  • Summer of 84 is a Canadian Independent Mystery/Thriller film set in the summer of (you guessed it) 1984. The film acts like a Disturbia/Stranger Things crossover in many respects. Here are my first impression thoughts on the film.

    A great throw back 80’s show is the coming of age comedy show Red Oaks. David Gordon Green directed the pilot and 4 or 5 other episodes. Top shelf.

      Donita Brown totally agree! Hard to believe the same director went on to do Christmas Story and Porky’s of all movies. Great range.

    Regarding the soundtrack - sounds to me like a mix of Stranger Things + Halloween III Season of the Witch (complete with Carpenter musical stingers for jump scares).

    I know it's B, but to this day one of my favorite Canadian-produced horror films is 1988's Watchers with Corey Haim. B classic that doesn't get the credit it deserves.

    Funny enough, I just rented that tonight. I was a big fan of the filmmakers previously because of Turbo Kid. This isn't as good as Turbo Kid, but I thought it was pretty solid. I can tell that the director likes to mix this kids movie with adult themes based on these two films, and it does catch you by surprise at times, especially as the film goes on.
    I do agree with a lot of your points, something I definitely want to revisit eventually after some time away.

    WoW! What a treat this film was!! I went into this film not knowing anything about it, I just picked it because of the 84 in the title, and I love the 80's!! Just as you thought its Stranger Things meets Disturbia and I felt the exact same. I agree with everything you said. It was surprisingly well done, sure its not perfect and if they had a bigger budget they could have had better wardrobe and more pop culture props. Like Davey's Dad didn't even have an 80's haircut, ok ok I dont want to nit pick the movie because I loved it! It always had you second guessing and you had no clue how it would end! Just a really fun film that started a bit slow but really got interesting!
    ALWAYS LOVE YOUR VIDEOS DAVE!!! Toronto RULES!! ;)

    I enjoyed it. It had an 80's vibe with cars from that era. I would say it's more crime/ mystery but I can see why it would get lumped in as a horror movie.
    It has that isolated small town feel. Suburban streets and manicured lawns.
    The movie felt reminiscent of Stand by me. A group of kids riding around on bike's in this suburban area and going off on this journey to find out if their neighbour is a serial killer.
    I was kept wondering if the cop was ok. Kept me thinking and that impressed me.
    The ending leaves room for speculation where you the viewer supplies the meaning. I like that more than just you're usual happy ending.

    Totally agree. I had high hopes for this movie and I completely struggled with it for the first third. The second third really peaked my interest, shades of Rear Window, Body Double, Disturbia etc and then the final third took me somewhere completely unexpected. The ending was not what I figured whatsoever. Very grim. I like grim. 🙂
    The score went straight on my playlist. Very Carpenter, Very Fog, even had shades of EFNY in there.
    Did anyone else spot the similarities in the back alley with the first Elm St?

    Hey Dave, just curious why a number of horror TH-camrs have done reviews of this film? Is it at the request of the filmmakers? Maybe I’m wrong, but just doesn’t seem like the kind of film you’d be interested in devoting that much time to. Regardless, always appreciate your straightforwardness.

    Dave, you really need to check out Hereditary. I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
    Also, I got a Myers/Carpenter vibe when Mackey came over to Davey’s house to smooth things over with him and “call his nephew.” As he walks up to the front door, they used the classic POV perspective with Mackey. It was genuinely creepy.

    It's funny cause the 80's truly was an adventure I'm 43 now so in 84 I was 10 riding my bike around not a care in the world I had my G.i.joes and my transformers and He man's and of course star wars that's the 80s baby also watching horror movies Friday the 13th and of course Halloween 1 and 2 that was all the Halloween was at then until 88 of course.

    So around the 6 min part in the vid i was kinda lost would you say nostalgia in the film was really forced or wasn't Force enough? And when you do see Halloween 2018 is this the type of video we could be expecting

    • @DaveMcRaeOfficial
      @DaveMcRaeOfficial  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Tyi! The pop culture 80s nostalgia in the movie was limited because of the type of production this movie was. There were some references, but they were not forced or in your face. In regards to my Halloween 2018 review video, that will be a much more in-depth video because of the nature of the topic and the expectation in regards to what I've been talking about here on my channel.

