My PS5 has been standing up on a vertical cooling station for 2 years and it works PERFECT! Never had any problems, and the stations fan isn't loud & does it's job.
Those cooling stations don’t work 1: pulls air down 2; there’s no exhaust on the bottom 3: no heat on the bottom 4: they use the PS5 USB to power = more heat and strain. Stop using 3rd party accessories for “cooling” your PS5, let the PS5 do it
@@beepboopthemyth Exactly. He just have to make sure to have generous amount of space to let the console breath and also clean its surroundings often, so that the console would breath clean air all the time. I bought a PS4 Pro white edition from a Japanese guy, and the console is super silent, even though it has been used and there are no sings of thermal paste reapplying. BUT, because the guy probably kept everything clean, the whole system aged beautifully and the fans are whisper quiet.
@@ignacio6454It's the new PS4 pro edition that comes with Red Dead Redemption.. I own one too and boy it's super silent..I guess sony figured how to silence the 4 pro eventually😂
I think most cases could stem from people not having enough open space. You want to make sure that nothing is blocking the back of the PS5. You want to have heat moving away much as possible so that cool air can intake. If you live in a hot room, maybe move your system into a living room with better room temps overall.
Given that all of Sony's marketing material for the PS5 has the console standing vertically (even the image on the front of the box has it vertical) it would be a really bad look for them if it turned out that having the PS5 vertical for a long period of time caused major issues. They couldn't just turn around and say "the console ideally should be placed horizontally" as in no way have they ever specified that. Just imagine the amount of class action lawsuits that would be thrown at them! 😁
Very helpful. I recently bought a playstation and have kept it in vertical position the entire time. I had numerous people telling me to put it into horizontal position or it will melt. I did research and realized it was the biggest hoax because all of the people claiming this led to the same thing. A guy flipping off sony claiming they had a "major hardware failure". The hype around it was because people had spent a ridiculous amount of money on this and the internet just seemed to make it more of a problem than it actually is. I still had my concerns though but this video helped put the nail in the coffin on my opinion.
It's not a hoax my friend. At all. It happens to all of them eventually, even people last year who said it was a hoax are now finally admitting it's a problem because it started happening to them. Every fat PS5 is doomed to have this problem. I fix at least 10 PS5s every week with the same problem, im a qualified tech and I've been doing this for 27 years. When I tell you it's a problem trust me, sony won't admit anything because they want your money. Many parents pay for their kids PS5s and a company like sony would love for them to break it and buy a new one. It's just business to them, sony hasn't cared about its customers since the late 80s. I'm glad you haven't had this problem, I only ask that you don't ridicule others who have. We are trying to help you and to prevent it ever happening 🙏
Would it not still be better to have it horizontal? Even if vert isn't actively breaking doens't mean it's the better way to stand (in all honest idk the best way just question)
the news i heard was if someone, either a repair tech or DIY owner, disassembled the system, took off that seal and didn't apply it correctly as you said, then they were at risk. the initial headline made it sound like it was risk regardless, but later evidence went with the amateurish disassembly. i haven't even touched my system in any way toward taking it apart, but the first article did spook me into putting it on the side
Great video. I've been using my PS5 in a shelf for 1+years now. I am very much aware of the PS5 generating too much heat on the back specially in a shelf, so I took it upon myself and put exhaust fans at the back of the shelf, which turns on when the PS5 turns on. So far so good
@@zacbob07 bought a 80mm circular saw attachment for a power drill, and got myself a pair of 3.9" exhaust fans. The fans are USB powered, so you can hook this up on the PS5 or a receiver if you have it, or a USB-A ac adapter. I drilled through the back of the shelf. I got myself a horizontal PS5 attachment stand, which allowed me to put the console in the shelf. Mu exhaust fans are conmected to an AV receiver. It minimizes the heat inside the shelf whether Im playing PS5, watching TV, or listening to music.
@@beepboopthemyth sorry, I meant to say i plugged the daisy-chained fans on a usb from my receiver. PS5 turns on, the tv turns on. Because of Earc, the receiver turns on too.
I saw a video with someone testing what happens when you disable the fan in the ps5 and run it. Apparently when it gets hot there will be an announcement on your screen saying the console is getting too hot and will eventually shut off if it cannot cool down after a while.
@@illtones_ are you sure it was an overheating issue and not a power surge shut down? I don't see why they would make some ps5s get an overheating warning and some won't and I have experienced my ps5 shutting down without warning because of over current.
I kept mine vertical the first few weeks. Then it started shutting off randomly. It was in a open space too. After laying it horizontally it never did it again. It kinda sucks because it looks better and takes up less space vertically.
Did you use the stand even when vertical? I thought the stand was only for horizontal, but I was recently told you need to use it whilst vertical too otherwise the PS5 could overheat, since there are vents on the bottom.
@@Travis-guy-247 That’s true! I used the stand, it must have been too close to the wall behind it. But I even made sure to push it forward to give it some breathing room. There must have been at least 8 inches of space behind it.
@@hustinzeitmeyer696 Yeah. I got mine in April and I'd had it vertical without the stand for 2 months 😬 It wasn't until a few weeks ago when I found out. @@Travis-guy-247 Oh I see, Sounds like what was happening to me! Even when using the stand so I wouldn’t worry about it. As long as it stopped doing that you should be good. @@hustinzeitmeyer696 Yeah, I'm thinking it should be fine. It never once shut off or even gave me a heat warning on the screen, just triple beeped every now and then. And yeah it's still vertical. Thanks for the video. I'm not super worried, I think it's very wise to get stuff like extended warranty for products that has moving components in them, of any kind which is what I did just in case.
Yeah touch that screw that holds it up vertically after an intense game session and tell me you don't get burned. There's a whole system of fans being blocked by putting that mount on. To be clear, I have nothing against standing the ps5 vertically. I actually have had it vertically since I got it when it first came out. I just can't stand the mount.
Thank you so much for this video. Long overdue. Personally I prefer to have my console horizontal rather than vertical, but that's just me. That being said though, as I said this is long overdue. This problem ONLY applies to people who have either had their console repaired by a dodgy repairer, or stupidly taken it apart themselves. No reason to get into a blind panic. Unless said console was defective from the start, which would be EXTREMELY remote.
According to Mark Cerny (architect of PS5) the PS5 won't downclock based on temperature to ensure parity across all PS5 systems. As far as I understood the PS5 is entirely power-limited, although I'd be curious how they can have deterministic clocks even in a powerlimited scenario, because a better sample should consume less power and be able to clock higher anyway. In any case from what I've understood from Mark's presentation the PS5 shouldn't downclock based on temperature so I wouldn't expect to see performance issues based on thermal throttling.
So many comments still saying it bad to run it vertically. Mine has been living in that position since November 28, 2020. And if you do a google search how many has died in that position, all you find is topics on how it been debunked. Or how the articles that told everyone it was bad has retracted that statement. But I cannot find a number of how many died in that position, just topics saying nothing bad will happen running PS5 vertically. Mine is in a verry well-ventilated area and I keep it clean. I think that how you keep one going no matter the position.
Liquid metal is superior to thermal paste. You gotta be using your PS5 inside an oven to actually get so hot enough to have a messy melted liquid metal inside your system. This is what these so called “professional” failed to address. My PS5 is being used minumum of 10 hours straight with a lot of people using it and still works like it was brand new and it’s always been in Vertical position. And I got the launch PS5.
I’ve had my 💿 Version since the first ones came out & I’ve had it vertical since day one & I use it often, but I do clean it with CO2 every couple of months

