    Just found your channel a few weeks ago. I’m back in the hobby after a couple decades of work/life getting in the way. I saw a few timestamps of multiple hours and thought who would watch those? Apparently me. I find myself binging your longer videos.
    I’ve clicked way too many of your links and bought way too many planes, that I know I’m not ready to fly. But with back orders and remote ID looming I figured, why not?
    Just wanted to tell you I appreciate your content. Your deep dives into setups and reviews of these planes are great.

    I wrote to you previously regarding difficulties landing the 70mm and you gave me some really good advice on landing it more successfully. You also noted that the 90mm lands better. I can't tell you how correct you are! This plane flies and lands like butter! This is my absolute favorite plane right now! I sold that 70mm and never looked back! Thanks for everything Brian and Camera Crew!

    Never thought I’d say this to you. You’ve helped me on so many planes I’ve lost count. Foam repair, transmitter setup, if I go way back- “Why CG is important”, and why Dual Rates can do for you.” So I’m surprised in all the videos you didn’t mention the Eflite 90mm Viper was a big Trainer. After the uneventful maiden I tried to make fly like crap. I moved the 5000 and 6000 batteries all over the battery bay. Just flies straight and level. I’ve never own a plane or edf that was as easy to land. This edf was designed for people who have lost the will to live. It’s the first plane I’ve owned you can actually fly and make your turns using one hand.

    Hello Brian and camera crew I just want to tell you both thank you for all the time you guys put into the channel. I have learned so much from the channel I am a new pilot and without your channel I would of quit the hobby already. Now maybe you all ready know this but you can set the NX 8 back to its original style keyboard before this recent software upgrade. You need to go into system setup and scroll down to system setting and press enter then scroll down to next and press enter then scroll down to keyboard and select Legacy. And I can't take credit for this I saw a video made by BD Tennesse here on TH-cam.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC

      Firstly, welcome and thanks for being here and a part of our channel.
      Yes, thanks, we did figure out how to change back to the Legacy Keyboard. Sometimes we have these "early releases" for a while before we can publish our content...which was the case on this plane too, so since we had this plane RIGHT after the software update, we hadn't yet figured it out. One of our subscribers mentioned it though ;)

      WEIRD!!!!
      Got home from my hobby store at 1am with my new Viper 90mm BNF basic and fired up this video for another exciting episode of “Build a New Plane with Brian”.
      Excitedly took the plane box out of the brown cardboard box and instantly noticed the large white sticker 5x4 inches that says, ”DEMO ONLY NOT FOR RESALE”.
      It’s now past 2am so not gonna build it as bad as I want to until I get some feedback.

    Liked the Viper90 so much I bought another one ARF. Since I never mentally matured past the age of 15 I thought to myself, “How could you make the Viper90 even better? MORE POWER!” I put the FMS Platinum 90mm 4075-kv1500 and the 130 amp Avian ESC.
    Not sure which was my EDF OF THE YEAR 2022 was. It’s a toss up- Viper90, or the Futura v3, or the FMS 80mm Bae Hawk. All three at the field on the same day is as good as it gets.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to agree - three GREAT picks. I LOVE the flight characteristics, and the fact that you can slow them ALL down with flaps OR flare...OR BOTH ;) What a great group of amazing fliers!
      P.S. If I don't mention it enough, AS3X/SAFE definitely edges out the Reflex V2. While being totally acceptable in stabilization mode, the Reflex V2 is less well refined, and it shows more in auto-leveling mode. I don't use SAFE or Auto Leveling except essentially to show it off for the new pilots and "Prove" it will work, but the stab - I almost always fly with stabilizer of some form. Glad if someone's wanting to keep to a slightly lower price point, they can squeeze a few bucks off the price, but also and more importantly, for Futaba and OpenTx users - this is UUUUGE ;)

    I think they added the capacitor because of the reverse thrust, when you go from forward to reverse with rotational mass, amperage goes thru the roof and voltage can drop to very low output..

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not on the other Avian equipped planes with Thrust Reverse...I think it's the size and power loading of the servos ;) Either way, wish we had them on all the stabilized Rx'es...that would be cheap insurance.

  • @Legalmachinist
    @Legalmachinist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Rather than fiddling with Mix to neutralize the reverse thrust in the middle position I have found it easier to go to Digital Switch and adjusting the percentages there for each position (did it this way for Timber Evolution). Also, I assign a voice command for each switch position used and review that before connecting the plane battery since not all planes will be identical but agree, they should be as much the same as possible. While flying and changing a switch I find it helpful that it announces the new setting which confirms I got the right switch. The NX transmitters are great. Not sure this Viper would work well off our grass field though. Otherwise pretty impressive!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      She'll do great on grass ;) Obviously BETTER on pavement, but I did change my switch settings a bit. I was going to try the "Digital Switch Settings" next time to see how well it works.

