Loaning large sums USED to be a norm back in the day before easy access to funds... When cash was at home, invested, or at a bank... Now its Very Very hard to understand how and why gamblers loan large amounts... I understand in private games where cash isnt on the table and debts settled within 3 days, but loaning isn't necessary as much.

I have been playing poker for years, I did take out loans several times. However, I only took loans out if I had enough in my safety deposit box to cover it. Usually when I took out a loan I paid it back within one or two days. Taking out these 6 figure loans seems really insane to me.
Tom still one of the biggest legends. Dude it's poker, a lot of people lend money to each other. For example giving Isildur1 a Million when he is on tilt do you think is a good idea?
It could be Tom Dwan is broke and relies on backers. So only has a small piece of himself in those big games, or he lives a high maintenance lifestyle. So his winnings are barely enough to keep him afloat.
Tom lost his whole bankroll against Chinese poker players while he was in Macau. Tom thought he could beat Chinese poker players ended up losing his whole bankroll.
I’ve been taking a break from poker since 2019, including watching it or keeping up with poker news, and I knew there was going to be drama with Tom Dwan when I looked him up. Though I figured he’d just be broke. His style of poker isn’t very sustainable
Now matter how good your run at Poker, long term majority will fail. I'm speaking as a former professional poker player for over 22 years. Hit, invest and run.
Its not as simple as Tom owing ppl, hes disputing these debts and it seems like hes staking and being free rolled as well, "somewhere in between" is such a cop out, hes probably way closer to the honourable side
So, let me see if I get this straight; this Peter-guy has been staked by Tom, and subsequently lost millions of Tom's dollars. But some of the tournaments he played Tom didn't pay him back the buy-ins yet, and that is what this is about? Right?
Tom is an addict. Addicts always find excuses for themselves. Don't play poker, the game is dead anyway. The sites grab too much rake. Real time assistance and collusion is normal in poker nowadays. Don't play. Focus on something else, something more productive, something better.
I like your channel but man, you will leave a picture of someone up for 30 seconds and the show an important tweet and leave it up for 2 seconds. I know we can pause but that gets annoying, why not leave the tweets on screen and lower the time you leave useless filler photos of like Nik petting his cat. Just feedback for ya,
Lol yeah I could have done that better in this one. There wasn’t one tweet that was super important (Peter had a lot) so I was relying more on what I knew overall about them
Dwan will pay back the meat but gets butthurt over the juice, that's the simple answer. If he agrees to the interest, that's 100% on him and he must pay it. Yeah, I understand that oftentimes rates in the gambling world can be quite predatory, but I strongly doubt he's agreeing to those types of terms (such as 5% per month). But if people are loaning money without specifying *_exact_* terms, that's on the guy fronting the loan, even if Tom is taking a while to pay back the principle. Don't loan money if you can't handle business and/or can't communicate well.
Most poker players who don’t have a career to back them just poker end up doing it. Brand Booth , JC Tran, chino Reem several players who has early success before the internet
Look. Top players are super smart. That is why we created basic laws for loan contracts and courts to uphold them. If I say to you, hey, loan me $100K on a handshake, You would laugh in my face. Enough said.
If this was back in the day, Tom Dwan wouldn't be around to comment because he would have been made to disappear. Pay your damn debts if you owe them. Pretty simple.
So wait. Did Tom back Peter in poker and Peter lost 1.6 million of Tom's money? But that doesn't matter unless Tom backs Peter again and then if Peter won he would start paying off the 1.6 million with those winnings? And this process protects a backer? I clearly do not understand.
It's impossible to understand without knowing the terms of their agreement. Usually staking is just a loss if the player doesn't win. It's the backer betting the stake for x% of the profits. They decided to make it more complex and is impossible to understand without knowing the specifics. It sounds like they didn't come to any specific understanding about make up if their backing relationship ended.
He does owe Peter. The thing is even if Peter is deep in make-up dwan only has three options: He can keep putting Peter into games with hopes that he recoups the makeup (peter can't profit until he gets out of makeup) He can end the deal with Peter and be out the 1.6 million He can end the deal with Peter by selling the makeup to another investor that would take Peter on as a horse. There is not a world where it is okay for tom to just not reimburse peter for tournament entries he had action on
This follow-up video took FAR longer than expected due to how difficult the interviews were to get through haha enjoy... #grumpy

