      Yes! It's a creative solution for a monetary reason.
      It's pretty obvious that Hoyo just doesn't want any more Genshin-level games in their catalog. Genshin does give them big money, but it's VERY EXPENSIVE to run. Creating a new playable region every couple of months is just so expensive. I'd bet they spend at least 200 million USD per region.
      That's why their latest games, Star Rail and ZZZ tried their best to limit the amount of work required for artists. And it seems to work pretty well. Star Rail makes more than Genshin while keeping the production cost down.
      The problem is, I am very bored on Star Rail's world design. ZZZ solves the storytelling boredom by using four different mediums of storytelling: CG cutscenes, in-world conversation, Visual Novels, and comic strips. All of them are relatively low cost and keep things fresh.

      I think so too! In fact, I believe that the development team of ZZZ invests the budget wisely between environment and animation, and so on. The idea of using TVs as a means of travel is a great idea to save time on creating map areas. We want quality, not quantity, and ZZZ is delivering that with creativity

      There's a good quote about this.
      "Limitations Breed Creativity"
      By limiting resources you force developers to innovate and find creative workarounds towards problems that they can't just throw money at. A lot of iconic games were great because of this.
      Like Silent Hill. The fog wasn't just an atmospheric choice, they just straight up didn't have the draw distance, so that limitation was covered with fog and became an iconic strength of the series.

    i think another thing to tell is that, most of the time the storytelling around gacha games, is either Grand Adventure (Fighting Evil or Helping for Goodness), a dying world where people try to survive in apocalyptic chaos way and the MC trying to become a hero, or basically making it a movie like tragedy. but ZZZ is rather making it casual, in a way very similar to Cyberpunk 2077 where the world is dying but the people know that making it hysterical won't them do any good so they just accepted it and live with it. Even Monster Hunter follows this rule too, making stories like these very grounded and believable.

    Its a post apocalyptic game. This hollow disaster literally wiped off almost all life from both the earth and the rest of the universe apparently with half of the moon being covered by hollows.
    In the story trailer we have been shown a literal *dark wall* that might be surronding the last surviving city and even then the untouched territory gets even more reduced by both Hollow zero and its companions.
    We like to be distracted by both the bangboos, the interactions between characters and the beautiful city but we can't deny the fact that this world is dying. Another example of the writers leveraging the horror aspect of the world is at the end of chp2 when Friday, Gretta, and Hans are absorbed by the boss. While the time spent with them is brief they display their capacity for emotion and independent thought further supported by the existence of sentient androids like Billy, Qingyi, and Elfy. And yet in an instant their consumed and turned into an amalgamation of machinery an corruption. This is a much more brutal display than for example Teppei who died offscreen or even Signora despite her having a much larger role in the plot.

      Oh yeah! I should've included that in this video! And Grace did later say that they were scrapped for parts. This could've happened to Billy and Qingyi too. • @quinkana1
      @quinkana1 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@FeyHunt I think the reason why is that the boss is a special case and that the robots have already been going through corruption for a while now, and have been exposed to ether for a while already.
      And we haven't seen the heavy hitters affect our story yet. Considering that the rest of the world (even the moon) should have much bigger hollows we really haven't seen the heavy hitters like Nineveh in action, and she's relatively weak compared to the rest of the world's hollows which should be much bigger than her and therefore have much more powerful ethereals.
      Hell I think we haren't seen the extremes of what's possible for ethereals. A super powerful ethereal as smart as a human (herrscher from GGZ/HI3) or even a god-like ethereal that's hell-bent on destroying humanity (Will of the Honkai from GGZ) could be possible.
      tbf ZZZ borrows a lot of concepts from the rest of their franchises (yes they've done evil entity on the moon before) and I think we'll see familiar concepts return in ZZZ. The main difference is that we're not playing as the 'MCs' with the BS powers that will allow us to save the world.

      Haha, I've just finished Rina's Agent story last night. If I had played it before, I would have include it into this video. We did get a glimpse of a random Hollow appearing out of nowhere with Belle getting trapped in the Hollow as mentioned in the video.
      I have some doubts if our playable characters will suffer the same fate, since their Ether aptitude is pretty high. That old lady was unlucky that she has low aptitude to be affected so badly while only spend several hours to rescue the babies (presumably). The babies themselves seem to okay from the way Rina said that they have grown into fine adults. But then again, we don't know if there's something accumulating inside their bodies with every visit to the Hollow.

