Always start to put the tyre on from the opposite side of the valve. Some tyres have to be pushed deep into the rim-well to be loose enough to be fitted (tubes or tubeless doesn't matter). if the well is already occupied with the valve, then you are wasting valuable millimeters. I had to learn this the hard way, when mounting dh casing tyres on enve rims with cushcore.

      Uhhh NO...
Start AT the valve (Edit: or 1/4 away) so you don't end on it. If you finish on the valve you stand the chance of the tyre landing on top of the reinforced section around the base of the valve and hilarity ensues when you inflate the tube fully.
(Edit: I start at the valve so it is easy to make sure the valve is clear of the sidewalls, but then work one side more than the other so I end 1/4 way round from the valve (so it doesn't interfere with the sidewalls sitting into the middle of the rim to give the best "stretch" over the opposite side
(I know, the sidewall doesn't stretch...
Well actually they do.. I have a video in my channel of the result of a sidewall that stretches... )

@@TheButlerNZ ALWAYS finish at the valve. Then, push the valve back up into the tire while pushing down on the tire to make sure the bead has fully settled into place.

Baby powder without talc, talc absorbs moisture, should be added to coat the tire and tube. After riding the heat causes the tube and tire to bond which is the culprit for snake bite. The talc allows the tube and tire to move independently greatly minimizing snake bite.

Start AT the valve so you don't end on it. If you finish on the valve you stand the chance of the last piece of sidewall landing on top of the reinforced section around the base of the valve and hilarity ensues when you inflate the tube fully.
(This can happen even if you start at the valve, I only put the nut on the stem a few threads (so it doesn't fall off or push in while fitting the tyre... this also allows you to push the stem in temporarily to make sure it is not caught under one of the sidewalls. (do the nut up fully when the tyre has been fully inflated.
Make sure as you go, that the fitted sidewalls are as close to the centre of the rim as you can get them, this allows the sidewall on the opposite side of the rim to pass over the edge.
I try and end about 1/4 round from the valve as sometimes the valve stem gets in the way of getting that maximum depth on the opposite side to get the last section of sidewall over the rim.
A tyre sidewall DOES NOT stretch so if you fit the tyre round and it sits out on the edge (where it will end up when inflated) it can be physically impossible to get the last section of sidewall over.
With this method you should (like me) fit and remove without levers.. (never use levers to fit... if you catch the innertube with the lever even a 'plastic' one can puncture it)
Note: you may need to overinflate the tyre to bead evenly all way round... don't forget to drop that pressure later (I often leave it till the next day.. then forget )...
To remove a tyre, completely deflate the tyre, remove the valve nut and push in the valve (unless it's tubeless), squeeze both sidewalls in to the middle of the rim all the way round. Grab the tyre about 1/4 way around from the valve and pull it away from the rim as much as possible
(now's a good time with a spare hand to double check both sidewalls are in the middle of the rim all way round....)
Roll the tyre over the side and try and push both sidewalls off and toward the axle... You may not get both sidewalls over, but as long as you get a piece over you can use the other side of the tyre to push more of that side over... once one sidewall is off the other will nearly fall off just looking at it.
Now if you want hard... try fitting a motorbike tyre... Lets just say it involves lots of tyre lube and as big a rubber mallet you can find... & a pit with pit boards to fit the brake disk between so the rim sits flat... and you don't have that side up and smack the disk with that mallet... then apply 80-100PSI to get it to bead correctly

I have several nylon tyre levers that have broken off, now I have some with a metal core. Very helpful when trying to get Schwalbe clincher tyres onto the rim. it took me 30 minutes or more to get them onto a rim without tyre levers.

Forgot to do the baby powder trick. Its critical to prevent tire and inner tube seizing (or vulcanizing eachother) and lowers rolling resistance... if you run with inner tubes you must know it

    Nice video Dod.
Waddaya think of talcum when using tubes? I know it's old school but so are tubes and I'm a big fan of it on my commuter. The ride feels a little more flexy or comfy with it and you don't get this weird residue after using it for months or maybe years.

Happy to see that MTB community realizes the facts: tubeless is not for the majority of riders (especially for those who ride occasionally). Yes, I can see the point for racers and everyday riding (been there, done that) but eventually a combination of a reliable tire, a standard tube and a tannus armour insert can handle everything without the fuss. Since I 've tried that, I 've never look back (still have a full bottle of MucOff sealant spare valves and rim tapes sitting pretty somewhere in the tool box...).