I watched the HCL interview and it really is not in his best interest to speak for himself. He’s an awkward dude and I think his brain works so differently than everyone else’s and he ends up just making no sense. The more he talks the more he confuses everyone and just digs himself a deeper hole.
ty Alex for making it clear i was so confused by the amount of people hes in debt too. Tom owes people money end of story. bro cant keep his word its crazy
I have been playing poker for years, I did take out loans several times. However, I only took loans out if I had enough in my safety deposit box to cover it. Usually when I took out a loan I paid it back within one or two days. Taking out these 6 figure loans seems really insane to me.
Cap
Tom still one of the biggest legends. Dude it's poker, a lot of people lend money to each other.
For example giving Isildur1 a Million when he is on tilt do you think is a good idea?
It could be Tom Dwan is broke and relies on backers. So only has a small piece of himself in those big games, or he lives a high maintenance lifestyle. So his winnings are barely enough to keep him afloat.
Tom lost his whole bankroll against Chinese poker players while he was in Macau. Tom thought he could beat Chinese poker players ended up losing his whole bankroll.
Why is your second sentence just a synonym for the first sentence? In other words, you only needed one sentence.
Because he is chinese
Same applies to you 😂
hahahahm.... lollll@@DeVinschi
@@MrHahaJayuman😂😂😂 see what he did? 😂😂😂
Tom Dwan did not age well, he seems like he's has some sort of a condition
Hasn’t aged well at all. It’s been a slow burn from astute genius poker phenom to high stakes gambling addicted degenerate

I have never seen a comment section complain to this degree. Well done.
Stirring the pot 🍯
They need start writing these deals on paper.
I’ve been taking a break from poker since 2019, including watching it or keeping up with poker news, and I knew there was going to be drama with Tom Dwan when I looked him up. Though I figured he’d just be broke. His style of poker isn’t very sustainable
Hellmuth always told him years ago that we'll see where you're at in 20 years kid.
@@curthennig9448 I think I remember hearing him say that, but to be fair, anyone who beats hellmuth gets that speech lol
@@curthennig9448well he made cash poker watchable unlike helmuth
Tom doesnt owe anyone anything anymore. Just leave him alone. Holy F!
so the best poker players are in debt?
You can't make 2 million on a live stream and not pay back your backers. Obviously, you're gonna look like the bad guy.
I don't trust the insight of a man who somehow positions his face to the camera in the most unflattering angles possible.

Now matter how good your run at Poker, long term majority will fail. I'm speaking as a former professional poker player for over 22 years. Hit, invest and run.
he comes across as insane in these ramblings. do you owe the people money? yes/no .. what the heck is he talking
Its not as simple as Tom owing ppl, hes disputing these debts
and it seems like hes staking and being free rolled as well, "somewhere in between" is such a cop out, hes probably way closer to the honourable side
Sounds like he's been living his whole life off loans from others. No interest, no time limit on repayment, and no beatings.
Alex, there is a really loud flag in your background. You might want to turn it down a bit next time.
Its a complicated backing issue
Yes
So what can we gleam from all of this? Have your staking and gambling pieces held in escrow or something of that nature
This was a brilliant summary, thanks for the video !
Don't lend money to gamblers ladies and gentlemen. Or better don't lend money to anyone.
Typical behavior for someone trying to dodge debt.
There wasn’t one tweet that was super important (Peter had a lot) so I was relying more on what I knew overall about them
@@AlexDuvall… I rather enjoyed the cat takes. 🎉❤
Nah i liked the cat too.
You've really got some people worked up. Malcontents make for good engagement! 🤘🏻
Hey Alex I see the Maryland flag in the background. Do you play at Maryland L!VE?
Sounds like Tom was robbing Peter to pay Paul
Robbing Peter to pay Jungle 😂
Most poker players who don’t have a career to back them just poker end up doing it. Brand Booth , JC Tran, chino Reem several players who has early success before the internet
@@UnknownWarriorZz 😂😂
The "Addict" shows its true colors when his "excuses" are worse than his card play.
Did these guys lend Dwan money without a signed promissory note? That is foolish.
I hate that one of my biggest inspirations in poker has gone down this path
When are people going to learn that being a great poker player mean you are a great person
He looks exactly like a friend i know runs from his debts and people have to keep asking and chasing him for their money this is mess up
They all got durrrrrrrred..
Loans are a bank service, I don't care how close you are to me, if you need a loan go to a bank.
Degens lending to other degens. What's new?
Since we talking about it Tom owes me $4.54 and 2 sticks of double mint gum. I want my money man! Where’s my money man?
It sounds like they didn't come to any specific understanding about make up if their backing relationship ended.
so my parent taught be never be a borrower or a lender, mom and dad you are so wise
I'm still confused, does Tom owe Peter or not? 🤔
He does owe Peter. The thing is even if Peter is deep in make-up dwan only has three options:
He can keep putting Peter into games with hopes that he recoups the makeup (peter can't profit until he gets out of makeup)
He can end the deal with Peter and be out the 1.6 million
He can end the deal with Peter by selling the makeup to another investor that would take Peter on as a horse.
There is not a world where it is okay for tom to just not reimburse peter for tournament entries he had action on
