We've had red eared sliders since I was 4. We started with two, but one passed away a year ago. My parents neglect the one we have left, and now that I am an adult, I have decided to take his care into my own hands. This video was very helpful, and I can't thank you enough :)
I'm so happy I found you, Turtle Girl! My cat found a baby slider (2" long) in our screened in pool patio. Don't know how he got there. That was 5 years ago. "Ninja" is now 7" long & we are on our 4th tank. He loves his 70 gallon tank. He's super sociable & comes to the glass to greet our family & friends. But I feel he & I have a special connection😊 My husband & I are 75, so we have willed him to my son. Thanks for your great videos!❤
To build on what she said, I still have the red-eared sliders I got in 1994. I love my turtles, but often don't recommend them as pets for your kids unless you're willing to own them yourself.
I was supposed to be “turtle sitting” a slider for two weeks, ended up keeping her, knowing NOTHING about turtles, I quickly realized she had shell rot, was in a 20 gallon tank that was WAY too small for her, couldn’t fit on her basking area… now I have a slider because I refused to give her back. Now she has a much much bigger tank, a proper basking area, proper food, and the shell rot is treated. Thank you for your page!!
@@oSamiSrzo actually no. They gave her up because they knew they couldn’t adequately care for her anymore. I was willing to take her in and had to ability to care for her. They rescued her from someone who literally stole her as a baby from a pond and didn’t want her, and then realized it was a huge responsibility as she got older. Nothing wrong with any of that.

My wife recently came home with two red eared slider hatchlings to surprise our kids. A very sweet surprise, but unfortunately no idea what she got us into when getting them. Either way, they're home now and I'm doing as much research I can to make sure we can take care of them. Although this video is a couple years old, it's been a huge help. I just didn't realize the scale of what's needed to take care of these animals.... and we have two. Need to figure out spacing for either two tanks, or one huge one. Especially after finding out the sex of both of them. Everyone, wish me luck!
I have two males together for 7 years never attacked eachother. I just witnessed an accidental snap at the others front foot only once while feeding. They love eachother and sometimes do a red ear slider dance with eachother.
Omg mine too except I think mine’s a female and male ( idk their a baby but the breeder said that but now I think they are same gender) and they do the same thing
@@kfc_heroes Can’t tell until they mature. I bought my boys as “mix hatchlings” but ended up with two males. Males do it with each other to assert dominance. Usually the bigger guy wins as default.
Yes mine go face to face and do this thing with their hands. Like dancing … it’s great to watch. I video it all the time like what are they doing??? It’s like 5 very fast up and down waves then lift their arms and repeat. Wish I could upload the video of them here.
We got our red ear slider at petco and my husband had a painted turtle when we got married so we knew the just of taking care of them our red ear slider (Gizmo) lol begs and comes to me when I have food he allows me to hold him And pet his head and under his neck my husband however he opens his mouth hisses at my husband 😂 we love our little guy! i was at a covered bridge in New Hampshire, and a couple red eared were sitting on a rock sun bathing. I had seen them at the pet store but never in a river
If it was a pair of red eared sliders--there are a bunch of turtles in the northeast that can look pretty similar--they're invasive and drive out native species by taking habitat and food. Probably originated from someone not wanting their pet turtle anymore. It's really unfortunate. :(
I found two painted turtles in a mud “puddle/pond” so I put them both in the tank since they were already together. They’re doing great. The little one chills on top of the bigger one.

Great video!! I have had my girl for 36 yrs. I don’t know how old she is because she has not grown very much if at all. I bought her from a pet store for my son. She is mine now. I love her so much!!! 🐢❤️

