  • Travis demonstrates how to replace a water pump seal on a KTM RFS motor. He did not have his coffee on this morning so the beginning is a little rough, but overall a good demonstration

    Thanks for the video, Had to use a bolt to pull seal the carrier out. The bolt from your push button start switch is the same size. Quick tip instead of running to the hardware store.

    4:00 "an easy way to do it.......". I wish. After an hour with 3mm screws, multigrips and a heat gun, yanking and twisting, the carrier was reluctantly in my hot sweaty hands.

    Thanks a bunch! Seems to be working. I did have to press both seals in the keeper with a brass rod and a hammer. I used blue painters tape to wrap around the end of the shaft so it didn’t Knick the seal. Your kit at this time was unavailable.

    Why is the drain / indicator hole installed oriented on the top? It seems to me like if the coolant o ring leaked it would run down the second channel and out the weep no problem.
    However, with the hole for the internal, shaft seals installed vertically overhead, it seems the space between the seals would have to fill before coolant could run up and out of the drain hole and then out the weep hole...
    My manual is poorly worded on this too. I may be overthinking but might as well try and do this right the first time

    Good afternoon, I wanted to ask you, the motorcycle is the same as yours, the same engine. There is one problem, you can help me out if it's not difficult to explain. Drops go on the engine on the left side, and drain to the bottom, but the oil level is fine, the antifreeze is fine. And another problem, I can't find a cold level, and after warming up and running the engine, there is a level. Please help.( Vladislav from Sakhalin)KTM XC 450 2006

    Love the video! Question...I have radiator fluid weeping out of the little hole to the right of the water pump impeller. It appears as though this video shows all that I need to do to fix the problem, correct? Next question...so I don't need to take the cam cover off, break the cam chain to remove the cam to take care of this weeping leak that is getting worse? Last question, you sell the kit with the sleeve protector? I have the 2003 525 exc and I have a 500 mile ride coming up in two weeks. When I buy it, can I get it by this Friday so I can follow your video? Thanks.

    I'm getting coolant in my oil. I rebuild my water pump twice already and I'm wondering if its leaking some place else. Should I try and rebuild the pump again or look elsewhere for the problem?

    What the video doesn’t show is the valve cover isn’t tightened down to the head. I’ve tried this method and I can officially call bull shit on doing without taking the valve cover off. Carrier will not seat on the back oring.

    I got as far as taking the impeller circlip off,the impeller doesnt come off with big snap ring pliers,plastic is very soft and gives way easily,the impeller comes to a hard stop at the circlip groove even with two pair of pliers pulling on it.
    So it goes so far

    Does replacing the carrier stop oil leak? Or just coolant leak? Ive got an oil leak do i need to replace the inner seal?

    • @jswinfre
      @jswinfre ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Typically you would do the two seals that are in the center of the carrier and not just the O-rings, why he doesn’t do that in this video is beyond me. The inner one is an oil seal in the outer one is a coolant seal.

  • @jswinfre
    @jswinfre ปีที่แล้ว

    Why would you only do the outer O-rings of the carrier and not the seals that go around the shaft? I’m confused that’s how I’ve always done it and you might as well while you’re in there

    Can the coolant make its way into oil if the seals are bad?

    • @DaveOrth
      @DaveOrth 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are two seals in the carrier - one for the water side and another for the oil side. The center of the carrier is sort of a DMZ zone if you will - nothing should ever be there. If the water side fails (the most common in my limited experience), the coolant will leak into the DMZ and out through the weep hole. If the oil side fails first (this hasn't ever happened to me), then oil will enter the DMZ and leak out the weep hole.
      If both seals fail then I'm guessing you'll have a mix of oil and coolant leaking out the weep hole. Both the oil and coolant are above atmospheric pressure, but since the weep hole is open to the outside world, that would be the path of least resistance and would almost certainly vent all oil and coolant. I can't really imagine a scenario where coolant would be able to traverse the DMZ and force its way into the oil.
      But really, just a shade tree mechanic here, so happy to have someone more knowledgeable either confirm or deny.

    dont put the last o-ring in the hole. its easier to just get it on before you push it in.

    • @DaveOrth
      @DaveOrth 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Be super careful here because you must NOT put the interior o-ring into the center slot on the seal carrier. That's the wrong place! To put the inner o-ring onto the carrier you would just have to place it on the shelf of the carrier (think of an "L" channel instead of a "U" channel) to have it go in the correct place. Although I haven't tried doing it this way, it's possible that the o-ring would want to roll up as you pressed it into place which wouldn't be good.
      The method he shows in the video where you place the o-ring into it's final position and then push and rotate the carrier into place seems like a better choice. That's my two-cents anyway for a 9 year old comment. :-)

      @mhoner78 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave Orth my problem is I put the back seal in the hole, front seal on the carrier, do the twist as I push it in but then the entire carrier won’t stay in just wants to pop out about 1mm enough that I can’t get the pin back in for the impeller

    • @HFDerecho