Really, my movies kept skipping. When I had it straight up but when I laid it on the side and solved the problem. I think there is some truth in it. Just from what I've seen.
I got a cleaning kit and it has been on the stand for almost 2 years and some change and it still works and sounds good. Can’t say the same about a PS4 life after the first two years.😂
It's not just the PS4 Pros that have that loud fan. The OG launch model PS4 also has the jet engine fan. A lot of ot also has to do with how much power the game pul from the system. When I play Tomb Raider Definitive Edition my PS4 doesn't get that loud. However when I pop in MW2019 it spools up like a Boeing 707.
I have an OG PS4 since 2015 and I have taken apart and cleaned it every year since I got it. It has never gotten loud at all. Like I hear the fan, but it’s not loud. So when I saw people on tik tok saying how their ps4 sounds like jet engines, I just say to clean it. And yes it does get loud when you don’t clean it cause my cousin has had the ps4 slim since launch and has never cleaned it until I told him to last year. His system was extremely loud and would get super hot. Now it’s runs quiet and cooler.
@rocketshiftgaming5693 Mine is a launch model from 2013 and I have taken it apart and cleaned it inside and out about once a year as well. Like I said a lot of it has to do with how much power the game pulls from the system. When I play earlier PS4 games, it doesn't get that loud, but when I pop in more recent titles that push the system to the max it runs super loud.
@@MariahWong oh. I don’t play much. The only games I play are gta 5, vice city, watch dogs 1 & 2, cod bo3 & advanced warfare, fall guys. And that’s pretty much it. I haven’t gotten any recent titles. I am considering a PS5 though.
My PS4 slim had collected dust in the cooling duct and the paste had been poorly applied in the factory. Cleaned all the dust, applied the best paste my local computer shop had and upgraded the drive to 1TB ssd. Noise was gone and games started running super smooth. Also SSD is a must for RDR2.
My step dad a smart guy. Just bought a ps5 like a month ago. He has his laying down. I asked him, " why he didn't have his standing up? " He said, " because i dont want to damage my console. " I wasn't sure really what he meant. But now i am seeing this ps5 issue.
I get the feeling that the people complaining about their PS5s dying when stored vertically aren’t keeping it clean and/or in a good environment. This just popped up at a convenient time for me, gonna get a ps5 in a bit over a week, and you’re the second channel that has said it won’t kill the console.
I agree. This is just like the issue right at the beginning, with people complaining that their PS5 consoles were shutting down, because they kept their consoles in a poorly ventilated environment to begin with (e.g. and enclosed cabinet). I mean isn't that just common sense. Wouldn't surprise me if that is part of this issue too.
As someone who has worked with liquid metal for many many years, no, it is extremely likely. And msny repair shops who vlog their repairs have even proved this happens.
Nah, I have had mine vertical since launch and it runs perfectly. So do many others I know. The LM is so tightly enclosed that it is squeezed in a sense to keep it evenly distributed, it literally does not have room to leak anywhere but where it currently is.
@@ltlsWhatltIs you haven’t watched enough videos where there is literally oxidation on the center because there isn’t any Liquid Metal in the middle due to it going off to one side.
Good having videos addressing this Just one thing I'll add about it shifting and hot/dry spots since I haven't seen people mentioning this in detail: Many people has expressed when opening the PS5 about it having seemingly "excessive" amount of liquid metal And I think that's by design, to basically fill the whole space inside the gasket so there's no empty space for the liquid metal to shift Unless after some time or due to external environmental conditions such as climate that it gets "burned off" through slow evaporation Then the hot/dry spots might start happen, so generally no need to worry for a a long time if it's in good conditions; or keep it horizontal if you have the space left (which I don't have with the other systems that were there already so I stood them all up now; I've just always preferred horizontal but it's not something that worries me, just to take into account since gravity is a thing
The odd thing about people saying that it being vertical is an issue is that in most cases where you use it on a CPU it is in a vertical position. I used liquid metal between my 8700K and the IHS years ago and its been nice and cool under its water block ever since. If the application is correct, and the mounting pressure is correct, then its going to be fine. Liquid metal is dangerous if applied poorly but if it is done properly its not really as dangerous as people make it out to be.
@EatMe420Mass produced console have 3 safety measures to stop the liquid metal leaking while when you apply liquid metal under IHS there is nothing that can stop it from leaking. I have been using liquid metal under my PS3 IHS and never had single problem considering the fact that nothing stops it from leaking. It also stays in vertical position all the time.
A CPU heatsink on a PC has much stronger clamps holding it down, even then I won't use liquid metal in a PC. Maybe in a flat desk PC, but definitely not a tower. It's not needed anyway and liquid metal runs, it's conductive. One drop gets out the board is fried
@EatMe420 what you just said. I'm not saying every model is affected but if sony is so adamant that only a few models are affected they should be replacing those models regardless of warranty. It's a manufacturing defect that was doomed from the start, I've had washer machines that were years out of warranty and they got replaced for an issue that was going to happen regardless of warranty. If the problem is as small as sony says, they should have no issue replacing affected models.
Guess I don’t have this issue. Mine has been standing since the day I got it, has well over 1000+ game/streaming hours on it. “Knocks on wood” 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Just want to thank you for the tip on putting the console on it’s side. I’ve always had it vertically and it would overheat. I put it on it’s side and played for 4 hours on a game I know shuts down the console after a hour in the vertical position. I still need to clean it. And was ready to take the whole thing apart to get to the power supply. But now that can wait until the weekend.
as an addition to my previous comment.. standing up the ps5 on vertical position will probably make it run a bit hotter since there are small vents on the bottom where hot air comes out aside from the vents on the back..
I've had mines for two years and it's always been in a vertical position and never had a problem with overheating. It's about to be three years in a vertical position and never had a problem, I even bought a new one.
My PS5 running for 18 months to today in vertical position and most of the time running for 15-20 hours of day(because i played and then my son), and working just fine! May be..... some bigger noise when read discs for short time when put on in!!!! Great video btw!!!
ive been using LM ever since it first beccame available for purchase about 10-15 years ago, on CPUs and GPUs(mostly with water cooling loops) and i am suprised itss still not well known how to apply it properly. If you are using it on a flat surfaces(most chips are with few exceptions of curved or damaged ones) you have to paint it on both surfaces of contact. This means you would not be able to see any pools but literraly use a tiny amount to simply cover 100% of both contact surfaces - sort of like painting a house. it takes patience but this way nothing will leak out no matter how you store or use it. Most people(including Sony PS5) use waaay too much of LM. I have done LM on few PS4s and PS4 Pros and it still looks the same if checked years after.
@@thelionszen3352exactly, with LM less is always more- whatever you think is little enough - apply quater of that and again the goal is to "paint" both contact points with as little of LM as humanly possible. If you see reflective pools gathering - youve done too much. Perfect LM application looks like a perfect mirror without any bumps or gaps on close up, you have to be patient and just keep "painting" with something like a qtip(make sure its the one where little hairs dont fall out). If you put too much - use dropper or syringe to suck it back up(quality LM is not cheap) and you can use it on something else later since it doesnt seem to have an expiration date(still have a tube of my first LM from at least 15 years ago and it still works as it was new). I dont use anything else for heat transfer(and havent used tape or foam insulators(although its a good idea) to catch run off in a decade - not a single problem with hundreds of applications)- only LM since when its applied properly(read above) there is 0% risk of it leaking and shorting components simply because there isnt enough of it to leak but more than enough to cover all the microfractures on the contact surfaces(always do both sides)
It wont damage your components if the black seal has been untouched but its common sense that liquid metal will flow to the bottom of the apu if you sit upright, eventually causing a hot spot on the apu,i would definitely recommend laying the console flat.
@@GearsAndTech I think it was the extension cord I was using, idk for sure because i wasnt going to test my theory on my PS4 😅 Decided to get a surge protector instead, hopefully I won't have that problem anymore.
What I want to know is whether or not there is any evidence to suggest that dry spots on the cpu are more likely to occur in the vertical position (due to the potential that gravity is pulling the liquid metal to the bottom of the chip) or if the position is just entirely irrelevant. I understand that people shouldn’t be worried about it running down out of the seal but I’ve seen a ton of repair videos with a dry spot so I’ve been curious about the exact causes.
@@GearsAndTech don't think? How about you do the research and find out because I've watched videos of a repair guy who showed multiple consoles still sealed and almost every one had dry spots from the PS5 being sat vertically. It will take years for it to be a issue but it's def a issue. Liquid anything is going to follow gravity and it pools to the bottom of the edge and that causes dry spots. Sony didn't think of this because u can tell they made the PS5 to sit vertically over horizontally
@@Games.Gadgets.Sports These are the same videos I'm referring to but do any of them specifically state that their customer informed them that they kept the console in a vertical position? If they did, I don't recall. Nonetheless I wish people would be more clear about the dry spot issue and finding out if the consoles being used vertically is indeed the primary cause of this problem. Ultimately, we can't just assume that based on these repair videos simply because there have been over 30 million PS5's sold at this point so it's hard to gauge exactly how prevalent the issue is or the exact cause. Everyone was far too focused on the liquid metal leaking when that was never really an issue but it seems like the dry spot issue really isn't being addressed all that much and until I have a solid answer I'll keep mine horizontal even though I prefer how it looks vertically.
According to TronicsFix , the repair guy cited in this video as an authority on these issues , gravity is an issue with liquid metal in general and dry, oxidized spots on the APU of PS5s are very common . TronicsFix recommends keeping a PS5 horizontal for these reasons so he thinks they might be related . th-cam.com/video/OiUBA6a_Ah8/w-d-xo.html