Good job with the video! Had my turtle for over 15 years. Although... she destroyed nearly ALL of my fish. Including cichlids and super fast smaller fish. Pleco was the only one that lasted 10 years in the tank with her but he had a stressful life.
Wow so excited to watch all your videos. I have had my red eared slider for... idk 15-20 years? started as a hatchling. Moved from PA->OH->AZ->UT-> and where ever life will take us! She is quite a diva.
Have had my Eastern Painter Speedy for 30 years. Definitely didnt know much about them at 5 yrs old. Been in small tanks with not enough water or even light. Ive since learned a lot and amd in the process of redoing the tank yet again. I know it may have been rough but he's still kickin . I would love to know how old he really is.
You forgot to mention in your basking section, that they must have artificial sunlight bulbs(full uva/uvb rays) for the health of the turtle...very important!
Around 6:35 seconds in she talks about it. And you do want both one heats the other helps them see and gives keeps their shells healthy. In a short way to say it.
The lake in the middle of my neighborhood is full of painted turtles and snappers...been catching them for almost 40yrs...as a kid I’d catch them as babies, keep them a couple weeks to learn about them, then set them free...I have one named Sampson that I found injured on the rd when he was a baby...he’s now 30yrs old and going strong
This was a very helpful video. I bought a small aquarium (10 gallon) from Facebook market yesterday and saw a slider (about 6-8 inches) being kept in another 10 gallon. I had an empty 55 at home and offered to take the turtle off their hands.
Wow! This guide is great! I have a Yellow Bellied Slider, (Similar to the Red Eared Slider-) she's around 2 or 3, and she's doing great. I personally have a fish option that has worked for me is the Buenos Aires Tetra. They're schooling fish (I have 4, but I reccomend more if the tank is larger than a 15 gal-), they live in the same temperature water as Red Eared Sliders, and they're fast and small. My turtle did try to eat them at first, but she warmed up to them, and they swim all around eachother now.
I just got a eastern painted turtle like a week ago and he’s just chill as hell and barely moves a lot but he’s cool! I’m scared I’ll be bad at keeping em healthy and enjoying his life.
I can't thank you enough for ALL your informative videos. I really wanted to get a turtle but I didn't want to stick it in an empty 20 gallon tank and call it good. NOT good!! LOL But the more research I did, the more confused and worried I got. Go figure right?! So I slowed down, went back to the basics, compared your videos with a couple other youtube turtle owners I could trust and after months of research I am finally the proud momma of 2 hatchling Pink Belly Sidenecks. It's your fault TurtleGirl. and I will forever be grateful for your inspiration, knowledge and willingness to spend countless hundreds of hours helping us be the best turtle parents we can be.
I recently got 2 female red eared sliders about 2 months ago! They are about 2 inches in length and I have them in a 75 gallon and they are doing so awesome! They are so active and healthy! You’re videos were a lifesaver! I swear I’ve watched them all 10 times before getting my babies!

I’m getting back into turtles again found a hatchling res and have set up my old 120gallon tank for him and needed a refresher and this was helpful! But I do need to say when I had turtles before I had 16 in this tank at once! 9 juvenile res 2 adult res 1 Mississippi map 2 musk and 2 painted turtles and they all were great friends and never showed any aggression I guess it’s just in who your turtles are!

I rescued my painted turtle 6 years ago. I was raking my lawn and what felt like a stone hit my leg, I looked down to see a little turtle the size of a quarter upside down on his back. It was late in the fall and was close to snowing and I was concerned when I was 14 that he was gonna die, so he became my turtle. His name is Arty.
I have 10 red eared sliders living in a big fresh water reservoir with basking areas and a variety of fish so they can hunt as well. Some of them are over 30 years old. I bought three small ones for my daughter as pets. Now after all those years they’ve grown like 10 inches long. So I’ve known them for half my life. I’m 60 now. The rest are adopted by us throughout the years.

I've had 2 males were given to me as babies for 15 years. I kept them together for over ten years before I saw any aggressive behavior toward each other. I watched it escalate over the next few years, but was reluctant to separate them because they've always known each other, and not much else... One day I watched one take a chunk out of the other's neck. I separated them immediately and never put them back together. Luckily it wasn't too deep and he was able to heal from it, I'm so grateful it wasn't more serious.
My baby red eared slider is Constantly begging for food and turns away from one pellet but eat the same type of pellet in a different spot of his tank ,but he totally melts my heart because he is adorable
a baby read eared slider just came to my backyard mostly to bask because of the texas heat and when I saw the poor baby was all dried up I put a little water in a box and some rocks for the time being and kept out in the sun but obvi that's not gonna work so I'm looking to upgrade my habitat
My little southern painted is big enough to move to my outdoor pond and he loves it and when I take home out some times to walk on the grass if my dogs are laying down he will crawl on their backs and sunbath with them

I got a baby painted turtle about a year ago and started him off with a 10 gallon when he was the size of a quarter basically. Once he started swimming more I found a free 75 gallon tank that is now his forever home he absolutely loves it. It was funny watching him at the begging he was so small. We would loose him in it and not be able to see him from a distance since he was so small. But he’s growing Nicely into it

You helped me get my midland Smidge to eat when I first brought him home 3 years ago...u told me to soak his pellets in tuna juice, and I was so delighted when it worked.! Now he’s in a 75 gal tank, and eats anything I put in front of him- including my fingers! 😜Anyway, great , thorough vid!

i actually have 2 RES in one tank, i’ve had one for almost 2 years & she’s very friendly & social but tends to be pretty aggressive with anything she thinks could be food. i was worried when i got my second turtle but they get along great!! i am thinking i’ll need a tank upgrade soon though

(-: just spent 3 hours yesterday cleaning, adding river rocks & plants, & setting up their above tank basking platform. im in love with the setup but im kinda stumped because my water is full to the very top, but isnt reaching the minimum water level of the basking area somehow. i dont think my turtles will be able to get up there /-:

please answer pls- are there different care types for the different painted turtles? like for eastern painted turtle u need different care tips and for wester u need other care tips or all are same?
perfect timing as im planning to move soon and will have more options for my turtle. will def look into that above tank basking area. The aggression part is no joke, had to give away one of my turtles when i got them (a few months in) because she kept trying to be territorial and she bit a chunk off her sisters tail.
I've had my red ear slider Jeffy since he was a hatchling (I was about 9 years old when I got him) and he's currently 24 years old. We grew up together and I couldn't ask for a better pet.

