Plus, commenters like that are not contributing to the discussion. So far, I haven't seen a strong argument about the mismatched technology in ZZZ.
Everyone who proposed the idea of "Ether shielding" just ate up the explanation without a second thought.
And I don't think there's a good argument for having a VCR tape for watching movies when Belle literally has a laptop running a hard drive, and a phone that runs flash storage. As I said in the video, it's all styling approach.

I heard a theory that the wide usage of analog tech is because they are less likely to be taken over by the ether, so it is more of a safety factor that makes the world use "high tech" devices very sparingly

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

It is an interesting theory. If the Ether acts like an ionizing radiation, then yes, analog magnetic tape is less likely to be damaged than SSDs. This is called Single-Event Upset where the bits in the storage can flip, causing data corruption.
The only thing that bothers me is that various devices outside of the Hollow also uses analog. And then, they have modern phones which definitely don't use tapes. Otherwise, it will be bulky as heck.
Then, most of the military stuff uses modern LCDs too, including those in HIA and on Camp Scott. If your theory is correct, then these devices should be more likely to be retro CRTs and Tapes. But they're not.

@@FeyHunt it might be simply be massively expensive to build ether resistant tech (like bangboos, the creation of which was such an achievement their inventor is ranked among the void hunters) which explains why advanced technology still exists within the HIA and Camp Scott given that these are institute operated zones what have plenty of resources on hand.
But then again given that this is just 1.0 I trust that it's not because the world building is completely nonsensical, it's just that we haven't been given enough details yet and these will be further explained as more of the story and world is revealed to us.
I feel that the technology in this game is a major plot point waiting to be covered and not just an aesthetic choice. I could be wrong but I think it's abit too early in the life of the franchise to judge.

Hey, very good video. While watching it, I was trying to find a real - yet imaginary - reason of why this differences of technologies. There is a moment, chapt 3, when the Cunning Rabbits are watching TV. It's a CRT TV. In our staff room or chambers, it's also a CRT TV. The only flat screens are from staff room's PC or more "company" type of building (like the metro or some shops in Lumina). So maybe, as a pure fantasy, It could be that flat-screen are expensive ? In the same chapter 3, when Nicole receive a specific text - without spoilers - she does not even have a smartphone, it's an old flip phone, and we know how much she cares about money, so maybe she would not even buy a smartphone/flat-screen phone because of the price ?
I know this idea is a bit far-fetched, but we don't see a lot of flat-screen, and we don't see a lot of phones neither. We also know that our store is not that successful only because Belle and Wise were not really into it, yet, they had no problem to buy all their tech equipments & HDD build, so the work as proxy seems to be quite good, and from Nicole's POV, quite extensive, as in prologue, Billy even thought that she would let Andy and him die because Phaethon was expensive. They could have began with low-tech CRT screens/low-end PC, and upgrade with time as Phaethon was the biggest proxy in the city, which could explain why they have these kind of screens ?
Well in the end, nice video, it was just a YT recommendation, but it was fun to think about this world-buiding, well-played !

@@Haykeau Hey, thanks for the food for thought!
There two interpretations about this weird LCD phenomenon in ZZZ.
One, this game is located somewhere in the 80s-2000s from the Cassette Futurism trope. If so, it does make sense that LCD is a new display on the market and makes it so damn expensive.
But the only problem is... the level of quality of all LCD technologies in New Eridu is 2010s at the very least. It's not just the screen tech, the amount of technology they can compact into their smartphones just doesn't exist in the 80s-2000s. And we're not even talking about the VR displays, which either must be so crappy or way even better than in real life.
My second interpretation is just that ZZZ is set in the futuristic 2040 with a weird timeline where VCR and CRT becomes so good, competitive with LCDs and USB drives, and widely supported by hardcore audience.
The biggest proof is that the siblings just prefer CRT for their movies, but they uses LCDs for their PCs and HDD, if you look at Belle's laptop in her room or Wise's sick gaming setup.
As for the AI, I think it's just common trope in retro-futurism where the people in the past just invented AI before anything else. Even though the implication would be insane if you think about it. It's not just Billy, all the Bangboos are also there. They must be running the most insane NVIDIA 8090s in those tiny bodies 😂😂

It reminds me a bit the Fallout serie, where they have AI, inifnite power but still have weird CRT TV 30 or 40 years after our own time. When I look back to our technological development, when you had the first smartphone, first flat screens, first LCD screens, every constructors went mad about it and went full R&D. But in the end, the style of the game is really refreshing, to have this kind of CRT revolution, it's a really cool artistic direction. Anyway, you've won a new sub, so just continue on this, it was really cool to watch :)

This actually applies to most fictional concepts. Take any cool ability or superpower from a work of fiction and try to dissect it and think about how it works on a deeper, more detailed level, and your head will start spinning. Fiction works because we suspend our disbelief and accept that the fantastical elements are held together by the assumption that we won't question it. Sometimes these disparities are more obvious, like the cassette tapes, CRTs, flat screens, and smartphones, but they apply to almost everything, even stuff you've never thought of before. That's why so many abilities in fiction are called "magic": by definition, they cannot be explained by rational, logical, or scientific thought.
    Some brain-bending examples for thought:
How does telekinesis work? How does your brain know the parameters of the object you're trying to pick up? What if you can't see the full object? Do you even have to be able to see the object?
What about teleportation? Your body is taking up space. If you teleport somewhere without replacing the space that you leave, you would create a vacuum that air would rush to fill. And air takes up space, too. Teleportation is more likely to actually be switching your body with whatever matter is where you are teleporting to. So if you teleport underwater, shouldn't the space you were at get the water you just replaced? And how does your brain know exactly what place in space you want to teleport to? What if you mess it up? The world is spinning too. If you teleport into space, do you keep the velocity you were spinning around the earth at?
How does flight even work? What exactly is superman doing to make himself fly around? Is it more like exclusively self-targeting telekinesis?
    You get the idea lol

