I believe this was originally written and recorded by Boz Scaggs. Both versions are great.
Yes it was. It’s on his great Silk Degrees album from 1976.
This was also recorded by Frankie Valli. It's on his 1976 album Valli. Released as a single, it only peaked at US number 78 due to lack of promotion from Private Stock records.
@@BrianAper I love Frankie, but it wasn't a very good version. Boz Scaggs owns this song. Nobody comes close.
@@EricthelogosThis was my late husband's and mine's song.Nobody does it better than Boz.❤
@@EricthelogosThe songwriter sang it best - go Boz.
I have always loved Rita Coolidge's smooth voice. I put her in the same league as Christine McVie from Fleetwood Mac. This is a Boz Scaggs song.
That whole Boz Skaggs album is aces.
Yeah you can totally hear Boz Scaggs in this song.
-#cheers-- !-
Great comparison👍🏻😎
Lovely version. I do love the C&K (version from Hawaii); beautiful song with gorgeous lyrics. I miss the 70s
I used to rock my son to sleep to this song. He's 39 now and I still remember all the words. Rita Coolidge is Cherokee Indian and was married to Kris Kristopherson from 1973 to 1980.
She's also great on Robbie Robertson's album "Music for Native Americans".
Interesting that they picked up on it seeing a resemblance to Cher.
@@vincentschmitt7597I believe Cher is also part Cherokee as well. Elizabeth Warren is not.
@@LesterMoore Wrong on both counts Lester, Cher does not have any Native American ancestor and a DNA test showed that Warren does.
what a lucky little boy! thanks for posting.
Her remake of Jackie Wilson's 'Your Love is Lifting Me Higher and Higher' is my favorite of hers. She was also married to Kris Kristofferson.
Absolutely! That song takes me back to the summer of '77 when my mother and I drove across California on a mother/daughter trip. I was pushing 8 yrs old then.
When I think of Rita Coolidge, that's the song that come to mind for me.
That's the song I most associate with her, too. She took a fantastic song and really made it uniquely hers while still honoring the original.
I’m so glad y’all finally got around to Rita Coolidge, known by many as Delta Lady. She was a muse to Leon Russell. Her voice is incomparable, warm, rich, smooth, and smoky. She has some great solo records and duets with her ex, Kris Kristofferson.
The Midnight Special TH-cam channel put up a full episode today from 73 featuring Coolidge and Kristofferson and hosted by Paul Williams.
Thanks! I’ll check it out!@@sg-yq8pm
Being older, when this amazing album, record dropped, I was so in love with Rita. She was so beautiful and wild. And this Boz Scaggs song was sooooo cute, lovely and sweet. A real love song !!
She also performed in the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour with Leon Russell, Joe Cocker, Claudia Lanier and Bobby Keys along with others.
She was at that time a real hot girl, she was (according to books) also with Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Jim Gordon, Klaus Vormann and much more, before she met and felt in love with Kris Kristofferson.
Rita Coolidge, a beautiful American Indian of my father's people.
Another song by her you'll love is Higher And Higher. Also please add Melissa Manchester to your list of new singers to react to. Just like Rita, she had several hits in the 70's and early 80's.
Definitely do Melissa Manchester. I saw her in concert a few years ago and though in her seventies, her voice was still amazing. Check out Melissa manchesters song midnight blue. She is a singer/songwriter which usually for me are the best songs cuz they can tailor it to their voice and generally are more gifted musically. Don’t cry out loud is also one of her big hits. Come in from the rain and through the eyes of love are some of her other hits. Her rich and deep and powerful yet sweet voice is well worth the exploring
@@kellyjohnson3617 - Yes Melissa Manchester's "Don't Cry Out Loud" is one of the most beautiful songs ever.
A more upbeat Melissa Manchester song is "You Should Hear How She Talks About You." It's a fun one!😊
Don't Cry Out Loud always gets me.
YES! HIGHER & HIGHER . GREAT RECOMMENDATION. ALSO THE LIVE VERSION ON STAGE WITH HER BAND " YOU"
She has the kind of voice that could sing the alphabet and it would be dreamy and put hope in your heart
Rita Coolidge went to FSU at the same time I did in the late 60's. We both were in the art dept and she was my idol. Even back then, Rita was one of the coolest people around. In fact, she was known around campus as Rita Cool. She sang with a folk group back then too. Rita Coolidge has lived an incredibly interesting life having been with both Leon Russell (she was the Delta Lady} and later married to Kris Kristofferson. I saw an interview with her recently and she still is one of the coolest people around.