    • @imgood3374
      @imgood3374 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@FeyHunt I have a theory about that. Do you know the stalagmites of ether corruption you see on background and some rally mission. I think the air is filled with tiny ether particle which overtime accumulate into your body and from the guy from ch 1 who turn into a hollow, the ether particle can also stick and form things from your outer body as well.
      And also another theory, is that the ether particle that went into your body would primarily target your brain. You see, some people with high ether aptitude probably have something in they're body that allow them to block or slow down significantly ether particle from reaching the brain which is why they are fine when coming out and back because the ether particle doesn't target your organs or muscles. And this is also solidified by the fact that the ch 1 transforming guy have a black hole (?) forming from inside his head and that's also the reason all ethereal have black holes as they're head and the reason why the grandma from Rina story quest got dementia, because the ether particle that finally got to your brain would first erase what makes you, you.

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@imgood3374 That's a good theory! Kinda similar to Arknights Oripathy, where it's the Originium Dust that got you.
      It also makes sense that it targets the brain. From a line in this latest event, we already know that only "sentient" beings can turn into Ethereal, like humans and advanced AI. So it makes sense that the Ether will target the brain first. That's why we can have corrupted machines like in Grace's agent story where its processor got corrupted long before the body showed any sign of corruption. I think I will present this theory in a video later on!

    This might be off topic but I just completed a quest that revolved around a bangboo and his ‘best buddy’ the bangboo trusts his buddy with his life since, according to his friend, they’re practically brothers. But later, you figure out that all you knew before was a lie and that the bangboo was only a sort of spy tool for the man. It showed a the oblivious bangboo being experimented on, begging his friend for help as he continued to say it was ‘for the greater good’ or something. That scene alone was so hard to watch, and I most definitely didn’t expect it in a game like zzz. I’ve seen people who are villains and experiment on other beings in games before, but never had it shown in such a way. Yeah. That Memories of Inteyvat chapter is just really weird. So you just revealed that Hilichurls used to be humans. Okay... so what? The game doesn't shame you for killing more hilichurls.

      @@FeyHunt To be frank, you had good points in the video but this is bad take. Hilichurls aren't the same as Ethereals, sure on the surface they are alot alike but the horror aspect your focusing on doesn't apply to both of them.
      Ethereals are horrifying because they are an ever present danger in multiple ways. While Hilichurls are decidedly just plain tragic monsters, sure their is a horror angle to their existence and origins but what we see of Hilichurls now is just pitiful husks who have lost any trace of their former humanity.
      There isn't meant to be any shame for killing them because there is nothing human of them left.

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@PaulonTheBrave You're missing the point. In the previous comment, I was criticizing what the story did with this fact, not the horror aspect of it. Dainsleif didn't give us anything on what we should do with his former brethren. Genshin gave us the fact that Hilichurls used to be humans... and did nothing about it beyond that chapter. They can do so much more with this idea.
      Should we gather them into a protected sanctuary so that they can live peacefully? Or should we kill every single one of them to end their suffering? They seem content to just let them be.
      I'd say they used to be humans is a huge deal. You wouldn't treat humans with mental disabilities as less human, just because they don't act like humans. And the fact is, they still do act like a human, with longing or shame on their face, and hide it behind the mask. So should we help teach them how to be human again? Perhaps Ella Musk would help them find themselves again. Perhaps you can create a story about sapient Hilichurls who still remember what they were.
      Or you can take ZZZ's approach with Ethereal, by making this Hilichurl a curse that will befall anyone. Create a story where someone who found forbidden knowledge suddenly gets turned into a Hilichurl.
      Dainsleif himself doesn't even seem to care that much. Is he angry about whoever cursed them? Does he see their fate as a right punishment? If the story doesn't do anything about it, then the impact of this revelation is null. It might as well never be told and nothing will change.

      And they did show people trying to release the curse in the interlude chapter in the Chasm, and it is literally causing them more pain instead of helping them; they are trapped with no way of escaping their undying fates.
      Plus, no one knows about their tragic fates other than Dainsleif, the Travellers, and probably Venti and Zhongli; so no one is going to view them other than some other race that are hostile to them.

    I remember the first time I played the game, I was mesmerized by how cozy(?) the environments in New Eridu were. Compared to Genshin and Star Rail, where the mc is either unaware or amnesiac and has to explore unknown lands and worlds (which is the intention as the appeal of both games latch onto your curiosity about these new worlds and the stories behind them), as unfriendly as the world outside New Eridu is, the city itself feels full of life, and nearly everyone in Sixth Street knows you. I think it's a good contrast to the fear of Hollows, its nature and the consequences of staying in one too long, as well as whatever tf is going on with the rebels and the mystery of the Sacrifice.

