I did the Avanti 2 gear/strut upgrade. Best $70.00 I ever spent. Never thought about just upgrading the wheels to help with the spring loaded bounce... But that’s why you have 100,000 subscribers and I’ve never posted a video. I don’t have a huge fleet of EDF’s, but I think this is the fastest jet I own. I maidened back over the winter the same day I maidened the F-16 Thunderbird, and at speed coming down the runway it didn’t seem even close, the Viper considerably faster. Not what I was expecting from what some considered a “first EDF”. (6s 3600 spek gen2. The local 24 hour Lipo battery store was all out of the 6s 4800’s)
@@leeshaver2347 hi Lee. MotionRC. I went to the Avanti v2 model, then “replacement parts”. I’ll go back in MotionRC and look at “past orders” and get you something more descriptive, like part number(s). Flew the Viper ironically 3 times yesterday. A buddy of mine has one as well, but without the gear upgrade. I let him land the Viper to see what he thought. He too wanted the same info on the gear upgrade. Night and Day difference. Landing anything is still my Achilles heel. I don’t crash much anymore, but the F-16 Thunderbird, Freewing Me-262, ArrowsRC Marlin and the Sonic Binary are on bench with nose gear issues. (I took a 4 year step back and brought out the trainer style planes, taildraggers and tricycle types, and relearning how to land)
@@leeshaver2347 I think any of the Avanti gear will do. You’ll have to do some trimming on all three wheel wells. I did mine with a long exacto knife and sanded them smooth with sandpaper and a Dremel sanding attachment. Looked awful, but I had some dark grey foam safe paint and covered the butcher job. About a year later I don’t ever notice. It was the best thing I’ve ever done in the sport repair-wise, not to see the Viper bounce.
I think Mrs. Phillips is the Best Videographer doing video's . Very few are even close to your skill level in quality of flight time recording . Steady , Super visible . Well done . Thanks . Without You there would be No Uncle Brian .
I noticed this a few years back, just the best, some wide shots, some zoomed, good close ups and at times is in harms way all with no camera shake, rock steady all the time, so good! Can never fault this camera work.
Your camera crew seems to be one of the only camera operators that don’t constantly zoom in on the plane, we want to see it from the flyers perspective and be able to see the whole scenery. That’s why I always come back to your channel. Great camera work.
First off, thanks - 100% agree. I want to see it like I'm gonna fly it!!!!!!! This has always been a pet peeve of mine on other's very good, but different flight videos I've seen...not that we will NEVER do a drone flight video, but really, that's not a vantage point I'm ever gonna fly from, so I don't mind a quick clip, but it's just fluff!!!
Man, I watch this video - mostly the beginning with you flying the plane - over and over again. This video actually is what convinced me that I needed this plane. I'm now a Viper 70mm pilot and LOVE it. Mad props to Camera Crew for holding so still when you passed in front of her face at 100+ mph! Your videos are great because of your enthusiasm, knowledge, and superb skills. Then after already selling us on the plane, you follow up with an abundance of technical knowledge and tips and trick. Great work Brian and Camera Crew! I wish you guys much success and thank you again for the awesome content.
I just setup my viper last night, cg’d it this morning and flew it today. It came from the factory with several wires in the wrong ports. I finally took all the wires and both ferrite cores out and did my best to organize everything. I got it cleaned up a bit…still looks like a wire cotton ball. But, those ferrite cores have some weight to them. The one on the servo wires I mounted on the wires around a half inch above the receiver and tilted foreword. The excess wire going to the nose gear I coiled and put below the battery ply board. The rest of the servo wire I looped and placed behind the receiver. The second ferrite core I laid between the foam under the dorsal vent channel. With the heavy ferrite cores installed, my 6s 3200mah mounted around an inch in front of the receiver giving just enough room to loop the battery lead in between the battery and receiver. Canopy fits perfectly. I’m going to make some custom length leads for this plane. Definitely a PITA as far as squeezing everything in. Flys like a champ. Radar’d at 108mph on maiden flight.
Glad they're helping you Mark! We know that the process of doing it can be daunting at first, but once you've done it two or three times, then you'll just come back to watch me crash planes into random things - LOL ;)
Brian, you are 100% right on. I did my dobro up grade today and was finally able to get good, no bounce landings from my 70mm Viper. I did use a 1 7/8 nose tire for a more accurate replacement wheel. Why cant Horizon get the message that softer low bounce tires should come as a stock wheel on their jets.
Thanks J T!!! I don't know that I have especially good depth perception, but ironically, I was "blind" most of my life, and with correction, I was pretty good, but literally had no steps left on one eye, in the contacts I was wearing as soon as when we started this channel!!! Now that I've been through LasicPlus (and one "touch up") I can see pretty good, but nothing especially amazing...20/10 - 20/20 or so. I DO have a lot of practice flying this space, and this helps. Also, I've always flown in "tight quarters" so it's just part of my sop, and for many, this would not work...since they're not used to it.
Hi BrianPhillipsRC thank you for the video just got the jet. I figured out why they have those filters they are actually ballast weigh about 1 ounce each. If you leave them in they balance the plane out and the battery can be in the right spot
That might be a nice side effect ;) They have to do it to limit RF interference to meet FCC guidelines - HH follows all the rules, even the very, VERY dumb ones - LOL
Brian, maybe this will help others... I bought FMS Front Landing Gear System Blue Avanti from e bay for $29.99. It has the spring loaded oleo. It fits right in with very little cutting of some foam. I then used Dynam Trojan tires from a wrecked 50 inch t28 I had for the REAR wheels. They fit onto the stock viper rear struts perfectly. The Dynam wheels are a little larger than the viper stock rear wheels. Fortunately they fit perfect into the wing when fully retracted without shaving the holes bigger. This has made for excellent take offs in DEEPER grass (with the slightly larger Dynam t28 wheels). The front spring loaded oleo has stopped all the front axle bends from bumpy grass etc... Believe it or not, that little bit bigger t28 tire has made an enormous difference for the long grass. I was having a very hard time with take-offs until this upgrade.