We've had red eared sliders since I was 4. We started with two, but one passed away a year ago. My parents neglect the one we have left, and now that I am an adult, I have decided to take his care into my own hands. This video was very helpful, and I can't thank you enough :)

I'm so happy I found you, Turtle Girl! My cat found a baby slider (2" long) in our screened in pool patio. Don't know how he got there. That was 5 years ago. "Ninja" is now 7" long & we are on our 4th tank. He loves his 70 gallon tank. He's super sociable & comes to the glass to greet our family & friends. But I feel he & I have a special connection😊 My husband & I are 75, so we have willed him to my son. Thanks for your great videos!❤
To build on what she said, I still have the red-eared sliders I got in 1994. I love my turtles, but often don't recommend them as pets for your kids unless you're willing to own them yourself.
I was supposed to be “turtle sitting” a slider for two weeks, ended up keeping her, knowing NOTHING about turtles, I quickly realized she had shell rot, was in a 20 gallon tank that was WAY too small for her, couldn’t fit on her basking area… now I have a slider because I refused to give her back. Now she has a much much bigger tank, a proper basking area, proper food, and the shell rot is treated. Thank you for your page!!

@@oSamiSrzo actually no. They gave her up because they knew they couldn’t adequately care for her anymore. I was willing to take her in and had to ability to care for her. They rescued her from someone who literally stole her as a baby from a pond and didn’t want her, and then realized it was a huge responsibility as she got older. Nothing wrong with any of that.

My wife recently came home with two red eared slider hatchlings to surprise our kids. A very sweet surprise, but unfortunately no idea what she got us into when getting them. Either way, they're home now and I'm doing as much research I can to make sure we can take care of them. Although this video is a couple years old, it's been a huge help. I just didn't realize the scale of what's needed to take care of these animals.... and we have two. Need to figure out spacing for either two tanks, or one huge one. Especially after finding out the sex of both of them. Everyone, wish me luck!
I have two males together for 7 years never attacked eachother. I just witnessed an accidental snap at the others front foot only once while feeding. They love eachother and sometimes do a red ear slider dance with eachother.

@@kfc_heroes Can’t tell until they mature. I bought my boys as “mix hatchlings” but ended up with two males. Males do it with each other to assert dominance. Usually the bigger guy wins as default.

We got our red ear slider at petco and my husband had a painted turtle when we got married so we knew the just of taking care of them our red ear slider (Gizmo) lol begs and comes to me when I have food he allows me to hold him And pet his head and under his neck my husband however he opens his mouth hisses at my husband 😂 we love our little guy! i was at a covered bridge in New Hampshire, and a couple red eared were sitting on a rock sun bathing. I had seen them at the pet store but never in a river
If it was a pair of red eared sliders--there are a bunch of turtles in the northeast that can look pretty similar--they're invasive and drive out native species by taking habitat and food. Probably originated from someone not wanting their pet turtle anymore. It's really unfortunate. :(
I found two painted turtles in a mud “puddle/pond” so I put them both in the tank since they were already together. They’re doing great. The little one chills on top of the bigger one.

Good job with the video! Had my turtle for over 15 years. Although... she destroyed nearly ALL of my fish. Including cichlids and super fast smaller fish. Pleco was the only one that lasted 10 years in the tank with her but he had a stressful life.

Have had my Eastern Painter Speedy for 30 years. Definitely didnt know much about them at 5 yrs old. Been in small tanks with not enough water or even light. Ive since learned a lot and amd in the process of redoing the tank yet again. I know it may have been rough but he's still kickin . I would love to know how old he really is.
You forgot to mention in your basking section, that they must have artificial sunlight bulbs(full uva/uvb rays) for the health of the turtle...very important!

The lake in the middle of my neighborhood is full of painted turtles and snappers...been catching them for almost 40yrs...as a kid I’d catch them as babies, keep them a couple weeks to learn about them, then set them free...I have one named Sampson that I found injured on the rd when he was a baby...he’s now 30yrs old and going strong
This was a very helpful video. I bought a small aquarium (10 gallon) from Facebook market yesterday and saw a slider (about 6-8 inches) being kept in another 10 gallon. I had an empty 55 at home and offered to take the turtle off their hands.
Turtles are on my top 3 cutest animals of all time. Red eared sliders specifically. They are SO social, SO sweet, playful, curious, funny, and pretty.