You have Zhu Yuan for example, who has lived a normal life, and the potential threat that New Eridu could be under what with the Sacrifice and other conspiracies would probably force many ordinary people like her into complicated situations, especially as an officer.
      Another example could be the entirety of Belobog Industries because they're pretty much manual laborers, and while the Cunning Hares ARE technically Hollow Raiders, outside of that, I'm pretty sure none of them expected to be involved in the whole Sacrifice conspiracy just from acquiring a strongbox. We literally have Ellen - a member of Victoria Housekeeping (currently the ONLY faction to know of the Sacrifice prior to the main story) - living a normal life as a highschool student!

      The NPC’s scanner breaks, there are screeches in the background, she’s freaking out, we feel like we’re trapped in a box, and we still have no idea what’s going on.
      Then the moment we peek out of the box, peek out of a gap between the buildings, Nineveh instantly shows us why going into hollows is a bad idea without doing a single thing. The HIA employee’s reaction tells us everything we need to know.
      It’s because of this scene establishing how horrifying Nineveh and Hollow Zero are that Miyabi’s fight scene is elevated. She ran right at that monster without even hesitating and wiped the small mobs without breaking a sweat. I loved it so so much. I enjoy this time for this Main storyline that the Main Antagonist is not out in the open and presented straight away. There is a Mystery around the Main Antagonist and the only reason they are slowly being exposed now is due to unforeseen circumstances that lead Wise and Belle to get themselves involved starting with the AI Fairy. SPOILER below warning so do not progress farther since I'll be explaining how everything is connected.
    It is made clear that Fairy was intended to go to someone else but due to the events of her being stolen, it resulted in her accidently becoming part of Wise and Belle's life instead of going to the person she was originally intended for.
    The second event that lead Wise and Belle to becoming involved in this kind of secret war against this unknown Antagonist is the events in Chapter 1. What looked like a act of a corporation being greedy and evil was nothing more than a cover up for this organization to destroy the only evidence of their existence being the Sacrifice. It was only after Chapter 2 when the guy being manipulated realized he was manipulated which lead to events of Chapter 3.
    Chapter 2 is when we learn the connection to the Fall of Old Eridu and a possible origins of Hollows involving this Secret Organization though discovering the fate of Koleda's father and discovering this Sacrifice.
    Chapter 3 is when we learn that there are people fighting against this secret organization and this is not a recent event. This secret war has been going on far longer through espionage, manipulation, contracts, and etc. This is not a war being publicly known and seen, this is a war that happens in the shadows of New Eridu while the majority of people living ordinary lives remain unaware of this war. It is only by unforseen circumstances why Wise and Belle got involved in it.

That scene was a perfect way to world-build in general for all the reasons in this video but showing the player what happens first also kind of calibrates their expectations - and gives them something to hunt for in the story later. "Why the hell did that guy turn into that thing?!"
    In general, that sort of 'consequences, then explanation' method pulls in the person experiencing the narrative. If you do it too hard you run the risk of overloading your reader/player with too many unanswered questions but that's just a problem of good pacing.

    Later you learn you can “save” a Nikke by wiping their memory, but in a way you are still killing the person they were. We also see the memory wipe happen to another Nikke travelling with us.

While a lot of it does play out like a visual novel, they take many points to showcase the threat of the storm, the threat of Manus, and so on. We experience what happens to people affected by the storm syndrome and what the storm does to people when it hits. We witness what happens to people who put on the Manus masks, as well as their plans, helping create a sense of why they should be threatening.

    ZZZ shows, you don't need an elaborate open world for a player to have fun in it.
    It reminds me of "Megaman Battle Network", where you could explore the overworld in peace,
    but you can switch to the "deeper" level anytime, if you want to fight.
    The fact, you are actually controlling characters in a danger zone adds a bit of urgency to every mission.
    Combine this with certain story events, tension is built on top, even further elevating that urgency.

    Even if I don't like a specific part of the story, not having all the exposition yap yap yapping is amazing. I hate Genshin quests, because no matter how good the payoff is, it doesn't make up for the hours of --> characters yap exposition at me, walk (don't run! stamina is a thing) to another character so they can yap exposition at me, rinse, repeat. Add to that the excellent "cut to comic book" scenes replacing a bunch of the "gently undulating torso dialogue" scenes and I'm pretty happy with it. The other games should take note.