NICE! Great tips Sean! I like the solutions you came up with...and sounds like you solved all the issues I have with this 70mm rendition. It's a GREAT plane if you have a good strip to fly from, but if it's a rough one, or grass, it's a belly lander ;( Can't wait to share our 90mm Viper Experience - coming REAL soon ;)
Excellent video! If everybody would follow what you are showing/teaching, there would be much less disappoinment on the field. The chest rig with the tray is the best solution for us (me and my son). This is how our hands and fingers are completely free and relaxed and can be used for the control of the sticks and the switches. Highly recommended. Many brands available (depending where you live). We fly in mode 2, as well.
I think I would like it too, but not sure I'd like when I'm holding the plane, for example...something a normal flyer isn't gonna have to do - POSE FOR THUMBNAIL (That's why there's always an awkward science when I'm about to fly - LOL) - other than that, I think it would be nice to try.
In the background, you're seeing a Boeing 737 Max 9 - and it's unfortunately hard to get one. We were actually working with a guy in CA who was supposed to bring in some of these and we were going to offer them for sale, but long story short, he screwed us over. He's only payed us a single "good faith payment" of $100 (over a month late at the time). But now, he now owes us just under $7,000. We will never suggest anyone does any business with him, as he's obviously a liar and a crook. Sorry to have to report this. The worst part of it is we have this platform, and he still though it would be a good idea to rip us off. What an idiot, right??? He's lucky I don't make a marketing campaign against his little shop, since he's obviously up to no good.
For my RC cars, when working on shocks and other applications, if I have a spring clip (or e-clip as I call them), it's so easy to do it in a box or bag to capture the clip if it takes flight. But man, on a jet like this, belly up and unwieldy airplane features getting in your way, I don't envy the landing gear work. All I can think of is I might try putting a bag over the gear, sandwich baggie or something. Nice video sir, I want a 70mm Viper more now.
Good idea, and wish I would have thought of that first!!! It was a pain to put those wheels on...and that night, we found lice in the kids hair - gross... but many, many cleanings, and laundry loads later, and now that's all clear, but it was a terrible evening, and tough week too... I was the only one in the family who didn't get them ;)
HI, congratulations for the videos. very beautiful and cared for. it shows that you invest time and attention. I would like to ask you for information if possible. I bought the viper 70 but I don't understand the behavior of the as3x. moving the model the ailerons practically do not move. just a little noise from the servos. in safe mode it works. do you have any suggestions. Thank you
It only works after giving 25% throttle, then if you still can't SEE it, you should be able to FEEL it with your fingers...lay your hand on the wing, across the aileron, then roll the plane. Some correction is very subtle, so you may not see it, but it's happening. Give it a try! Remember, the correction is OPPOSITE the direction you're moving the plane. It should be RESISTING the roll, pitch, or yaw of the aircraft.
I used the stuff in the video. It was way more work that I expected. I honestly can't (Even though it's not been that long) - I know....sounds like BS, but I don't remember... sorry. So many projects - hard to keep this detail straight.
Hey brain I have a question ? Back in the days there was no such thing as safe or as3x mode . We had to fly planes just the reciever . So my question is when you use safe on a plane is that considered a maiden ??
AS3X is a stabilizer, and SAFE is just MORE aid. I don't fly with SAFE, and haven't for some time. During many maiden flights, I will activate SAFE and show the controls, as I remove my hands from the sticks to share how well the plane flies without any human input, but just as a demo in the larger scheme of things. Maiden flight just refers to the FIRST flight, and nothing really more.
@@BrianPhillipsRC I know your not using safe you got skills bro 🗣️💯 but do you considered it flying the plane if it's on safe ? I feel like when you don't use safe you actually flew the plane . Nothing wrong with safe but you haven't really flew the plane if it was on safe all day . Not saying you did that I'm just saying in general
I totally agree with you about the landing gear bending. Especially the nose gear. That is it's one downfall. Otherwise I love the plane. Love your videos by the way. Keep up the good work. You too Megan.
This V2 and still no navigation lights on the wings. I got the version 1 that came with the AR636a receiver. That plane would unexpectedly glitch eventually leading to a hard bank to the right and eventually it crashed. I did get a V2 replacement from HH after showing them what happened. The V2 came with ferrite magnets on power cables and receiver leads. HH also replaced the AR636a receiver with the new AR631. Jet flies so much better than V1 and I have not noticed any issues with the wing cracking between the flaps and the retract slots. Just wish HH installed navigation lights and softer low bounce tires.
Awesome! I agree about the tires, and nav lights to me are pretty much a must...but since they have to hit market prices, they can't just put it all in every plane...Even thought I still want them too ;)
Great video, and definitely looking forward to the potential other red one haha! Congrats on 100k subscribers too! Quite an achievement especially considering the niche nature of long-form RC plane reviews. Seriously, bravo you guys.
Midwest summers are the best. Brian, you're a great pilot. Will we be seeing you work some inverted maneuvers? I also fly this plane and it's lovely upside down. Thanks to you and camera crew for making fun vids.
Always good. Ready for the 90 review when the shipping containers finally come in. The reason it’s not a NX7 is that extra 7th channel is not fully proportional (the 6 are), perfect for safe assignment.
@@BrianPhillipsRC hes right brian on a nx6 you have 6 proprortional channels and the 7th is simply on or off and is not proportional. hence its only +100 or -100 and is used for safe select
Hi @BrianPhillipsRC Would you happen to know what the flying weight is or the wing loading you're flying at with 5K pack? I am currently building an old SAPAC ViperJet and picked up the FMS V2 Platinum 12 blade fan... looking to run 6S and am concerned of flying weight. I am also putting the Avanti V3 retracts on this. Just wondering if I need to stick with a 3300 6S or if I can go 4K or even 5K 6s pack.
I do not. Sorry!!! I say the same thing to almost everyone who asks, if you can get the CG right, you can fly it....just keep in mind, you MUST GO FASTER to keep it flying ;) FLY HER TO THE GROUND!!!!!!!! Good luck!
Hey. love the content ! I am looking at the viper 70mm as my second plane after i am sufficient on my habu 4s. How long runway do i need on short cut gras with this model?
