 now and then, otherwise I shoot very low ISO. Living in CA helps, where it's always bright.
Ooh I’m so jealous! I’ve been wanting one for a few years. Probably the only leica I can afford for a long time anyway, haha. Definitely seems like it would be the perfect carry camera (for me anyway). Enjoy it👍
Thanks! I'm excited about the future with it.
I have an M9 that I still use. How is the sensor, was it replaced?
The M8 never had sensor issues like the M9, so it’s original.
The m8 its awesome, the colors are the most beautiful ones, i never saw any other camera with this color i always thinking to have one m8 :)
Really is. Thanks for sharing!
Still use my M8 for color. My main cam is the M11M. Taking the two of them on a shoot is almost like carrying two m6 bodies, one loaded with Kodachrome 64, the other with Kodak Technical Pan. Unfortunately, back in the film days, I only had one M6 and always shot B/W with it.
Really great combo. Thanks for sharing!
Dreading the day my M8 dies but like you I was lucky enough to pick one up from a collector - shutter account of only 3,500. I absolutely love this camera.
I much prefer the M8 files to the M11 in this video. The colours are more saturated and punchy and the contrast is higher. The M11 files look dull and flat in comparison. Of course with the M11 files you have a lot more data to play with in post but SOOC there’s no contest. M8 all the way.
It’s such a fun camera to use. It has the best shutter of any Leica, and the colors are amazing.
@@davidherringI’ve just updated my comment with my thoughts on the files. Pretty much as you said. I have the dreaded coffee stain on the rear screen of my M8 but has zero impact on the files and the screen is next to useless anyway so who cares!!
Dude, you're absolutely right. M8 is much better! It's clear that the M8 matrix is configured in a special way! The colors are magical, yes, this is the sauce, but the reality that M11 shows is so poor!
Thanks! M8 files are just beautiful.
The Kodak colors are 100% there for the M8. I'm glad you're not doing pixel peeping for this kind of comparison.
For sure. Yeah, you can't pixel peep a 10mp camera haha.
Unfortunately when I moved a few years ago my wife made me toss all my old Leica sales brochures. It still blows my mind that Kodak had this technology and its upper management didn’t know what to do with it. The CCD sensor generation will be looked back on as the Kodachrome era of digital. The first digital marketing info Leica put out was on the S1, after that Digi-Lux, all before the ‘M’. There was lots of blowback from traditionalist when the M8 came out. I love the old CCD colors but some times they could be on the over ripened side. What’s missing now is the Leica development program that once was pre Lightroom. Slowly we’ll get back there, I think it’s going to take Leica adding a module into their Foto’s program to fully harvest the camera sensors full potential. Great content Dave, your challenge now is to stay objective and not fall in love with the romance of the M8. Kodak built an empire off of Kodachrome but that doesn’t mean we should go back there. It’s a look and one I happen to love but when I take product shots I’d rather have my M11-P. Thanks to people like you and others, photography is experiencing a new renaissance.
Thanks for the comment. The M11 cannot be replaced for my work and serious photography, but the M8 is a nice and fun camera as well. I have several cameras but none has as beautiful of rendering as this M8.
Nope, the M8 is very special. I hope it helps you with your presets.
What do you think about the start up time on m8 compared to m11?
Not much difference honestly. Or at least, I haven’t felt a difference with the M8.
With the kodak coloring and the 10MP, is it worth it? Like I see the images you are posting, but then again you are a professional I am not, so will it work like for stills, street and portrait wedding photos?
Would I use it today for commercial photography or if I was doing weddings? No. Will I use it for personal stuff and even social media / sharing? Absolutely.
@@davidherring thanks!!!
Well I’d say the M8 won hands down. Much fuller saturated colours; as u say, very filmic. But not being full frame and only 10mps I wonder how well and what size it comfortably prints ? (Also Prhps the filter helped to give it more colour ? ). Nice video n pics, Thks !
It's wild how different it is. I'm going to do a video about prints from this camera soon!
If you know, How does the M8 sensor compare to the M9 sensor? Aren't they both CCD?
Thanks for your reply...