    Hoyo have always been pretty good at horror inspired moments, like HI3 as a whole is pretty dark but not so much "horror". Then you get the Herrcher Of Rimestar and Ana's mind still being in there trying soooooo hard to not become a monster only to fail, or Herrcher Of Dominion being able to obtain it's hosts by preying on the mentally weak and often implied suicidal members of society.
    even much earlier in the story (like year 1) You have Sakura Samsara which is eventually revealed to be a time loop situation of Yae Sakura reliving the worst section of her life over and over and over again for over 500 years of constantly failing to change the outcome in a positive way (an idea which was later reused as the foundation of the "day you vanished with the starts" event story).
    like sure anyone can write a story where countless people are killed by monsters and we have to kill monsters but stories where they DON'T ALLOW characters to die? Good examples of those are much rarer/rarely done well.

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@dracotias Yeah... I wouldn't call those HI3 moments as horror, but it is quite disturbing.
      More important part for HI3 is that they do use these moments as a way to tell a story about its characters.
      You can easily lose sight on what actually matters when writing these high-concept scenes.
      Now that being said, some of these stories are quite unsatisfying in terms of its conclusion.
      The Day You Vanished with the Star has a great concept, but the ending is just "leave". Yes, the timeloop does proof that the Captain cares a lot about Kongming and that there's no timeline where Kongming live, but that's basically just avoiding the concept altogether. I still prefer Sakura Samsara when it comes to the timeloop execution. It's more like Groundhog Day or Edge of Tomorrow.
      Maybe I should make a video about this later. Both of those are great stories on their own right.

    I think my favorite part about zzz is the fact that the main character is already part of the world from begining. what i mean by that is the mc isnt detached from reality because theyre been in a coma, got amnesia, got created recently (like the mc in hsr and wuwa) etc.
    these trope are such a copout for lazy worldbuilding because then everything is gonna get explained through exposition and the mc asking everything they don't know, it is the very antithesis of show dont tell.

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hmmmm, I understand that we're all tired of the self-insert/amnesiac MC in the gacha game market, but I don't think it's quite fair to paint the trope itself as a mark of lazy writing. It can be done well, but it's just so difficult to pull it off.
      Truth is, these gacha game writers never had a chance to do it, because they only use the trope as a convenience to explain the world itself. It's a leftover from the less-good anime trope. To pull off an amnesiac protagonist well, you must have a good payoff to explain what is hidden in their past. In most of these gacha and anime, they didn't.
      So in summary, blame the writers who can't pull it off well. Not the trope itself. In my opinion, if you can't pull it off, just choose another trope, like ZZZ.

      The only thing on my mind is that the Hollow is similar to how a star works. Its own energy mass creates a collapsing force that keeps it from expanding. When the fuel is expended, then that collapsing force no longer exists, hence the expansion of the Hollow. But if this is true, then the Hollow can never be gone.
      But then destroying the Ethereal inside the Hollow will cause it to shrink... so does that mean you can ONLY shrink the Hollow by killing as much Ethereal as possible? Where does that energy go to? Eh, kinda weird...

    Unfortunately, as the plot progresses, I cannot say that the full story is that excellent at this point. It's a strong start, but they didn't quite stick the landing with it, at least as of the completion of Chapter 3. They more than make up for this with good gameplay and incredibly badass cutscenes and some of the most fleshed out characters I've seen in a long time, so I cut them some slack. There is one character moment in Ch 3 that was touched upon that I wished they explored more. That would have made this Chapter less mid and it might even make it significantly better.
      It was a brief dialogue but it had weight on it. Non-verbatim, "I must thank you for helping a girl achieve her dream." Lycaon said this about Phaeton saving Corin in the Hollows. There's weight in those words that could potentially point to a compelling character moment for Corin. But it was left just as that. I do understand that VHK is like a pseudo-underground group and disclosing personal info from them that early is prolly detrimental to their work. But Corin was an exception to that rule and it really would have been cool if we got to know more information about Corin, how she decided to become maid and what happened to her prior that prompted her to make that decision.
      It doesn't help that Lycaon does have a soft spot for Corin and prolly sees her as a budding apprentice. When you switch from Corin to Lycaon, he will usually say, "You've done well, Corin." I like this cause another gacha that has an INCREDIBLE story uses this same technique... NIKKE! (SPOILERS AHEAD)
    .
    .
    .
    You don't get a dialogue exposition about the raptors and why they are so dangerous as the first experience, you're literally thrown into a battlefield in the middle of an attack from the raptors as you fight for survival and command the nikkes to fight these raptures during the tutorial, and then when you think you've got the upper hand and you're about to escape, the Nikke that saved your life ends up being corrupted by this creature and you're forced to KILL said Nikke before she loses control of herself and tries to harm you.
    From that scene alone you imediatelly understand that not only you (the commander) are completely outmatched as a character and NEED the nikkes to fight for you (which is important when later on the story puts you in situations where your nikkes are heavily injured it puts your character in a tough spot where sometimes they are forced to retreat and fail the mission at hand or risk total death of the party) and even when you have the uperhand against these robotic creatures you should NEVER underestimate the raptors cause you never know when a stronger one will arrive or worse... one of your nikkes gets corrupted and now you have to fight the raptors AND the corrupted nikke
    And this is from the tutorial alone, later there is more nuances like the government structure and your limitations as a simple commander vs the power manipulation someone higher up could have and the struggles of humanity living underground and having to reconquer the surface against this seemingly overwhelming force that later on you find out is actually starting to become sentient and even have mixes of nikke and rapture in their ranks which makes things even more difficult for the cast. And all of this is shown through your own discoverings during the missions, YOU witness the first sentient Raptor as it speaks back, YOU see the first fusion of NIKKE and raptor as you are forced to fight it in the middle of a mission, YOU find out the government is fucked up and you have no power when they order other squads to attack you to obtain something they want from you and you are not willing to give.