If the grass is very good, you don't need much for landings, but for takeoff, probably 150-200 foot would give you enough room...BUT I must warn you...the gear on the 70mm leave something to be desired in the arena of strength. Have you considered the 90mm??? I know it's a lot more money, but with GRASS ops, you might not be able to use the 70mm.... Just trying to help, don't kill the messenger ;) Viper bit.ly/3eLqcMX
@@BrianPhillipsRC I want to get my first larger size edf. What would you recommend. I have always watched your videos and love your reviews. What would be the best first larger edf. Great video
Awesome jet I was just watching the 90mm video by Horizon Hobby That guy flies the wings off that thing Reverse thrust is cool and will be great for your runway Nice flying Brian Great job as always Camera Crew 🔥👍✌️
hey brian how are you? im askin is i see you noticed some changes. in your opinion other than the rx is it better than the original one that came out. it seems that way. Also would it not be easier to use some m3 wheel collars for the axles to use those dubro wheels?
I think the wheel collars might need to be a bit too thin to fit, but honestly, sure that would be WAY better, if you CAN get them on too... Better other than the Rx...I can't say if the battery cavity is actually bigger, or if it just seems that way since I'm using SMART packs now, but wither way, they FIT NOW, and I had to do a CRAZY CARVE job the first time around!!! Glad you're here with us Michael!
I don’t have a NX6 but here is a write up from theparkpilot: “Channel 7 is not a fully proportional channel on the NX6. It cannot be used in mixes, nor does it include travel adjustment.” - so if I understand this correctly that 7th channel can only output the exact values of -100 and 100 (and maybe 0) - perfect for SAFE, but nothing in between. Where the others can do the full -100,-99,-98…100.
Hey Brian, Get A Roll Of Red 3/4" or 1" Tape & Add Full Front Wing Edges + Side Strips On This Viper + Paint The Nose Cone, White Elevater + Rudder Fins Red, I Think It Would Enhance Seeing It Flyin + Wouldn't Hurt The Color Scheme To Add More Red w/The White & Blue!? 😜 Thanks
@@BrianPhillipsRCOr you could laminate the bottom of the wings with yellow econokote which is light. And the visibility would be crazy. Also when you do the radio setup could you slow down and maybe do a dedicated radio video on what you do and why with close.ups of the screen, this would give Cam Crew a break for once, I for one would love to see that type of video. You are really fast on the radio. Hard to keep up. Thanks.
I have a viper 70mm with a problem, when i fly with retracts/landing gear out the plane is very sensible and has a big deviation to the left, but when retracts are in the plane flies fine… bought it second hand but should be fine, used a new transmitter dx6 for it, very strange… not sure if safe was active or not but still then its weird
Get it flying in AS3X and get the trims right....WHEELS DOWN, then wheels up, see if there's a change. Mine never has a change with gear up VS gear down. I wonder if you have something weird going on???
Hi Brian ! In your video on the viper v1, you said you increased the flaps, elevator and aileron travel. Did you do the same here? Too much increase in the travel of the flaps does it not increase the risk of stalling? Antoine from France
Hey Brian, got myself the viper today, together with a G1 5000, but with it sitting on top of the receiver, I kinda feel like it’s a little nose heavy, with the cg marks measured from the start of the wing. But when I measure from next to the intake it is balanced to tailheavy, should I be concerned or is it totally ok?
If the Nose mark makes you FEEL tail heavy, and the TAIL mark makes you feel nose heavy, you'll be "IN RANGE" :) Hope this makes sense! Get it right, so you can fly twice!!!! Good luck, and YOU GOT THIS!
I’m having a hard time finding any information on a flap/elevator mix. the only thing I can find online is to use a 10% down elevator on full flaps. I’m going to maiden mine tomorrow do you suggest using any flap/elevator mixing?
Watch the radio setup (the last part of this video). Then watch the maiden flights, and I'll talk about any adjustments I make. This is kinda what we do, but I can't remember all the details.
Hi Brian Do you remember what the gain values were in the radio for the receiver? Did you set up multiple flight modes ? If so , what were they ? Thanks
nope, I don't know what they are, and not sure that I can even get in to see them....the Forward Programming wasn't accessibility, if I remember right.
@@BrianPhillipsRC if you power the radio and plane up and scroll your wheel to the right you will see monitor and after that i think its two or three after monitor in telemetry it should show as3x and safe gains
If the ar631 tells how many g’s you pull, is it ok if you could tell me how many g’s this plane pulled? It’s incredible how a foam plane going 120+ MPH that is fairly heavy suddenly go from horizontal flight into vertical and not rip its wings off.
@@BrianPhillipsRC no worries, idk why but I’ve recently really been interested in how many g’s these rc planes can pull, so I was just a little curious. No need to rush if you want to do it.
Brian, I love it. Thank you this nice video. I habe two questions, hole you can help. If I am able to fly the Turbo Timber, Trojan, and the P51, (remember I al still new), I am able to fly this one? Also, is it possible in a „solid“ way. I don’t have that much room (maybe 150x400m) and free area like you. And only gras take off possible. What do you think?
Grass takeoff will be tough on the gear, unless it's very nicely manicured. This plane would be possibly a good fit for your experience level, but the grass will probably, regrettably, be an issue.
Hi Brian and camera crew I bought the low bounce tires but they are 1/2 inch too big for my opening on my Viper the tires that come with mine are 2 1/4 inch. Did you open your wing up or is your opening that much larger than my jet?
What size did you get? They sell the tires in a few different sizes, but I think we used 2" tires... Let me know if there's anything I can to do help you get the right parts. Thank you for bringing the problem to my attention, since I had no idea the link was going to 2 + 3/4" tires...
Ooo i like this one.. ordered a few other planes you reviewed based off of your review. This will be added to the list .. you're a goat brian thanks for all you and the misses do Is this any different then the habu sts 70mm edf jet ? Or is it just no safe & lipo ? Looks almost identical to it .. And is there any options to upgrade landing gear to avoid the same issue i got on my habu?. Cross wind threw the plane and i saved it but was to close to a up sweep hill so the front landing gear snapped. Wind wasnt anymore then 10 mph. But wind seemed to be coming from 2 diff angles
Very different than the Habu...WAY faster, and I think way better looking ;) But one of the easier flying EDF Jets offered at the moment. As for the Habu tires, just double check the size....Dubro DOES offer different sizes too... I added the link, I had forgotten it when I first released the video.
I just flew my new Viper 70mm today for the first time and it takes off and flies great, however landing the plane bounces even when greasing it in. I changed the landing gear to the spring ones from RC Castle thinking they would work but it still is difficult to land on a paved runway (haven't tried the grass as yet). I'm going to go back to the stock gear and replace the wheels with the soft foam from DuBro, don't know if they will be better or not. Any suggestions from Brian or the public would be very much appreciated as I like the plane.
