Nice video!! Love the m8, use to have one and I missed her. You can check how many shoots it has.
    After powering on the camera:
    1) press the right button [inside the rear control dial] 4 times.
    2) press the left button 3 times.
    3) press the right button once more.
    4) press info, you will then see a menu in small print.
    5) scroll down (hitting bottom button) until you see Body Debug Data.
    6) press set and scroll down until you see number of exposures (and the number taken).
All the info you need it’s there, more details in the leica forum.
    Cheers front argentina!

I love my Leica M8, even though the shutter is stuck and needs repair. I've used it since 2008 and always admired how it renders pictures, especially black and white shots. While considered the underdog of the M line, your video highlighted its punching power. The M8 may get hate, but its image quality won me over. Cant wait to see more of it on your channel

I also have an M8... and had a stuck shutter. I actually "fixed" mine by clicking the shutter release button while at the same time gently-ish banging the camera on to a semi hard surface like a stack of magazines. No guarantees it will work, but I had a repair quote from Leica that it would cost about $1000 USD to fix. Mine is now unstuck and has been working properly for months! Note: my M8 is not heavily used. I also purchased it very lightly used only about a year ago. Yes, it is a fantastic camera!

I bought an M8, 17 years ago precisely because of the very film like images, especially in Black and White. Later I upgraded to an M9 Monochrom, followed by the Q2M (which I currently own and love). I sold my M9 Monochrom last year and recently picked up a used M8 in very good condition. So happy to have this camera back. It’s a pity that Kodak didn’t continue to develop their amazing CCD sensors. The M8 doesn’t disappoint, even 17 years later!

Really great video. I think the colours of the M8 are awesome. It really does well considering the age. That said I feel (in my opinion) it doesn't render people are well as the M11 which is more natural and less contrast. Really does have a look and it's about the process and experience. There's a view I have that I feel older cameras with limitations or less valuable cameras allow us to have more fun and enjoy it more because it's different from what's currently out and therefore we see it in a different light. I'm like this with lenses, used to always want the sharpest and best but now exploring Leica's older lenses and having loads of fun.

I’ve had the M8.2 for years, as soon as the .2 came out. The M8s have no IR filter across the Kodak sensor by design for higher Rez.
So uvir cut filter for the lens.
One extremely cool thing is it does extremely great B&W native images and the other is get a real true deep red IR filter and in the spring time in particular it give incredibly lushish native IR photography.
Works all year long but max chlorophyll in plants in the spring.
Hurry up and get a true IR filter above 720 and you will be thanking me in your IR M8 video

Well it was some bad design eh? I had the M8 and it is a fine camera but it was sent out for review wirthout IR filters as it appreared no one at leica had noticed the massive flaw and reviewers were shocked at the strange hue and strange effect on black. Many laughed at the fact that Leica hadn't seemed to notice until it was pointed out in the reviews. Then of course they retrosectively gave two IR filters with a new purchase of the camera. The Leica 'club' tend not to talk about it

HI Dave, a suggestion for a future video - I own an M9 with a CCD sensor my go-to lens is the Carl Zeiss 50mm F2 Planar. I have also used the M10R with this lens. Wide open with the subject around 4m away the out of focus rendering behind the subject is extremely different between the two cameras. The CCD sensor is, well, breathtaking compared to the CMOS. Try it out, it will blow you away! My feeling is that the CCD, being less clinical, produces a creamy and voluptuous rendering.

Isn't it funny that the M8 was lambasted by all those who knew a thing or two about cameras back then, but now it has found favour with all the Leica converts. It had a very noisy H facor CCD sensor with limited dynanmic range. You could hear the shutter a mile away, very unLeica like, We know the fiasco over the IR block filter, the rear LCD had no protection and could easily be cracked, and the list goes on. I had friend who was a Leica ' premium ' dealer and he told me that he was in no hurry to stock the M8 back then. But, like one of Russ Meyer's movies, the M8 was so bad that it became fun to have one years later. Enjoy your new talking point, the M8.

The M8 colors are amazing. I’m considering shooting a wedding on the M8 in New Zealand, if I can get hold of one. I’m just not sure about the practicality of it or how they handle low light what to expect with battery life. The ceremony bleeds into golden hour. I’m also a little concerned at how it’s 10 megapixels will affect me in post, considering it’s a wedding and not street photography. I’m not a very experienced photographer, but I tent to lean towards film cameras, so I’m looking for something that gives a similar look. If you have any videos addressing these in the M8, I’d love to see them. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. I love your videos!

