  • Endings can make or break a film. A strong ending creates word of mouth that is key for movies. Summer of 84 is no exception. This film has an ending worth a review, and it definitely worth a discussion. It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea. Needless to say, Summer of 84 deserves a watch.

Only when its not jammed down your throat..the best part about nostalgia is its the way you REMEMBER IT.
Oh and also, he didnt care that he would be found out cuz he was ego driven being A COP.
I like all the picking apart because it didnt feel too perfect...formula first..at the end of the film, thats when you could understand the parts as a whole.

I think you completely missed the fact that it's 1984, in the suburbs! The term "serial killer" was extremely new to the masses, and most people in the suburbs would never had any reason to suspect anything like that could ever happen in their town. In fact it wouldn't have surprised me if the police didn't possibly think it was a grifter or something like that. Serial killers love flaunting their trophies, especially back in the day when people didn't expect that kind of depravity.

Saw this movie today and I’ve got so angry at the parents for making them confess. Maybe it didn’t made sense that the neighbor they knew for years was a killer, but Davey got some proof that at least should have made them think about it more and take the evidence to the police. And if they didn’t believe him they shouldn’t have made him go apologize to the man that could be a serial killer.

    • @SamiDC
      @SamiDC ปีที่แล้ว +1

Problem was he had that town wrapped around his finger. A pillar of the community and a cop, and in the 80s being a cop was treated with far more reverance than it does today. He did what John Wayne Gacy did, sold this perfect image of himself and because he was so charming everyone fell under his spell. For me, I felt the parent's reprimending of the boys was more scary than anger inducing because that's how a lot of real-life killers operate. Terrifying to think about. >

The tracking shot down the hallway while the Davey and Woody were sleeping was masterful. That ominous synth music and then the sudden motion from the ceiling was bloody chilling.
Agree with Nocturnal that the antagonist might've been miscast, but he still delivered the monstrous finale convincingly.

    Why not clean up?
Maybe he thought he had time.
Maybe his ego couldn't handle the idea of being caught by "those meddling kids".
He DID arrest someone; being a cop, he was able to destroy evidence against himself and frame someone else.
What angers me is the father. "There are multiple missing children, my son brings me a bloody shirt from next door that's obviously a kid's... so I think I'll march him next door and make him apologize to the man."

Great review! You pointed out all the plot decisions that made this movie special to me. I also like that they stuck to their prime suspect and did not go for the expected twist (which was a twist in itself). Just one thing: I would have expected some communication (maybe an excited walkie talkie session "Guys you won't believe...!") between all the friends at some point that night after Davey and Woody had finally proven that Mackey was indeed the killer. But overall it is a great throwback movie with an awesome soundtrack!

  • @raymondgraber5453

I think he didn't believe that the boy would get him caught because he's a cop and back then forensics wasn't what it is today. Also he knew none of the police were on to him. I absolutely LOVED the ending. I watched it three or four times. I loved what he said to Davey. I found it super creepy when he said he wanted him to look over his shoulder wondering if today would be the day he would come for him and one day he would be right ! I also loved how he played man hunt with him and woody at the end. It was really good.

I absolutely love this movie! I saw a clip of this movie from the video "Ethics of looking and the harmless peeping tom" and I was instantly intrigued.
Then after watching it, it's now among my favourite horror/thrillers out there. Reason being, this movie is a horror popcorn flick meant to strike the nostalgia berries and had no reason to write the serial killer character on the level to like maybe Seven or Zodiac but in my opinion, they really outdid themselves. Because in popcorn horror flicks like these, the serial killer rarely gets a monologue to our hero (refer to the movie Disturbia (2007) for my point) but this movie gave our killer exactly that and more. What we got was a bone-chilling and incredibly dark moment where instead of choosing to kill the kid, he let him go. Like a predator letting go of its prey knowing that the prey has nowhere to run or hide because he's coming for him. Truly an amazingly written final act.

About the killer not covering his crimes up. He wanted to get caught. He says he did not. But that's the nature of psychopaths, it's part of the chase and feeling of power. So I thought it was actually not that out of place. Did he not also wrote a letter to get attention? Just like in the first scene, he did not leave money for the main characters mail, showed the main character his torture room. I think for a person like that, it's all part of their twisted fantasies.

He didn't try to clean up his house because he was SO self-assured that no one could or *would* ever believe he could do something like that. He's definitely someone who believes his 'mask' is so firmly in place that he could never be suspected; he grew up knowing that being an officer would keep general suspicion away, whilst keeping him inside the loop of information that could get him caught. He plays the long game, yet his over-confidence ironically gets him found out by the very people he targets. His final speech to the boy about coming after him shows the lengths he'll go to.

As far as a sequel…I would say yes and no. Yes in that it gives you probably closure with all the traumas involved with it and how the reviewer gives it as well. No in that it makes you feel scared for the kid. And it stays in your head with what if’s or maybe I should have theories. The anticipation of a serial killer coming up at any time makes it a true horror story. Loved the film and review.

I do not agree with the casting of davey being bad. I think it was perfect because the whole message of the movie was that anyone could be a serial killer. So in my opinion casting a nice looking dude really underlines that.

My major gripe is the helmet-style bowl cut hairstyle of Davey (see also Will from the latest season of Stranger Things). Teens at that time didn't wear their hair that way. Even Mackey has sort of a bowl cut going on! Disgraceful!
3:41 Alternate scenario: He never married or had kids due to his paranoia, and has become a survivalist like John Rambo, Burt Gummer, and/or Dutch Schaefer, but is also kind of a hermit. His homestead is a fortress filled with traps that can be activated from his inner sanctum in a fortified basement. He's been anticipating Mackey's return for 20-ish years. It's the Pacific Northwest, so he's able to legally acquire an arsenal of guns. So he wouldn't be..."easy prey" (spoken in Dr. Pretorius voice as per 'From Beyond').

4:40 I think he was portrayed as overly goofy on purpose. While the movie is mainly insired by John Wayne Gacy there have been pedophiles who were just as wholesome and goofy until everyone found out about the truth. It's scarier in a way. My sister and I watched this together. We thought they tried to make us think the babysitter girl was a killer, but that quickly fizzled out. This movie was also clearly low budget, so only so many characters could be in the script. Something that I thought would have made the film more moving would be for the main kid to die. Maybe even all four. Then it could show the parents feeling bad for not seeing Macky for who he was.

I think in the sequel Dave should be a cop and and by talking help of he’s 2 friends catch the suspect it will be thrilling if he become a cop in the sequel but I don’t like when woody dead 😭 I felt so so sad and if they end the movie by catching the suspect and being a peace it will good and happy ending but unfortunately they don’t made that ending

manhunt was more popular in the 80s...the 70s was more hide n seek...it wasnt their own brand...it WAS a brand.

All these 80 movies (for teens) ended in a naive way, the boys solved the problem and nerd got the hot girl. And this one makes fun of that with the ending. In a way this movie calls 40 years old people, who were kids in the 80’s, and now watching the same movie will say “dude, stop being STUPID”, which basically is what brings the dark and adult ending. When you are younger you think all is an adventure but at the end of the day shit happens.