Putting your PlayStation 5 horizontal is the best scenario. Having it vertical could cause the liquid metal to pull to one side causing a dry spot and eventually causing the components to overheat.
Exactly this i dont understand why is it hard for ppl to understand that vertical will 100% cause dry spots leading to overheat , also high chances over the years to leak eventualy I mean its simple physics n common sense. Ppl just tend to deny this n say oh mine is fine since launch ,well open that fucker n see the dry spots on the chip 😂😂
Always, Always lay down your console horizontally. I have been saying this since 2006 with the Xbox 360. I had 3 friends all get the RROD and I mine was chugging for 10 years without getting it!
A PS5 repair shop here in manila have posted units that stopped working.. aside from their unit was placed vertically another commonnality is they did not use their unit for at least a month.. the repair shop also shown photos of the SoC having similar dry spots of liquid metal on the part facing the top side of the soc... and after reapplying liquid metal those units worked again..
I thought this story of the ps5 failing because of the Liquid Metal leakage was covered months ago. Wasn’t it proven it was on systems that had been worked on and the heat sink and cpu were separated.
I replaced the thermal paste on my ps4 pro it runs so much smoother and quieter. I use my ps5 horizontally and put ventilated side plates on. Also have a fan for the back. The issue is over time the liquid does seep to the bottom of the chip bc of gravity and it’s not covering the upper have of the chip if vertical. Not worried ab it leaking. But the liquid will primarily sit at the bottom of the chip if vertical. I protect my investment and use my system’s horizontal
Mine overheated standing up after a year (yes its been cleaned regularly) Hasn't overheated since laying it down. I'm not saying it's a for sure thing. Trust I'd much rather have it vertical it looks worlds better. But to me this is a "better safe than sorry" type of thing to me.
Same. I seen ali Express selling an identical after market metal ring stand for just $1 and was going to buy it, but then I thought about it. I'd rather be safe than sorry by keeping it horizontal than risking it just for aesthetic.
As someone whose had a ps5 since the very first day it released and has played games almost daily for hours on it or has left it on to download pretty often I can confidently tell you it's a lie.
Well, it happened to mine. Set it up vertically and the liquid metal leaked and ruined it. Luckily, I had bought an extended warranty and finally got it replaced.

