  • Here's the PS5 overheating FIX that actually works! Doing this will stop your PlayStation 5 from shutting off.. If your PS5 turns off by itself you can try cleaning the PS5 power supply, & your PS5 will run like new! I show you step-by-step how to clean the power supply for PlayStation 5 & fix your PS5 from overheating or randomly shutting off. If your PS5 power supply overheats you can take apart the console & use basic household items to fully clean the PS5 system power supply. Doing this has many benefits like helping your PS5 last longer, run quieter, & prevent overheating when playing PS5 games that use a LOT of performance. If your PS5 ever experiences overheating problems you can either send your PS5 to Sony, or clean it yourself.
You can follow this guide to help clean the PS5 power supply at your own risk. Doing this is NOT for the average user, & requires technical skill to complete this project. For MORE tips & tricks or How-To guides for your PlayStation 5, remember to SUBSCRIBE.

For anyone that might be planning on doing this and feel a bit leery, I would recommend taking pics of everything before disassembly as you go. Also, get some paper cups or other small containers for all of the different screws. You might even want to label them with where they came from. Doing this keeps stuff from getting lost or mixed up and gives you pics to reference when putting everything back together and connecting the wires. 🙂

I'm no longer confident with disassembling and reassembling PS products, therefore, I'm certainly not going to go in depth with this particular machine.
I recently disassembled PS4 (original model) in order to clean off and reapply thermal paste inside the CPU. I followed a tutorial, which I thought was easy to follow along. During the disc drive detachment, the tutorial said to LIFT the lip to remove ribbon, instead of PRESSING DOWN. A tiny piece of the T-shaped ribbon broke off inside the lip, but I didn't think anything of it at the time. As it turned out, now the power & eject button no longer responds, and disc drive no longer accepts any BR & games. :(

@@jun4466 Yes I attempted to fix my PS1, unsuccessfully. Fixed 2 x PS2s by replacing the laser but both eventually broke again and bought another off marketplace. Have a PS3 that won't read BluRay discs just DVDs but don't have a security torx to undo the screws. At least 4 PS2 cordless controllers have ended up in a worse state after attempting to fix them.
At least, for now, my PS4 and PS5 are working well although I do have a PS4 controller that half the buttons don't work. I found a page that suggested taking it apart and reseating the flexible plastic circuit board (PCB). Did all that 3 times with no luck and the person said I'd need to order a new PCB. Haven't done that yet.

If you're not confident enough to do a full disassembly, just go as far as removing the fan. Then get a UV torch and a long q-tip used in electricals. The torch highlights where dust is, making it glow light blue.
With the fan removed, you look down the cavity space, down the length of the console below the fan, and you can see the 'cheese grate' PSU holes, and fish out any dust bunnies with your q-tip.
Personally, I did a full disassembly and found it not really worth it in my opinion. There wasnt much dust in my heatsinks. Most of it was on the PSU holes which I could have just as easily cleaned using the way I described.
Its quite a design flaw to have these important vents, facing upwards, directly underneath the fan... dust just falls straight onto them.

The main problem is dust build up is not the flaw here but rather the metal liquid compound which eventually leave dry spots and will start going bad.
Sony should have went for those liquid changing thermal pads instead which start to get liquid with heat and have close to liquid metal heat transfer.

Get a small handheld vacuum with a bendable hose. If you take the fan out, you can bend the hose into the power supply and vacuum it out. I havent seen any dust buildup on mine and ive opened my ps5 4 times since owning it. The fan will get a decent amount of dust on it as well as the exhaust vents. But a nornal vacuum will reach those and you dont need a special mini vacuum for those. Im guessing as long as you consistently clean the fan and exhuast ports, the power supply won't get buildup on it.

