    All of these 80s-nostalgia shows forget two major aspects of the 80s: 1950s nostalgia and the constant threat of nuclear annihilation.

    • @Barada73
      @Barada73 5 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      I can see that, there was definitely a resurgence of interest in the Vietnam War in the mid to late 80s, especially with films like Platoon and Full Metal Jacket, TV shows like Tour of Duty and China Beach, and even the Marvel Comics series The 'Nam.
      I was 6 years old in 1979, so it's possible that any 1950s nostalgia that I remembered from the 80s was just carryover from the 70s.

      @@AnnusMirabilus Mainstream 80s was mostly 50s nostalgia up till 87 maybe. There was always a streak of underground obsession with the 60s though, be that pill-poppin '66 for punkers, paisley in LA, Manson for New York... That's America, England had its mod revivalists etc, so mostly clean cut early 60s.
      In Mainstream the 60s came to full bloom in the late 80s I'd say, Wonder Years came out '88. That was flowery late 60s tropes.
      With Grunge it all switched to the 70s. So much so that "the kids of today should defend themselves against the 70s" - was that '94?

      @@leikeylosh You can have your opinion, and I'm a year in the future from this comment, however. Bone Tomahawk (for people that know the directors work i. e. Brawl in Cell Block 99) people should ALREADY know going in this will be a trippy movie in SOME way. It's not a 'gorefest' 2/3s of the film is basically a search and rescue western film where you get to know our party of characters more.They have scares here and there along the way, like the Mexicans, our protagonist being severely injured, but the film is a subversion up until we get to the 3rd act. People who know the director are expecting something insane as a pay off, but a fresh clueless mind, which I was at the time, I feel got the best out of it. I didn't expect cave-dwelling mutated indians with bone augments in their body. That was fucking cool AND I really enjoyed the rest of the film, the 'build' to the end gore. Great cast, great shots, amazing dialogue. It's no Tarantino western, but it's a good film that is what we need to spice up the normal genres. Western/Horror? Sign me up.

    The 80s was the last decade without Internet so it feels different from the later decades. That’s probably why nostalgia for it has persisted longer than I thought it would. I also remember the kidnapping obsession. There was a popular TV movie in 1989 called “I Know My First Name Is Steven” that a lot of families watched since it was about the famous child kidnapping of Steven Stayner. The actual event happened in the 70s, however.

    I liked the "diet Ex Machina" parts of Upgrade. In fact, I thought it handled the subject better. What Upgrade implies through the events of its plot, Ex Machina explicitly states. Nathan explains every single thing about the movie in one of the last scenes of Ex Machina, I can't understand why people keep saying it's the more subtle or graceful of the two.