It usually takes 12-24 hours worth of charging time to get a controller charged from 1 bar. I’ll live with it but it started a month after I got my console, been 3 months since I’ve had it now. The big problem with liquid metal is its ability to pretty much infiltrate and ruin the cohesiveness of most metal substances, a tiny speck can do a whole lot of damage and no one has ever thought of the Gallium element when heated, becomes an oxide which is pretty destructive to your components. Some are also beginning to suspect Sony did this to install planned obscelescence, that from the time at factory to time in use, its a ticking timer that will always fail regardless of upright or flat because the stuff just attacks everything inside the PS5 over time. Most of us old overclockers we soon gave up on the stuff simply as it was machine death if it got out and it was so unpredictable, it could escape with relative ease migrating against dialectic greases, shrouds, it was better practice to just lap your cooler and lid faces up to about 8000 grit finish and use a decent ceramic TIM. Often we would take a new cooler and have it surface ground to true before lapping, the last one I had done was my Coolermaster V8 and the thermal exchange on that was amazing due to me polishing it to a very high mirror on the copper side and Arctic Silver Ceramic between CPU and cooler base.
Change the lighting behind you. It makes you look blurred and distorted due to the color and the brightness. If you dim the main light and change the background it will add contrast and sharpen the video..
Thermal paste is a non conductive liquid it is made that way for things like this. Basically that means that thermal paste isn't gonna short your system.
My PS5 was standing vertically since day one, about 2 years ago. It was fine. I recently changed furniture so I had it stand horizontally. All good as well. I don't know what the fuss is all about.
My PS5 is standing and the fans don't sound any different since day one. The sound of the disc drive changed though. Not sure what to think about that 😅
The only thing I noticed when being horizontal is when it is reading a new game disc, it is so much louder. A loud humming noise. Mine currently is horizontal. But it being vertical is not so loud.
Me personally, I bought a dust cover for mine, and I have mines laying flat. But if the game console was designed to stand vertical, or flat, me I don't believe none of the BS hype.
Question, how is the Xbox series X set up inside? Since in reality 99% of people are just going to stand it up vertically especially the ps5 since it’s huge and takes up a decent area laid on its side.
@@GearsAndTech I’m currently trying to decide which platform I want to get. Leaning towards the ps5 currently. My only issue is the heat management compared to the series x. I’ll have my console on a stand next to my tv. I would assume either would be fine as long as you leave room for decent airflow? Also the stand is basically an end table that’s probably about 3ft x 3ft in area.

