I would follow the child pattern, then do one more increase so the pattern would be:
9dc
2dc around (18 dc)
2dc, dc (27 dc)
2dc, dc,dc (36 dc)
2dc, dc,dc,dc (45 dc)
2dc, dc,dc,dc,dc (54 dc)
54 dc
2dc, dc x 8 (60 dc)
2dc, dc x 9 (66 dc)
2dc, dc x 10 (72 dc)
72 dc
I would continue doing 72 dc until you reach row 17 or 18.
