    I’ve been crocheting since I was 13 years old. I’ve always hated making any hat unless it’s in the round, now at 65, I think I’ve found the perfect crocheted hat that’s not in the round! Yes, I like love this pattern and the method you used. I’ve made a few for Christmas, this morning after finishing another, husband asked when I was going to make him one because it was exactly what he wanted. 😮(yeah, that’s strange, he doesn’t usually wear any crocheted items I’ve made, but he said “I just like that style and it looks warm”. So…this hat is a huge win! 😊

    That is a great looking hat! My guys are soooo picky about their hats. Love it! Also can I say I really like that you still put photos of what your making in the box that pops up when I get notification. I dislike the new trend of just a ball of yarn with a hook stuck in it.

    How to do it if i want to make it with thinner yarn? It is sooo lovely.

    • @Vmurph
      @Vmurph 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You would do it exactly the same.
      The only difference is thinner yarns would require more chain stitches to reach the desired length. And more rows for the desired width.
      Just make a chain row long enough to go from the crown of your head to just above your eyebrows, and add add an *extra* inch or so, because the length of the chain shrinks up a little once the first two or three rows are crocheted into it.
      Oh and if you want to fold up a brim, then add an additional 3 inches for that, as well.
      And for the width (which will be the circumference) you don’t need to know the number of rows in advance. Just keep repeating the sequence of rows done in this video until it’s wide enough to fit around your head.
      PS: same goes for bulkier yarns, but opposite. Same stitch pattern, same process, just LESS chains to achieve the length, and LESS rows to achieve circumference.

    I just finished the project :)
    I had to redo it a couple times, because my stitches were too tight at first. The second time I just stopped counting because it annoyed me - big mistake! I was halfway trough and noticed the pattern doesn't work because I lost stitches.
    The third time I counted stitches and made sure my stitches are loose.
    Though my yarn was way thinner than yours...I had to use a 3mm hook. So I made 16 sets instead of 10 and I had a 73-stitches foundation chain. But it was totally worth it. It fits really well. It's super stretchy

Thank you!

    • @debbiefox6846
      @debbiefox6846 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Maybe your tension on the yarn changed. It can happen. I remember when my kids were young they would have an issue, maybe a disagreement , or I had to make dinner . I'd go deal with whatever was going on and come back to crochet. I used to notice that depending on my mood or stress level I would accidentally crochet tighter or looser. So now 24 yrs later I am able to always watch my tension and crochet the same when I go back to a project. How far off is your one side from the other? If it's definitely the same stitch count you probably could just stitch it up and the hat may even itself out. If it's a big difference you will probably need to redo the last 9 rows and check your tension as you go with the other side. If that doesn't work maybe check again to see if your count is in fact off somewhere.

    If the beginning rows of your beanie are looking more like a speed bump instead of flat like in the video, then this is for you.
    After many failures to start this beanie, I noticed that the reason it wasn't building up flat was because my stitches were too tight. I feel like I have pretty good tension- not too tight, but not too loose- and so I was confused as to why my beanie was looking like a car should be driving over it. Initially, I thought the yarn I subbed for the recommended yarn (Heartland by Lion Brand) was just incompatible. For reference, I am using Impeccable by Michael's Loops & Threads line (weight 4). I chose this yarn for its jewel tones that I thought would look nice on my guy. I am no expert on Gauge yet, but I only needed 33 stitches to reach my personal desired height of 9". With all that being said, slip stitches are tighter by nature, which meant I needed to crochet way more loosely than my normal tension to achieve flat rows. I am using the recommended H8/5mm hook (realistically, I probably could be using a bigger hook than that). But since I started with the H8 and do not want to risk sizing up in the middle of the project, I am just stretching the loop I'm pulling through my back loops larger than what I'm used to so that I'm accommodating the tightness of the slip stitches. Although this has been my own personal, hair-pulling experience, I wanted to share this in the hopes I could help even just one person because I didn't see anything like this in the comments section and it was driving me crazy. lol
    tl;dr - if your beanie is looking like a speed bump, stitch more loosely!
    Anyways, I hope this helps! Please let me know if it does! :)

    Sarah, you have created the PERFECT pattern!! I need to make a ribbed watchman's cap. Is it possible to alternate between slip stitch and single crochet? I've seen patterns that are (3 sl st, 1 sc) repeated, but the tops are so bulky. Your method is fantastic at the top.

    I've always avoided making beanies/ hats because I'm no good at making circles.
    Then I saw this video & was sold. It's so neat & so easy. Thankyou so much for this tutorial.
    I just have one silly question & would appreciate if anyone could help me out.
    So at the top, how many times are we supposed to reduce the stitches to make that neat tapering top?
    Sorry, but I couldn't understand that part & only did it once. 🫣

    Notice the lump I was referring to. It’s a loop from the CH1 of the previous row. Slipping your hook through that loop before going into the next row, prevents that.

    I have made several hats in rounds but I thought I would try this method. The stichings are easy and the final result looks very good and simple. However, after round 13 I got lost. Perhaps I need mire guidance how to proceed. I cannot visualise in my head how the final outcome as shown on the video happened. I am sure it's just me as all comments are excellent. I did repeated rounds 2 to 13 but got stock. I have unravelled all the work I did and I am giving up.

    Love this pattern. Made one for me - now my son-in-law wants one. I want to make a few rows of 'horizontal' stripes. Should not be hard, right. I could carry the yarn colors at the back. Would this work? I also plan to line hat with fleece so yarn carried should not catch on anything. Any comments welcomed.
    Thank you. You also are very thorough in pattern instructions.

    Wow 🤩 it’s beautiful but seems to be hard to make a a beginner. I have to watch this a few times before I will try to crochet alongside with you. Thank you so much 🙏😊

    Does anyone who’s tried this know about how long it took you?
    I used to do BLO SS hats with the same weight acrylic yarn with a 9mm hook and it would at least take a couple days if I sat down and powered through. I imagine it would take much longer with an H hook.
