    Identifying Silk Fabrics video: • Learning About Fabrics...
    In this installment, I create a customer visual collage, work on my color story, collage colors and textures onto figures, start thinking about fabrics, narrating everything.
    ***
    Welcome to my newest series: Watch Me Design A Fashion Collection. It's a little self-explanatory. I'll be designing a collection, sometimes I'll narrate a lot, talk you through my process, sometimes I'll just let y'all watch me work.
    I follow the Fashion Design Process I teach in schools and here on TH-cam, but this series won't be a 1 video = 1 step in the design process format. I'mma go as slow as I want!
    If you want to learn the Fashion Design Process, check out this playlist here: • Fashion Design Process

    Hello Ms. Zoe Hong you got so many fantastic videos! I was just thinking as I watched it that a cool idea for this collection may be making clothes out of interesting shapes in neutral colors and then paining over it like Alexander McQueen did on Shalom as she turned and got painted by the robots.

    I find it funny what you said about fashion forecasting. So probably those fashion houses are really paying for access to the information that a fashion forecaster is going to pass onto a buch of fashion houses. Information is power, and increasingly so.

    Hi! Your videos are so great! Approximately how long would you say it takes to create one entire project/collection for a portfolio? I'm putting together my design portfolio currently. I have a history of design experience but I went to school for global apparel industry management.. so my portfolio ended up less than artistic... I want to give myself a ballpark timeline. I have a tendency to overthink then get overwhelmed. Or skip steps because I'm rushing myself. Or freak out because I feel like I'm taking too long. So ADD. Also, I hugely, strongly, 1,000% agree with the girl below, you should definitely watch Legion. It is shot BEAUTIFULLY. So so good.

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know about one project, but I know in university, seniors are expected to have their entire portfolio completely by the end of their 15 week course. Now, this number is a bit nebulous, as different portfolio classes have different requirements and some encourage or allow students to include a reworking of an older project, which usually takes less time. And you have to assume most seniors are taking portfolio class along with other classes. Good luck!

    New subscriber here! 👋🏾 The first video I watched was your Fabrics video where you teach us about the different kinds & characteristics & man-made vs natural & it sold me. I haven’t watched any other videos or TH-camrs since. I appreciate your videos so much. I graduated from AiPH almost 10 years ago & I’m trying to refresh my memory on basically everything I was taught (& even things I wasn’t) & your videos are exactly what I needed. Boring is far from what these videos are when you want to learn (or relearn/refresh) about making the steps of creating a collection. I’ve watched some of these videos (Watch Me Design) more than once because it’s so informative & also making sure I don’t miss anything. Thank you for sharing all of this knowledge. ❤️ from Philly!

    I have a question though, Collaging can help with transfering visual ideas onto figures but, how do we transfer non visual idea (i.e constructuions, movements, feelings) directly onto figures ?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Construction belongs on flats. It's your job as a designer to visually translate feelings into tangible designs. Movement can really only be portrayed in drawing.

    Hi Zoe. Can I ask a question?does all fabric needs to be washed/pre shrieked before production.? If yes. Then why are there so many clothes needs to be dry cleaned.especially like wool?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It all depends on the fabrics used. Every single fabric has different washing instructions. Most silks and wools need to be dry cleaned. Cottons, usually not, etc etc.

    I have a question since I start to watch the whole of your series here from the beginning. I saw you took some inspiration images to do the collaging. is it possible to take some images that are not related to our inspiration or does it have to be related to our theme and inspiration.

    Just wanted to let you know that even though this series is kind of slow, I am fucking LOVING IT!!!!!!! Please please please keep on making videos in this series!!!
    Side Note/Random Thought: When you started collaging the rust and old door thingy, I really liked the sort of correlation of how you used things that were worn out and old (and thus, sometimes considered unusable,) and used that to make something fashionable for older people to wear (not that I'm calling old people "unusuable" or anything!!!), you know what I mean?

    This, I needed this. Thank You for making this video. I am currently in FASH 111 class at the Academy of Arts and I get so caught up in the research that I am struggle to understand the concept behind making a collage and drawing out a mood. Like hearing you saying not to worry about drawing and illustrating at this stage but playing with colors, shape etc...Really brought me back to the first collage assignment I did in class. I am not sure how I lost myself as the semester goes by. But bing watching up to this Watch Me Design 5, was by far the best decision I could make for myself.
    I am still learning how to translate words and research into a collection per say, but at least I know that part of the research process is to let go and just get messy.
    Thank You Zoe

    This is so great and inspiring. When I start a creative process it usually takes me sooooo long to start because the options overwhelm me, but you're reminding me that choosing and morphing them can be fun. And I really want to start making clothes for myself, and who knows, maybe later on make them for others? Anyway, this is helping me a lot, thank you so much! I love your wise, open perspective. And also, your target customer. I'm a guy and I sometimes wonder wtf I'll wear when I have my own family, and when I'm not considered a young man anymore, I won't be able to wear boring clothes just because of my age!

    Hi Zoe Im Phu . thank u for the this amazing video in yet another amazing series =) I wanna ask u if u used the 9 head figure or 10 head figure template in this video and if its an industry practice to use 10 head or 9 head most of the time for a collection for adults?
    Also, im in the process of drawing inspiration for my moodboard, gathering main ideas from French colonisation, its architectures, its colonies cultural elements and such. And the question is would you recommend that i can combine all these French ideas with visuals i collect from , say... an art exhibition of an artist from Japan.... Do you think that might be a bit too greedy and confusing for my moodboard? and if I should just concentrate on French and its colonies heritage alone =)

    I think that the line design is the strongest idea here. You could turn those lines into stitching,and stitch together materials that look/resemble the rust,minerals, and the colours would make sense in the way that the wearer could stitch their own piece and wouldn't look out of place. BTW I do that too,take pictures of textures where ever I go lol

    Yeah! I am not a fashion designer but this series makes me want to become one!
    Me and my bff actually decided we would create a fashion line just for fun.
    Also when you laugh I want to laugh too 😁

    Obsessed with this series! Giving me the inspiration to get back at designing on my own as I've recently had to drop fashion school due to finances. Love designing along side you until I can get back to it!