Random place to comment but I recommend doing this for the Xbox series x. The ports on it are soo large that if you don’t play it for a few days or have cats soooo much stuff seeps inside. Since flipping it, I’ve gathered a lot less cat hair and overall dust in the opening ducts
This will only affect PS5 consoles that have been dissembled and repaired by a third-party repair shop technician. Your PS5 will not malfunction if you already bought it straight from the store as a brand new console, you can safely place it vertically.
I hadnt cleaned my ps5 in a while and I noticed performance drops, so I cleaned it thoroughly and now no issues.....clean ur consoles out. Take the panels off and check the fan and air channels
Eh, some failures happen but it is a rare case. The Playstation designer said it's the same whether it's standing or laying down. I have space on the gaming rack, so I put it laying down. Perhaps there are also cases of liquid metal oozing out around the circuit board, stored in a laying down position, who knows?
This has been the experience/fix for many - yet for some strange reason people are out to debunk the concept like it's some kind of conspiracy. Yes, there's always gonna be a handful of guys like "my sh*ts been standing for 2 years and no issues." It's not some misunderstood lifestyle choice - horizontal will almost ALWAYS lead to a longer operations life.
Vertical I noticed it stayed dust free but pulled in less air so this liquid metal myth scared me into laying her down she stayed cooler but she was packed with dust in a few days.
I had the same problem I had it horizontal since I’ve bought it in November but it accumulated a lot of dust, yesterday I just put it vertical and honestly it’s not even getting as hot as it was when I had it horizontal.
Mine failed in the upright position within 1 hour initial set up and started to play G.o.W, didn't get past the dog sled chase schene and it shut off, wouldn't turn back on, for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. I thought it was ruined. After viewing several video's on you tube concerning this issue, I laid it in the horizontal position, and has been running like a champ , sometimes even all day long, meaning 16 to 18 hrs of gaming, never shutting off on its own.
I have been running it vertical since I got it (last month) but I am a paranoidal guy. Currently the place where I set it doesn't have enough space for horizontal mount, but I was going to clean that place anyways so I will change it horizontal too
Common sense shows that the liquid slowly seeps to the bottom of the pad and leaves a dry spot. It's just a shame it looks terrible placed horizontally.
Definitely a lie I’ve had mine standing vertically over 2 years now, no issues. I’m willing to bet they removed the little black seal around the chip and didn’t place it back properly. Also it could have been placed wrong from the factory. I suspect some dishonesty on the person who originally reported this. My ps5 is still virtually silent as the day I got it.
Had a dude at work have his PS5 break standing upright. But we cant say for sure being upright is what did it. He said that thermal putty on the chip dripped out. Now... I like this dude, but he isn't the sort of guy that would... know things 😂. He probably watched one of those videos and assumed thats what happened. Its also one of the first PS5 runs produced when it first came out... so like anything, there was gonna be some issues that get addressed in later models. I just got a new PS5 Slim and ordered a vertical stand w cooling fan and had to know... am I making a poor choice. Thanks for this vid.
So I got my PS5 in may 2021 and I placed it vertical. 30 min ago I had my playstation telling me that the console is to hot and now I'm placing it horizontally. Although I must say it was during a long gaming day and as I was playing final fantasy 16 wichich seems to be bugged because there are reports of the game destroying entire consoles because of overheating (sounds like bad game programming) I hope it was really just the game being bugged but for now i place my PS5 horizontally.
Well for the proven certainty in this video and my switch from horizontal to vertical made just yesterday, I bought a multifunctional docking and cooling station just to be 100% because i hate chance.
Only thing about most of the cooling stations is they actually blow into the ps5 which ends up being all the exit points that it blows into , so with that being said hopefully you don't have the cooling station that blows into the exit points . You're basically just blowing the hot air back into the console if so .
My PS5 has been standing up on a vertical cooling station for 2 years and it works PERFECT! Never had any problems, and the stations fan isn't loud & does it's job.
I think your results are pretty typical.
Those cooling stations don’t work
1: pulls air down
2; there’s no exhaust on the bottom
3: no heat on the bottom
4: they use the PS5 USB to power = more heat and strain.