Apparently, the liquid metal slid down a bit creating a dry/hotspot on the APU. Yeah, he didn’t mention that & should’ve for clarity. However, anyone that has any familiarity with warranties is going to realize that pretty quickly. There are exceptions but just about any warranty is going to come with a clause that the warranty is voided if the defect stems from misuse of the product or owner made alterations that affect/disable the product.
Still, I agree. It’s important to make disclaimers about things like that for viewer clarity & just as a legal precaution. It might be that he’s made so many videos that involve disassembling the system so it’s just assumed knowledge for his regular viewers to anticipate the warranty being nullified if you do anything more than change out the covers or possibly add an SSD. But if anyone is a first time viewer or hasn’t gathered that assumption yet, it very well could lead to some real issues for those viewers.

I've cleaned it once in that time by disassembly to remove the fan and clean fins only. After the shut downs, I had a look inside, and sure enough the PSU vents were clogged. The disassembly guide is a little simplistic (some stills that can be paused with arrows for each screw length and hole would be really handy), but by and large as comprehensive as one needs to get the job done. I had a marathon session after cleaning, not one shut down - where normally I'd have several in one evening.

You can solve/prevent 99% of the dust issues by removing the covers and the fan for a quick cleaning. Take compressed air and spray the console out thoroughly after a few wipes of the inner covers and tooth brush on the inner cooling grates, and put it back together. Job done. No need to take anything else apart. Several vids of this procedure online. If you do this once every 6 months you shouldn't ever have to do an extreme teardown like in this video. I just performed this on my disk version PS5 after only purchasing it last Black Friday and it had a lot of dust even for a non smoking environment. I agree the console needs a redesign but I am impressed with how easily it disassembles and allows for memory expansion.

For the first generation of PS5s, not only you need to clean the dust as mentioned in the clip, but also you need to take a look at your liquid metal. the other day, I opened up mine and the LM was not in a good condition as it had several little dry spots on both MB and Heat sink. This process is even more difficult than just simply cleaning the dust out of power supply and the heat sink.

It's currently illegal to have the "warranty void if removed" sticker on products and yet Sony hasn't been called out on it on all PlayStation consoles. A law was passed sometime in the 1970s. When I heard about that I went ahead replaced my 12 year old PS3's thermal paste 2 years ago and it has been absolutely silent since then. Some thing with the fat PS4 going on to 8 years at the time. The amount of TP they put in the consoles were SUPER small which is why the fans are so loud. That and the thermal paste at the time was also dried up.

Great tutorial. Just finished disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling after following this tutorial, step by step. I would recommend going further than just taking the fan out, as I tried that the first time, but my PS5 was still overheating. Once I got to the power supply,it was immediately apparent that was the problem from the amount of dust deep down in the console. I’m also going to leave my console horizontal to help increase the airflow and hopefully not have any issues with the mercury in the future.

Blasted it from every hole and angle I could with a high psi air compressor and have been all good ever since. I’ve done it twice so far without issue. Just be sure to put something through the fan so it can’t spin.

Its important to keep your system clean and ventilated of course but it shouldnt require you to take the system apart to prevent it from overheating on certain games. That would be unacceptable from a design perspective if it required you to disassemble the fan every year to prevent certain games from over heating the system. The system should be able to handle some dust build up and compensate with the fan speed accordingly.

I think in non smoking room as mine clearing fan once each 6 months will do the job together with clearing outside dust that collects on surface for like every 10 days . I play about 3 hours each day at least and if I intend to play again I make 2 hours pause and completely turn off console. Even after 3 hours I can barely feel warmth on ps5 when I touch it with hand. Also i dont ever hear fan working unlike with ps4 which had habbit to go crazy with games like God of war and similar.
Also clearing fan of ps5 is so much easier compared to ps4 ( slim ) and God forbid ps3 where I had to completely take apart entire console ( ps3 slim ) . I think ps5 is really friendly console regarding all this.

Jesus Christ. I’ve opened up & taken apart (only what was necessary) my Xbox 360 and PS4 to clean them thoroughly, and been fortunate to have no problems afterwards. However, THIS, taking apart my PS5 completely to clean the air vents on the opposite side of the console is another level. Truthfully, I would be content taking care of my PS5 electronically (i.e system settings), on the outside (dusting/brushing/pressurized air), and even opening it just to remove & clean the fan. I’ve heard of design flaws, but this is asking too much if you want to keep your console in good condition. I would only go this far if I absolutely had to.