Everything is all right in the world with Rita Coolidge.
🎶 (You're love has lifted me)"Higher and Higher" was probably her biggest hit. Blast from the past 👍 funky tune 🎶
I forgot how much I liked this song. I haven't heard it in decades.
Rita Coolidge has such an amazing voice! I'm glad you enjoyed her! Next, you need to check out 'All Time High', easily my favorite Rita Coolidge song. It was the theme song for the James Bond movie 'Octopussy'.
That’s beautiful
My favourite Bond tune.
Because it's difficult to write a song named Octopussy 🤣🤣🤣
Rita has such a clear and powerful voice and this song is one of my favorites from the 1970s!
"Your Love Is Lifting Me Higher" is peak Rita and peak 1970's.
Jay & Amber, you'll LOVE her "(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher" !!!!
edit- todays song written by Boz Scaggs.
Oh, great song !
Another masterpiece.
Yes they will love that song for sure!! I loved this album so much.
Great songs. Great voice. ❤
This song is a masterpiece. This is one of my favorite songs of all time!!! My wife of 25 years and I dance to this when it rains. We have been together for 30 years, but married for 25. This song just dusts off the years, and awakens the passion every time that needle hits the vinyl. What an amazing song!!!! Time is cruel, and we are exhausted from chasing the years of our lives, but as we get older, we learn that we need to love the moment that we are in.
Her song: Your Love Has Lifted Me Higher
is great too!!
Beautiful song written by Boz Scaggs. You couldn't escape this song when it first came out as it was all over the radio. Her voice was absolutely gorgeous!
Round about 1970/71 I went to watch a top American band called The Byrds perform in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne in the north east of England.
They were supported by a little known singer called Rita Coolidge, I was mesmerised by her voice and it was a pleasure to watch her develop into a huge international star over the following years 😀
You lucky LUCKY guy!
This song was written by Boz Scaggs who released it first and Rita was the second to cover it. I think there's also a version of both her and Boz together on the track. She also sang the theme to a James Bond movie called All Time High. She also has a nice version of Jackie Wilson's (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher.
It was first sung by Frankier Vali writenby the BOZ
I suggested Miss Rita Coolidge a few weeks ago, when they reacted to Joe Cocker, but my choice of song was (Your love keeps lifting me) Higher and Higher, which is my personal favorite!
Frankie Valli's version of this song was awful. Boz's original version and Rita's cover are waaaay better
Jay & Amber, will you guys please do a First reaction video for the Joe Cocker song " Feelin Allright " ( the album/radio version ) ? If you like this song by Rita Coolidfe then you will love that Joe Cocker song
@db-gb5xi.... can you provide where this duo collaboration with Boz was! Or didja just dream it would've been a really cool jam!!??
Rita Coolidge has a beautiful and warm voice, an underrated singer from the 70s. I'd check out "Higher" as your next song to react to
Rita Coolidge started her career as a backup singer for Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett, and many others. The Cocker song, Delta Lady was dedicated to her. She did an early version of the song Superstar on Joe Cockers's Mad Dogs & Englishmen album, you have heard the Carpenter's later version.
Wasn't she married to Kris Kristofferson ?
She co-wrote "Superstar" and, I think "Layla" tho she didn't get credit for the latter--per her autobiography.
@@SpuzzyLargo Rita wrote the piano coda at the end of "Layla" and no, she never got credit for it. Jim Gordon, who's in prison for killing his mother took all the credit.
@@helgar791 he died recently I wanna say in March this year
@@meliplay Joe Cocker died 2014, Leon Russell died 2016. Kris Kristofferson, her ex-husband is still alive and kicking at the ripe age of 87 years young.
One of the best female voices of the Seventies. She was married to Kris Kristofferson and they did several albums of duets together.
In the movie A star is Born she's actually the presenter of the award and he comes up on stage and gives her a big kiss , I suddenly figured he was up there actually kissing his wife.
Instant Classic!
Don't forget her other smash hit "Your Love Has Lifted Me (Higher and Higher)" (#2 in the nation 1977)
I haven’t heard this beautiful song in years …❤️
Me either.❤
-amazing !-
Gorgeous silky smooth.....