I think most cases could stem from people not having enough open space. You want to make sure that nothing is blocking the back of the PS5. You want to have heat moving away much as possible so that cool air can intake. If you live in a hot room, maybe move your system into a living room with better room temps overall.
Yeah a lot of the problems come from obstructed air flow causing over heating.
Most people probably don't have enough available space to lay this behemoth flat, even if they wanted to. I certainly don't.
I was surprised it fit in my entertainment space sideways
But if it has to stand up then you'll still be fine
Why would you assume "most" people. You know how millions of people throughout the world setup their entertainment system?
The funny thing is I don't have the space to stand it up, I have to lay it down lol
Besides laying it flat especially in the cabinet is bad. Heat comes out of the rear. I did the best thing: wall mounted it and it runs ice cold.
Vertically is just as much of an issue.
My ps5 was standing vertical for over 2 years and it's doing great. Only kept it in a well ventilated space to keep it from potential overheating

Great video. I've been using my PS5 in a shelf for 1+years now. I am very much aware of the PS5 generating too much heat on the back specially in a shelf, so I took it upon myself and put exhaust fans at the back of the shelf, which turns on when the PS5 turns on. So far so good
How did you do that?
@@zacbob07 bought a 80mm circular saw attachment for a power drill, and got myself a pair of 3.9" exhaust fans. The fans are USB powered, so you can hook this up on the PS5 or a receiver if you have it, or a USB-A ac adapter. I drilled through the back of the shelf.
I got myself a horizontal PS5 attachment stand, which allowed me to put the console in the shelf.
Mu exhaust fans are conmected to an AV receiver. It minimizes the heat inside the shelf whether Im playing PS5, watching TV, or listening to music.

Did you use the stand even when vertical? I thought the stand was only for horizontal, but I was recently told you need to use it whilst vertical too otherwise the PS5 could overheat, since there are vents on the bottom.

Thanks for the validation. Amazing how many people are freaking out over it
According to Mark Cerny (architect of PS5) the PS5 won't downclock based on temperature to ensure parity across all PS5 systems.

I get the feeling that the people complaining about their PS5s dying when stored vertically aren’t keeping it clean and/or in a good environment. This just popped up at a convenient time for me, gonna get a ps5 in a bit over a week, and you’re the second channel that has said it won’t kill the console.
I clean mine, and I noticed my movies were skipping right out of the package, but as soon as I laid it down and solved the problem.

