    In this installment, I discuss who my customer is, why we need to define one, and then I go through my favorite book to get me in the collaging mindset: Anna Piaggi's Fashion Algebra.

    Welcome to my newest series: Watch Me Design A Fashion Collection. It's a little self-explanatory. I'll be designing a collection, sometimes I'll narrate a lot, talk you through my process, sometimes I'll just let y'all watch me work.
    I follow the Fashion Design Process I teach in schools and here on TH-cam, but this series won't be a 1 video = 1 step in the design process format. I'mma go as slow as I want!

    Not very on topic but I love your laugh. It's like a cross between a school girl giggle and a Bond villain laugh.

      Hahahahaha thank you, I get a lot of (good) comments on my laugh but I don't think anyone's ever tried to describe it before. I think it works! I'm often a combo of "excited to design" and "gleeful over my evil master plan coming together" when I'm working on a new design project.

      Most people can't remember every fleeting idea they have about their projects. I'm a big fan of writing it ALL down and then edit and finetune later and sometimes a 'bad idea' can become a good idea later.

  • @melissamybubbles6139

    This is making a connection. I had in mind what could be made into a collection. The initial inspiration was really my own practical need, and conversations I heard for thirty years among women in the children's section. I could go through pretty books to find other influences. Do you ever start with "I wish I could find x in the stores, but no one sells them?" I wondered how art nouveau artists would pick aspects of nature to imitate. The initial plan was to learn to make simple crafts and sewing projects for Etsy while learning to sew. Mass production isn't in the plan. It would be great to make enough to fund eventual aspirational fabrics to make long lasting clothes just for me, and maybe for others. Fashion is totally not something I would have even considered before now, but it's more interesting than it seemed from afar.

    Hello, Zoe! I worked as a design assistant for 3 years, and I'm looking for a fashion designer‘s job. Your videos are very helpful for me!! I was not exactly clear that how to think and do like a fashion designer, but you show us !! Those company I used to work, their designers didn't work like that! They knocked off some works from the other brand and changed the colour, fabric or details, and then made them became a collection. Well, it's an effective way but I would rather spend more time to gather inspirations like you.

    I have to make a collection for my first college graduation (I have another one in a few years) and they gave me the inspiration (Murales de Santurce, Puerto Rico) and the season (SS 2018) and I'm breaking my head trying to get inspired!! I have nothing and I need to do that ASAP. I'm gonna try to look at the pictures again to see if I get inspired after these videos of yours

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Even if someone else gave you the inspiration, you should go look at other pictures that follow the given topics (unless they told you not to do that). There are a lot of aspects to each topic that you can explore. For example, let's say the topic was roses. Some people could look at buds, fully open, or wilting flowers. You could explore decay, pressed flowers. Some people like to hang dry roses and keep them forever. They have a different visual effect than fresh ones. You could think about the language of flowers. Did you know each flower has a meaning? You could explore color theory and how different colors of roses have come to mean different things. You could pay more attention to the leaves or stems or thorns or the visual quality of a bunch of roses together. You could research the history of the iconography of the rose, you could research how roses are used medicinally, you could look at different breeds of roses etc etc etc. I recommend you see how much leniency you have with your given topic and go exploring.

  • @higherground711

    Traditional art should NEVER completely disappear. That would be a terrible shame. And what an injustice and slap in the face it would be to our long ago ancestors who gave birth to art by drawing and painting on cave walls, temple walls, papyrus etc. Digital art is cool. There are some beautiful digital works out there. But there should NEVER be a time when traditional art no longer exists. Let artists and even scribblers and doodlers always remember their roots.
    I'm not a designer and I'd love to have that fashion book you were flipping through! The collages and illustrations are amazing! I think the book would be collectible for the art alone.
    I don't really do fashion lol. Tshirt and jeans or cargo shorts mostly. Mostly dark colors blues, blacks, greys for the shirts. For the pants and shorts it's camoflage, black, grey, olive drab green. I'm always wearing some skull rings or biker rings, bad ass jewelry. I have one skull bead bracelet whose beads are made out of ox bone. Years ago and still every now and then I wear a link chain for a necklace with a pad lock on it. Yeah it's some pretty bold stuff, but it's also symbolic. For example, wearing a skull ring (Death) is actually lucky and protects you from it. Cotton and steel lol, just how I am.

    • @zoehongteaches

      Fashion Algebra by Anna Piaggi.
      EVERYONE does fashion, whether you know it or not. Your decisions to rely on this set of colors and your jewelry, and everything you just said means you 'do fashion'. You 'do fashion' every time you leave the house deciding to present yourself to the world in a certain way.

    great video!!!. .2 questions.
    is this collection designed in mind for mass production.?
    and if I am doing a limited edition collection how do you suggest i consider sizing .. ie. how many looks per size do you recommend.

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1. Yes. It won't go into production, I'm just designing for fun and for the channel, but I'm designing as if it will be mass produced.
      2. Looks per size? You're thinking about it backwards. You design the clothes with your customer's size range in mind, let's say you're going to cut sizes 14-28. You design the clothes, you make samples in your sample size, which should be your middle size, in this example, a 20 or 22. Then once you've perfected the fit of the sample, you figure out the measurements for all the larger and smaller sizes.
      And then you produce the garments, cutting different quantities per size. I recommend cutting to order, which means collecting advance orders for everything and making what you have orders for, plus a few extra. If you're not cutting to order, you would have to do your market research to see what sizes your customers are buying, but in general, the middle sizes get bought the most, while the smallest and largest sizes and are bought less.

    I am currently attempting to come up with a costume design portfolio. Do you believe keeping a customer/audience in mind while creating a portfolio is important? I feel like it's a stupid question, but I wish to know your insights.

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Costume design is a bit different. You have a couple of factors. I think the first is the story. Do your costumes reflect the story's progression and character development? How do you show personality traits in physical representation? You should focus on the script. Second, you should think about the interpretation of the script. Are you doing a classic Shakespeare or are you doing a modern interpretation? What did a outspoken, loud, angry woman wear in Shakespearean times vs how would such a woman dress now?
      In costume design, I think your 'customer' is the director and producer and what they think really interprets and elevates their overall vision for the entire production.