Always loved her smooth, breathy voice. She was really great in concert! My favorites of hers are this song, "All Time High, "Words ( written by The Bee Gees) and my all time favorite by her, " I'd Rather Leave While I'm In Love", which should be your next reaction to her!!
She also sings with her Native American group Walela. Beautiful music
"The Cherokee Morning Song"
Thank you for saying that. Walela Wind, isn't it...
Ohhhh I had this song on an old 45 in the 70's along with her other hit song Higher and Higher. Love her...She's Native American-Cherokee and was a big deal in the 70's with the hits.
WOW,Wow,wow…does this bring me back! It’s weird how some songs bring up the feelings from that time even though the memory of what was happening is gone. I felt something tickling my face just now and realized it is tears. Some kind of heartache going on here, but it feels strangely good because it reminds me that loving and losing IS part of life! Yup,senior lady here!
Yes,I love this song and once again, enjoyed your reactions and comments! “Smokey and sweet” Perfect! 💕🩷💕
I'll be 55 next month. And I miss these days so much. Everything about it. And as much as I cry, you're right, loving and losing is life. ❤
One of my all time favorite songs
She and her daughter have a group where they celebrate their Native American heritage and they do version of Amazing Grace IN CHEROKEE!! It's gorgeous! I forget the name if the group. You really need to check it out and the songs she sang with Kris Kristofferson. I love this song.
The group is called Walela
It's great. I think I suggest it a year or so ago.
She often performs at many of the Native American owned casinos, smaller venues & more intimate settings to hear her amazing voice
One of the most beautiful songs ever, Great voice, Definitely another favorite
A sweet childhood memory, loved this song so much ❤
'Your Love is Lifting Me Higher' is my favorite of hers. Different vibe, but still as good.
Boz versión is so full of feeling, his voice is so unique, you become part of the song and to be able to write this song and have Rita sing it .. gave the world two versions of one of the best love songs to ever get written!! In my opinion!!
I’d forgotten how beautiful her voice is. Such warmth. So happy she was suggested xxxx
The most beautiful song in the world!
Rita Coolidge is incredible. Leon Russell wrote his song, Delta Lady, about her. She wrote the music for the piano outro on the song, Layla, although her boyfriend, Jim Gordon, took credit for it. You mentioned Karen Carpenter, they both covered Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell's song, Superstar. Rita's version has so much more feeling. You can hear it on the Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen album. I saw her do it live when the tour hit Columbus. A few other suggestions besides Superstar: That Man is My Weakness, and her cover of Van Morrison's Crazy Love is incredible! More Rita please!!!
This was one of mine and my mother’s favorite female singers.
Oh, this just took me back to my childhood. I just love her voice, so clear and beautiful.
What a great voice
It's so nice to clearly hear each instrument compliment the other as the vocals join them. All Time High is another good song by Rita.
Rita was married to Kris Kristofferson. She was also a member of the "space choir" who were backup singers for Joe Cocker's tour in 1970. Check out another good song by her called "Your love has lifted me higher." Kris and Rita did some great duets together. Check out "Help me make it through the night", "Please don't tell me how the story ends" and "Me and Bobby McGee."
..
Holy crap, it has been a hot minute since the last time I heard this song. Wow, this brings back memories. What a great tune!
She's a native of my hometown, Nashville TN!
Love her!! Love her voice!!
One of my FAVOURITE female artistes!!!
Higher and higher(Iyour love has lifted me) Is a great song by Rita
Gotta listen to (Your Love has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher!
"Once a story's told, it can't help but grow old." One of my Top 10 favorite lyrics in music.
Rita has a beautiful voice and face.
You'll never guess which decade this comes from lol
YES the 70's
This is a highlight of 70's beautiful music. It can't be beat.
Love her
This is a great example of mellow 70s. I remember hearing this on am radio in the backseat of the station wagon on summer vacations.
Fantastic song! Beautifully sung.
It's a cover of a Boz Scaggs song. his version is worth a listen as well!
Loved Rita and Loved this song ♥️🙏✌️😎
This is such a beautiful song. Thanks for the memories 😊
Rita Coolidge is a great artist. So glad you enjoyed her! This was one of her bigger hits along with a great unique cover of Jackie Wilson's great song (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher & Higher. BOTH versions are definitely worth listening to and I'd love to hear your reaction!
