      Nick Wright isn't good enough, both at poker and his sports takes

    • @theperfectdoug
      @theperfectdoug 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      He got it into his head that she had either A K or two spades to finish the flush. He was pretty passive that whole hand. He should have fired off another bet on the flop, just to see where Maria was at. Wright had no info. That was kind of the story of the hand. She raised pre-flop, Nick called, Nick checked the flop, she followed (no info), Nick makes a small bet on the turn, she follows with no hesitation (again, very little info or the possibility she is chasing a flush or straight), the queen comes out so Nick can now be beaten by an opponent with A K and it's a spade so if she was chasing a spade flush she just got it. Nick checks, Maria makes a bet nearly the size of the pot and Nick imagines the worst has happened.
      But personally if that was me, there's no way I'm folding. I'm already invested, I've got the straight, I at least need to learn if my instincts were right or not.

    I think Daniels obviously right. I also think Tony G has summed it up well. Tony G plays people and poker so he knows damn well whats hes talking about especially with his long history with Phil. I think without question hes good. He refuses to learn and play into others properly. Thats not a bad thing but its not good either. And being neutral in poker is technically a bad thing all in all but refusing to play into people isnt always bad if the game plan works, its just his game plan doesnt target the greats. Ivey is without a doubt the best because he never stops improving, experimenting, studying, trying, and most importantly enjoying. Mathmatically, socially, psychologically, everything. As long as Ivey can have fun i don't think he will get worse either wildly enough so i dont think phil will ever be "better" (or just better imo).

    Bryn Kenney has 65 million in earnings. Although he is in the age of the poker boom in potential earnings, he has won the most money. Nobody considers him the GOAT. That said, all around ability to win different types of games, it is Ivey. Bracelets obviously for Phil. 17 is a lot for only excelling in one game truly.

    I dont think Phil Ivy ever considers himself the GOAT, and assuming he doesnt cause if he did for a moment, he knows his game would slip. In fact, I believe Phil Ivy is, in his mind, striving to be the GOAT but never believes he could reach the zenith of the game.

    Daniel is right. I'm just a random guy on the internet,but I've watched a lot of poker over the years. I've never seen hellmuth do the things that guys like Phil ivey and Daniel negreanu do at the table. Phil is a great player. But the game has evolved and Phil hasn't been able to keep up like the other guys.

      @juicybear1986 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @jasonlinton9902 there's definitely an argument to be made for that. If you are basing it off of bracelets won then j would have to look at how many tournaments he had played in to win his 17 vs someone like Phil ivey that has 11. Could be a situation lf quantity over quality. But regardless, Phil H is an incredible tournament player.

  • @chadster7547
    @chadster7547 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    Phil's cautious game style will generally get you deep into tournaments, and 17 WSOP bracelets is no fluke. Cash games on the other hand, are all about playing/gambling with shitty cards and sucking out for big pots.
    Hellmuth is abrasive and arrogant but his WSOP results are unmatched and his solid poker approach has made him wealthy.
    The aggressive types ala Tom Dwan , Matasow etc. wind up broke and begging for backers.

    If *Stu Ungar* wasn't a complete coke-head and if he played as much as Phil did...This conversation wouldn't even exist...
    During the 1990 WSOP Main Event, Ungar was found on the third day of the tournament unconscious on the floor of his hotel room from a drug overdose.
    *However, he had such a chip lead that* even when the dealers kept taking his blinds out every orbit, *Ungar still made the final table* and finished ninth without playing another hand, pocketing $25,050... *INSANE!!!! Just think about this...*
    I feel this is like saying *Wayne Gretzky* is the GOAT of hockey....
    On paper he is, *BUT* imagine if *Mario Lemieux* didn't get any cancer and/or played in a team as good as the Oilers in the 80s ???
    Same thing with *Larry Bird* ... He doesn't have the best NBA statistic, on paper he is not the GOAT, but like the Godfather *Pat Riley* said once:
    *“If I had to choose a player to take a final shot to win a game, I’d choose Jordan... But if I could pick one to shoot to save my life, I would pick Bird.”*
    Self proclaiming yourself the GOAT is the equivalent of a waiter asking for tip... You simply just don't do it... lol

      Great analysis and analogies. I think I'd go Lemieux, too. I was a Gilmour guy in '93. Thought he might be in the running for an Art Ross, when Mario got cancer, maybe even a Hart? I had to go refresh my memory, but...
      - 12 straight multi-point games to open the season
      - 104 points in 40 games... before he realized he had cancer
      - 56 points in 20 games... after two months of treatment for cancer
      - Ended regular season with a 17 game winning streak, streak ended by a tie. I miss those.
      Cancer. Wtf??? I'm still confused by that Islanders upset.

    There is a HUGE thing that nobody shoves down PH Mouth. The WSOP field was anywhere from 100-150 players for the entire tournament as opposed to today, Tens of thousands? Correct me if Im wrong

    • @onthebrink1111
      @onthebrink1111 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You are conflating the main event to every other tourney. Yes, the main event gets tens of thousands but the others usually do not. Nobody is shoving it down his throat because it is not a good argument. Daniels last wsop bracelet had around the same amount of people less than 200. Back then only the best players showed up to play in these games. Normies didn't know about the WSOP. The poker boom changed everything.

    If you have to tell people you're the greatest, then you're needing validation.
    The greatest is based on his/hers peer group opinion.
    What Phil fails to realize is that he hurts receiving the validation he desires or deserves by being a "Me, Me, Me" personality.

    • @onthebrink1111
      @onthebrink1111 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That is called an argumentum ad populum fallacy. Poker is a bit different and have far smarter people but in other sports the peer groups still vote on popularity more than skill. The top 100 in the NFL is a good example. Anyone that writes an original comment on youtube is also seeking validation and attention. People don't do it in the hopes that nobody reads it and it is ignored. They want to be told how correct they are and get likes.

    1. Phil Hellmuth would not be the leader in WSOP bracelets if Ivey played as many events.
    2. Outside the WSOP, Phil doesn't have much of a resume.
    3. He's the WORST cash game player of all the "top pros."
    4. Of the top 10 players between 1970 and 1990, probably only 1 would be able to crack the top 50 today (Stu Ungar).
    5. The field sizes are 100 times what they were when Phil won his Main Event. You can "luck" your way through a field size of less than 100.

However, I do know consistent good play when I see it. Don't take my word for it, take it from people paid to watch. Negreanu is the absolute best. I have been in several surveillance rooms watching him play and, it is never surprising to hear the operators look at each other and go WTF? in amazement when Negreanu is playing.