If I had more space on my desk I would lay it down but gonna have to keep it vertical for now.
Good having videos addressing this
Just one thing I'll add about it shifting and hot/dry spots since I haven't seen people mentioning this in detail:
Many people has expressed when opening the PS5 about it having seemingly "excessive" amount of liquid metal
And I think that's by design, to basically fill the whole space inside the gasket so there's no empty space for the liquid metal to shift
Unless after some time or due to external environmental conditions such as climate that it gets "burned off" through slow evaporation
Then the hot/dry spots might start happen, so generally no need to worry for a a long time if it's in good conditions; or keep it horizontal if you have the space left (which I don't have with the other systems that were there already so I stood them all up now; I've just always preferred horizontal but it's not something that worries me, just to take into account since gravity is a thing
Yea, been an owner for almost 3 yrs, properly maintained (cleaning dust out vents etc)with no issues!
Since the liquid metal pools at the bottom... it's probably best to go horizontal to avoid the chance of overheating. Why not mitigate risks
Exactly
Guess I don’t have this issue. Mine has been standing since the day I got it, has well over 1000+ game/streaming hours on it. “Knocks on wood” 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Just want to thank you for the tip on putting the console on it’s side. I’ve always had it vertically and it would overheat. I put it on it’s side and played for 4 hours on a game I know shuts down the console after a hour in the vertical position. I still need to clean it. And was ready to take the whole thing apart to get to the power supply. But now that can wait until the weekend.
Glad to hear it helped
Running my PS5 vertical since Launch day and no problems whatsoever ever since
Good to hear
as an addition to my previous comment.. standing up the ps5 on vertical position will probably make it run a bit hotter since there are small vents on the bottom where hot air comes out aside from the vents on the back..
If it’s ventilated it shouldn’t matter because hot air rises and there’s a large area at the top of the console that can let that air out
Just saying, I tested the temp vertical and horizontal. Mine ran cooler horizontal. At least a 10* difference. Cooler is better.
Not for me its hotter
I've had mines for two years and it's always been in a vertical position and never had a problem with overheating. It's about to be three years in a vertical position and never had a problem, I even bought a new one.

I have done LM on few PS4s and PS4 Pros and it still looks the same if checked years after.
at about 6:00 you see people applying globs of LM made me cringe so hard at those soon to be destroyed machines.
My son’s ps5 been vertical for over 2 years and he plays every single day pretty much. It’s had zero issues this far
It wont damage your components if the black seal has been untouched but its common sense that liquid metal will flow to the bottom of the apu if you sit upright, eventually causing a hot spot on the apu,i would definitely recommend laying the console flat.
Exactly
okay bro. but, PC's are vertical constantly... so explain that?
@@JoshTheHraefn5656the internals are set up differently in each pc but i doubt that matters
I bought a PS5 in April and it died on me after 20 minutes of playing Astro's 😭😭😭 decided to get a new one, will be here in a couple days!
That's crazy. Must have been defective unit from teh start
I really don't think that's supported either
@@GearsAndTech Thank you for the response!

Yss
Sure mate
Exactly this i dont understand why is it hard for ppl to understand that vertical will 100% cause dry spots leading to overheat , also high chances over the years to leak eventualy
I mean its simple physics n common sense.
Ppl just tend to deny this n say oh mine is fine since launch ,well open that fucker n see the dry spots on the chip 😂😂
@Gamerhopper please don't use any bad words
Always, Always lay down your console horizontally.

Wasn’t it proven it was on systems that had been worked on and the heat sink and cpu were separated.
there still seems to be a lot of buzz around it. Even people that dont have PS5's are starting to talk about how it cant be stood up
I had my PS5 Vertical since May 28 2022 until now March 22 2023 ain't going to mess up unless you have the back of it blocked no air flow
Gravity doesn't affect the liquid metal at all when pressure is applied.
Mine overheated standing up after a year (yes its been cleaned regularly) Hasn't overheated since laying it down. I'm not saying it's a for sure thing. Trust I'd much rather have it vertical it looks worlds better. But to me this is a "better safe than sorry" type of thing to me.
Agreed
Same here dude, I’ve had the digital version vertically since launch day with not 1 issue
My Movies stopped skipping as soon as I laid my PS5 down, so that tells me there is some truth in it.
Well, it happened to mine. Set it up vertically and the liquid metal leaked and ruined it. Luckily, I had bought an extended warranty and finally got it replaced.
Wow. Thanks for sharing
Was it dropped or abused in any way prior?
@@GearsAndTech No it was not. It was one of the first runs of ps5. The PS5 overheated while performing an update in rest mode. Tried all the online fixes. Sent it in to be repaired and found out about the liquid metal leak. They refunded me and I bought another ps5 that now sits on the side lol.
@@noahlampkins6330 From my experience, first runs of hardware tend to be a little less reliable than later iterations. That's part of why I usually wait a year or two before buying a console. I imagine that current PS5s don't have that issue.