I think the low-bounce tires worked well, and she settles down a bit better, but this plane is just a fun plane, and when you grease in the first landing, you'll be totally in love!!!
How hard or complicated would it be to have reverse thrust in this plane???? And would it break the bank to get the hardware to make it happen? I using the NX8 FYI. Thanks in advance.
Hi BRIAN GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS SIR. BRIAN IM WONDERING AS HORIZON HOBBY SAYS THIS IS NEW. HAVE THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM IF THE WING SPLITTING BY THE LANDING GEAR WAS A BAD PROBLEM. HOPING THEY HAVE DONE MORE THAN TELEMETRY RECEIVER. LOOKING FORWARD TO THE 90 MM
I thought we showed this...2" I thought.... it's printed on the side of the tire, and I know I showed it...but I don't remember this, that's why we film thousands of videos about this stuff ;)
i like about 1 thing that every jet ohready setup control horn so you dont have to worry about that easy to put it in and some other plane out there not easy at all for the new people thought
"so that was the first pass with this plane... and I just shit myself" lol I added that last part in there hahahahaa. That first past was smoking fast!
Controls in no particular order... Normal 1 Throttle 2 Rudder 3 Elevator 4 Ailerons 5 Gear 6 Flaps 7 SAFE/AS3X Selection Setup with 6 Channel Limitation 1 Throttle 2 Rudder 3 Elevator 4 Ailerons 5 Gear 6 SAFE/AS3X Selection (make the designation for flaps to control SAFE, then just d/c flaps) OR 1 Throttle 2 Rudder 3 Elevator 4 Ailerons 5 Gear 6 FLAPS AND SAFE/AS3X Selection (make the designation for flaps to control SAFE & Leave flaps plugged in)
@@BrianPhillipsRC does that mean that i must use the setting ailerons only and not 1 aileron and 1 flap ? I am sorry to Spam you with questions but this is my first plane that i fly with an spektrum Transmitter
Brian whenever I fly the futura on grass the front retract get ruined. It seems the spring in the gear don't give enough and the servo takes the brunt of the force. Can you recommend any fixes Thanks
I think you might need to fix the runway a bit, or maybe you're too nose heavy, meaning you have to get your speed up too much before roll???? This plane (the Viper 70mm) won't do grass without perfection for grass, but the Futura has done well for us. Hard to know for sure from where I'm sitting. Sorry I can't help more
Would keeping the ferrite cores help with cg? So that you don’t have to place the battery so far back. Maybe they’re there for cg purpose. I just bought this jet. Unfortunately I made the mistake of buying a PNP thinking that transferring my 637TA from an ultimate to this would be easy. Learned I had to buy a pc/usb cord to program it. The worst part is that HH doesn’t offer a template for SAFE/AS3X. The eflite fan community has helped me for the most part. I still have to set up SAFE but only AFTER I find the right gain values for both flight modes. Long story short…. Buy a BNF
You are correct in your findings ;) ALWAYS BUY BNF if you can possibly. It's a lot easier, but if you get a PNP and need help, check out my BEAVER (LOL) video, and you can see how we set that one up with AS3X and SAFE...

I’m having a hell of a time trying to get a 5000 6s to fit in my Viper V2, the hatch just doesn’t close, I have watched your video many times (you make the best videos by the way!) is there a trick I’m missing?
You aren't missing anything... Have you tried putting a knee on the canpy yet - LOL - Don't do that ;) You probably have to carve your canopy a bit, and move EVERYTHING as far as wiring and Rx back. It's a PAIN.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Definitely a pain...i think i will get a couple 4000 50c, those should fit without too much problem and be a bit lighter. Thanks for all you do!
Dude another great revisit and review. I think you would love the fms avanti v3. The best 70mm jet out there in my humble opinion and such a great value. Especially if you need to fix it or replace parts if you crash it like I have. So maybe get your hands on one..it would be perfect for your runway!! :) I got as3x in mine but doesn't really need it but makes it fly like a big edf. Congrats on 100k.
Thanks Joe! I'd like to do it, but I think Horizon Hobby wants me to review a few others right now, and I can't push back too hard on this one, since we're slammed as it is ;)
Hi I just started watching your videos I love them I also watched your video for the sport cub s2 plans It was really helpful since I just got It for my birthday
This Viper Jet Is Marketed As Horizon's Beginner Entry Level Larger Scale Jet, Above UMX Sizes... She's Very Easy To Fly, Just Stay Off The Throttle Down To 40%-50%, It Glides Really Great Under No Power Also! 😁
HI Brian, I'm completing my Viper v2 and notice a lot of the newer models have the Reflex V2 Flight Controller. It appears when you're landing and the throttle is reduced, this is when it becomes active to level your aircraft. My concern is if you need additional elevator for a flare, this unit may prevent it. I'm not an experience flyer, but I am worried about this feature? What are your thoughts on this addition to many of the FMS models?
Reflex comes on FMS models, and this is an Eflite BNF plane...so it comes with AS3X & SAFE. AS3X and SAFE VS Reflex - basically the same functions...stabilization and/or auto-leveling (and limited pitch and bank angles). As for "this kicks in on landing" - it kicks in when you want it on, vs when you don't. SAFE is only on if you activate it, and choose to turn it on, but AS3X is always on, unless you reprogram the Rx. Stabilization is helpful on this and other Viper offerings, but it won't stop the plane from slipping out from under you on base leg, low and slow - I've had it happen to me a few times.
If you're a new pilot, AS3X and SAFE area a must-have. As for Reflex, if you're not getting a BNF from Eflite (With Spektrum offerings of AS3X and SAFE) Reflex is a great second choice! We'll help you set it up so it's ONLY helpful.
So i have a question Brian. I just flew the maiden flight yesterday on the same plane. Love it. Awesome plane. I fly the 4000 lipo with it. Flew for the 4 mins and still had 67% battery left when I plugged into the charger this morning. Any recommendations on time?
Go longer, maybe 1 minute...and recheck...then if you feel comfortable...maybe bump it another minute...but don't jump all the way. When you land and it "calms down a bit" the cells will "RECOVER" back up a bit...