Wow! This guide is great! I have a Yellow Bellied Slider, (Similar to the Red Eared Slider-) she's around 2 or 3, and she's doing great. I personally have a fish option that has worked for me is the Buenos Aires Tetra. They're schooling fish (I have 4, but I reccomend more if the tank is larger than a 15 gal-), they live in the same temperature water as Red Eared Sliders, and they're fast and small. My turtle did try to eat them at first, but she warmed up to them, and they swim all around eachother now.

I recently got 2 female red eared sliders about 2 months ago! They are about 2 inches in length and I have them in a 75 gallon and they are doing so awesome! They are so active and healthy! You’re videos were a lifesaver! I swear I’ve watched them all 10 times before getting my babies!

I’m getting back into turtles again found a hatchling res and have set up my old 120gallon tank for him and needed a refresher and this was helpful! But I do need to say when I had turtles before I had 16 in this tank at once! 9 juvenile res 2 adult res 1 Mississippi map 2 musk and 2 painted turtles and they all were great friends and never showed any aggression I guess it’s just in who your turtles are!

I was raking my lawn and what felt like a stone hit my leg, I looked down to see a little turtle the size of a quarter upside down on his back. It was late in the fall and was close to snowing and I was concerned when I was 14 that he was gonna die, so he became my turtle.
His name is Arty.

I have 10 red eared sliders living in a big fresh water reservoir with basking areas and a variety of fish so they can hunt as well. Some of them are over 30 years old. I bought three small ones for my daughter as pets. Now after all those years they’ve grown like 10 inches long. So I’ve known them for half my life. I’m 60 now. The rest are adopted by us throughout the years.

I've had 2 males were given to me as babies for 15 years. I kept them together for over ten years before I saw any aggressive behavior toward each other. I watched it escalate over the next few years, but was reluctant to separate them because they've always known each other, and not much else... One day I watched one take a chunk out of the other's neck. I separated them immediately and never put them back together. Luckily it wasn't too deep and he was able to heal from it, I'm so grateful it wasn't more serious.
i would love to see a water cycle procedure video i find it quiet complex and i want the best water condition for my turtles

My baby red eared slider is Constantly begging for food and turns away from one pellet but eat the same type of pellet in a different spot of his tank ,but he totally melts my heart because he is adorable
Omg that part where they get light was a smart idea they go on and off when ever they want to
a baby read eared slider just came to my backyard mostly to bask because of the texas heat and when I saw the poor baby was all dried up I put a little water in a box and some rocks for the time being and kept out in the sun but obvi that's not gonna work so I'm looking to upgrade my habitat

My little southern painted is big enough to move to my outdoor pond and he loves it and when I take home out some times to walk on the grass if my dogs are laying down he will crawl on their backs and sunbath with them

I got a baby painted turtle about a year ago and started him off with a 10 gallon when he was the size of a quarter basically. Once he started swimming more I found a free 75 gallon tank that is now his forever home he absolutely loves it. It was funny watching him at the begging he was so small. We would loose him in it and not be able to see him from a distance since he was so small. But he’s growing Nicely into it

You helped me get my midland Smidge to eat when I first brought him home 3 years ago...u told me to soak his pellets in tuna juice, and I was so delighted when it worked.! Now he’s in a 75 gal tank, and eats anything I put in front of him- including my fingers! 😜Anyway, great , thorough vid!

i actually have 2 RES in one tank, i’ve had one for almost 2 years & she’s very friendly & social but tends to be pretty aggressive with anything she thinks could be food. i was worried when i got my second turtle but they get along great!! i am thinking i’ll need a tank upgrade soon though

(-: just spent 3 hours yesterday cleaning, adding river rocks & plants, & setting up their above tank basking platform. im in love with the setup but im kinda stumped because my water is full to the very top, but isnt reaching the minimum water level of the basking area somehow. i dont think my turtles will be able to get up there /-:

please answer pls- are there different care types for the different painted turtles? like for eastern painted turtle u need different care tips and for wester u need other care tips or all are same?

perfect timing as im planning to move soon and will have more options for my turtle. will def look into that above tank basking area. The aggression part is no joke, had to give away one of my turtles when i got them (a few months in) because she kept trying to be territorial and she bit a chunk off her sisters tail.

I've had my red ear slider Jeffy since he was a hatchling (I was about 9 years old when I got him) and he's currently 24 years old. We grew up together and I couldn't ask for a better pet.