The only issue on my PS5 is the charging times with my controllers, regardless of different charging cables I have. It usually takes 12-24 hours worth of charging time to get a controller charged from 1 bar. I’ll live with it but it started a month after I got my console, been 3 months since I’ve had it now. I also stand mine up right next to my TV (I have the disc version) and it’s super quiet with no other issues than the super long controller charging times.
Edit: This isn’t just in one controller, I have 4 controllers and they all behave this way. Forgot to mention that originally.
Controllers charge in 2 or 3 hours with the official cable that came with them otherwise just buy the official charging station because such a long time is obscene
@@Bamban-Gamer It happens even with the original cable too. I didn’t have space for a charging station but I do my best to work around the problem.
@@lakerskid2013 Get it replaced if possible because such a long time to charge is not normal, if its out of warranty you can try to install a new bigger battery to see if it fixes that issue
Do you perhaps have the original model not the revised one
@@lakerskid2013 problem must be in your controller battery. Either that or the type c "hole" in your controller (sorry, language barrier). Try to change the battery, if it works it will be a ideal solution which if successful, will save you good money and if not, well, new controller i guess
@@roberti1343 It’s in all of my controllers though, not just one. I have 4 controllers and all of them are like this. I have normal battery life, they just take a super long time to charge.
Not if you run it too long but running it less will keep it cool for the Sony PlayStation 5 and will last for years
Leaving it off all the time would make it last longest. But not very fun
You wrote a holly bible 😃
The ps4 had planned obelescence and once it got pointed out Sony "patched" it. So I wouldn't be surprised if that's what the liquid metal is
Change the lighting behind you. It makes you look blurred and distorted due to the color and the brightness. If you dim the main light and change the background it will add contrast and sharpen the video..
Thanks. I ll look into it
Thermal paste is a non conductive liquid it is made that way for things like this. Basically that means that thermal paste isn't gonna short your system.
This isn't thermal paste. It's liquid metal. Which is well known to be conductive
My PS5 was standing vertically since day one, about 2 years ago. It was fine. I recently changed furniture so I had it stand horizontally. All good as well. I don't know what the fuss is all about.
Had mine vertical since launch day with no issues
My PS5 is standing and the fans don't sound any different since day one. The sound of the disc drive changed though. Not sure what to think about that 😅
The only thing I noticed when being horizontal is when it is reading a new game disc, it is so much louder. A loud humming noise. Mine currently is horizontal. But it being vertical is not so loud.
Horizontally it has all the weight on the disc reader module….maybe that’s the reason but I think its dust
@@thatguy_dirt_in_your_eye at the time of my comment 2w ago. I recently got the ps5 so I don’t think its dust that quick
@@jacobaltman102 Vibrations are most likely causing that sound, to help just get a mouse pad under the console
My ps5 has been horizontal since day one
@@GearsAndTech I’m currently trying to decide which platform I want to get. Leaning towards the ps5 currently. My only issue is the heat management compared to the series x. I’ll have my console on a stand next to my tv. I would assume either would be fine as long as you leave room for decent airflow? Also the stand is basically an end table that’s probably about 3ft x 3ft in area.
I would say ps5. The system is dead quiet even when the fan is running full blast.

The ports on it are soo large that if you don’t play it for a few days or have cats soooo much stuff seeps inside. Since flipping it, I’ve gathered a lot less cat hair and overall dust in the opening ducts
not a bad idea
This will only affect PS5 consoles that have been dissembled and repaired by a third-party repair shop technician. Your PS5 will not malfunction if you already bought it straight from the store as a brand new console, you can safely place it vertically.
Lol I don't even have a PS5 but this is interesting
@@DJPurpleOne17 Best way to avoid this, send it in to Sony for repairs always. Never trust a third-party company.

My shit over heats when it’s vertical. Ps5 games specifically. Horizontal position fixed this🤷♂️
This has been the experience/fix for many - yet for some strange reason people are out to debunk the concept like it's some kind of conspiracy.
Interesting observation
Pulling more air = pulling more dust. So that makes sense. Just wonder why would it pull more air lying down.
Get a dust cover for your system
I had the same problem I had it horizontal since I’ve bought it in November but it accumulated a lot of dust, yesterday I just put it vertical and honestly it’s not even getting as hot as it was when I had it horizontal.
It pulls in the same amount of air vertically or horizontally I don’t know where you got that idea from……..
I have had my ps5 from the 1st week in December 2020 almost at launch (Launch date November 11 2020) standing up the entire time & ZERO issues with it
Me too
Same
Mine failed in the upright position within 1 hour initial set up and started to play G.o.W, didn't get past the dog sled chase schene and it shut off, wouldn't turn back on, for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. I thought it was ruined. After viewing several video's on you tube concerning this issue, I laid it in the horizontal position, and has been running like a champ , sometimes even all day long, meaning 16 to 18 hrs of gaming, never shutting off on its own.
Cheers for that little tip. Sure I do hear the fan spinning up but clearly that’s normal
No problem 👍
Really hoping i get this new job so i can FINALLY replace my borderline melting ps4 _._
Dying to play FFXVI. Great video and breakdown. Stay well.

I think you're right
We are looking at a system that was torn apart and not put together properly
@Gears and Tech there have been reports of systems not being open having this issue so odds are only a small percentage have this defect
When those reports were looked into further it turned out they were false
Had a dude at work have his PS5 break standing upright. But we cant say for sure being upright is what did it.
He said that thermal putty on the chip dripped out.
Now... I like this dude, but he isn't the sort of guy that would... know things 😂. He probably watched one of those videos and assumed thats what happened.
Its also one of the first PS5 runs produced when it first came out... so like anything, there was gonna be some issues that get addressed in later models.