Hi Brian! I am wondering if there is way to disable the AX3S on this plane. I tried already setting the gains for flightmode 1 to 0 via bluetooth adapter programming and app but it seems like it doesn’t change anything, still AS3X active. Btw, I disabled Safe Select during binding as well. Reason why i wanna do this is because the plane crashed already twice (once during landing and once in normal flight), it did a sudden hard left turn and was not responding anymore. So i would like to exclude a fail function of the AS3X. Any thoughts on that? Can it be that the settings are somehow locked and can’t be changed? And after i was writing the comment and reviewing your video i recognize that i am actually not having the V2 :-( because it still has the AR636 receiver installed. I saw videos on youtube with this version having similar issues that the plane suddenly turning to one side and having no control anymore.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks Brian for your comment! You mean reset the AR636 to factory default to disable the AS3X completely? Btw, i am a big fan of your channel, always checking out to decide which new RC to buy next :-) Can’t wait for review of the Viper 90mm, possible next jet to buy because it has alteady much better retractable gears and more space for the electronic components and cables, which are the biggest weak points of the 70mm version.
Thank you Brian for good presentation. The only things I don't like are the red stars ..... ;-) The plane flies fantastic, but I consider to buy the Freewing Avanti 80 mm. I don't know is it the better choice ? Best regards !
I honestly haven't flown the Avanti, but if you're comparing 70 and 80mm EDF's, the 80mm will ALWAYS win. I CAN say the Futura 80mm is AMAZING....and I can say it's better than this for the landing gear, and the power...BUT it's 80mm...not a fair fight. The Futura 80mm would be CRUSHED by the 90mm Viper ;) Good luck...all three are amazing choices. Viper bit.ly/3eLqcMX VS Futura 80mm bit.ly/39N0khh + AR631 bit.ly/3pYNC3c VS WAIT - the Avanti is 70mm too - Avanti bit.ly/2ZEO2EG + AR631 bit.ly/3pYNC3c
It is too tight in the cockpit for all the wires. I moved the wires under the wings and built a kind of aerodynamic shell to cover them. It works very well and more easy to remove the wings and replug them. I could send you picture.
I love this plane. But it's by far the most difficult plane to land for me. If I'm too slow, a wing drops and the whole plane stalls and falls like a rock. If I'm too fast, it bounces all over the place on the runway. Two full plane replacements and one fuselage/wing replacement later, along with struts from RC-Castle and Avian ESC with reverse thrust, I'm still struggling to keep it in one piece when I land. I'm about ready to give up on it. And it isn't that I'm a bad pilot. This is my fourth plane (first jet) with almost two years experience. I figured since I mastered landing the June Nite P-51, this should be relatively easier to land. I was horribly wrong. Can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I just want to land it without destroying it. Once I can confidently do that, I'll be ordering the 90mm.
Here's a tip - Get the CG back a bit...MORE ELEVATOR AUTHORITY....and if that's not palatable for you, just FLY IT into a landing...don't try to flare...just do a slower, pass and bump into the ground. This is a good way to get a difficult to fly plane. Don't stall it into the ground, fly it like you're trying to stay low...then just slow down...keep level...it will drop, but if you're still flying, it won't "fall" like you experienced. When you tame a hard to fly plane, you'll be so excited. Keep at it!
You, Nate from RC Saylors, and so many others make it look so easy. I study the landings in these videos and you guys make this plane your b***h. Lol! I'm definitely going to try "flying" it onto the runway. I think I understand what you mean. Like, keeping a shallow approach as much as possible. Thank you for the tip!
Hey Brian, I am new to flying, have been learning on a carbon cub s2. I am getting pretty comfortable with it in safe mode, when I switch to intermediate or experienced mode it drastically goes out of control as if my trim goes out of calibration between the modes. Is this normal? Do you have any suggestions? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
1) You probably don't realize how much you're depending on SAFE. 2) You probably have trim that's wrong, and WAY off...so you'll have to get WAY up there, and come out of SAFE in level flight at 40-50% throttle and get things straightened out. SAFE will hid trim issues. This is probably your issue. Good luck Tan!
True!
Jeff, Can you please give me more descriptive details on the Avanti 2 gear strut upgrade as to where you purchased it, thanks.
@@jeffhenderson934 Jeff, thanks, I'll look at motion RC to see if I can figure it out. The Viper is great but has a serious bouncing problem.
I think Mrs. Phillips is the Best Videographer doing video's . Very few are even close to your skill level in quality of flight time recording . Steady , Super visible . Well done . Thanks . Without You there would be No Uncle Brian .
Couldn't agree more! She is good!
Thanks!!! We try really hard, and so glad you notice. Thanks for being here with us!
@@BrianPhillipsRC You're definitely doing something right. Everyone at the field refers to your advice on technical issues!
I got mine (70mm) delivered yesterday on fathers Day!! Ordered it friday morning...waiting on the 90mm!!...Very happy u did this one again!...THX
NICE!!! Good luck Sean!
Camera woman deserves a f-ing raise bro your flying and her production is amazing 🎉
Fiiiiissssshoooooomm!!!
That first pass was so sick and camera crew had it locked in nohow.
Great display Ace.
AWESOME!!!
Caught the 1st wire on landing at 17:49....carrier qualified. What a sweet jet.
LOL!!!
Brian and camera crew, thank you for helping with the programming. I appreciate the work you do on these videos, if definitely helps.
Glad they're helping you Mark! We know that the process of doing it can be daunting at first, but once you've done it two or three times, then you'll just come back to watch me crash planes into random things - LOL ;)
You were not kidding when you said you had several videos hitting very quickly in the next week. Another great video thanks for the info.
More than you may know ;) We have so many in queue, we could do 4 per week!
Can you provide link on the dubro tires, thanks
That plane loved to bounce and attempt to fly again with a bad result.
Low Bounce Tires bit.ly/3gLhSMk
I agree...why not stock? Way too expensive??? Either way, I LOVE this plane, and just wish the retracts would be a bit more solid with grass.
Chris, at 22:47 for full flaps do you recommend the fully extended "barn door" full flap setting on the Viper 70mm maximize hampering the speed?
You must have extraordinary depth perception. I'd love to be that confident in such confined spaces. Good job..
