The whole Silk Degrees album is fire! Truly one of the great works of popular art of the 20th century. Boz never really reached those heights again but what a monumental album. By the way, Harri, you're probably referring to Rita Coolidge's hit cover version of this.

boz's vocal is so plaintive and yearning here, it's one of my favourites by him. the other is "harbour lights", another lament but a tone cooler, wistful but doesn't quite bring the tears, for me at least.
boz is at his best with mournful ballads like these, i think.
also: as others have said, there was another hit version of this song by rita coolidge in the late '70s that may be where you've heard this melody before. i loved her cover also.

This is one of those rare times where an artist writes a song but doesn’t release it as a single and right at the same time another artist asks if they can record it and then they make it a big hit. They’re not really covers in the sense that it’s done much later but almost at the same time or year. Another example is Pat Benatar singing John Cougar’s “I Need A Lover”.

By the comments you would think this is Boz Scaggs only album. He was outstanding right from his early days and probably had 4 or 5 successful albums before this one.. He went to England (Europe) for a while and was a big hit their as well. This album is one of his greats, but he has done some really good ones of late as well. How about his early works "Moments" and his "Slow Dancer" albums.

There were so many great songs on the "Silk Degrees" album, which was a smash hit. I didn't know anyone who didn't buy that album and this was one of the songs on that album, but they could release ALL of the songs as singles so this one fell thru the cracks, then Rita Collage released it as a single and her version was a #1 hit. It stood at the top of the charts for quite some time, as I recall?

Hi Harri, the song you were thinking of was Lowdown, co-written by Boz Scaggs and David Paich. David Paich, an excellent arranger, keyboard player and songwriter, along with bassist David Hungate and drummer Jeff Porcaro, went on to be founder members of Toto. Paich's father was Marty Paich, who was, like his son, an arranger, composer, leader, pianist and producer, who worked with a lot of big names in Jazz and Swing music. Perhaps his most notable collaboration, was with Mel Torme, The Velvet Fog, whose M.D., he was and many of Torme's hits were recorded with The Marty Paich Dectet. Boz Scaggs, is from Texas and one of his early gigs was with The Steve Miller Band, he left and went solo and played many styles of music during his long career. Silk Degrees, the album that this track and Lowdown, were from, was recorded in February 1976 and was his breakthrough album. Some people will try and tell you it was the only worthwhile thing he did, nothing could be further from the truth, anything with his name on is worth a listen. To come a little more up to date, he still gigs and records with a band called The Dukes Of September, which includes Steely Dan's Donald Fagen, The Doobie Brothers' Michael Mc Donald along with The Steely Dan Touring Band, who I think you would love. Keep up with the great work, stay safe. Best wishes from London, England.