@@dangangalaxy9759 Hey there! You are raising two very interesting discussion topic about "suspension of disbelief" and "versimilitude".
Suspension of disbelief varies wildly from genre to genre, and it depends on the settings. In fantasy, we have learned to accept magic very easily when we see people flinging fireballs at each other. We no longer question it.
Part of it is subjective, of course. But when it comes to ZZZ, since its setting is so close to our reality, I find it harder to suspend my disbelief that the technology on this world is so messed up. This kind of breaks immersion.
Imagine if in real life right now, everyone has phones and laptops... But every movie is always stored in VCR tapes. Like WHY? That's ZZZ for you.
At the very least, I have to question the logic behind it. Maybe there's some worldbuilding quirks that is interesting to think about. Similar to how in Dune spitting is a sign of utmost respect because their world is entirely desert.
Of course, not everyone is like me. In this video I was looking at it from the angle of "well, that's interesting". And I come out with the explanation that they just want to have retro tech aesthetic without actually being in the 80s.

Most gadgets can be easily corrupted due to them functioning on ETHER . Yes they mine the Ether for their gadgets it is stated in the lore aswell when you see people doing contraband, and ether source is a very EXPENSIVE thing since it can boost gadgets to limitless capabilities but at the cost of being corrupted by corruption.
If you played the story through chapter 2 at least when we have the Belobog industry Ark you will see how literally all the machineries got corroded instantly at the last fight due to high lvls of ether.
The old gadgets functioning on the old ways aka batteries,plug-ins are the safest since they dont rely on Ether to function.
Thats basically the reason behind the old gadgets mostly seen in the civilization.
Hope this clariffied some missunderstandings ^_^.

These people somehow ONLY use VCR tapes when watching their movies, when they can easily copy their movies with USB sticks or watch it on their phone and laptop.
Sources: In the interlude chapter where we meet Zhu Yuan and Qingyi, Wise said that PubSec gave away free movies, but it's all tapes. Also in the recent rhythm game event, everyone wants their VCR player fixed. There's never been a single case where people copy movies through anything other than VCR tapes.

They don't want even a 1:1000 chance that their weapons won't fire because of an error in a recent Windows version. This is an IRL example of the military preferring old tech over new tech for reliability reasons.
My point is, that I doubt that the military in New Eridu will prefer modern tech just because of the off-chance that the shielding fails in the middle of combat. Instead, I think they will be more likely to use the shielding and exclusively use retro tech just because they are less likely to get corrupted.
On another note, I haven't been able to find the direct sources in the game explaining this "retro vs modern" tech. Where can I find it in the game?

It is an interesting theory. If the Ether acts like an ionizing radiation, then yes, analog magnetic tape is less likely to be damaged than SSDs. This is called Single-Event Upset where the bits in the storage can flip, causing data corruption.
The only thing that bothers me is that various devices outside of the Hollow also uses analog. And then, they have modern phones which definitely don't use tapes. Otherwise, it will be bulky as heck.

      Then here is some explaining:
all CPUs can be corrupted by ether, ether protection is expensive.
For military tech - its fine, but for entertainment ? nah, better use analog TVs which have no CPUs to be corrupted, and what they can display? only analog tapes and discs.
Also, its a lot safer, which is shown in the story - one flash drive and they lost years of work for account, while analog stuff is fully safe.
And finally - they complain about electricity bills, because PCs require extra for ether protection, making analog TVs more cost efficient.

@@Siolioli I find so many problems with your theory.
      - What about phones then? Phones do have CPUs in them, even flip phones like Nicole's.
      - Nothing is safe. Everything can be corrupted, even non-electronics. That's why Billy stores his movie poster in an Ether-resistant strongbox. Similar to Corin's mirror and Anton's lintroller. These strongboxes are those you find in the C41 Hollow.
      - Ether protection comes in many forms, like plating in W-Engines or coating like paints. The electricity bill has nothing to do with it.

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

That's not how it works. VCR is just a data storage type. It's basically a worse hard disk. The proper analogue in our current time is like saying that hard drive is better than SSD because it's less hackable.
What's hackable is the operating system and data inside of the computer. And despite showing all the retro tech, their computer processor are beyond modern hardware. So if they choose to run on tapes, it will only slow their file transfer down.
Saying that old devices have better security is just... not true.
That also doesn't work with LCDs vs CRT TVs. It's just a display monitor. You can easily use CRT in our modern time if you have the adapter for it, but most people choose not to due to its image quality.

Plus it's heavily implied that all of your level up materials are used to make movie clips. The whole story is turned into movies like in the video archive.
As for the encryption... it could mean anything really. Encryption can be done at different levels, even ones that can be easily hackable.

If you play around a bit more, there will be some information about how high and advanced technology is easily corroded by the ether, which I believe is also the reason we really don't see too many new TVs/monitors. in the game because to prevent them from being easily corroded, they will be very expensive
In addition, our era in real life is considered the old era of games, and at the same time it is the era of the 6 void hunters.
I think games like Fallout, although set in the near future, still use a lot of old-fashioned items

Notice the amount of flatscreen LCDs and ipad in there. And in the description it is mentioned that Plating Agents are often used to protect technology items from corrosion (or I believe).
From then on, I believe my thesis is quite correct, because to plate high-tech items, a lot of quality plating materials will be needed, so the price will also be higher. We don't know too much about the Wise brothers' past. so I also think that using antiques is their hobby. Old TVs will be quite easy to plate for protection, but a new TV will have more complex components, thereby increasing the quality and price.