It's a GREAT plane if you have a good strip to fly from, but if it's a rough one, or grass, it's a belly lander ;(
Can't wait to share our 90mm Viper Experience - coming REAL soon ;)
Awesome video thanks Brian and camera crew.
Thanks!!!
It looks so realistic against those clouds. Wonderful!
Totally agree!
Another GREAT video and review Brian thanks and thanks Camera crew !!!!
You're welcome, and thank YOU for being here with us!
Waiting on my Viper 70 mm delivery. Can’t wait to Maiden. Nice flight as always Brian!
Have fun! Great plane!!!
Nice. I just starting to fly my E-Flite 70 Viper. Where did you get, the Boeing tiple 7 from, that in the background?
I was the only one in the family who didn't get them ;)
did you get these black weight things wrapped around the leads and the battery connector? just got me one of these and a twin otter
The Ferrite Core? I take them off, but don't tell the FCC ;)
I have another question....did you take the Ferrite collars off to create more room for the wires??
Yeah. It's an FCC thing...waste of room, but some might have had issues with RF - I have not ;)
HI, congratulations for the videos. very beautiful and cared for. it shows that you invest time and attention.
I always learn something from your videos.
Glad to hear it! Thanks John ;)
Did you have to use a wheel collar with those Dubro wheels?
I was waiting for a sonic boom on that puppy!
LOL - I tried my best ;)
I like the new tires, could they also be used on the Habu 70mm STS? The stock Habu tires are a little bouncy on landings.
Sure, but might want to double check the size is right with 2"...
I totally agree with you about the landing gear bending. Especially the nose gear. That is it's one downfall. Otherwise I love the plane. Love your videos by the way. Keep up the good work. You too Megan.
For sure! Thanks Anthony!!!
Awesome! I agree about the tires, and nav lights to me are pretty much a must...but since they have to hit market prices, they can't just put it all in every plane...Even thought I still want them too ;)
How do you tell by looking at the box in the hobby shop if it is a v1 or v2?
Can't wait to see that 90mm when it gets released
The 90mm flies 10x better which is hard to believe. Flies much larger than a 90mm jet too. Best flying sport jet I’ve ever flown
We have one on the way, and so sorry for the delay ;)
Great video, and definitely looking forward to the potential other red one haha! Congrats on 100k subscribers too! Quite an achievement especially considering the niche nature of long-form RC plane reviews. Seriously, bravo you guys.
Thanks!!! 90mm is coming, but we're still waiting for it :(
Hey buddy I have a question for you does the battery go towards the receiver Or closer to the front I'm using a 3300
If you want to be able to flare on landing, you'll have to get that battery almost, if not on top of your Rx.
How u get the jet picture on your radio? My NX8 just shows a prop plane.
Watch the radio setup. We show how to do all this stuff.
Midwest summers are the best. Brian, you're a great pilot. Will we be seeing you work some inverted maneuvers? I also fly this plane and it's lovely upside down. Thanks to you and camera crew for making fun vids.
I don't know yet, but we'll be doing the 90mm pretty soon too ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC 90mm looks awesome in videos. With reverse thrust you can land on your driveway no prob. Fly great!
Always good. Ready for the 90 review when the shipping containers finally come in. The reason it’s not a NX7 is that extra 7th channel is not fully proportional (the 6 are), perfect for safe assignment.
Interesting, seems I was able to move it through the whole range on mine???? Can't you??? Or is this at a REDUCED range???
@@BrianPhillipsRC hes right brian on a nx6 you have 6 proprortional channels and the 7th is simply on or off and is not proportional. hence its only +100 or -100 and is used for safe select
Hi @BrianPhillipsRC
Would you happen to know what the flying weight is or the wing loading you're flying at with 5K pack? Just wondering if I need to stick with a 3300 6S or if I can go 4K or even 5K 6s pack.
I do not. Sorry!!!
I say the same thing to almost everyone who asks, if you can get the CG right, you can fly it....just keep in mind, you MUST GO FASTER to keep it flying ;) FLY HER TO THE GROUND!!!!!!!!
Good luck!
@@BrianPhillipsRC Hey thanks for the reply and that is good advice for sure.
Hey. love the content !
I know it's a lot more money, but with GRASS ops, you might not be able to use the 70mm....

hey brian how are you? im askin is i see you noticed some changes. in your opinion other than the rx is it better than the original one that came out. it seems that way.
Love mine. Brian, have you found a way to get more turning radius on the ground? Thanks
I haven't yet, and this IS one of the annoying things on some planes, but this plane is otherwise quite good!!!
Interesting...not sure how you would make a PWM channel do such a thing...
Love the sound. My batteries are not lasting long in Tucson, Arizona's 115 degree heat.
On your NX? Or the plane?
I got the bigger battery for the NX and it's a LOT better.

I can't recall...but this one was close to the manual call outs.
Do you think a 4500 mah whould fit in this plane ?
Yes - It will. You might always have to make some room ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC makes sense I think, I’ll let know how it went!
Had my maiden today, went really well but the landing went as if I was landing on a bouncy castle😅
I’m having a hard time finding any information on a flap/elevator mix. the only thing I can find online is to use a 10% down elevator on full flaps. I’m going to maiden mine tomorrow do you suggest using any flap/elevator mixing?

nope, I don't know what they are, and not sure that I can even get in to see them....the Forward Programming wasn't accessibility, if I remember right.

Futura is amazing, and better retracts, so you're already set...I just LIKE the way this one looks better.
That is a hint to turn safe on
What's a hint?
Nice! its a pretty good looking plane!
Totally agree!
If the ar631 tells how many g’s you pull, is it ok if you could tell me how many g’s this plane pulled? It’s incredible how a foam plane going 120+ MPH that is fairly heavy suddenly go from horizontal flight into vertical and not rip its wings off.
I agree, but sorry, that telemetry data is gone now... I can try to share it at some point on a future flight
How much flight time do you get one that big ol 5000mah? That battery is huge fr the 70mm viper!
Hi Brian and camera crew

Ooo i like this one.. ordered a few other planes you reviewed based off of your review. This will be added to the list .. you're a goat brian thanks for all you and the misses do
Is this any different then the habu sts 70mm edf jet ?
So, Brian... seriously from a huge fan who has learned a lot from your youtbe-ery...
Hoppy Thanksgiving
May your liquid encouragement be merry...
