Yes- a much missed airliner and better looking aesthetically than the Airbus A380 in my view, with a much more harmonious less bulgy look. I am glad that Korean Air Lines still sends the B 747-8 to London Heathrow. (this is an excellent video by the way)
I miss the -200s, but more than that I really miss the 1980s/90s livery. The current black one doesn't cut it for me (although I understand the thinking behind it)
Great to hear the dulcet tones of Paul Brennan (also a Radio NZ news reader) outlining his obvious passion for aircraft spotting. Flew in a 747 Akld to Raro in 1986, no idea what aircraft number it was. Unfortunately, I was so tired I remember very little of the journey, because I was fast asleep for probably 90% of it! Farewell to a great aircraft.
THAT WAS SOOOOOOO COOL! What a great video. 10 stars! I do miss the old NZ livery, new one is nice, but I flew the old so many more times. The old RB211s had a great sound didn't they!
I flew on this aircraft when my folks moved to oz from Fiji in 1989. I was 6 and it was my first flight - still remember walking out at nadi intl on the first leg to Auckland and just admiring its beauty..great video!!
I remember went i was 15 years old, my family and i were travelling on an Air New Zealand 747-219B, (Rego: ZK-NZX), way back in 1983 bound for the beautiful Cook-Islands in, (Rarotonga), as the plane was departing at the Auckland Airport, i also saw another Air New Zealand 747-219B, that was parked up at the time, and that one was (Rego: ZK-NZV), we'll miss these great iconic planes, and a "BIG" thank you to both you and Air New Zealand for sharing this great piece of New Zealand's history.
Wonderful video. My father was senior check flight engineer with Qantas, and he was involved with 747 flight training for TE f/e crews. I recall many trips to Auckland and to Mascot for flight simulators. Oh, and I love this classic livery. it looked awesome on the DC10s and 747s.
Fantastic video mate. I used to live under the Rwy 25 approach in Sydney and distinctly remember the Air NZ 747-200B's. A personal favorite of mine. Well done.
This is a great video! I remember when ZK-NZX did the flypast of the Old Athletic Park and landing at Wellington, I was up on the hill just to the left of the Sewage Treatment plant on the left hand side of the road around past the old NAC Hanger at Wellington Airport. I raced up there and found the Airport historian sitting in a bush up there trying to get out of the southerly, it was difficult to even stand up. The landing was perfect and I got some brilliant photographs. I really miss the old Air New Zealand Teal Cheat line livery. Thanks to Paul for his excellent camera work, I have all three of the VHS tapes Paul brought out on the 737-200 25 years, Airside NZ and Perth, they are terrific!. If you can contact me some how Paul I do have some questions re some of the aircraft pictures at Wellington on the Airside NZ video.
Womderful video, liked flybys at Wellington and chat in cockpit with 747-200 captain sorry to see these old girls go, but Virgin Atlantic got a few more years use out of them I flew into Aukland back in 1982 on NZA from LAX, HNL on DC-10 great flights and wonderful cabin service . Thanks for sharing.
I really like this old liverly a lot. I flew with these twice, from SYD-AKL and CHC-SYD back in May 1988. Great airline, great service and great planes too.
With this air nz livery what type of paint was it? Always looks semi gloss almost near matte. Never seen an air nz plane in this livery looking shiny and glossy like the white on today’s planes. Or is it just because quality has improved on cameras these days?
It's sad that the Air NZ 747 era is almost over...Still the mighty 777 is just as impressive. Due to Air NZs excellent care over the years, most of it's 747-200s are still flying.
The Rolls-Royce RB211 family of engines has powered four different airliners to the best of my knowledge - the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, the Boeing 757, and of course, the Boeing 747-200 and -400.
To the best of my knowledge, the -200 was the last of the 747s to have the three-person cockpit (correct me if I'm wrong), as the later models, especially the -400, would have the two-person "glass cockpit."
Amazing video, it really pleases me to see people make this much effort and to spend that much time and dedication in making this video :-) It's sad to see the last of Air NZ's 747-419s to be phased out now :-(
They got newer Boeings, including 777-300ER You can view details of the full fleet here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_New_Zealand_fleet They seem to have a strong connection with Boeing aircraft(though don't use them exclusively) for some reason, maybe just maintenance reasons?
Original video script incorrect. Order for Boeing 747-219B were for 5 not 4... TH-cam time 1.04. Reg ZK-NZV, NZW,NZX,NZY,NZZ ordered and delivered. Have been passenger on trans pacific and trans Tasman on the Air New Zealand Boeing 747-219B during 1983 December between Sydney and Los Angeles returning from LAX to SYD in February 1984. My flight with Air New Zealand from SYD to LAX December 1980 returning to SYD in February 1981 with the DC10 was better. Noted standards of cabin services dropped with introduction of Boeing 747-219B at the time on board in 1983. Being a passenger with Air New Zealand between Australia and New Zealand across the ditch with the DC10 late 1970's service was superior. Yes times have changed. NZ is not TE as in the past. Miss the Big 10. Ansett 727.
very good video amigo,I really enjoy it,let me ask u something ,what means 747 219? why not only 747 200? or a340 319?instead of only a340 300? thank u saludos from EL SALVADOR
The incomparable 747 was the aircraft that truly started a great partnership between Air New Zealand and The Boeing Company, which continues today with the 777-300ER and the forthcoming 787 Dreamliner.
A lovely aircraft but Air NZ flew them around the world half empty as the market here was just not big enough. They have been broke too many times to count..
thank you!!!
I miss the old 747s.
Thumbs up if you agree!