    Hey Dave love the show I wanted to see if or anyone else have checked out the interview Adam Marcus the writer / director of JASON GOES TO HELL it's the 25th ANNIVERSARY it's on MIDNIGHTS EDGE channel it's like a podcast. That movie was ok but I wasn't a huge fan but after listening to this interview and what he actually had the movie going to be I think a lot of us would have loved it. Chechen it out he talks about how he dealt with Sean Cunningham and how he intended to use Jason's relatives in it and how CRAYTON DUKES story was bigger the reference to The EVIL DEAD and his pitch on FREDDY VS JASON. He touched on some of this stuff with the CAMP CRYSTAL LAKE MEMORIES but he really goes in depth with this interview everybody check it out I enjoyed it.

    I hate to tell you this dude, that was not a first impression, but a detailed full review lol... and I don't know if you realized it, but you did give away a big spoiler (I could tell what you were implying). But, a good, detailed, review. The movie does look good.

    • @ryans9196
      @ryans9196 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually dude, go watch Cody Leach's review on this. Then you'll see the difference. He goes into much more detail talking about the characters, the story Etc. Dave's just a terrific communicator, and knows how to articulate his feelings and thoughts really well. But this was by no means an in-depth review of the movie. Once you see the movie, you'll see what I'm talking about.
      As for the spoiler, it's not really a spoiler, because as Dave mentioned this is an archetypal story that has been told before.

    • @fservo
      @fservo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      SPOILER ALERT (and I haven't seen the movie) "As for the spoiler, it's not really a spoiler, because as Dave mentioned this is an archetypal story that has been told before." That and another line or 2, is a spoiler. "They make you "think" there might be a twist." That combined with the other line is a spoiler. I know he did not mean it to be a spoiler, but it was... I bet you if he thinks about it, even he would say, "Yeah, maybe I shouldn't have said those couple of things."

    • @kevindustin396
      @kevindustin396 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frank, you're missing Ryan's point. You consider that to be a spoiler? You do realize what's a spoiler to one, is not necessarily a spoiler to another, especially when we're talking about a story that's been told before. I've seen the movie, and Dave didn't spoil anything. Watch the movie, and then judge. And no, I don't think he would think that at all, I'm sure he sleeps very well lol

    • @fservo
      @fservo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand what your saying... That you pretty much know it, when you watch the movie. And also I have had many things told to me during a review... so it is the risk of listening to a review; or many times trailers themselves give away too much... But he himself said, "You have some doubt." Now I won't have any doubt. Wouldn't you consider that "somewhat" of a spoiler...And watching Dave's videos, I think he would at least somewhat agree with me. He always says I don't want to ruin the freshness of the movies for you guys. A little bit of the freshness is gone... That little bit of doubt is gone. It wasn't intentional. That's why I bring it up to him... and I have had bigger spoilers given to me during reviews... Maybe when I watch the movie, I will feel differently.. "like I never would have had any doubt." or there's more to it than I think...

    • @kevindustin396
      @kevindustin396 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When he said "You have some doubt", he's talking about the collective YOU, not the individual YOU. He's saying it as a figure of speech. Anybody who watches this movie is going to have doubt about the neighbor. That's the whole point! You're supposed to have doubt about the neighbor. If you don't there's something wrong with you. I mean, the synopsis for the movie tells you to have doubt about the neighbor for goodness sakes. lol.
      It's an archetypal story that has been told many times over, just in various ways. If you truly want fresh, then you shouldn't have watched this video in the first place. Dave also said there were a bunch of kids, is that a spoiler? Dave also said that the main kid is a conspiracy theorist, is that a spoiler? Dave also said that the music is very John Carpenter like, is that a spoiler? Dave also said that the acting was a bit wooden at the very beginning, but the movie gets better as it goes along, is that a spoiler? I mean you could even make the argument that Dave saying the movie gets better as it goes along is a spoiler. You could have said, "Oh damn... I wanted to experience that for myself... the movie getting better as it goes along! lol. I mean this could go on and on and on. He didn't spoil anything, just watch the movie lol.

    Before cell phones and computers...Boring! Hollywood needs to stay away from the 80's. What happened to good Mystery movies? Are the writers on strike in Hollywood? What happened to telling a simple good story?
