    I'm so happy I found you, Turtle Girl! My cat found a baby slider (2" long) in our screened in pool patio. Don't know how he got there. That was 5 years ago. "Ninja" is now 7" long & we are on our 4th tank. He loves his 70 gallon tank. He's super sociable & comes to the glass to greet our family & friends. But I feel he & I have a special connection😊 My husband & I are 75, so we have willed him to my son. Thanks for your great videos!❤

    My wife recently came home with two red eared slider hatchlings to surprise our kids. A very sweet surprise, but unfortunately no idea what she got us into when getting them. Either way, they're home now and I'm doing as much research I can to make sure we can take care of them. Although this video is a couple years old, it's been a huge help. I just didn't realize the scale of what's needed to take care of these animals.... and we have two. Need to figure out spacing for either two tanks, or one huge one. Especially after finding out the sex of both of them. Everyone, wish me luck!

    I was supposed to be “turtle sitting” a slider for two weeks, ended up keeping her, knowing NOTHING about turtles, I quickly realized she had shell rot, was in a 20 gallon tank that was WAY too small for her, couldn’t fit on her basking area… now I have a slider because I refused to give her back. Now she has a much much bigger tank, a proper basking area, proper food, and the shell rot is treated. Thank you for your page!!

Mine are older than that and very very spoiled. But so many turts dont get a home like that. Its not ok. Thanks for your post, I think it was helpful.

      If its really warm outside you can do that, but I recommend still getting a heating bulb since its cold in winter and its always letting your turtle do it willingly, I'm not an expert but I'm confident in my answer.

    I know this is an older video, but I figured it was the best one to ask my question. I’ve had my res for about 3 1/2 months and I’ve been feeding him in the tank. However, I’d like to start feeding him outside of the aquarium. I tried once and he wouldn’t eat. Is it too late? If not, do you have any suggestions?

    • @TheTurtleGirl

      I'd say it's never too late. It just takes time, patience, and sometimes a little bribery (worms or dried shrimp) or trickery (scented pellets with tuna water) ;)

      If it was a pair of red eared sliders--there are a bunch of turtles in the northeast that can look pretty similar--they're invasive and drive out native species by taking habitat and food. Probably originated from someone not wanting their pet turtle anymore. It's really unfortunate. :(

    why is she talking about TANK size? indeed she might be talking about POND size huh
    but you can have them in tank- oh cmon these animals live in pond o lakes not in glass sguare
    if you wana learn about it look at DanTheTurtleMan he has a very good content- have a nice day:)

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey! Dan definitely has a great channel! However, for some people it's not always possible to keep them outdoors in ponds and some prefer the look of a tank, even if indoor stock tanks/tubs are an option. That's why I suggest making it as natural as possible. In any case, the enclosure needs to be appropriately sized :) People commonly keep them in tanks, and won't stop regardless of what I say, so might as well give the information to make it work and provide the best husbandry they can ;) Thanks for the comment!

Should l transfer him to a tank and slowly increase the depth of the water and we didn't have a basking area but we take him out so he could walk around the house

    • @Whgurwns

      jeepers you use tap water and then a water conditioner to dechlorinate the water. ( prime is a good conditioner to use)

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use dechlorinator to remove harmful chemicals from tap water. Only reason I haven't made a video yet is because recently some studies came out saying that there are potentially harmful things in water conditioner that could bs unhealthy for turtles and I'm not sure how true it is, but I wouldn't want to promote dechlorinator and then find it could be harmful.

      The Turtle Girl another method of dechlorinating Water is the off gassing method! 24 hours in a separate container with the biggest air stone you can get in the bottom of the container! The air stone creates more surface agitation increasing the gas exchange and removing the chlorine in the process! I know several large scale fish keepers who use this method to remove chlorine instead of chemical dechlorinater.

    I really wish more people would watch these videos before getting any kind of pet. I used to have 2 sliders, male and female, but we had to give them to my mom's sister since we had to move and couldn't keep them. That happened about 4 years ago. I visited her the other day and I was horrified. She keeps them in a small tub that's basically twice the size of the big female. They have literally nothing in it except for some filthy, shallow water. Not even a basking light, and they're only being fed dry shrimp. She put them in the balcony, where she and her husband usually smoke, besides the fact that it's pretty cold outside. I'm trying to convince my mom to get them back, but that might take a while.

    I've had 2 males were given to me as babies for 15 years. I kept them together for over ten years before I saw any aggressive behavior toward each other. I watched it escalate over the next few years, but was reluctant to separate them because they've always known each other, and not much else... One day I watched one take a chunk out of the other's neck. I separated them immediately and never put them back together. Luckily it wasn't too deep and he was able to heal from it, I'm so grateful it wasn't more serious.