I Always love Pauls material, especially his voiceover work
Great to hear the dulcet tones of Paul Brennan (also a Radio NZ news reader) outlining his obvious passion for aircraft spotting. Been on this very plane when it was leased to airtours for a summer in 98 !
B747 is the Queen of the Skies 👍🇳🇿
I TRAVELLED FROM AUCKLAND TO BRISBANE ON 3RD MARCH 1985 ON ZK-NZZ. IT WAS A HUGE THRILL FOR A 20 YEAR OLD.
THAT WAS SOOOOOOO COOL! What a great video. 10 stars! I do miss the old NZ livery, new one is nice, but I flew the old so many more times. The old RB211s had a great sound didn't they!

2:19 7:33 great takeoff and landing
It's funny how Air New Zealand was a latecomer to the 200B's, yet one of the first for the 400's.
This Old Spiral 7:57 engine rb211 from Air New Zealand 1999 to Virgin Atlantic 747-200 2005
Love the -200

Neil Ross LP
This video is gold
Hey there, Paul. Love your work here.... and on RNZ. Cheers, Mate. Greg.
Cathay had also the same model as Air New Zealand. But it was 40 years ago. All 747 have been retired from Cathay's Air Fleet.
Outstanding video. Loved flying Air New Zealand when I lived in Australia.
Fantastic video mate. I used to live under the Rwy 25 approach in Sydney and distinctly remember the Air NZ 747-200B's. A personal favorite of mine. Well done.
I love the Air NZ 747-400 I miss them already , I recently flew Emirates A380 is an amazing plane as well
This is a great video!

Wow, how many stories high is the cockpit?
Your voice is magnificent!
Paul reads the news on Radio NZ now days
Flew on one of these when they had the Dallas Fort Worth signage - just in front of the upper deck windows. AKL - LAX via Fiji.
Do you have more of these legendary birds?
I really like this old liverly a lot. I flew with these twice, from SYD-AKL and CHC-SYD back in May 1988. Great airline, great service and great planes too.
Flew on Aotea from Auckland to Vancouver in 1988, spent a couple of days there then got on a shabby British airways 747-100 to Heathrow.
Thanks heaps for creating this short film. It's fantastic.
Great to capture hstory. Beautiful bird...well done.
Man, that rotating beacon light of classic 747 is very catchy
Aotea, Tainui, Takitimu, Te arawa and all white Tokomaru visited Nagoya RJNN old days.
Beautiful bird. I flew on the Takitimu many times.
Thank you very much for filming this. It is great.
ANZ Best colours ever
Beautiful aircraft and gorgeous livery as it were back then. I flew SYD-AKL and CHC-SYD back in 1988. Wonderful flights, great food and service!
Nice plane I travelled with 747-200 in 1994 when I visited lovely and beautiful NZ.
Epic, loved it, thanks for taking the time to make this, The person who did not like this video either works for Airbus or was bitten by a Kuala :P
These used to have a strong rumble, when they took off on the LAX-AKL route. It was almost as loud as a DC-8 63 rumble.
With this air nz livery what type of paint was it? Always looks semi gloss almost near matte. Never seen an air nz plane in this livery looking shiny and glossy like the white on today’s planes. Or is it just because quality has improved on cameras these days?
Great Video Of One Of The Great 747 - 200
I prefer this livery. To the point and not cluttered.
Handi-cams weren't 4k but their sound pickup was impressive.
Great work. Thanks Paul.
This video is amazing
As of 30 June 2012 Air New Zealand still operates 2 Boeing 747s. Albeit that they are B747-400 series.
219 is the Boeing customer number for Air NZ orders so their 737s are 737-319s, 767s 767-319ER and so on.
It's sad that the Air NZ 747 era is almost over...Still the mighty 777 is just as impressive. Due to Air NZs excellent care over the years, most of it's 747-200s are still flying.
Many thanks for uploading and sharing!
Great footagem love the sound of the old style RB211's
The Rolls-Royce RB211 family of engines has powered four different airliners to the best of my knowledge - the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, the Boeing 757, and of course, the Boeing 747-200 and -400.