I think the low-bounce tires worked well, and she settles down a bit better, but this plane is just a fun plane, and when you grease in the first landing, you'll be totally in love!!!
hello brian i like to ask if i run 6s 5000amh and 100C do it still work the viper jet because i got the same viper as you
That's fine, but it's hard to get the CG tail heavy enough for good flare on landings. 4000mAh is easier, but not a requirement.
How hard or complicated would it be to have reverse thrust in this plane???? And would it break the bank to get the hardware to make it happen? I using the NX8 FYI. Thanks in advance.
It would be pretty easy, in fact, but it would be pretty expensive. All you need is an Avian ESC.
Sure. I only KNOW about the Rx upgrade to AR631
@@BrianPhillipsRC HI BRIAN HAD MESSAGE FROM HH AND YES THEY HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM. VERY HAPPY 👍♥️🇬🇧🇺🇸
What size wheels were those you didn't say what size wheels that you're using
I thought we showed this...2" I thought.... it's printed on the side of the tire, and I know I showed it...but I don't remember this, that's why we film thousands of videos about this stuff ;)
...Oh BUT the NOSE wheel should be smaller, if you want it to look cooler ;)
i like about 1 thing that every jet ohready setup control horn so you dont have to worry about that
easy to put it in and some other plane out there not easy at all for the new people thought
For sure!!! Horizon Hobby almost always does it this way anymore ;)
A beauty good filming and flying. 👌
Thanks!
"so that was the first pass with this plane... and I just shit myself" lol I added that last part in there hahahahaa. That first past was smoking fast!
LOL ;)
IKR! Camera Crew has nerves of steel!
I have a dx 6e and i want to fly without flaps but with safe how am i able to Do this
Controls in no particular order...
Normal
1 Throttle
2 Rudder
3 Elevator
4 Ailerons
5 Gear
6 Flaps
7 SAFE/AS3X Selection
Setup with 6 Channel Limitation
1 Throttle
2 Rudder
3 Elevator
4 Ailerons
5 Gear
6 SAFE/AS3X Selection (make the designation for flaps to control SAFE, then just d/c flaps)
OR
1 Throttle
2 Rudder
3 Elevator
4 Ailerons
5 Gear
6 FLAPS AND SAFE/AS3X Selection (make the designation for flaps to control SAFE & Leave flaps plugged in)
@@BrianPhillipsRC does that mean that i must use the setting ailerons only and not 1 aileron and 1 flap ? I am sorry to Spam you with questions but this is my first plane that i fly with an spektrum Transmitter
You have a cool driveway/runway!
I agree!!! Thanks ;)
Brian whenever I fly the futura on grass the front retract get ruined. It seems the spring in the gear don't give enough and the servo takes the brunt of the force. Can you recommend any fixes
Thanks
I think you might need to fix the runway a bit, or maybe you're too nose heavy, meaning you have to get your speed up too much before roll???? This plane (the Viper 70mm) won't do grass without perfection for grass, but the Futura has done well for us.
Hard to know for sure from where I'm sitting. Sorry I can't help more
Can you do a video of the FMS Beaver Version 2? I would really like to see what you think about this model!
Done ;) (Sorry week or more behind on comments - LOL)
Anyone can provide the links for the low bounce tire mentioned in the Video...Thanks
Yes, so sorry I forgot!!! I'll add the link NOW ;)
Low Bounce Tires bit.ly/3gLhSMk
thank you for bringing this to my attention!!!
@@BrianPhillipsRC Hi Brian the link you sent is for 2- 3/4 inch tires, the wheel well is only 2 -1/2in.on the viper!!
@@BrianPhillipsRC that beaver video though..😉
Nice landing 👍
Thanks James!
does this have reverse thurst like the 90mm ?
Not unless you would replace the ESC ;( Sorry.
...... Merci d'avance pour vôtre réponse ... Bien à Vous .... Stéphane de France .....
Because they think the Havoc is too competitive with the eflite offering - LOL ;) (Really, that's the reason they won't send it...at least I believe)
Thanks for the question, and being part of our audience!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Parce qu'ils pensent que Havoc est trop compétitif avec l'offre eflite - LOL ;) (Vraiment, c'est la raison pour laquelle ils ne l'enverront pas... du moins je crois)
Merci pour la question et faire partie de notre public !
Awesome Bird! Loving the content, keep it coming!
Thanks! Will do!
I need one of these in my life. 💯💥
Yes, you do!!!
I’m having a hell of a time trying to get a 5000 6s to fit in my Viper V2, the hatch just doesn’t close, I have watched your video many times (you make the best videos by the way!) is there a trick I’m missing?
You aren't missing anything... Have you tried putting a knee on the canpy yet - LOL - Don't do that ;)
You probably have to carve your canopy a bit, and move EVERYTHING as far as wiring and Rx back. It's a PAIN.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Definitely a pain...i think i will get a couple 4000 50c, those should fit without too much problem and be a bit lighter. Thanks for all you do!
Dude another great revisit and review. I think you would love the fms avanti v3. The best 70mm jet out there in my humble opinion and such a great value. Especially if you need to fix it or replace parts if you crash it like I have. So maybe get your hands on one..it would be perfect for your runway!! :) I got as3x in mine but doesn't really need it but makes it fly like a big edf. Congrats on 100k.
Thanks Joe! I'd like to do it, but I think Horizon Hobby wants me to review a few others right now, and I can't push back too hard on this one, since we're slammed as it is ;)
Did a little carving.. a 5400 fits..!
NICE!!!!
Hi I just started watching your videos I love them I also watched your video for the sport cub s2 plans It was really helpful since I just got It for my birthday
Great to hear! So many videos, you could watch for about 3 week straight!!! Hope you'll check some more out ;)
Is it difficult to fly because I have a carbon cub s2 I almost crash it but noting break.
This Viper Jet Is Marketed As Horizon's Beginner Entry Level Larger Scale Jet, Above UMX Sizes... She's Very Easy To Fly, Just Stay Off The Throttle Down To 40%-50%, It Glides Really Great Under No Power Also! 😁
Ok thank you 🙏
This plane is harder to fly than the Habu (70mm), or the F-15 (64mm)
Oh
HI Brian,
I'm completing my Viper v2 and notice a lot of the newer models have the Reflex V2 Flight Controller. It appears when you're landing and the throttle is reduced, this is when it becomes active to level your aircraft. My concern is if you need additional elevator for a flare, this unit may prevent it. I'm not an experience flyer, but I am worried about this feature? What are your thoughts on this addition to many of the FMS models?