You might want to clarify that you need an IR-Cut filter, not an IR filter, totally different things. Without it black tend to go a bit purple/burgundy and some greens get a rather yellowish tint to them. well, I was an early M8 adopter, first batch in NYC. It bricked after a day. Very inauspicious start. It was love hate all the way like that. No issues with BW, but the color- you can see the IR contamination in several of the shots, the 11 has a neutral black, the 8 is magenta, even with the filter. That would be fine, but wait till you get to skin tone indoors under tungsten- everyone looks like they have rosacea. It was so long ago but everything that people seem to be waxing lovely on were definite negatives when it launched, in fact Leica really took it on the chin with that camera, the UVIR filters they had to pay for, many bricked cameras, sensor faults like stuck pixels leaving vertical lines, anything wider than 25 and you start to see cyan corners which had to be profiled out and that never worked great, it goes on and on. You have to remember where they were coming from - the M6/7- that shutter was like a canon compared to the film M's- so much so they offered an "upgrade"- $1500 for the .2 shutter. Only the red dot has the nerve to call a fix an upgrade. I loved that camera, and I hated that camera. It ruined so many pictures, and it made so many pictures. Vowed never again. Did I mention I just got a Q2. Sigh.

  • @SourPlanet

I think an interesting video would be street shooting comparison. From a handling perspective, I suspect the M11 gains some serious advantages when the scenes start to get dynamic and fast paced. But what about image quality? That's the thing about Leica.. you can generally dip back a few generations and get similar results and shooting style since their core goal is to maintain the heritage. I think a lot of shooters are after the street experience, so that might be a good video to show it's a Leica quality inherently and M bodies are just a spectrum of convenience and flexibility.
Personally, I think this video really shows how well Leica has done with staying the course. The M11 is a BEAST.. but ultimately it's a stones throw from the M8 without losing the feel of Leica's experience. Super commendable this day and age.

Three years ago I picked up an aging Kodak point and shoot digital camera (featured in the movie Mission Impossible 2) for next to nothing, that rarely works for more than 1 or 2 shots at a time before I have to reset it by removing the batteries. I have only used it a couple of times - always in the middle of summer because it seizes up in cold weather, but the way it renders yellows in particular is wonderful.

Unfortunately when I moved a few years ago my wife made me toss all my old Leica sales brochures. It still blows my mind that Kodak had this technology and its upper management didn’t know what to do with it. The CCD sensor generation will be looked back on as the Kodachrome era of digital. The first digital marketing info Leica put out was on the S1, after that Digi-Lux, all before the ‘M’. There was lots of blowback from traditionalist when the M8 came out. I love the old CCD colors but some times they could be on the over ripened side. What’s missing now is the Leica development program that once was pre Lightroom. Slowly we’ll get back there, I think it’s going to take Leica adding a module into their Foto’s program to fully harvest the camera sensors full potential. Great content Dave, your challenge now is to stay objective and not fall in love with the romance of the M8. Kodak built an empire off of Kodachrome but that doesn’t mean we should go back there. It’s a look and one I happen to love but when I take product shots I’d rather have my M11-P. Thanks to people like you and others, photography is experiencing a new renaissance.

The files are amazing on a sunny day, but the newer Leicas Ms trump it in most other light conditions. I have owned M8's for 15 years now but now shoot mainly with a M10. You can also come close to the M8 files look by increasing contrast and some color channels(red and blue), so overall I am not sure that the M8 colors are enough to offset the risk of critical failures (especially the shutter, avoid shooting too much at 1/8000 by the way) and loud shutter (not ideal for street photography).

First off, wow. The M8 files look infinitely better than the M11 SOOC. That is wild. There is so much life and character to the photographs that the M11 just lacks. Am I feeling a Kodachrome VGP coming soon????

Love the look of the CCD sensor on the M8. Just wish it was full frame and not aps-h. Stupid thing to harp on but for me I would spring for the m9 over the m8 just for the cost benefit. THAT SAID - I really want an m8 lmao

I try to think about specs less and experience more these days.

Can you make a video where you shoot the M8 exclusively in monochrome mode? Its excelling there. love my M8! Will never sell it.