Other Rita Coolidge songs to check out are - ""All Time High (Theme From Octopussy)", "Higher And Higher", and "I'd Rather Leave While I'm In Love"
My all time favorite of Rita Coolidge's songs is "I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love"!! Sooo smooth and silky!!!!❤
I really don't like getting older but I do love that I'm old enough to remember hearing this song on the radio when it was out. It reminds me of some fun times in the summer of 1977.
I am so so very happy that you have found the beautiful voice of Rita Coolidge...!! "Love Has No Pride"
This entire album is fabulous.
I love her. So relaxing I could fall asleep to her singing
You can't go wrong with any song from the 70's, this song is no exception.
The duet with Rita and Kris Kristofferson called "Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends" is haunting, especially now that we know how the story ended. She is, relevant to almost nothing, a Cherokee Indian, and her beautiful, exotic look and lilting voice used to drive me crazy five decades ago when I was a young man.
You two nailed it...just close your eyes and lose yourself in this beautiful song, you can't beat it
Wow, what a flashback this is. Another gem from my childhood, thanks for the react!
Rita Coolidge was a very diversified singer, love her voice. Glad to see you reacting to her again well worth it😊
Many a drunk night singing Rita on the front porch. Top of our lungs!
I know the lyrics by heart. She just captivates you ❤
Originally a Boz Skaggs song. I think Delta Lady did it justice... If you didn't already know, she was "delta lady" in the song by that name sung by Joe Cocker. Leon Russell who was a writer in that song was her boyfriend and wrote it about her.
My favourite Joe Cocker song.
Written by Boz Scaggs. Love her voice. Higher and Higher (originally by Jackie Wilson) is another great one from Ms. Coolidge.
Three members of Toto playing on this one.
Love her voice- I have a number of her albums.😊
Love Rita Coolidge.
I listen to this song often. And I sing my heart out! This song is soooo good!!!❤
It's the minor steps in the chorus melody that make this song feel SO deeply sweet and lovely!
This is one of my favorite songs by Rita Coolidge❤️
She was married to Kris Krisofferson
She also did one of my favorite James Bond songs “ ALL TIME HIGH”
Great artist! Love her. Try her Version of "Higher and Higher". She and Kris K. were an item.Toured with Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Glad you like her. Nice ending to a stressful day. Thanks.
A beautiful pure voice isn't it. I remember slow dancing with my very first girlfriend in junior high to the song. That's a great memory for me thanks. Next Friday why don't you check out Luba every time I see your picture I Cry. Very underrated Canadian female artist. I know you'll like it
This song is absolutely beautiful!!
I remember my mother singing this song to my baby brother at bedtime. Beautiful memories. Miss and love you Mom ❤
Great reaction again, you two! Serious nostalgia from this one. My mom had the 45 record ... and I must have heard this a million times after she bought it. Beautiful voice and incredible production :)
My favorite by her.
I think the first time I fell in love with the voice on the radio . . . was hers. I like Boz Scaggs version too, but Rita's voice just melts you.
One of my fav ladies from our era. I love her duets with her ex, Kris Kristofferson, too. I love the tone of her voice! ❤
the next rita coolidge song should be your love have lifted me higher. such an amazing upbeat melody.
One of my all time favorite singers welcome to the rabbit hole of Rita Coolidge she's a beast
Oh yeah! I've not heard this in years! Love it! ✌❤🎶
Such an excellent song. Your songs choices are so very varied and it's great you got around to this perennial gem.
Your love higher and higher is a must listen too
Great singer! Wonderful, intimate song.
Rita Coolidge is now 78 years old and she is still performing. I think this song involves this singer songwriter Boz Scaggs. It has its flavor.😊
70s were definitely bomb! Love this song!!!💖
This song, and other songs like this from the 70s I l always listen to go to sleep at night my radio stayed on alll night.
I can't believe I was going to suggest this song, and now here it is. I've read some articles about her ( not all of them happy; she really worked hard in the industry), but she's also a great songwriter ❤
This is an all around beautiful song. I haven’t heard it in years, but my mind remembered each and every note.
Edited to add: there is video of Rita, Kris, and Cher singing a country medley on TH-cam that you might be interested in as you made the comparison to Cher.
This is such a beautiful tune. Another great one she did was 'Id rather Leave While I'm In Love'
Both really lovely tunes delivered in a subtle way that is so moving. You have excellent taste.
We love Rita