  • @keitha.9788
    @keitha.9788 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've watched a number of videos on the Viper 90mm from various people. The only issue I've seen with it is that it has a Very abrupt stall characteristic. It appears that the outer wing stalls before the inboard part of the wing, and the wing suddenly drops. In Brian's video you can see this at 5:02 when landing. Brian does a great job of recovering. Wish Horizon Hobby would modify the airfoil.......
    As a side note, with many single engine propeller aircraft (like Cessna's and Piper's) it is very common to pull up the nose slightly while landing and stall just inches off the ground. With high-performance aircraft, one literally flies the aircraft on to the runway. This is one of the most difficult issues many pilots have when transitioning to high-performance aircraft.......

    Just a suggestion concerning the length of the videos…how about one just focusing on the flying of the model and another demonstrating the radio setup? I’m new to the RC world and the radio setup and terms used are new to me. A slower, more explanatory setup would be useful to me.
    Love the videos though. Keep up the good work!

      Doug, first off, welcome, and thanks for being here with us! I realize this video is a lot to take in, and we want to help you as you work your way through the ranks of RC aircraft, but please hear my response in the way I mean to say it...
      This plane is not a beginner plane. We do a LOT of beginner planes though, and thoes videos are WAY more explanatory, like the one about to come out covering the Apprentice 1.2m RTF (GREAT BEGINNER PLANE). We talk about just about everything. You would learn a lot more from that, than this, about a more advanced plane. We have to kinda take queues from the plane we're building, since we really don't actually know who's gonna be watching.
      Hope this helps, and if you weren't already aware, we've got thousands of videos up to help you along your way, BUT I can say our newer footage is better quality, and we cover things with a higher level of accuracy, since I'm getting better with this stuff myself. You have to keep in mind I'm also a fairly new RC pilot (about 6 years), but not new to electronics, and controls, or teaching technical things.
      If you want some GOOD starters, here's a short list...and keep in mind, we have re-reviewed some of these, and the NEW (formally Mini...now it's just the) 1.2m Apprentice, will be released real soon with updates to the radio.

      Probably because this one was extra susceptible? I don't know, but you can get them for other planes. I almost bought the 70mm a couple of months ago but held off and bought some other planes. Now I am ready fora first EDF. Would this be ok as a first jet or stick with the 70mm?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, since this one has more robust landing gear, it might JUST beat the 70mm out...BUT you will want to have a pretty HUGE environment for flying this plane, since it's BIG.
      I don't want to give you bad advice, but really, your budget makes the difference on this one...if you can crash an destroy a $700 plane and sleep at night, then this plane is NOT an issue....BUT if you're more inclined to be nervous as heck, like I would be, then maybe do the Habu SS or STS 70mm, or the F-15 64mm (Great easier choice).
      There's also a few other great choices that might be a bit more economical that would have you loving the plane while you advance through the ranks, like the F-16 70mm...
      Honestly, it all depends on what you think of your skills, how your budget will handle the hit, and where you fly - the latter being the most important. If you fly from an aircraft carrier like me, you will wish you got the 70mm first, but if you're flying from a 750 foot long X 100 foot wide runway with 3 miles of clearing to and from the strip - get the 90mm and love it right away ;)

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They also make an AR630, but for ~ $5 more - I'll get the antenna on an AR631 ;)
      I have a 4Ch and 6Ch air receiver, but since I want SAFE/AS3X, largely to share with our audience, but also, I WANT AS3X, even when it's NOT needed...so I have only used the 6Ch, AR620 in one plane, and I wish I would have put in an AR631 or an AR630.
      Horizon Hobby claims they have just as good range, but I don't believe it. I will only use it on a small plane, or something I can RUN AFTER - LOL ;)

    Just got mine last week, getting ready for first flight. The pilot now has no mustache....also one of the elevator servos was NOT reversed so they work opposite each other (like rollerons). I contacted Horizon but no joy as yet from them. So first flight is delayed until they can get me a replacement/fix.
    Brian, a couple of critiques on your radio setup section:
    First off it was helpful and appreciated. But I did find it hard to follow as you digress too much during the explanations with other comments or observations that are not germane to what is being taught/demonstrated. It also helps if you go a bit more slowly. I know we can pause/rewind but it does help as these are critical radio setups. (for example it took me a bit to figure out that you had to enter the SMART ESC setup right after connecting the battery....you can't get to the ESC programming menu after the ESC has completed it's initialization)
    Also when you demo'd the reverse thrust it was like you were learning it as you filmed. It would be better to learn it then film once you have the steps down and can demo them in the correct order and edit out the 'learning' you experienced. Just makes it easier to follow.
    Keep up the great work. A few guys in the club are familiar with your reviews.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow - the elevators are defecting opposite - that's terrible!!!
      If you get tired of waiting for HH to get back to you, there's two things you can do in the mean time...
      1) Pull the servo and open it up and then swap any two of three wires on the FEEDBACK pot, and swap the motor leads...this will effectively make the servo into a reverse servo.
      2) Put one of these in series with one or the other elevator servos...
      Servo Signal Reverser (Horizon Hobby) bit.ly/3B9nVpT
      Servo Signal Reverser (Amazon) amzn.to/3bpECDf
      Servo Signal Reverser (Banggood) bit.ly/3tkn9yN
      ....I've done both on separate projects in the past to remedy such an issue.