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I see! I understand what're getting at, but I think it's not the same kind of horror. I think NIKKE is more about the classic post-apocalyptic helplessness. Everyone has to do bad stuff to survive, even if someone else had to suffer. For the greater good.
      If I read the tropes correctly, NIKKE is more about the question of "what is a human?". Is Nikke a human? Is humanity worth protecting? And when the needs of a NIkke and humanity clashes, who would you save?
      It's definitely something I need to see and read for myself. The high concept is filled with potentials. Hopefully they pull it off well.

    I think in inazuma story for genshin, they did the showing tho it was...tell then show
    Other showing are also done subtly in the layout like islands etc. Inazuma did that well

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hmmm... In general, "tell, then show" is always worse than "show, then tell", because if you want to show it later, then why tell us now? That's an unnecessary yapping.
      Of course, Genshin also has its moments where it executed "show, then tell" very well, like the examples in Inazuma islands or the Orobashi's skeleton long before you heard of her power. Another great example is the three giant robots in Sumeru. I will not make any brash claim that Genshin NEVER did it well.
      In general, Genshin is always great at environmental storytelling. It's just when it comes to the actual main story, I often find it... wanting.

    The thing about ZZZ is that it feels character driven rather than story driven. There’s no sense of urgency to the story…there’s a conspiracy going on but the MC isn’t fully aware of how deep it is so they have to just live on with their daily lives for now.
    It’s not like genshin where you know the MC has something important he needs to do but instead has to go through seven nations and waste time at events instead going straight to his final destination.

    • @FeyHunt
      @FeyHunt  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha, I get your point, but I have to correct you a bit. There's no sense of urgency in the overarching narrative (yet).
      A sense of urgency is always important in every chapter to push the characters to achieve their goal, like how we need to save Rain in Chapter 3. Without urgency, there will be no tension in the story.
      Genshin is just weird. They started out with a goal but no urgency. So the traveler is just meandering about like a headless chicken. I'm glad they kinda drop the fake urgency all together in Star Rail and make it literally episodic like Star Trek.

      @domb.1522 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@FeyHunt Very true. At first i wasn’t digging ZZZ pasting but then i realized it felt more natural. Like yeah in chapter 3 there is urgency to the story and the situation not only demands you to act quickly, but it also gets to the point because you wanna rescue rain.
      Also yeah Genshin’s weird in this way. Like, if i were separated from my siblings and stranded in a strange world i would do everything to find them instead of wasting time with floating ear-soar. They completely messed up the pasting of the story.

      @@FeyHunt no offense to zzz. i think you're observations are correct, but it's sad that a lot of gacha games story is just a massive exposition dump. i dont know how anyone can get invested in wuwa for example but to be fair i only played it for an hour. the bar shouldn't be so low that we're impressed by zzz but here we are. i hope that zzz will raise the standard a bit and stuff like this can at least become the minimum for games of its caliber.

      @@kiteofdark That was my impression as well when I first get into gacha games. I have a theory that they really don't care about stories as long as they keep pulling gacha money.
      What they are starting to realize is that if you write a good story with good characters, people will stay longer and spend more.
      Yes, gacha game standards are pretty low. But I take small victories when I get them. Praising them when they do right, and criticizing them when they do bad. That's how they'll improve.