Reflex comes on FMS models, and this is an Eflite BNF plane...so it comes with AS3X & SAFE. AS3X and SAFE VS Reflex - basically the same functions...stabilization and/or auto-leveling (and limited pitch and bank angles).
As for "this kicks in on landing" - it kicks in when you want it on, vs when you don't. SAFE is only on if you activate it, and choose to turn it on, but AS3X is always on, unless you reprogram the Rx.
Stabilization is helpful on this and other Viper offerings, but it won't stop the plane from slipping out from under you on base leg, low and slow - I've had it happen to me a few times.
If you're a new pilot, AS3X and SAFE area a must-have.
As for Reflex, if you're not getting a BNF from Eflite (With Spektrum offerings of AS3X and SAFE) Reflex is a great second choice!
We'll help you set it up so it's ONLY helpful.
So i have a question Brian. I just flew the maiden flight yesterday on the same plane. Love it. Awesome plane. I fly the 4000 lipo with it. Flew for the 4 mins and still had 67% battery left when I plugged into the charger this morning. Any recommendations on time?
Go longer, maybe 1 minute...and recheck...then if you feel comfortable...maybe bump it another minute...but don't jump all the way. When you land and it "calms down a bit" the cells will "RECOVER" back up a bit...
@@BrianPhillipsRC great. Thanks for the response man. Will give it a try today. Great videos btw. Keep it up
Sweet, loved my little Viper until it hit that darn cement light pole. Now where's the 90mm viper!?
Coming SOON!
@@BrianPhillipsRC ok it's been two days. That is more than soon ago. We NEED the 90!
What is the difference between this version and version 1?
The Reciever in this one is now, the AR631 in the V2...rest I THINK is the same, but I sure had a better time with the battery fitting!
Hi Brian! I am wondering if there is way to disable the AX3S on this plane. I tried already setting the gains for flightmode 1 to 0 via bluetooth adapter programming and app but it seems like it doesn’t change anything, still AS3X active. Btw, I disabled Safe Select during binding as well. Reason why i wanna do this is because the plane crashed already twice (once during landing and once in normal flight), it did a sudden hard left turn and was not responding anymore. So i would like to exclude a fail function of the AS3X.
Any thoughts on that? Can it be that the settings are somehow locked and can’t be changed?
And after i was writing the comment and reviewing your video i recognize that i am actually not having the V2 :-( because it still has the AR636 receiver installed. I saw videos on youtube with this version having similar issues that the plane suddenly turning to one side and having no control anymore.
You have to reset to factory defaults.
I wouldn't. This plane will FALL OUT FROM UNDER ITSELF if you slow her down too much.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks Brian for your comment! You mean reset the AR636 to factory default to disable the AS3X completely?
Btw, i am a big fan of your channel, always checking out to decide which new RC to buy next :-) Can’t wait for review of the Viper 90mm, possible next jet to buy because it has alteady much better retractable gears and more space for the electronic components and cables, which are the biggest weak points of the 70mm version.
BTW, My wifes cuticle cutters spring loaded, work outstanding for removal and install of the c clips on the wheel axles.(she better not find out lol).
I like it! Good idea!
Thank you Brian for good presentation. The only things I don't like are the red stars ..... ;-)
The plane flies fantastic, but I consider to buy the Freewing Avanti 80 mm. I don't know is it the better choice ?
Best regards !
I honestly haven't flown the Avanti, but if you're comparing 70 and 80mm EDF's, the 80mm will ALWAYS win.
I CAN say the Futura 80mm is AMAZING....and I can say it's better than this for the landing gear, and the power...BUT it's 80mm...not a fair fight. The Futura 80mm would be CRUSHED by the 90mm Viper ;)
Good luck...all three are amazing choices.
It is too tight in the cockpit for all the wires. I moved the wires under the wings and built a kind of aerodynamic shell to cover them. It works very well and more easy to remove the wings and replug them. I could send you picture.
Thanks for the info!
Nice job
Thanks!
I love this plane. But it's by far the most difficult plane to land for me. If I'm too slow, a wing drops and the whole plane stalls and falls like a rock. If I'm too fast, it bounces all over the place on the runway. Two full plane replacements and one fuselage/wing replacement later, along with struts from RC-Castle and Avian ESC with reverse thrust, I'm still struggling to keep it in one piece when I land. I'm about ready to give up on it. And it isn't that I'm a bad pilot. This is my fourth plane (first jet) with almost two years experience. I figured since I mastered landing the June Nite P-51, this should be relatively easier to land. I was horribly wrong. Can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I just want to land it without destroying it. Once I can confidently do that, I'll be ordering the 90mm.
yes, this plane will "Fall out from under itself" if you get into too steep a flare, EVEN with good speed, in ground effect.
Here's a tip - Get the CG back a bit...MORE ELEVATOR AUTHORITY....and if that's not palatable for you, just FLY IT into a landing...don't try to flare...just do a slower, pass and bump into the ground. This is a good way to get a difficult to fly plane. Don't stall it into the ground, fly it like you're trying to stay low...then just slow down...keep level...it will drop, but if you're still flying, it won't "fall" like you experienced.
When you tame a hard to fly plane, you'll be so excited. Keep at it!
P.S. The 90mm is easier to land - LOL ;) Seriously!
You, Nate from RC Saylors, and so many others make it look so easy. I study the landings in these videos and you guys make this plane your b***h. Lol! I'm definitely going to try "flying" it onto the runway. I think I understand what you mean. Like, keeping a shallow approach as much as possible. Thank you for the tip!
Hey Brian,
I am new to flying, have been learning on a carbon cub s2.
I am getting pretty comfortable with it in safe mode, when I switch to intermediate or experienced mode it drastically goes out of control as if my trim goes out of calibration between the modes.
Is this normal?
Do you have any suggestions?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
1) You probably don't realize how much you're depending on SAFE. 2) You probably have trim that's wrong, and WAY off...so you'll have to get WAY up there, and come out of SAFE in level flight at 40-50% throttle and get things straightened out. SAFE will hid trim issues. This is probably your issue.
Good luck Tan!