John Eddy the 300 also had three crew, all that changed once the cockpit changes arrived with the 400 series.
Amazing video, it really pleases me to see people make this much effort and to spend that much time and dedication in making this video :-) It's sad to see the last of Air NZ's 747-419s to be phased out now :-(
what is there not to like about them? whuld you prefer other engines
There is nothing better when on a long haul flight home to see the sight of the KORU sitting on the tarmac.
Great footage. Thank you. Will Air New Zealand be getting the newer larger A380??
No
They got newer Boeings, including 777-300ER
You can view details of the full fleet here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_New_Zealand_fleet
They seem to have a strong connection with Boeing aircraft(though don't use them exclusively) for some reason, maybe just maintenance reasons?
They stopped production of the A380 due to lack of sales
when planes were real planes...still remember NZ's DC10 707's and the 747-100 especially the first one arriving into NZ ...
A really great video. Very impressive.
I remember when the pride and joy of ANZ (then known as NAC) were 4 Vickers Viscount 820's. I'm a little thin on top now.
747.the most ever decorate airplane..beautiful queen of d skies..
I wish I was able to see these masterpieces
How long did Virgin Atlantic operate the ex-Air New Zealand 747-200s?
Original video script incorrect. Order for Boeing 747-219B were for 5 not 4... TH-cam time 1.04. Reg ZK-NZV, NZW,NZX,NZY,NZZ ordered and delivered. Ansett 727.
Awesome planes the best
Absolutely fantastic!!
Just found out Anz had Boeing 747s
Are you sure the -200s were still in service with ANZ in 1999?
Simply AMAZING!!
At 6.30, why is the artificial horizon on the piss? How does that work?
Vacuum and gyros are turned off.
Fantastic
very good video amigo,I really enjoy it,let me ask u something ,what means 747 219? why not only 747 200? or a340 319?instead of only a340 300? thank u saludos from EL SALVADOR
because the avionics aren't powered up I would think
So geautiful!!
So beautiful!!
Huge!!!
I lo e that plane so much!! Great work sir!!
It was delivered on my birthday (is I was born in 81) I was born in 2008
Hi
ZK-NZZ, at last he painted all white ever I seen.
The incomparable 747 was the aircraft that truly started a great partnership between Air New Zealand and The Boeing Company, which continues today with the 777-300ER and the forthcoming 787 Dreamliner.
Spent many hours on these in the 80s crossing the Pacific .
That's the one
OLD SCHOOL
A lovely aircraft but Air NZ flew them around the world half empty as the market here was just not big enough. They have been broke too many times to count..
Not on the flights I was on they were chocka.
I preferred this livery to the “Pacific Wave” livery that came about in 96’ or the god awful current one they have now.
I LOVE THE 747, but i don't like the Rolls Royce Engines.
The RB211 engines were good in it's day, was also installed on the Lockheed Tristar's as well.
The Pratt & Wittney JT9D Engines are a helluva lot Better.
Hmmmmmmm...... crash again
What