As I understand it, the M8 was emulated off of Kodachrome and the M9 was designed to be as realistic as possible. Traded some style for natural colors. People love both, for different reasons.
I am sure glad I have hung on to mine which I bought new in 2008.
Amazing. Keep it!
The colors are beautiful out of the M8
Love it.
Blow your mind from anger every time you miss a shot because it took 20473 seconds to wake up.
Not my experience so far.
The M9 also has a Kodak CCD that gets me Kodachrome-like images. The M8 just had a really weak IR blocking filter.
From my understanding, with the M9 Kodak tried to dial in more "true-to-life" colors. Equally pleasing, but it is a different sensor and rendering.
The M8 and M9 always had the best colours in my opinion, I miss my M9 :( I think the M10 and M11 are great but man.. there's something about that CCD goodness. Btw have you try matching your M11 colour to match your M8? I tried to do the same with my M11 but.. I don't think I got it right. Thanks anyway this video was great! Cheers!
I've heard this about the M8 and M9 for years. Finally able to confirm!
the images are beautiful
They are! Loving this camera.
Love the M8 colors more-but I’m a sucker for saturated, contrasty images. Cool comparison.
Same!
My M8 was also mint condition, but had 25,000 shots on it. People have reported up to 150,000 before camera fails. But I love my M8. Only shoot BnW.
So wild, I checked this morning (thanks to a comment showing me how) and it’s at 3,750.
As a D50 fan, I’d love to see a comparison between the M8 and a D50. Leica vs Leica doesn’t tell me much, as I don’t own one. But I do have a D50. Maybe a thought for next time?
I wish I still had my D50 but I sold it in 2009 I believe.
Colors on M8 are rich. You especially see this with the orange colors. I’m curious to know how both cameras feel in terms of handling, not in terms of controls as there would be a difference in controls, but in feel.
I have larger hands so I actually like the size and bulk of the M8. That said, the M11 is definitely a refined experience.
You should make some larger prints (A2 and larger) to see if the megapixels make such a big difference.
I'm planning to do a video about printing!
Sounds good! Looking forward to it. 👍
My M8.2 is also very good for black and white photography. Its shutter is a bit more reliable than M8.
Thanks for sharing!
I would like to see if black and whites are different with the IR filter and without. SOOC
I'll be doing this for sure!
The files are amazing on a sunny day, but the newer Leicas Ms trump it in most other light conditions. I have owned M8's for 15 years now but now shoot mainly with a M10. You can also come close to the M8 files look by increasing contrast and some color channels(red and blue), so overall I am not sure that the M8 colors are enough to offset the risk of critical failures (especially the shutter, avoid shooting too much at 1/8000 by the way) and loud shutter (not ideal for street photography).
I hear you. I don’t see myself shooting that high ever, and will typically use an ND on my lenses to stay below 1/1000.
Colors on M11 looks cooler, maybe a little to red on the M8 but after processing better.
For sure red on the M8, but it's on purpose to have that Kodachrome look.
Dude I dropped my M8 a while back & the range finder got out of focus. Luckily it still works!
Yeah for sure! Not too hard to fix a rangefinder that’s out of alignment.
The m8 looks like Koda chrome! Maybe it would complement my M10-p and Q2. Thanks. I'm off to eBay.
Haha have fun!
Try it with the 35mm asph non FLE, sooo much nicer than the FLE I bet you'll concur there as well
Thanks for sharing!
So what are your jpg settings ?
Don’t know, haven’t used them. These are DNGs.
Anyway you have a new subscriber 😉
First off, wow. The M8 files look infinitely better than the M11 SOOC. That is wild. There is so much life and character to the photographs that the M11 just lacks. Am I feeling a Kodachrome VGP coming soon????
There's definitely something special in the works for this fall.
Love the look of the CCD sensor on the M8. Just wish it was full frame and not aps-h. Stupid thing to harp on but for me I would spring for the m9 over the m8 just for the cost benefit. THAT SAID - I really want an m8 lmao
I try to think about specs less and experience more these days.
Can you make a video where you shoot the M8 exclusively in monochrome mode? Its excelling there. love my M8! Will never sell it.
Sure!
